On the Charts: “Crazy Love” Survives “Sonic Boom” as Buble Outsells Kiss

The Big News: The Kiss Army proved unable to defeat Michael Buble, as the Canadian crooner’s Crazy Love topped the Billboard Top 200 with 132,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Kiss and their Walmart-only Sonic Boom had to settle for second place with 108,000 copies, improving on the Number Three debut for Psycho Circus that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees scored in 1998. That album sold 110K in its first week, proving that the number of “Knights In Satan’s Service” haven’t diminished.

Toby Keith’s American Ride cracked 90K to finish in third, one spot ahead of last week’s champ, Barbra Streisand’s Love is the Answer. Rounding out the Top Five, and officially breaking into platinum status, was Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3, which topped a million in sales in its fifth week thanks to another 65,000 sold.

Debuts: Country musician Luke Bryan entered the charts at Six with Doin’ My Thing, selling 58,000 along the way. Other notable first weeks include the Backstreet Boys’ This Is Us, which bowed at Nine with 42,000 copies. Backstreet might be back, but it’s not alright: This Is Us sold a little over half the first-week copies of 2007’s Unbreakable. The week’s biggest disappointment was reserved for Tokio Hotel, however, as Humanoid could only muster a Number 35 debut and 17,000 copies sold.

Last Week’s Heroes: Even though Paramore’s Brand New Eyes topped Mariah Carey’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel when both debuted last week, Carey’s new album proved to be the more resilient of the two. Memoirs fell from Three last week to Seven, while Paramore plummeted from Two to out of the Top Ten after seven days, settling for 11 after more than three-quarters of its first week sales dropped off. Alice in Chains’ Black Turns to Blue followed suit, falling from five to 12 thanks to a 71 percent sales drop.

I don’t see how #35 is a disappointment for a foreign band’s album that debuted with hardly any promo

Rob | 10/14/2009, 11:40 am EST

I agree with the anonymous poster #35 is not band for a German band who really did not have a whole lot of promotional support in America.
I think they are doing pretty good considering.

Wayne Campbell | 10/14/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Luke Bryan’s new album is called “Doin’ My Thing” not “Doin’ My Time”. Typo! OH SNAP!!

anonymous fan | 10/14/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Okay…why is my comment not showing up. Too long? I’ll post it in parts then:

Tokio Hotel sold exactly what they were projected to sale, so I fail to see how this is a disappointment. The minimum estimate was 18K and they’re basically right at that amount.

anonymous fan | 10/14/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Did you guys even bother looking at the estimates before writing this drivel or did you just pull a random inflated number out of thin air just so you’d have an excuse to say something bad about the band? Why can I, as a mere fan, follow the estimates and view the results in context and you, as a professional music magazine, seem unable to do so?

Kris | 10/14/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Tokio Hotel did #1 in Germany, #2 in Italy, and #6 in Netherlands.
They’re just starting in America, so please, Rolling Stone, stop being so pessimist about this band.

Juli | 10/14/2009, 12:07 pm EST

I don’t see how anyone could say Tokio Hotel’s debut at #35 is a disappointment when they had hardly any promo at all. They certainly are not a household name here in the U.S.Plus many orders from Best Buy haven’t been fulfilled yet due to them not having enough in stock to complete all pre-orders.

Taryn | 10/14/2009, 12:08 pm EST

Oh disappointment for Tokio Hotel my ass. I’m so proud of them.

anonymous | 10/14/2009, 12:08 pm EST

Agree 100% anonymous and Rob. Tokio Hotel had no promo here and to be that high is amazing. Plus with the whole ordeal of Best Buy having the album on backorder and most not shipping til after the chart week.

Fisch | 10/14/2009, 12:13 pm EST

I don’t think #35 is disappointing considering they haven’t promoted the album in the US yet.

Juli | 10/14/2009, 12:16 pm EST

I don’t see how Tokio Hotel’s debut at #35 can be classified as a disappointment, let alone the biggest one of the week. They had virtually no promo here in the U.S. Plus Best Buy was unable to fill many preorders because of not having enough in stock.

