Rihanna Teams With Ne-Yo For Ominous “Rated R” Single “Russian Roulette”

10/20/09, 11:46 am EST

The wait is officially ova: Rihanna’s “Russian Roulette,” the first single off her upcoming album Rated R, debuted this morning at approximately 11:23 a.m. EST at the official RihannaNow Website. “Roulette” opens up with a desperado guitar lick that hints at an impending shootout before the throbbing and foreboding bassline that carries the track settles in. The dark ballad, which Ne-Yo wrote and produced, seems to find Rihanna singing about enduring a tumultuous relationship and keeping faith in a dangerous boyfriend. “You can see my heart beating, you can see it through my chest/I’m terrified, but I’m not leaving/Know that I must pass this test,” Rihanna sings on the chorus, “So just pull the trigger.” The song ends with an ominous gunshot. The song’s title and lyrics echo the singer’s recent interest in guns; in March she had a tiny gun tattooed on her side.

Rated R, the follow-up to 2007’s multiplatinum Good Girl Gone Bad, arrives physically and digitally on November 23rd, the same week as Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster, Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment and Britney Spears’ The Singles Collection hit stores.

Ne-Yo’s partnership with Rihanna has been fruitful in the past, generating hits like “Unfaithful,” “Take A Bow” and “Hate That I Love You.” Rhianna also recruited producers The-Dream & “Tricky” Stewart, Chase & Status, Stargate and Justin Timberlake for Rated R. As Rolling Stone reported yesterday, Stewart called his and The-Dream’s track for Rihanna a “monster” edgy club banger, and Chase & Status also talked about collaborating with the “Umbrella” singer on her new album.

“Russian Roulette” is the first Rihanna standalone song since her altercation with then-boyfriend Chris Brown before the Grammys on February 8th. Rihanna appeared in Kanye West’s “Paranoid” video and recently featured on Jay-Z’s “Run This Town,” but “Russian Roulette” marks the first time since “Disturbia” that she’s not sharing the spotlight. According to a press release, a video for “Russian Roulette,” which Rihanna was spotted shooting this past weekend with director Anthony Mandler, will debut in prime time on ABC at an unspecified time.

Wow umm never thought would say this but Rihanna honey therapy is something that should be done in private, not on an album. I might have liked this if it had come out as the third or fourth single, but to lead off with a downer of a track like this does not set my hopes high for the rest of the album. It definitely will not be a number one and will not be what Umbrella was for Good Girl Gone Bad.

kiki | 10/20/2009, 11:58 am EST

I agree with the interpretation here. I think its disgusting. Way to promote staying in a violent relationship Rihanna. What an idiot. I really can’t understand this as her first single. It makes me want to vomit.

moby | 10/20/2009, 12:09 pm EST

i love rihanna and her music and this is a good song but not the first single it just doesn’t bring what I was hoping for from her. I’m disappointed. But I will still will be getting her album w/o a doubt. She should have told them no on this as my first single

dave | 10/20/2009, 12:18 pm EST

you are reading WAAAAY to much into this..its a song..like it or hate it..THAT’s your job as a listener….not to pychso analyze it
and @SWEET..when it goes #1 (as it will) you’ll just look like an idiot..dont just shoot off the mouth like your thoughts are the end all..”It definitely will not be a number one ” says who? you?? c’mon..

the song SUCKS | 10/20/2009, 12:23 pm EST

@ dave: pychso analyze it? LOL come on kid, anyone with a brain knows what this song is about. there isnt much psychoanalyzing that needs to be done. the author of this article pointed out the lyrics (which unless she is not passionate about what she is singing) mean what they state & relate to her life. this song sucks, and anyone who listens to it and isnt bothered by the underlying message needs therapy.

Ewww | 10/20/2009, 12:30 pm EST

What the flip? What’s up with this song…it’s not what I was expecting. Everyone talked about how great this album will be, but this song doesn’t fulfill the promises. I’m not impressed. She better step it up if she wants to fully live out her 15 minutes of fan.

Kris | 10/20/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Just a song?? This person is a role model for the youth of America, and she is promoting violence, weapons, and tolerating abuse in a relationship. Are you KIDDING me?? It is disgusting. It may be “just a song”, but people all over will be singing and repeating these words publicly, and that disgusts me. NOT a fan of this person.

Sweet | 10/20/2009, 12:38 pm EST

@ Dave – get a life and grow up kid. i would not want to be someone dealing with depression or being in a dangerous relationship and hear this song that tries to put a psychotic positive spin on it.

Jill H. | 10/20/2009, 12:43 pm EST

I loved run this town, and every other song that she’s sang. I can’t wait to hear this song!!!!!!!

CB | 10/20/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Yawn. This is completely staged to make it “controversial” in order to generate hype and sales. Major label garbage at it’s finest. She’s not trying to say anything with this picture. It’s just pre-orchestrated by the major label to build up sales. There is nothing genuine about pop music, it’s just disposable media. A commodity

Kennedy | 10/20/2009, 12:55 pm EST

If you’re so tore up, depressed, and suicidal that this song makes you kill yourself, then you needed help long before “Russian Roulette” came along. Make up your own mind, follow your own observations, and stop being freakin’ sheep.

Dear this song SUCKS: just reading your post convinces me that you need therapy more than I do. You don’t like the song, don’t listen to it! How hard is that? Some people just have to tell others how to think, and how to act. Get your own act together first, then worry about subjugating the masses to your tastes and opinions.

