Depeche Mode’s Gahan Makes Rock-Star Mistake: Thanks Chile While In Peru

10/15/09, 11:38 am EST

Depeche Mode were onstage earlier this week during their second of four shows south of the Equator when frontman Dave Gahan ended “Never Let Me Down Again,” grabbed his microphone and shouted, “Thank you very much, Chile!” to the audience at Explanada del Estadio Monumental. One problem, though: Explanada del Estadio Monumental is not in Chile. It’s in Lima, Peru. UPDATE: While Gahan’s mumble sure sounds like “Chile” to our ears (and the Hollywood Reporter’s), many of our trusted readers disagree — some have suggested he said “goodnight,” some think he said “children.” Listen for yourself and leave your verdict in the comments. Mr. Gahan, if we’re wrong, we apologize.

To Gahan’s credit, the band is playing Santiago, Chile, tonight, October 15th, so the mistake (if he made one) wasn’t totally unwarranted. Any touring band will tell you the space-time continuum becomes a blurry mess after a few nights on the tour bus — in fact, this kind of mishap happens more often than you’d think. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this isn’t the first time Peru has been mistaken for one of its neighbors. In 2003, Alanis Morissette said “Thank you, Brazil,” even though she, too, was in Peru. And earlier this year, threesome fan Britney Spears greeted fans in San Jose with, “What’s up, Sacramento!”

Come on mates ! He said : “Thank you very much good nite”

Perhaps you need to clean your ears a bit …
And by the way you RS, you never write anything good about Depeche Mode, only when something “bad” happens, and this is the so called “bible of rock”
Disgusting …

Richard | 10/15/2009, 12:17 pm EST

I also heard “Thank you very much, good night!”

Unless this is something that is blatantly obvious ( this is not) or is confirmed by the artist, I don’t see why RS would run this story as “news”.

Disappointing.

Frida | 10/15/2009, 12:39 pm EST

I was in that concert and they clearly say: Thank you very much children!
like they also said in others concerts on this tour.

Anonymous | 10/15/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Rolling Stone write plenty of good articles about DM.

Check out their last review of DM’s current tour. Nothing but praise.

corinne | 10/15/2009, 1:31 pm EST

where are you guys getting anything about chili or children? its very obvious he’s saying “thank you very much, good night”

kylie | 10/15/2009, 1:33 pm EST

Umm, yea… he said “thank you very much, goodnight” take a listen… it’s pretty obvious.

corinne | 10/15/2009, 1:36 pm EST

haha i meant chile…sorry..im hungry :D

Mark | 10/15/2009, 2:07 pm EST

The same about Alanis – she said in 2003 “thank you…bless you” and newspapers said she said thank you Brazil! Some people should clean their ears especially in South America’s concerts!

dangerous | 10/15/2009, 2:14 pm EST

oh, Rolling stone magazine fell down to gossip level!!! Everybody who has ears is hearing clearly “Thank you very much good night”

DEPECHE MODE FOREVER!

knucklehead | 10/15/2009, 2:29 pm EST

I was there, he said “Goodnight, I want to eat your children”

S.O. | 10/15/2009, 2:49 pm EST

The only credit that I saw RS give DM in the past 10 years was Rob Sheffield’s review (I think that was him) of DM playing solid at a sold out show at MSG in New York. Maybe a few good/decent reviews of Lollapalooza earlier this year too.

god | 10/15/2009, 2:54 pm EST

why defend these pretentious losers? depeche mode suck period.they have never been relevant at all.

Tom Assdolby | 10/15/2009, 2:55 pm EST

You gotta be an out and out DM fan not to recognize the fact that Dumb Gahan is a certified a-hole, and wears his racial disdain, not on his sleeve, but on the syringe tracks on his arms. These guys have been fooling their unconditionals by singing over prerecorded tracks for years now, and anyone who appreciates their continual rehashing of their 80’s hits DESERVES the scam, much like Peruvian fans do their ‘dis’…

Anonymous | 10/15/2009, 3:09 pm EST

PLEASE!!!!! Doesn’t RS has anything better to do than to give in to ungrounded hearsay like some lowly tabloid? Then you even post the proof that he DID NOT say ‘Chile’. Congrats RS!! An all time low.

