Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister: Vampire of the Sunset Strip

10/20/09, 3:26 pm EST

Photograph by Pep Bonet / NOOR

Lemmy Kilmister may be the most indestructible rocker alive. At 63 years old, he still spends nearly every day he’s not on tour swilling bourbon at West Hollywood’s legendary rocker hangout the Rainbow Bar & Grill — and his band still plays about 150 shows a year. Rolling Stone’s Mark Binelli put in some quality time at the Rainbow (and Kilmister’s nearby apartment, stocked with a mind-blowing array of WWII and Nazi memorabilia) for a profile of Motörhead’s singer/bassist in our new issue.

Go backstage with Motörhead on the band’s 2008 European tour.

“The first time I ever saw Motörhead was on the Blizzard of Ozz tour,” Slash tells RS. “I swear to God, it was the loudest thing I ever heard. They EQ’d it in a way to rip the top of your fucking head off.” Ozzy Osbourne recalls that tour too: “[Lemmy] had a plaid bag with three books an a notepad. No change of clothes. His fucking rider was seven bottles of bourbon, eight bottles of vodka, two bottles of orange juice, and that’s fucking it!”

Unsurprisingly, Lemmy has taken a path that’s very unlike other rockers. Acknowledging his unusual journey, Kilmister tells RS, “I mean, I missed out on human relationships. But looking at relationships that I’ve seen along the way, I don’t think I’ve missed much.” Kilmister has let rock & roll be his guide since he was a kid learning Buddy Holly records in Wales, and in our profile Kilmister recounts joining (and leaving) legendary psych-rock band Hawkwind, attempting to teach Sid Vicious how to play the bass and the beginnings of Motörhead, which he conceived as a blend of Hawkwind, the MC5 and Little Richard.

For Binelli’s full story, pick up the new issue, on stands now. And check out Rolling Stone’s Q&A with Kilmister from last year, when the legend was celebrating the release of his band’s 20th album, Motörizer.

It’s because of Lemmy that I’m Deaf Forever!

Bow Down | 10/20/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Lemmy is God and its about time Rolling Stone paid some respect.

I agree | 10/20/2009, 4:03 pm EST

with Bow Down. These are the people RS should be writing about. I must say, the story in the issue is influential. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. And it assured me that what I want to do as a musicologist.

jc | 10/20/2009, 7:55 pm EST

lemmy deserved the cover

patmcgraw | 10/20/2009, 8:08 pm EST

saw motorhead open for Ozzy and didn’t appreciate what I was seeing…though I remember Lemmy, mic above his head as if screaming at God. Glad he’s still rockin

That thing on his face | 10/20/2009, 11:23 pm EST

It’s always distracted me. I’m sorry, I know he’s great, but I had to say it.

EF | 10/20/2009, 11:50 pm EST

Well i enjoyed the article until the whole nazi memorabilia obsession came up.

EVC | 10/21/2009, 12:47 am EST

The true King of Rock & Roll. JC is right Lemmy and Motorhead deserve the cover.

roll over | 10/21/2009, 7:46 am EST

Chances are Lemmy has bedded your wife, daughter or girlfriend.

JJGG | 10/21/2009, 8:51 am EST

Ok, so rolling stone forgot this loser…

Swigging whisky on that dump road of Sunset Boulevard isn’t going to impress me as well as that other loser of Osbourne talking about the guy’s bourbon, vodak and OJ.

I mean, come on, are you all running out of ideas…?

Gene Simmons | 10/21/2009, 9:33 am EST

I invented Motorhead!

zbtrocker | 10/21/2009, 10:35 am EST

EF, It’s a WWII obsession, not a Nazi obsession.

JJGG, he’s a blue collar man who just happens to have made iconic music, even if you’re not familiar with it.

Wonder why they didn’t talk about his advice column?

Born to Lose, Live to Win | 10/21/2009, 11:29 am EST

Interesting how quickly people judge – JJGG’s comment –
“Swigging whiskey on that dump road of Sunset Boulevard…”
- notice the correct spelling of the word – whiskey. Thank you very much.

Lemmy has lived an amazing life in being true to himself and thus true to others. Traveled the world many times over, changed the world or at least a part of it, met and worked with amazing artists. Is an amazing artist.

When your credentials read as above maybe then you’ll be credible enough to criticize. In the meantime – work on your spelling & grammar, work on your self esteem and above all have a creative idea yourself rather than complain about others’ lack of…

Advice? | 10/21/2009, 11:53 am EST

Where is this advice column? I must read it!

Anonymous | 10/21/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Is that a photo of Lady Gaga?

Lamme | 10/21/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Nazis?? Really? Fuck him!

MetalNoir66 | 10/21/2009, 12:51 pm EST

@ Advice–I think his advice collumn was in Jane magazine. I know it made VH-1’s “Least Metal Moments” list…

Yeah–give Lemmy the cover of RS already!

mikey | 10/21/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Lemmy rocks he should be on this issues cover not madonna

Richard | 10/21/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Regardless if Motorhead is your cup of tea or not, it’s good to see RS profile people like Merle Haggard, Ginger Baker and Lemmy for a change.