Shay | 10/20/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Agreed CB

So what | 10/20/2009, 12:59 pm EST

No wonder the youth of this country is all screw up with no morals or any dignity when they have to listen to stuff like this, she is supposed to be a role models for girls, I guess we are in trouble, don’t give me that crap that it is just a pop song because young girls all over will listen to this and think that it is okay because their parent’s don’t even care what their kids listen to, Screwed up America, again I am not perfect but I am just making a point.

Neutral | 10/20/2009, 1:07 pm EST

I don’t know how many people could vomit only by hearing this song. You,american, are very strange.Britney’s song “If you seek amy” was terrible and disgusting by your opinion and you even wanted to make the song illegal.Get a life and stop with this s**t!
Russian Roulette is not what I expected to be but nevertheless I like it(not as much as Umbrella or Disturbia though )

me me | 10/20/2009, 1:14 pm EST

i agree with all of u…i was waiting to hear a club beat or something…it could have been a smash hit if it was a thrid single anyways…i’m kind of disappointed..i was hoping for an edgy song like disturbia or some thing

katharsis | 10/20/2009, 1:32 pm EST

dark. deep. gothic. Russian roulette.

Bad Lieutenant | 10/20/2009, 1:49 pm EST

Instead of this check out BAD LIEUTENANT”S new album called “NEVER CRY ANOTHER TEAR”.I had a chance to listen to this cd and it is very good. If you like great guitar playing, synths and great melodies you will love this. There is not one bad song on this album, from start to finish this cd rocks, with great New Order style moments in it. Bernard Sumner is a musical genius who has worked with New Order, Electronic and Joy division. If you like this cd Please give New order and Electronic a listen and you will love it, also listen to the first Album By a band called MONACO called Music for Pleasure which is also very good (New Order side project). It is very sad that New Order broke up, let’s hope they patch up their differences and make another album. Give the Bad Lieutenant a chance and you will love it.

dc | 10/20/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Over hyped!!!

tina | 10/20/2009, 1:56 pm EST

i like it, a nice change from the typical uptempo tracks. She’s an artist before she’s a role model.

nothing to prove. everybody have their way of expressing.
painters paint, writers write, singers sing.

Love it Rihanna. Fitting album title Rated R. She’s not a child anymore and she isn’t singing songs for them either.

RISK RISK RISK. You must take RISK .

AreUSerious??? | 10/20/2009, 2:09 pm EST

I actually like the song… but not the lyrics! I’m disappointed in Neyo and Rihanna for producing this song! RiRi is not a role model but if a suicidal person was to hear this song, this could be the last message that may encourage them to pull the trigger, as she says in the song. I do not think it’ll be a #1 hit but her gothic fans may surprise me and have it in the top 10. Never underestimate these songs! smh

this song SUCKS | 10/20/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Dear Kennedy: just reading my post convinced you that you need therapy more than I do??? LOL Glad you admit you need therapy. Your right, I don’t like the song & I HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOICE MY OPINION. I won’t be listening to the song anymore than I have to. Which means everytime I hear it on the radio I will turn the damn station. If you don’t like my opinion THEN DONT READ IT. Some people just have to tell others how to think, and how to act??? Yea your right, someone ought to tell Rihanna how to think and act, since she obviously ISNT MAKING ANY SMART DECISIONS TO STAND UP TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Get your own act together before you start judging other people for not condoning VIOLENCE. I stand by opinion that this song is disturbing and sends a bad message. You cannot criticize me for that.

Jessica | 10/20/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Wow, Sweet is a fucking IDIOT. Sweetie: An album is supposed to be therapy for an artist. every artist does it. they sing/play what they are feeling.

Annnnd to Kris…i don’t think she’s there to be a role model for anything… that’s YOUR responsibility for raising your kids, quit using celebrities as a scapegoat for all your rotten parenting.

THE BEST SONG | 10/20/2009, 2:34 pm EST

FUCK ALL PEOPLE WHO DON´T LIKE
THIS SONGS IS GREAT! AWESOME!
RIHANNA THE BEST EVER

dear Jessica | 10/20/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Don’t blame everything on the parents. Celebrities are looked at as role models whether you want to admit it or not. When you aim for fame, you should be aware that you are going to have an impact on the public.

Lu Galasso | 10/20/2009, 2:40 pm EST

You knew this was going to happen this year. you think Rihanna and her people would let a golden situation like the Chris Brown incident go to waste? No way.

Meow | 10/20/2009, 2:41 pm EST

As a non-Rihanna fan, I must say that this song ain’t half-bad. I expected far worse to be honest. Although I find it hilarious that thanks to technology, she can sound like Barbra Streisand in the studio, when anyone who’s seen her live knows she’s more like a William Hung. And to the people who say Rihanna shouldn’t sing such “violent” lyrics because she’s a role model, here’s a novel idea: BE YOUR OWN CHILDREN’S ROLE MODELS. That’s the whole point of being a parent anyway, YOU are responsible for how they turn out, not some freakin’ celebrity who doesn’t even know you or your kids. If you’re worried about THIS rather tame song inspiring people to commit suicide, then I guess young people should never listen to 90% of the music that exists. Because as far as “violent” lyrics go, there have been far worse. God forbid if there’s a school shooting anytime in the near future, I hope people won’t blame Rihanna. And another thing, music IS therapy, so what’s wrong with letting it all out on a song? If she made no reference to it all, then you guys would complain about that. Either way, there’s no pleasing you bastards. Nobody complains about Evanescence lyrics being too dark and dreary, everyone accepts it’s just music, and probably a therapeutic release for the songwriter. Ugh, I hate inadvertently defending someone I DON’T like.