Anonymous | 10/15/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Obviously he says “Thank you very much, goodnight!” Nice “journalism” when you even post the video to refute your report :P

Anonymous | 10/15/2009, 5:05 pm EST

how lame! :D :D :D it’s so clear he says “thank you very much, good night”. like he always does…

anon | 10/15/2009, 5:12 pm EST

Rolling Stone… really? What happened to fact checking and real journalism. Your publication was once good and now you spread rumors that can easily be denied by listening to a live recording.

As with the end of every DM show, Dave says “Thank you, goodnight.” YouTube it if you need to you lazy “journalists.”

Anna | 10/15/2009, 6:00 pm EST

I kinda find it hilarious that a guy called “Tom Assdolby” is being negative on Depeche Mode, when the name sake musician (Thomas Dolby) is a fan. I love irony.

Onto the article. Mistakes happen guys. Even if Gahan said what RS thinks he did, it was most likely an honest mistake. Like them or not, DM have always put their fans first. Mistakes like these are few and should be forgiven.

In my limited DM concert experience I have also found that DM rarely say the name of the city they play in, and if they do they do it at the beginning of the concert in either a “hello ___” or How are you doing ___” When they leave, Gahan typically does what everyone else has been saying “Thank you, see you next time!” or “Thank you goodnight.”

puck | 10/15/2009, 6:09 pm EST

Not a fan of DM, but I can’t believe you ran the story without listening to the clip. He just didn’t say what you said he said. That’s two minutes of my life I’ll never get back

DPSM | 10/15/2009, 6:28 pm EST

GOOD NIGHT

Dencas | 10/15/2009, 6:28 pm EST

He said Thank you very much CHILDREN… do you really think they’re gonna tour around the world praising Chile? that’s a classic “thank you very much, children!”

DPSM | 10/15/2009, 6:30 pm EST

It is the same words every night, Dave is pretty predictable but all the same it work and routine, good night is what i heard, this from someone who bought Master & Servent the original release on Vinyl

ChrissyMacQ | 10/15/2009, 7:01 pm EST

Rolling Stone, admit you’re wrong. Admit that you did not do your homework – admit that you copied a news story without checking it out for yourself first.
He clearly says, “Good night”, not ‘Chile’.

brokedown | 10/15/2009, 7:46 pm EST

Saw them at the Atlantic Center, FL. They put on a great show no matter what the haters might say.

transoniqjohnny | 10/15/2009, 7:52 pm EST

D’yer Maker or Germayka? (Did you make her? Hahahaha Old LedZep inside joke!)

MS ComeonNOW | 10/15/2009, 8:59 pm EST

Best tour I have seen in 20 years. The crowds off the scale with excitement and the band is in top form. Anyone finding a way to knock DM 2009 tour is an idiot.

i hate this shit | 10/15/2009, 9:00 pm EST

rolling stone gives more coverage to fucking pop princesses than a real band like depeche mode

so disappointing

lus | 10/15/2009, 9:00 pm EST

Polémica Aclarada: Depeche Mode se despidió con su habitual frase: “Muchas gracias,. Niños ‘Corrigan su artículo que el error ya fue aclarado desde ayer Porque Siguen Con esa confusión.

lus | 10/15/2009, 9:02 pm EST

Controversy Clarified: Depeche Mode parted with his usual phrase, ‘Thank you very much, Children. “Corrigan his article that the mistake was cleared up since yesterday because they continue with that confusion

Tour de Force | 10/15/2009, 9:02 pm EST

Tom Ass…playing old hits. Are you kidding? No people are people, no Blas Rumours, No Everything Counts, No Behind the Wheel, You are an ignorant idiot. Biggest complaint you could make is lack of 80’s 90’s songs on this tour. This tour was electric. Band has never been more popular.

MikeM | 10/15/2009, 9:05 pm EST

God, DM never relavant? Best Electronic band off all time. Voted number one band of last 25 years by KROQ in LA by listeners 3 years in a row. Ya they are nobodies, jackas

Susanandjohnny | 10/15/2009, 9:10 pm EST

Dave Gahan one of the best front performers of all time!! Who can argue with that? Gahan, Bono, Gwen Stefani, any order, you can pick the other 2..but these 3 have be on any list.

Nitzer Ebb | 10/15/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Its clear as crystal:

Thank you very much, goodnight.

Stop writing shit.

Richard | 10/15/2009, 11:09 pm EST

DM reps are denying this tonight, saying Gahan used his customary “Thank you very much, goodnight!” as parting words.