Lyrico | 10/14/2009, 12:20 pm EST

Without any formal promotion in USA, #35 is not a disappointment for TOKIO HOTEL . HUMANOID has a long-line sale potential cos the music from this album is really great.

JasonTH | 10/14/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Know how KISS could’ve gotten to #1? If Wal-Mart actually, you know, PROMOTED the album!!

Gina | 10/14/2009, 12:41 pm EST

I agree with Rolling Stone here. #35 and 17,000 in sales is a definite disappointment for the new Tokio Hotel album. The numbers show virtually no growth from last year’s debut of Scream. That doesn’t mean their fanbase is somehow smaller or unchanged, though. This is a major failure on their U.S. label’s part to properly promote them, especially to their own existing fanbase. Starting a tv commercial campaign at the end of the first week of sales? Fail. Why weren’t those commercials in rotation 1-2 weeks BEFORE the album’s release? No review in People magazine or Spin? Fail. Practically non-existent print coverage in the U.S.? Fail. Zero airplay push? Fail. I do not understand the marketing strategy at play here, as it seems like they are still being treated like unknowns by their own label when that isn’t the case. But people cannot buy what they don’t know exists. You have to set expectations for people. Make a fuss, have promo, have it available and have it visible. The stores that did get the album only got a handful of copies each and few stores had posters/displays of any kind. The expectation of their label and retailers seemed to be low so its not surprising to me that first-week sales are in line with those expectations. Tokio Hotel has made a very good album and deserve better than that.

ursula | 10/14/2009, 1:08 pm EST

#35 is not bad at all. It could have been better, but the marketing strategy of Cherry Tree Records appears to be “sit back and watch miracles happen”, and if they don’t… well, then they don’t.
Not a miracle, but good. Writing them off at this point would be a big mistake, Rolling Stone.

mi9 | 10/14/2009, 1:10 pm EST

As for Tokio Hotel, yes it’s dissapointing, but not because their album is bad, Their album is great, and they top charts everywhere in Europe, America is not ready, there was no promotion. This is our European band and we love them. You can have those horrible Jonas Brothers and Lady gagas, we have Tokio Hotel.

mi9 | 10/14/2009, 1:13 pm EST

You can only be famous in America if you are A) Disney star. B) Idol. C) Michael Jackson D) You beat someone. E) Or you are on Twilight soundtrack. Thanks God Tokio Hotel is none of these.

RTunes | 10/14/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Michael Buble is to Frank Sinatra what Kenny G is to Miles Davis.

I guess there are more haus fraus in America than there are rock fans.

For real, though. | 10/14/2009, 1:40 pm EST

No promotional support for Tokio Hotel?! They have been touted all over the place from what I have seen, and were marketed with billing alongside – sometimes above – bands like the Jonas Brothers & Paramore at MTV-styled events and publications for over a year. The band that opened for the Jonas Brothers, who have gotten zero marketing besides playing those shows, outsold this band in their first week. I’d say this is pretty shocking and sad for Tokio Hotel.

ed veder | 10/14/2009, 1:50 pm EST

wal mart’s promotion sucked big way. i couldn’t find the cd….by the way ac/dc’s black ice was in every corner…..(ac/dc got Atlantic records…and Buble….) KISS release is independent….no record company…no mainstream airplay…..just the army….(cd was once again leaked 2 months ago…so everybody had download it…..and KISS fans knows how to use pc’s…..Buble fans(ha..ha) and Opra’s housewives cannot download so easily!!!!!!! Anyway in ten years time KISS will be again TOP 5 and Buble not even TOP 200!

Melinda | 10/14/2009, 1:54 pm EST

@For real, though. Please the Jonas Brothers have their own TV series on Disney and are constantly in American print and TV airings. Tokio Hotel has been on MTV internet sections such as Buzzworthy but there is no comparison with the Jonas Brothers PR machine. Tokio Hotel does get promo Europe and it shows-#1 in Germany, #2 in Italy, Spain, Portugal and #3 in France. What touting and marketing in America have you seen compared to what the Jonas Brothers have in America? Tokio Hotel themselves have done no physical promotion in America as of yet. They are supposed to be in America starting next week for a few days but then will be back in Europe.