These people have actually made a difference on their respective music genres for more than 5 minutes.

All too often RS gives unwarranted coverage (and covers) to whatever the flavor of the month band is at that moment.

It’s good to see RS give some respect to artists who have actually earned it.

Hope this continues.

transoniqjohnny | 10/21/2009, 1:36 pm EST

Right fookin’ on!!! Guys like Lemmy/Ginger/Merle are honest to goodness musical legends. I must say the past few months read of RS has vastly improved. The alcohol stuff is part of our collective culture – geez. “Budweezer”/”Jack Damniels”/”Stol-icck-naya” markets their garbage for SALES period. If Lemmy likes the swill, so what? Dig the riff and rock!

ticketbastard | 10/21/2009, 1:37 pm EST

I agree with Richard. This new trend of covering the musicians who are LEGENDS having actually CONTRIBUTED to rock’s history is rare and sorely needed. The recent pieces on Kris Kristofferson and Gregg Allman were outstanding. Please continue with the quality writing inside and we’ll forgive the cotton candy cover stories.

coachmaddog | 10/21/2009, 1:43 pm EST

God bless him

JP | 10/21/2009, 1:53 pm EST

JJGG – When you have a movie made about you (supposed to be released in 2010) with Dave Grohl, Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Peter Hook of Joy Division/New Order, Dee Snider, Mick Jones of The Clash, Jim Heath of Reverend Horton Heat, Slim Jim Phantom of The Stray Cats, Mike Inez, pro skateboarder Geoff Rowley, pro wrestler Triple H, C.C. Deville of Poison, Fast Eddie Clarke, Johnny Knoxville, Jarvis Cocker, Marky Ramone, former Hawkwind bandmates Dave Brock and Stacia, and Steve Vai testifying to your life and career, then you can criticize…

Lemmy is one of the very few rock musicians who have stayed true to what their music, their fans and their lifestyle while continually writing, recording and touring since the mid 1960s… If anyone deserves to be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, it’s him.

Richard | 10/21/2009, 2:35 pm EST

Motorhead definitely deserve HOF consideration, but sadly probably never will. The weak lineup for this years finalists is proof of that.

These artists deserve the nod more than most of the finalists this year:

Rush
Deep Purple
Gram Parsons
Lee “Scratch” Perry
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Judas Priest
The Commodores
Doug Sahm
The Cure
Iron Maiden

kliff | 10/21/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Just received this in the mail the other day and this was the only thing worth reading in this article. It’s blasphemous that Lemmy was religated to the middle of the mag and they put maDONEa on the cover. ugh! you suck RS!

kliff | 10/21/2009, 2:46 pm EST

The last thing lemmy is, is a nazi. he’s the most liberal metal head on the planet. read his book and you’ll learn something. He’s collecting historic items. he’s not a nazi.

Nikolai | 10/21/2009, 4:05 pm EST

What a godly muttonstache.

AceOfSpades | 10/21/2009, 6:04 pm EST

Congrats to RS for a riveting article on a rock and roll God. From The Beatles to Hendrix to Hawkwind to Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten, he truly is the booze-addled equivalent of a rock and roll Forrest Gump!

WestBruceLaing | 10/21/2009, 6:54 pm EST

yes this man has lived so many lifes (even 9 cats wont do!)… and the sound of early Motorhead influenced much of the early great Records of Saxon… even Motorhead stole them their drummer in 1982… and it basically killed (the mechanical chemistry in) Saxon
Well that’s another tiny chapter in Lemmy’s life…
Everybody’s talking about booze… that’s ok but until the end of the 70s…he was also a Weed smoker… really into Speed stuff and even LSD before and while he was with Hawkwind…
so to say just Booze…is a big part of the truth…but it’s also somewhere an unimaginative modern lie made for republicans yankee rockers…the man tried much more …

Chip Love | 10/21/2009, 8:14 pm EST

The Sunset Strip is a historic, fuckin’ A, rock’n'roll, legend. And the Rainbow is the the heart of the Strip. Lemme is the definition of true rock’n'roll. That’s why he hangs out on the Strip. Cuz he know what’s up. That’s what’s up.

Sol | 10/21/2009, 10:25 pm EST

HAYLEY PLEASE COME TO ARGENTINA!
we’re all waiting for our 1° chance to show you that we’re the best fans you’ll ever gonna know.
We’re crazies and ready to rock!

WE LOVE YOU! NEVER FORGET IT! ♥

Lemmy 4 President | 10/22/2009, 7:08 am EST

Classic Rock Revisited: Is there any music that you cannot listen to?

Lemmy: Hip-hop. I think that is the worst music black people have ever made. I started out because of black people’s records. I started out with the blues and then got into Chuck Berry and then Stax Records and Motown. Is hip-hop an extension of that? I don’t think so. I would kill for Little Richard, as he is the best rock n’ roll ever.