Of course, RS will most likely not apologize.

melbournian | 10/16/2009, 12:13 am EST

Hey, I personally enjoyed this piece. I think U2 (reportedly jokingly) thanked Sydney at their Melbourne concert.

Really appreciate the clip from their concert – awesome and I hope they come to my corner of the world!

melbournian | 10/16/2009, 12:16 am EST

PS lighten up, everyone. This piece never dissed DM. In fact, it was a reminder to me that they are still around. I don’t care if they thank the wrong country, so long as I have the chance to see them.

jean | 10/16/2009, 1:28 am EST

he clearly said goodnight instead of chile.

Susan | 10/16/2009, 1:56 am EST

“Thank you very much, Good night” is Dave’s sign off after Never Let Me Down Again at every concert this tour. He said that at the four shows I saw. You posted the YouTube video, how about actually watching it! Rolling Stone does one or two favorable reviews on Depeche Mode, puts them on the front cover how many times? and disses them the rest of their 30 year career, of course you at RS don’t care if the information is correct or not, it’s another chance to stick one to Depeche Mode.

Angela | 10/16/2009, 3:31 am EST

THANK YOU VERY MUCH GOODNIGHT

GOODNIGHT
GOODNIGHT !!

and not Chile!!
C’mon!!It’s clear!
and really… GOODNIGHT to the person who spreaded this false news!!
The world is becoming a gossip!Compliments to Rolling Stones!
Learn to check the truth of news before posting this absurdities!

norwegian | 10/16/2009, 4:07 am EST

RS should straighten up the quality of their journalism, both in terms of what you write, and in terms of checking your sources. A part from that, I agree with melbournian, and hope RS has learned for the future, how to do good music journalism. Thank you, hope it gets better next time.

melbournianagain | 10/16/2009, 4:19 am EST

And just for my 5 cents’ worth.. I can see why someone might think it sounds like “Chile” because of how the last syllable sounds. I can also see how it might be “children” or “goodnight”. All these words are really different and I wouldn’t be able to make a definitive call on what he said from the footage.

sil | 10/16/2009, 4:46 am EST

it´s obvious he says thank you very much chilee, and i do think it´s important not to mix country names when you are giving a concert in a specific country with fans who are been waiting that band for years,,,, it´s the same as to fuck with someone and when you are about to have your orgasm you scream someone elses name!

Ronald McDouchebag | 10/16/2009, 5:50 am EST

hmm…sounds like ‘thank You Very Much, Good Night’ to me, but I can see how maybe it may sound like Chile.

Michel J | 10/16/2009, 8:55 am EST

Funny to see how rock “purists” still can’t cope with how successful or influential Depeche remains after 30 years of systematic bashing by the rock press. You guys will just find ANY bullshit to diss them in some way. You have to be as deaf as Beethoven, or as thick as “Tom Assdolby” to hear anything else but Dave G’s usual “thanks very much Goodnight” in this clip. Don’t know what the band woulod have to do to get the credit they deserve. Maybe a few solos here and there ? A Joe Satriani guest spot ? This article is beyond pathetic.

Anonymous | 10/16/2009, 9:20 am EST

This is ridiculous. Why is this even being reported as news. He said “Thank you everyone, goodnight.” Cmon, “Goodnight” is not anywhere close to “Chile”. G sounds nothing like Ch

Susan | 10/16/2009, 11:57 am EST

Children=los ninos
Goodnight=buenas noches

“Thank you very much, goodnight” is what Dave says in Peru, as he does after Never Let Me Down Again at all shows. When translated, noches (night) vs. ninos (children), and then retranslated back to English, everyone is confusing children with Chile. The English language is confusing. The confusion must be for everyone who doesn’t speak English as their first language and the translation isn’t good, since he’s yelling this at the end. The word “night” was the problem here. Not Dave’s geographically skills. He said hello Lima earlier in the concert. He didn’t mess up, the reporting of Rolling Stone, and all the news orgainzations running this false story messed up. Retract this now!

Rte66 | 10/16/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Thank you very much G’dnight! Gahan often eats his words at the end of a show as if in a hurry but it’s very clear in this clip. It is also rare for DM to end a show with a city name- he usually GREETS the city: Good evening city name. In the last 20 years, endings have been ‘thank you very much good night’ or ‘thank you see you next time’.