KLAUS MEINE | 10/14/2009, 2:00 pm EST

TOKIO HOTEL are big fans of KISS (their parents actually because their German!!!!and KISS are BIG IN GERMANY)!!! BOTH ALBUMS ARE GREAT ……MUCH BETTER THAN BUBLE LA LA LA LO!!!

Anonymous | 10/14/2009, 2:29 pm EST

The KISS album is their best in years???!!!

Good one! It’s their ONLY album in 11 years!

Francis Parker | 10/14/2009, 2:32 pm EST

Tokio Hotel may suck, but damn their PR girl is amazing.

Such dedication, writing hundreds of similar messages, spouting off sales projections, pretending to be a ‘fan’.

Got to hand it to her, give her a raise!!

to The REAL tc: | 10/14/2009, 2:32 pm EST

The KISS album is their best in years???!!

Considering its their ONLY album in 11 years, I would think so!

vee | 10/14/2009, 2:48 pm EST

How is Humaniod a disappointment at #35? It’s the first week, my friend, and not even Rolling Stone knows exactly who the band is.

intheparkinglot | 10/14/2009, 3:12 pm EST

As pretty much everyone has said already, #35 is definitely not a bad position for a German band who did absolutely NO PROMO for the release of their album. The only thing that could be called promo was the short 10-15 second commercials that played very RARELY and during no-so-popular shows. The band was not physically in the US to help promote it, so #35 is absolutely amazing considering the circumstances. Hardly anyone knows about them, and they still sold a lot. They will be here for a week, then they are going back to Europe. Still, the week they’ll be here consists of only one thing to help promote the album (they’ll be on “It’s on with Alexa Chung” and will hold two signing sessions)So it looks like this album won’t be promoted at all for a while.

In all, I am a tad disappointed, but Tokio Hotel cannot be blamed for it. The album has the potential to be a #1 album (as it is already #1 in Germany and in the Top Ten in many other European countries) but it will never get there because of lack of promotion.

Sande | 10/14/2009, 3:15 pm EST

Tokio Hotel debuting at #35? Disappointing? Possibly, but the album has some great songs and I believe it will catch on here in the US. It just needs to be heard.

memoona | 10/14/2009, 3:35 pm EST

i honestly dont think #35 is bad. it’s in the top 50 isnt it? i think newhere in the billboard 200 is good cuz that means out of he thousands of albums out there, they’re the #35 best. thats dissappointing because…..?

N | 10/14/2009, 3:38 pm EST

I guess it kind of is a dissapointment for Tokio Hotels place on the charts. However I agree with those that say that there has not been a lot of promotion for their new album. Last year they were in America working hard, and they got a lot of attention, so people noticed. This year they haven’t done anything. I really cant count MTV articles as good promotion. I hope that this album will continue to climb the charts. Fingers crossed.

Dean Partridge | 10/14/2009, 4:15 pm EST

WHO ARE YOU KIDDING?!?! You’re the same person writing basically the same message over and over – you’re an insult to the intelligence and so are your stupid band Tokio Hotel!

Just give it up, you’re not fooling anyone!

ursula | 10/14/2009, 4:24 pm EST

@Dean: Before you accuse people of posting several times, you might consider not copying somebody else’s (just as wrong) statement, spiced up with more exclamation marks.

Anonymous | 10/14/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Unless it’s a story like Chris Brown, most stories on this site only get a couple random comments.

There’s absolutely no way in hell a band like Tokio Hotel is getting this many unique comments. It’s definitely 1 or 2 people posting over and over again.

Roeseann | 10/14/2009, 4:44 pm EST

I was actually really surprised that it debuted at #35 in the US. It’s a tough market to break. At least US are actually getting the album. It took FOREVER before I could find it in the UK. And since it’s imported, it costed me £12. Well hopefully the album will do better in the weeks to come.