Tokyo C | 10/20/2009, 2:42 pm EST

I don’t necessarily hear suicide in this song. It highly depends on the interpretation and I think it’s a good thing she went there. It’s all about taking a chance and not knowing the outcome. It may have something to do with her personal trials and the abuse, it might not. Rihanna is only your role model should you choose her to be.

TT | 10/20/2009, 2:50 pm EST

To me it sounds like she is talking about a loss of control… Russian Roulette, how many times can she “Pull the trigger” and survive. Time to leave the abusive relationship while she still can. Love her, Love it.

Missy | 10/20/2009, 2:54 pm EST

No one is saying that this song is going to single handily cause children to commit suicide. No one is saying that whatever Rihanna says and does, children will all do too. All that is being said is that this song is depressing and it seems to be promoting violence. Yes, many other songs out there do the same.. but what you are ignoring is here is the FACT that Rihanna is a victim of domestic abuse. If this her first attempt to explain her relationship w/ Brown, she didn’t paint a very pretty picture.

Tammy | 10/20/2009, 2:58 pm EST

@Meow

you said it the Best—–

I personally do not hear suicide in this song— I am sure You all heard of Metaphors

Meow | 10/20/2009, 3:01 pm EST

“Don’t blame everything on the parents. Celebrities are looked at as role models whether you want to admit it or not.”

Right, because it’s the celebrities who are the parents/guardians of the kids, it’s the celebrities who raise them, it’s the celebrities who say “Hey, look at me! Follow my example because I’m perfect!” Give me a break. Jessica’s right, the role model thing is nothing more than an excuse for parents to mess up at their job and then blame someone famous for that. If a kid makes terrible decisions, the blame SHOULD be squarely placed on the parents, no violent video games, music or movies are responsible for that. How do you explain kids who grow up to be perfectly well-adjusted and are able to make decisions based on their own moral compass, and not based on “What would [insert celebrity's name] do?”. I love a lot of the music of musicians who were prolific drug addicts, among other seedy things, and not once have I been inspired to follow in their footsteps in that regard. My parents taught me better. And since I knew better, I didn’t turn to celebrities for moral guidance, because the real role models were the people that were raising me and teaching me about the wrongs and rights of life. I suggest that the lazy parents of today do the same.

TB | 10/20/2009, 3:02 pm EST

lol, its a what yall think,,,,
its about a relationship which no one wants to see him with her, or her with him, and it gets violent bcuz ppl are tryin to teart them apart, so rihanna n the lover are sayin their only option is to kill themselves since no one wants them together, its a sad dark song,,

same as inter-racial relationships is an example okay ppl

TB | 10/20/2009, 3:03 pm EST

if its not about suicide idk then lol,,
but we have to wait until we see the music vid to FULLY understand the concept okay ppl

tmj | 10/20/2009, 3:18 pm EST

I don’t know what type of statement she is making with this song. I think this song is layered with metaphors..if it is about the domestic violence, it comes across as she is a willing participant…there are no lyrics implying she is being held against her will…….regardless, I don’t think this would be a good song to sing on a morning show.

tmj | 10/20/2009, 3:23 pm EST

Actually the thought of the video scares me..because if they are going to have a play on words, then will see be sitting with a gun. I doubt she would do a re-enactment of the February incident….

crap-a-lot | 10/20/2009, 3:27 pm EST

um…KISS just released a new cd with a song on it called “russian roulette” which im happy to report is alot better then this shit…

To crap-a-lot | 10/20/2009, 3:49 pm EST

If you are listening Kiss, there is no way for you to like this song.

Chris | 10/20/2009, 3:54 pm EST

One of the most beautifully performed songs of the decade. Go Rihanna.

John | 10/20/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Most of you are retarded. Art is where you express yourself. Music is where people should express themselves and not look toward pleasing the masses. She deserves a lot of kudos for SINGING a song from the heart without autotune that isn’t about some generic booty bouncing fur-boot wearing bullshit.

Dia | 10/20/2009, 4:00 pm EST

i really cant see how anyone has the arguement that the messgae sucks, when artists have been making music like this for ages and most recently nelly furtado- promiscuous girl, britney spears- 3 talking about a threesome, carrie underwood -before he cheats come on its just a song and people who can relate will understand even better

mickey | 10/20/2009, 4:07 pm EST

I do think alot of people will listen to the lyrics of this song and see it as a metaphor for suicide even if that isn’t what rihanna meant. Lets hope no one trys to play her game of russian roulette and ends up dead. I think rihanna is the one needing some counceling.

mugs | 10/20/2009, 4:18 pm EST

I think Rihanna is taking risks now that she is more grown and experienced. We get so used to Rihanna coming out with the uptempo songs so i can understand why most people would say it’s boring,i believe it will catch on i think she needs to release a next single prior to album release just to hype up the album.

Anonymous | 10/20/2009, 4:18 pm EST

This will be Rihanna’s biggest hit, since she rode in a car with Chris Brown.

