Rihanna’s New Single Is an Edgy Club Banger, Tricky Stewart Says

Rihanna’s first single from her upcoming fourth album (due November 23rd), will be unveiled October 20th at 11:23 a.m. EST. Due to the level of secrecy surrounding the star’s new LP — it’ll be her first work under her own name since she was assaulted by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown in February — producer Chris “Tricky” Stewart tells Rap-Up he’s unsure whether the track he worked on will be the first or second single and can’t release its name — but either way, he guarantees the song will be a smash. “It’s uptempo. It’s a club banger and it’s edgy,” Stewart said.

Check out photos of Rihanna onstage and off.

The song was written by The-Dream and produced by Stewart, the same pair responsible for Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad smash “Umbrella,” but Stewart says the new single is “different.” “It’s a superstar taking a step in a totally different direction. This album is different than her past works,” Stewart said.

Just as “Umbrella” featured a guest spot by Jay-Z, this new song will also feature an unspecified top-flight rapper. Stewart also confirmed that the cryptic “The Wait is Ova, November 23rd” scrawled on Rihanna’s official Website referred to the release date of the star’s fourth album. Amazon’s presale page for the record says the LP will be a double-disc, but there’s no confirmation on that as yet.

“This is Rihanna coming into her own and going from being a girl that has been singing big, huge hit records, and the artist is awake and alive and moving on this project,” Stewart said. “She knows exactly what she wants to say, she knows how she wants to feel.” Stewart and The-Dream have so far only contributed the “monster” single, and Stewart confirms Ne-Yo is another songwriter working on the project.

Besides appearing in Kanye West’s “Paranoid” video and singing the chorus on Jay-Z’s “Run This Town,” Rihanna has largely kept out of the musical spotlight in 2009. That’s about to change, and soon. “Everything’s about to happen really fast, so it’s not gonna be long,” Stewart said.

Pity album people are gonna buy it because she’s a “victim” meaning going back to your boyfriend, not pressing charges, and being made to testify. If anyone is a victim its her fans.

In sorta related news:

Chris Brown tickets went on sale this weekend, for a show in Atlanta. The venue only holds 1,100 people, and Chris Brown couldn’t even sell it out.

(Tickets were cheap too, by today’s standards. $35)

Stick a fork in his career. He’s done.

Neo | 10/19/2009, 11:23 am EST

Did he say superstar ??. How high are you ??

Anonymous | 10/19/2009, 11:53 am EST

Dude, like it or not (which I don’t), she IS a superstar.

Kay | 10/19/2009, 12:33 pm EST

I was a person who kinda supported Rhianna, but I’m sorry….her voice is annoying as hell. I can hardly listen to her music.

Agreed | 10/19/2009, 12:53 pm EST

I sort of liked Rihanna at first because she was different. But now, like Kay said, her voice is annoying. I’m tired of seeing her everywhere, she’s like T-Pain or even Twilight. She’s everywhere and it’s annoying. I wish people focused more on the quality of music, not the scandals in people’s lives, what they wear and how they look. It seems as if no one truly cares about talent anymore, that’s apparent in the success of people like Rihanna.

Schultz | 10/19/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Isn’t her 15 minutes up yet?

StrummerJones | 10/19/2009, 1:12 pm EST

I was never much a fan of Rihanna, but I quite like her on songs like Disturbia and Run This Town.

chris_smith | 10/19/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Rob | 10/19/2009, 2:59 pm EST

you people are so nasty! Rihanna is amazing. She doesn’t need the pity for people to buy her music. Just look at how well “Good Girl Gone Bad” done as well as the lead single “Umbrella” which stayed in the charts all summmer.

Yas | 10/19/2009, 3:19 pm EST

@damn22: | 10/19/2009, 4:22 pm EST

small time popstar?

you realize how successful she’s been in that short time? she tied beyonce for most #1 singles of the decade, and beyonce was in the game much longer than rihanna. give it up, the girl is owed respect.

Britney Spears is one of the most successful female artists of all time, in terms of commercial success. That does NOT mean she is owed respect, due to her lack of musical talent. Same goes for Rihanna. Just because someone has sold a ton of records doesn’t mean they are “owed respect”, because I think we all know by now in this day and age that you can acquire plenty of commercial success without an ounce of talent. All you need is sex appeal and a great marketing team, and you’re on your way to the top. That is basically the story behind Rihanna’s success. So don’t give me the “the girl is owed respect” bullshit. I can’t remember the last time a pop star was actually worthy of respect.

She is not talented enough to have success twice!!! Like really the damn girl is depressed she walks around in all black not speaking a word!! Check her mental state before the money hungry record company pulls out an album!!!!!!!!!!!

jessica | 10/20/2009, 12:18 am EST

I love Rhianna, she is my favorite. I wish the chris brown thing hadn’t happened but i still love her, and I think her voice is very unique

Annoyed | 10/20/2009, 1:03 am EST

*at damn22.

Rihanna has only been in the game 2 years less than Beyonce. If you want to include Live Your Life in a count of chart topping singles then you would see that Beyonce has 8 #1 singles. 5 on her own and 3 with DC.

Anonymous | 10/20/2009, 5:18 pm EST

I have a question… Why in the world are so many Rihanna haters deciding to click on Rihanna articles and comment on them. I’ve noticed that with Rihanna a very small majority of people seem to get a kick out of putting her down! Seriously stop spending all your time slagging her off and get a HOBBY. I don’t like other singers either but I don’t go around saying how much I hate them or “how they don’t deserve success”. The amount of times you haters talk about her it’s as if you’re obsessed with her!

//Rant over

Anyway, yeah Russian Roulette = Very good indeed.

Angie R | 10/21/2009, 5:36 pm EST

I have always loved Rihannas music! Her voice is soooo crisp and clean and she has so much power behind it without even trying!
She is going to be as big as Beyonce and Madona! She is already on her way!
She may need to mix it up a little more with a little more focus on loving relationships or something a little more fun as. Lately her music has been dramatic ! But as we all know , her life has been pretty dramatic! She will calm it down and be fantastic!
Great voice and beautiful!
She has got what it takes!
GO RIHANNA

SuSiie | 10/21/2009, 7:33 pm EST

YeRhhh HaRdOwT mAnnn ii HATE RIHANNA

Rosaine | 10/22/2009, 1:33 am EST

To all the rihanna haters….to hell with ya’ll. Majority rules and its a fact that the world LOVES this chick. She has a beautiful voice and god blessed her with a pretty face and banging body to match. For the record..she does deserve respect because she has earned it. Way to go rihanna!! Cant wait to buy the album on 11.23.09.
Haters…prepare for her world domination…like it or not!

I luv her | 10/29/2009, 5:04 am EST