Boots | 10/22/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Rolling Stone is not a rock magazine. If it was, Lemmy would be on the cover and not Madonna.

Jungleland2 | 10/22/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Motorizer from last year as as good as their classic records..they still have it!

Crazy Respect | 10/22/2009, 10:35 pm EST

Lemmy is the grandfather of it all. 30+ years!…Motorhead still Rules!

Goldmember | 10/23/2009, 10:49 am EST

MOLE…MOLEY MOLE MOLE

benny schwartz | 10/23/2009, 10:54 am EST

I always liked Lemmy but as a jewish person I’m disapointed that he has a nazi memorablia collection.I am the only jewish fan upset by this? I think I’m gonna burn all my motorhead records and will no longer spend my jewish money on any future Lemmy crap.

the road crew | 10/23/2009, 12:37 pm EST

I saw Motorhead several times in 1980-1983. Awesome. Once headlining in a club in Buffalo with Raven and a very young Metallica opening the show. I think my ears are still bleeding. Thanks Lemmy!

Tom G | 10/23/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Remember the line from the movie Airheads, when the Lone Rangers ask,” Who would win in a fight between Lemmy & God”? ” “It’s a trick question, cuz Lemmy is God”. That is so true, all hail the King of Kings.

likkshocker | 10/24/2009, 5:57 am EST

wasn’t he also the editor of his school magazine?

Spider | 10/24/2009, 6:28 am EST

Gotta love Lemmy – warts (or in his case mole) and all – still rockin’ like the dirty old bastard that he is near retirement age.

If you don’t have ‘Ace of Spades’ your rock’n'roll collection ain’t complete!

Mark B | 10/24/2009, 12:13 pm EST

Benny, I understand to a point. My mom was of Irish extraction, my dad English. When people ask…I’m Irish. Forget the past, repeat it in the future. Lemmy is doing you a favor. At least he’s Welsh.

DJ Lemmy | 10/24/2009, 1:27 pm EST

Lemmy has his place so does hip hop. If successive generations didn’t make something new out of the past, music would be dead.

LINSO1991 | 10/24/2009, 5:38 pm EST

I read the printed article in its entirety, and I thought it was amazing. As a journalist, I could tell the interview was really indepth, and there was a lot of great information to work with! I learned things about Lemmy I never knew before. Job well done!

Pete | 10/24/2009, 11:09 pm EST

Love Lemmy, but the reason I’m deaf for life is Jay Jay French

lb | 10/25/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Lemmy was Jimi Hendrix’s roadie. Madonna was a leach who ate out of trash cans. Lemmy is a hard core rocker, Madonna is a hard core attention seeking vampire. They both drink and do amphetamines. Musically, their both very talented. Personally I would rather sit with Lemmy and break bread than with Madonna, he’s much more interesting, salt of the earth.

ROCKIN'STACHE | 10/25/2009, 7:37 pm EST

Saw em in 1980 – Bradford, England. Rocked then as they do now. Lemmy signed the covers of all my Motorhead records, spent some time chatting to us, went on stage, drank copious amounts of Jack and tore the house down.Thirty years have passed. I need a new hip and Lemmy still does it like he ever did. True Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Kliff | 10/25/2009, 10:42 pm EST

Lemmy collects Nazi memorabilia, he doesn’t belong to the nazi party, the neo-nazi party or the white supremicst party. How can you not understand that it’s interesting? We all agree that the nazis were evil and we are glad they were defeated. Him collecting these things are a hobby, not a political leaning. Do I want to collect nazi memorabilia? no. war is sick and i want nothing to remind me of it in my home. Get off lemmy’s back about this.

Poopsy | 10/25/2009, 11:22 pm EST

Motorhead, like Slayer and AC/DC have redone the same record countless times. Like em, don’t love em. Lemmy is hilarious though

Rockit | 10/28/2009, 1:14 pm EST

It’s about fucking time RS did an article on Lemmy instead of some pale, skinny, 20-something hipster bullshit band (the list is too long to quote here!!). Motorhead is one of the most influencial bands in Metal & Rock N’ Roll and it’s about time more people took notice. I’ve been a fan for nearly 30 years, since the age of 13 and I never get tired of Motorhead. I get a real warm feeling when I see families with young kids at a MH show. My only gripe is Lemmy should have been on the cover. Now, let’s see if the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Shame takes notice.

slv | 11/19/2009, 1:02 am EST

people who are upset about his nazi memorabilia collection are morons.

DFW SuperGeek | 11/24/2009, 1:45 am EST

To JJGG- Don’t Hate, Appreciate. Lemmy is a pioneer, like it or not… and if you don’t like it, there are plenty of other artists you can listen to, such as Hannah Montana, Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton (he still works in music, right??)
Just saying is all…
I’m shocked and pleased Lemmy is still going at it!