Elijah | 10/20/2009, 4:22 pm EST

This song is great. Listen, it’s time to grow with Rihanna. This song will leave her stamp on the music industry. Rihanna did something that everyone didn’t expect from her- a slow moving haunting ballad instead of a dance club song as her first single. Rihanna is growing as an artist, and it shows very well.

Can’t you feel the pain in the record? Can’t you see how Rihanna is hurting. Listen to the song a few times in a row. It touches your heart…..pull the trigger… I know how it feels to be in a relationship with hurt and pain…don’t you?

Rihanna hurts just like everyone else, and when you’re hurt, you dont want to dance- she’s just not in that state of mind. Her marketing team and label did an excellent job of helping Rihanna grow, not stifling her by putting out a dance reord as the first single….

Watch her perform this song live— and watch closely– some tears will form in her eyes— because they did in mine!!! All I could think about was the photos of beaten Rihanna when I heard this…..it really sad. I wonder what Chris Brown thinks of the song.

Musically it will be #1 hit…..

ReBECCA. | 10/20/2009, 4:32 pm EST

The song is NOT about Chris Brown. NE-YO wrote the song, so everyone stop making false statements. Her new album, Rated R, is going to be HUGE!

dear Meow | 10/20/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Stop your ranting. This is fact: there are many factors that influence a child’s development other than parenting. My response to Jessica was a legitimate statement in which you decided to attack because why? You weren’t raised that way? Stop your whining. There are other people in this world besides you. Many people are influenced and moved by music. Just as writing music can be therapy, listening to it can be as well. This song can be viewed in different ways, but there is one metaphor being depicted that I certainly don’t condone.

GG | 10/20/2009, 4:34 pm EST

PRETENTIOUS CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
START ED LOSING FAITH IN HE WHEN SHE STARTED WALK AROUND LOOKING LIKE A CHEAP HOOKER!!!!

Nancy Botwin | 10/20/2009, 5:32 pm EST

Rated R, that’s a Queens Of The Stone Age album!!!

mce | 10/20/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Given the timing of this lead-off single, it comes across as more than a little disturbing. It’s not just the violent imagery of the lyrics and that ominous gunshot at the end–but the torture-porn artwork with her nearly naked and bound in barbed wire. Sorry, I don’t see anything resembling empowerment here–just a victim of physical abuse who is now being victimized by those trying to exploit her situation in the name of artistic expression.

Anonymous | 10/20/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Hehe…Listen to rolling stone, breaking down this bullshit pop song like it was “A Day in the Life” You guys are pathetic.

shaun | 10/20/2009, 5:57 pm EST

You don’t have to want to hear what she is saying, but Rihanna isn’t a stupid girl. Open your ears before passing judgements…

Cage | 10/20/2009, 5:58 pm EST

I just like the song NOT the message. However, I think Rihanna knew that this was gonna have controversy when they made the song. celebrities like her just role around in the controversy and ride it all the way up the charts to #1. Don’t take this song seriously and if someone in an abusive relationship listens to this song and actually thinks it would be good to stay in that relationship, well they were dumbasses to begin with if all it took for them to be convinced was a pop song. anyway, good song, bad message, end of story!

Meow | 10/20/2009, 6:02 pm EST

And there are many people that listen to “violent” songs and do not proceed to go do exactly as the song says. I am not just speaking for myself when I say that, believe or not some of us can actually THINK for ourselves, we don’t let the media dictate our decisions in life. If you’re stupid enough to commit suicide all because of a song (and THIS song, no less), it means you already had some deep underlying issues to begin with that had nothing to do with the music. You’d probably attempt suicide anyway, because anything would’ve pushed you over the edge. You’re probably one of the idiots who blamed Marilyn Manson during the Columbine massacre, and completely overlooked the fact that the shooters had deep psychological issues that went beyond music. Even psychological experts tell you that violent entertainment cannot push a sane person to go do something stupid. Whatever they end up doing, it was bound to happen anyway, it was only a matter of time. Neither Rihanna, nor any entertainer out there should be held responsible for people’s actions. They are only accountable for their own actions. No artist should safety-proof their music out of concern for mentally unstable people. Rihanna went through her own personal hell, she has a story to tell, let her tell it how she sees fit. She can’t censor herself because of some lunatics and some people who can’t raise children right. You don’t like it, don’t listen to it. Simple as that. Don’t expect the world to curve to your standards.

tlctaurus | 10/20/2009, 6:15 pm EST

You guys are so off-base if you think this sone is not going to be HUGE!!! This will definitely go number one and her album will sell over 400K when it drops. Sheis the princess of pop right now. I love to see her stretching herself creatively.

On a side note, Rihanna is not arole model, nor should she have to behave as one. I believe actions are far more important than words. She left an abusve relatonship, what more do you want. And dont take the freaking song so liteally.

HA HA HA!!! | 10/20/2009, 6:27 pm EST

Queens of the Stone Age have an album called “Rated R”

It’s really good.

meh | 10/20/2009, 6:46 pm EST

not that great of a song for rhianna. weak first single.

dear meow | 10/20/2009, 6:52 pm EST

There you go ranting again! You must be onw of those people who just yap yap yap and never really try to understand where someone else is coming from. I never said this song was going to influence someone to commit suicide. I never said that celebrities ahve more influence than parents in how their children behave. I think you are the one who wants to world to curve to your standards, as you assume all children are raised the same. And btw, you don’t know jack shit about research, because research has consistently shown that violence in the media can in fact have a negative effect on children.