Kerrie | 10/16/2009, 7:06 pm EST

This is the same way that he closes every show I’ve ever seen (since 1990). In no way does it even sound like, “Chile.” Really, is this even news? Hasn’t Britney done something stupid today?

John 40 | 10/16/2009, 7:11 pm EST

Peruvians hate Chileans, they re very belligerent and resentful towards Chileans because they lost a war 200 years ago. They re taking Chile to the international court to regain some long lost territory and now they see the boggeyman everywhere they go, just check their papers, they’re obssessed with Chile..Im sure this guy didnt even say Chile, but theyre soooo obssessed! It had to be Chile tothem

Andy Bernard | 10/17/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Oh Dear Rolling stone! As Depeche would say WRONG! Dave says Thanks You Very Much “Goodnight”

Toni-Ann | 10/17/2009, 3:01 pm EST

clearly said “thank you very much. good night.” long live Dave and Depeche!

angel | 10/17/2009, 4:25 pm EST

even if i was dumb deaf and blind, I would still hear: “thank you very much, goodnight!”

As for Depechemode, there are no words to describe the love they have towards their fans.
Also on a positive note negative media sometime can still be good.

Becky G. | 10/17/2009, 10:25 pm EST

He said “Good Night”. That’s what he says everytime.

Becky Gahan | 10/18/2009, 2:13 am EST

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, CHILE!

Marcus | 10/18/2009, 2:08 pm EST

The singer says “Thank you very much, good night”

That RS writer and the editor need to apologize for distorting the facts ad creating a controversy just to make up some news. It was probably a slow news day…

Nataly | 10/18/2009, 2:29 pm EST

He said ..Thank you very much Chile

Anonymous | 10/18/2009, 3:53 pm EST

I HEARD “THANK YOU VERY MUCH CHILE” AND I WAS THERE! I ALSO RECORDED THE MOMMENT AND IT’S CLEAR, HOW CAN ALL OF YOU TALK ABOUT IT IF YOU WEREN’T THERE?. IT WAS VERY CLEAR AND ALL THE PEOPLE WAS “WTF!!”

IAMCHILEAN | 10/18/2009, 4:00 pm EST

HE NEVER SAID CHILE! HE SAID GOODNIGHT AND PERUVIANS HATE US SO THAT’S WHY THEY CREATED THIS WHOLE STORY ABOUT IT. IT’S SO CLEAR. IT SAYS “THANK YOU VERY MUCH GOODNIGHT” NOTHING ELSE, NOTHING MORE. ANYWAY DM IN CHILE WERE SO MUCH BETTER AS EVERYTHING.

MySecretGarden | 10/19/2009, 11:27 am EST

He said “thank you very much g’night” which is very English!

Jennifer | 10/19/2009, 5:00 pm EST

Are you people deaf? He said, “Thank you very much, good night,” like he always does. Plain as anything. People. Always trying to start controversy and fights over BS. So sad.

Anonymous | 10/20/2009, 9:29 pm EST

He very obviously says “goodnight.” What also needs to be understood is that it would be pretty awkward to say “thank you very much…. Chile” It doesn’t scan! Additionally, Gahan very rarely says “thank you” to the city or country at the end of a show. He usually says “hello…” to the city or country near the beginning of the show.

lululu | 10/20/2009, 11:03 pm EST

GOOD NIGHT! LOUD AND CLEAR!!NOW APOLOGIZE!

vale | 10/21/2009, 5:42 am EST

yeah, bastards, he’s obviously saying good night. i wish you a long and good night too, rolling shaits.

vale a. | 10/21/2009, 5:08 pm EST

I’m a native Spanish speaker and he doesn’t say CHILE. It’s pretty clear he says ‘good night’ in his very usual, particular way.

aaron | 10/23/2009, 12:38 am EST

same thing he has said @ every show for years and years.. “thank you very much, good night”.. it’s a trademark. rolling stone of all people should know this without thing. ridiculous article.. pathetic reporting with no research done. watch the end of any given depeche mode concert and you’ll have no doubts about what he said.

Anonymous | 10/23/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Thank you very much goodnight. Heard it clear as day.

tess | 10/27/2009, 6:58 am EST

quit posting half ass articles —he said “THANK YOU VERY MUCH GOODNIGHT” Clear as a bell

malu | 11/7/2009, 2:47 pm EST

words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm… excerpt from enjoy the silence. it says everything.