Kanye West | 10/20/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Sorry Riri, I like you and Ima let you finish, but Puff Daddys Forever was the worst softmore album of all time!

What a shame!! | 10/20/2009, 8:19 pm EST

I have loved every song this girl has come out with! How could she as a role model to so many young woman, expressive artist or not, promote such a sick song,as it reflects that she doesn’t have enough self esteem as a person, and has to Prove
herself and her love to a MAN, for his acceptance, by putting a gun to her head!! NOT COOL!!
God,did she go down in my eyes with this choice of music!!

Anonymous | 10/20/2009, 8:39 pm EST

Rated R for Retarded.

MJ stans | 10/20/2009, 8:50 pm EST

Rollingstone’s interpretation sounds foolish whomever wrote that crap … it is a song about love and the consequences of it. Getting deeply involved is like playing Russian Roulette … you play with the chance that you will lose or you will win at love. Sometimes you go in too deep and it ends up bad as it did for her. Some people who end up in the bad relationships get a chance to leave and be back with their families while others don’t because they are harm to the point of death or not. Some get away from it, however, the consequence is that you never heal from it. You will always be in love with that person.
Her song is a metaphor for her life and many others … stop over analyzing it or underanalyzing it. She is “Living her life” and so should we instead of dissecting it.
If you want role models for you kids, then be one and tell them how to not be tempted by peer pressure as well.
Those who say the song is not about CB and that because Ne-yo wrote it that it has nothing to do with her life … they are delusional … I doubt she will sing a song that has no meaning to her … she hasn’t done that except at the beginning of her career. Geeezzz
@MEOW … like your comment except for the Barbra Streisand comparison … RiRi is mediocre in comparison to Barbra Streisand find someone else in her league to compare her to … She doesn’t sound any different than she did on the song “Unfaithful”, “Cry” or “Hate that I love you” …. all Ne-Yo songs written for her that did well on the charts.

ashley | 10/20/2009, 9:12 pm EST

The song is about chances n risk. That’s how it is with love n life. U don’t know ur outcome…so u continually take chances. I think the song is beautiful n a step up from all the rest of the stuff I’ve heard from her. Life is Russian roulette…unprotected sex is russian roulette…drunk driving…etc…stop being so hypocritical people…everyone has felt this way at least once…as far as the whole role model thing…yea b a parent…don’t rely on these celebs to raise ur kids…that is YOUR job…

Destiney | 10/20/2009, 10:38 pm EST

all of you should shut the fuck up. Rihanna is very talented and her voice and lyrics are beautiful, she’s not promoting violence you morons she’s expressing how she feels and telling a story. And anyway piss off she’s allowed to share her feelings in her lyrics even if to some of you they are wrong, their not i love them.

Ciji | 10/20/2009, 11:00 pm EST

The song is hot and it is packin as much heat as the title is. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG. She hits the right notes on this one it is a FANTASTIC COMBACK. Now I am interested in what else is on the album I am DEFINETLY GETTING HER ALBUM!!!! ITS HOT=)

hilarious | 10/20/2009, 11:11 pm EST

This is the only website I’ve encountered where people are saying this song will encourage suicide. LOL, I can’t remember the last time a POP song sent someone over the edge. What, do Tipper Gore and the rest of the PMRC commitee read Rolling Stone? I didn’t know you guys kept yourselves updated on pop culture, I just thought you guys kept your noses in your bibles and nothing else. You must not remember when you guys took every band in the 80s to trial and sat them through senate hearings in Congress because of their provocative lyrics that you feared would corrupt your kids. All you succeeded in doing was making it mandatory for Parental Advisory stickers to go on their albums. And guess what? THEY SOLD MORE RECORDS THAN WITHOUT THE STICKERS!!! LOL, don’t you get it? Controversy sells, and the more you guys make a stink about it, the more popular it’ll become. And really, this song is no big deal at all. If nobody has killed themselves listening to Slipknot, then I doubt they’ll do it listening to Rihanna. Seriously, get real people. Anyone who’s that emotionally fragile should be institutionalized. And I think Rihanna isn’t too interested in keeping her pre-teen fanbase, I mean look at the album cover. How come no one talks about how slutty she looks lately?

I Luv This Song | 10/20/2009, 11:51 pm EST

Rhianna is an artist before anything else, so she has the right to express herself like any other artist.
I like this song, I feel it has emotion. This girl is not responsible for raising the youth of America, that is solely up their parents. I swear Miley Cyrus is as provocative as they come and she is under 21, please leave Rhianna alone, she is a grown woman.

BSIDEHITS | 10/21/2009, 12:46 am EST

If you are a real artist you put “IT” outhere. Whatever your “IT” is. And at the end of the day you are not looking for anyone’s approval.
The album is going to sell because Controversy is always popular. “Some people want to die so they can be free..Controversy.”

Wizz | 10/21/2009, 1:53 am EST

beautiful yet dark song. can’t wait for the album

pffffft! | 10/21/2009, 1:55 am EST

what a boring song if this song goes #1 longer than 2 weeks than i’ll shoot myself, she’s going gansta!

Josh Homme | 10/21/2009, 3:07 am EST

She can’t even come up with an original album title. Stolen from the excellent Queens Of The Stone Age

wow | 10/21/2009, 7:54 am EST

this whole thing is stupid

daniel | 10/21/2009, 9:30 am EST

Every note, photo, live performance, gangsta’ gesture, etc is staged – this is not art and she is no artist. It is pop-entertainment for the mindless generation.

Suicide | 10/21/2009, 10:30 am EST

This is a tacky choice of song picked to stir up some controversy. The song is clearly about (to stay or to leave) an abusive relationship in which it is like playing a game of russian roulette. You are all naive to think just because Ne-Yo wrote this, it has nothing to do with Rihanna’s life. It certainly does. Whether you want to admit it or not there are plenty of people out there who will take this as a song about suicide. This is a disturbing song, and its NOT EVEN THAT GOOD! The only things going for it, is the controversy. And to those of you who don’t think the media has an influence on us, I suggest you go to the library and do your homework before stating your opinions as fact.

rhirhi done wrong.. | 10/21/2009, 12:42 pm EST

i don’t like it. give me something upbeat and tempo.. enough dark and dreary..i don’t wanna hear gunshots in a song.. there is enough violence outside of music in the world today.. if this hits number 1, i’ll be surprised.

Just a thought | 10/21/2009, 4:32 pm EST

They would have been better off putting the picture of her mangled face as the cover art. Seems much more fitting.

ohhell | 10/21/2009, 4:57 pm EST

wtf this song is crap! she could have done much better. i’m sick of her already! jay-z is suppose to be the master of the universe. he has had no problem telling her what to do thus far & she not taking his advise. he should have advised her differently. this is bull! sorry hon come again!

ohhell | 10/21/2009, 5:01 pm EST

@ Suicide

what abusive relationship? she hit Chris & he hit her back, they had a fight! She & nothing NE-HO are just trying to create a buzz that no one wants to hear about any longer. it is dead news she needs to move on because WE ALL HAVE!

ohhell | 10/21/2009, 5:10 pm EST

@dave

The song will be #1 but not because it deserves to be. It will reach the top because the music & media industry exec’s will place it there! It has nothing to do with how good or bad this song is. Her CD will also be placed at #1 & she will receive all of the music industry awards in 2010. Remember they said that she will be the next Beyonce & they will never be WRONG! Remember, they own everything & make all of the decisions!

Classy:If U Seek Amy! | 10/21/2009, 5:11 pm EST

I don’t know why so many people are under the impression that songs are supposed to be uplifting, hopeful, cheerful or about making the right choices in life. Songs are supposed to express true human emotion and that includes the negative stuff like making dangerous choices, tempting fate, walking down paths that you may not be able to walk back up. I tip my hat to Rihanna for taking a true risk making this almost wrecklessly vulnerable track rather than the expected ‘I was down, but now up and feel like Superwoman’ preachy kind of track. We get enough of those themes already from Beyonce, Alicia and Mary J. It is quite admirable and artsy for a popstar of Rihanna’s caliber to croon about making deadly decisions and blindly accepting whatever consquences that may ensue. Finally a mainstream artist has made a song about something real, albeit very dark and drastic. And the public can hardly deal. Go figure.

@ ohhell and @ Classy | 10/21/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Are you kidding me? It would figure someone would go there. “She hit him” is your opinion. There is no fact to prove that. Oh, and BTW he did not hit her, he BEAT HER UP. * Just because people think this song sucks and is too disturbing to even want to listen to, you think they are under the impression that all songs are supposed to be uplifting? There are plenty of songs on the radio that are rather serious and melancholic. This song is just plain sick. It’s absolutely disturbing and shows the lack of taste Rihanna and her music buddies have.

Um, what? | 10/21/2009, 5:53 pm EST

How is this about tolerating or “putting a positive spin” on domestic violence? It sounds like a song about being in a situation that’s quite awful and making a huge choice that could go wrong. For all we know it could be about LEAVING an abusive relationship while knowing that the abuser may hurt/kill you. And people who are saying that this will push suicidals to the edge… just because a person is depressed doesn’t mean that they are so weak-minded as to blow their brains out over a SONG!

Besides controversy sells. Combine that with the sexual nature of the single cover and you’ve got a delicious mass-marketing juxtaposition. The fact that the video will debut on ABC only makes it even more lucrative. So to all the fear-mongerers who think music must always be happy and be very blunt as to what it’s about, your just making the record companies, along with Rihanna herself, even more money.

hey suicide | 10/21/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Since you can’t think for yourself, then I suggest you avoid listening to heavy metal music or you might hang yourself, idiot.

Classy:If U Seek Amy! | 10/21/2009, 7:22 pm EST

People. She (or Neyo?) so obviously is not talking about literally playing Russian Roulette. Russian Roulette is supposed to be a metaphor for playing a dangerous game that can have irreversible consequences. It’s not “sick” if you know how to read between the lines and apply to other situations in life.

MR.PARTYMAN | 10/21/2009, 7:43 pm EST

I love this song and all you people who dissed the song are just the stupidest people in the world. I know the song is very dark but I think it is a good way for Rihanna to reinvent herself. I think the song is a great first single. Russian Roulette will be the da hottest song of the decade and the album Rated R will be the best album of the decade. So all u haterz FYCK U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to hey suicide | 10/21/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Please explain to me why you believe I can’t think for myself. You obviously can’t read because I don’t think anywhere in my comment did I say “someone is going to commit suicide after listening to this song”. I guess you are an uneducated fool.

to um, what | 10/21/2009, 8:24 pm EST

Did you miss the part where she says IM TERRIFIED/ IM NOT LEAVING????? Ya I guess, you probably are no good at critical thinking.

hey hey suicide | 10/21/2009, 8:26 pm EST

Can you please explain to me why you believe I cannot think for myself? I don’t see anywhere in my comment stating “someone will commit suicide after hearing this song”. Looks like you can’t read.

f yall | 10/21/2009, 8:28 pm EST

This song will never be number one.

to um what | 10/21/2009, 8:30 pm EST

Guess you missed the part where she sings IM TERRIFIED BUT IM NOT LEAVING. ???

hey hey suicide | 10/21/2009, 8:32 pm EST

Nope, I am sure I can and I don’t believe anywhere in my comment I stated that this song would push someone to commit suicide, did I? RollingStone hit the nail on the head with the interpretation of this song… “Rihanna singing about enduring a tumultuous relationship and keeping faith in a dangerous boyfriend”. THIS IS A BAD BAD BAD MESSAGE.

chad reiss | 10/21/2009, 8:58 pm EST

SHE COPIED KISS WHAT MORE CAN I SAY???

Bar | 10/21/2009, 9:32 pm EST

I think people aren’t really understanding the meaning of the song cause they’re narrowminded. This song is NOT about staying in an abusive relationship, it’s about how love is like a game of russian roulette where you take a chance and hope that the love last forever instead of “dying”. That’s why she says pull the trigger because she is willing to risk all she has to make the love work. Russian Roulette is just a metaphor!

Anonymous | 10/22/2009, 8:36 am EST

Words are powerful they speak life or death

jesse | 10/22/2009, 9:21 am EST

This is such nonsense when people complain and pull a role model card…stop being lazy parent and teach your kids right from wrong don’t leave it up to popstars… And male stars sing about sex drugs and violence all the time and get very little flak, why do female stars HAVE to be rolemodels and further more why do we sell young girls so short makeing them out to always be naive impressionable idiots that live or die by the words of celebrities

ohhell | 10/22/2009, 1:23 pm EST

@ Who the hell ever tried to called me out! I really don’t give a damn what you say; only a FOOL would believe that this chick did not hit that boy first just follow the nexus of the conversation she claimed they had! Anyway, I don’t give a damn 1 way or another. That is OLD, OLD, OLD, OLD, OLD not very interesting news! This song just sucks period! I wouldn’t care if it were sung by Beyonce, Pink, or Mary J B!

@ Missy | 10/22/2009, 1:37 pm EST

You sound like a FOOL Rihanna is not a victim of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE that is just the title the CONTROLLED MEDIA has given her! I find it troubling that the media would attempt to label a 19 year old male & 20 year old female in such a horrific way! They are very young to be saddled with such disgusting titles IS JUST A DAMN SHAME!

This media has not given either of these young people an opportunity to grow! You all should remember that they are young & need support as well as guidance. Running her or him down does nothing to improve anyone’s situation!

Black is Glamour | 10/22/2009, 3:41 pm EST

PURE DEMONIC..DARK..EVIL AND LACED WITH SATANIC INSPIRATION..just like the cover…as if this world isnt crazy and dark enough..music is inspiring and influential to many ppl..watch how this song influence the wrong ppl…smh. yall crazy for even likin such a demonic song…woow this world has gone nuts and music is officially dying…good music with great talent will probably will forever remain underground.

Black is Glamour | 10/22/2009, 3:42 pm EST

SOME ONE SAID: Listening to this song, what exactly is the first thing that comes to mind? Well it seems as if the door creaks open, I see a woman sitting in a chair, gun in hand. An entity is telling her the steps in order to keep her fame & money..you must play the game.

Say a prayer to yourself ( A demonic prayer )
He says close your eyes (Close your eyes, so that you will be blinded by what is actually going on)
Sometimes it helps ( He’s convincing her, as if he has done it himself)
And then I get a scary thought ( She’s aware that something scary is going on)
That he’s here means he’s never lost (Who is he? It’s not a person, it’s the entity)

So this is basically a continuance from the same entity that was featured in “Umbrella” and “Disturbia”.

As my life flashes before my eyes ( She witnesses her death)
I’m wondering will I ever see another sunrise? (Will she ever see the light)
So many won’t get the chance to say goodbye (She’s so far gone, they won’t be able to pull her out)
But it’s too late too pick up the value of my life (It’s too late to realize what her life truly meant…Value of my life= Her life within the industry is based on $, nothing else.

hey suicide | 10/22/2009, 5:16 pm EST

“And to those of you who don’t think the media has an influence on us, I suggest you go to the library and do your homework before stating your opinions as fact.”

afi | 10/22/2009, 5:17 pm EST

Ok, I love the song. And for the person @sweet music is a way of therapy. it’s a way to get anger out without hurting anyone. I love it and it WILL go number one.

hey suicide | 10/22/2009, 5:19 pm EST

And why is this song a bad message if you think there’s no risk of someone killing themselves as a result of it?

Anonymous | 10/22/2009, 8:35 pm EST

I like this song:):):). I think it’s a good thing that she’s expressing her emotions like this. Yes, it’s a ballad and yes it’s somber, but so what? Is there some unwritten rule that says she can’t put THIS song out as the first single? NO. If u have a problem w/ it, don’t listen to it and take your negativity somewhere else.

matthew | 10/23/2009, 6:19 am EST

hahahaha kiss totally burns this ho
they gonna be performing at the voodoo festival

djrabbitfacials | 10/23/2009, 6:21 am EST

russian roulette? are you joking?

thankfully i don’t listen to this rubbish. radio sux…rs sux, prove me wrong either of you.

matthew | 10/23/2009, 6:22 am EST

even if she telling all suicidal ppl 2 jump i still wouldnt care but the “music” is terrible. All i hear is the cutting edge sound engineering but there isnt an actual artist performing to complement it

Ok Im back | 10/23/2009, 3:14 pm EST

@ ohhell: only a FOOL would believe that this chick did not hit that boy first just follow the nexus of the conversation she claimed they had??? ONLY A FOOL WOULD MAKE A COMMENT LIKE THAT. You don’t know the whole story, so keep your (opinions) to yourself. Regardless of who hit who first, he never should have taken it to that level. You saw the picture of her face, yes?

@ @ Missy | 10/23/2009, 3:17 pm EST

“You sound like a FOOL Rihanna is not a victim of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE that is just the title the CONTROLLED MEDIA has given her!” UM NOOOOOPE!!!! Rihanna is a victim of domestiv violence… HER BF BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HER. What do you call that then? A love tap? HAHAHA YOU ARE THE FOOL! SOUNDS LIKE YOU DONT HAVE THE LEAST BIT OF COMMON SENSE OR EDUCATION. Must really suck to be ignorant ole you!!!!!

Last but not least... | 10/23/2009, 3:30 pm EST

@ hey suicide… You are a real piece of work, you know that? I see I have to spell everything out for you dont I? I dont believe this song will be the sole factor causing anyone to commit suicide. However, I think this song is sending a bad message because from what I deduce from this song (among many others) is a tale of a woman who is debating staying in a not so healthy relationship (aka playing a metaphorical game of russian roulette). No one in the right mind should encourage ANYONE to stay in an unhealthy relationship (violent or not). The line “I am terrified but Im not leaving” is exactly what Rihanna’s reaction was: to stay with Chris. (She immediately went back to him until the media tore her apart for it). She co-wrote this song with Ne-Yo, and it is her first track since her beatdown. Anyone who thinks this song has absolutely nothing to do with her unfortunate situation is naive. I for one don’t expect Rihanna to hop on the Domestic Violence advocacy train, but I definitely don’t think it is appropriate WHATSOEVER to be singing a song with these kinds of metaphors involved.

soundman | 10/23/2009, 5:20 pm EST

RIHANNA ROKS AND THIS JUST ONE SONG PROVES IT!! THERE IS NONE OTHER LIKE HER. SOME FOOLIOS OUT THERE JUST DON’T GET IT. rOCK ON BAY-BAY
PAPAKEN, RIVERSIDE, CA.

Yizzi | 10/26/2009, 7:59 am EST

The album cover is ugly, lacks creativity, and worst of it, it’s purely evil!
the song is the worst of Rihanna’s.

iLoveVampires>:)= | 10/26/2009, 2:48 pm EST

Look, look, look, honestly, the song has a nice beat, but the lyrics are WAY TOO FUCKIN OVERBOARD!!! why the FUCK is Rhianna talkin about “PULLING THE TRIGGER” this song is sickk(spits on the floor) nasty(stomping)she’s probably never been in a situation when you just wanna end ur life or you have a fuckin gun in ur hand and dont know what to do with it. THIS SONG MAKES ME SOOO FUCKIN MADD BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DIED!!!! FROM SHYTT LIKE THIS, SHES EXPLAINING DEATH AND HOW TO END IT!!!

WHAT A BITCH!

dvnovert | 10/26/2009, 4:00 pm EST

It’s underwhelming.
I think she’s boiled down to just image.
Her voice has never had it, and her songs will always ultimately be lacking for it.

Super Sachiko | 10/27/2009, 9:26 pm EST

I’ve never paid attention to her before but I loved this song immediately, her voice is incredibly pretty, and the emotion of the song is overwhelming! Amazing job Rihanna. I might be interested in her album!

TDH | 10/30/2009, 4:42 pm EST

Folks get a brain! Anybody who wanted to commit suicide will do it anyway, with or without this song. As for the worried parents, i think its abt time u turned off the tube & radio & actually began doing ur job – if u cant find the time then u had no business making babies in the first place.

All that shizzle aside, Russian Roulette rocks!

Me | 11/6/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Yeah, the song is ok, a bit depressing. I like “Wait Your Turn” or she should’ve came out with “Hatin’ On The Club”

Nicole | 11/7/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Neyo is the one who wrote the song for anyone who has a problem with the lyrics. Music is about emotion and expression… and she nailed it. She has to have atleast one song like this on her CD while ofcourse the fun and upbeat ones are catchy and fun to listen to this one has substance and meaning.

Meg | 11/11/2009, 9:53 am EST

Actually Nicole, you are WRONG. Rihanna co-wrote this song with Neyo.

ALL THESE DUMBASS COMMENTS | 11/19/2009, 11:37 pm EST