Black Hole Sun | 10/14/2009, 5:16 pm EST

No one was expecting Tokio Hotel to debut at #1, but 35 IS pretty disappointing. However, the fact that these guys did not bother promoting their album here at all might’ve had a rather significant impact on the sales. I don’t listen to the radio, so I don’t know if their songs are getting any airplay. But I’ve obviously heard of these guys before, and I don’t listen to their music, they got some buzz here a couple years ago. Probably no one remembers them?

Jeff | 10/14/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Hmmm…Chinese Democracy wasn’t such a flop after all, was it?

AC/DC did 800k first week at WalMart, GN’R did 260k at Best Buy with no promotion or ‘display corners’, and Kiss only do 108k at WalMart.

Now THAT is a flop.

kimster1971 | 10/14/2009, 5:32 pm EST

Tokio Hotel are truly awful and a walking cliche

spacecase | 10/14/2009, 5:54 pm EST

Well #35 is good for any album with no promotion when you think about it.

I look at it this way-if you can get anybody to go to a store and buy your CD these days you should be grateful.

For real, though. | 10/14/2009, 6:02 pm EST

@Melinda Oh, I agree that Tokio Hotel have done no physical promotion in the US. Which has been really dumb…But what was preventing them? They did do shows and radio concerts last year. They got buzzy placement on MTV and mentions on Perez, etc.

Either way, the buzz about them in the pop music media in general has been that this was a band with a hardcore following that rivaled the Jonases. That’s apparently just not true. And you can say what you want about the Jonas Boys’ Disney PR machine, but in reality it probably loses them as many fans as it gains them, and they have really been earning, building and maintaining their fanbase by being on the road performing almost nonstop for over 4 years, focusing on becoming a better live band, since before Disney even signed them, in North & South America and Europe. They’re not exactly making hit singles, but it’s worked well enough for them on the album charts.

I’m just saying the buzz around Tokio Hotel was out of proportion to the reality, and if they really want to chart well like they say (it’s not exactly the be all and end all, anyway), they would be well-advised to give physical promotion a harder try.

I just wonder if they will, or if they’ll give up on the States.

Phabio | 10/14/2009, 6:07 pm EST

I guess I’m here to repeat what everyone else is saying, but oh well. I’m saying it anyway.

Tokio Hotel has barely promo’d here. Their music video has been played and there have been some TV advertisements, but those types of things will only remind people that already know about them that a new album is coming out. America has barely had a taste of their new material and TH didn’t have a very strong foothold in America to begin with. In comparison to Scream, TH hasn’t suffered at all. Their fanbase is the same as it was, all they need to do is expand it. I daresay that their promotion here last year increased their popularity exponentially, and just because they didn’t enter at #1 like in Germany doesn’t mean they failed. Let’s be honest; the album is going to drop quickly because only current fans right now are buying the album, and once they have it, they have it. However, I do have faith in CherryTree’s marketing plan: look at the monstrous success that Lady Gaga, their labelmate, received. Granted, comparing Tokio Hotel and Gaga is like comparing apple and oranges, but you have to give CT credit where credit is due. I think with the right amount of marketing and media support, Humanoid could become a great success—but not before TH comes to America [which is next week, by the way] and does some proper promotion.

heathen2002 | 10/14/2009, 6:11 pm EST

One thing Gene Simmons can’t brag about. Thank God!!!

Phabio | 10/14/2009, 6:14 pm EST

@intheparkinglot– The only announced appearances so far are the ones that you listed, I’m sure that TH will be promoting 24/7 while they’re here. There are still interviews from early September in France showing up, so TH has probably lined up all sorts of interviews, appearances, and performances to do while they’re here and they might show up intermittently right up till TH is here again—I would estimate December, but that’s only my wild guess. TH knows very well that the U.S. is their toughest market and they won’t waste a trip to the States.

Phabio | 10/14/2009, 6:23 pm EST

@For real, though.
It’s true that TH has an extremely concentrated fan base that gives them the impression of being far more popular than they are. Their fans are extremely devoted but that’s a misleading way to judge their popularity; they’re put in the media here because of clever marketing and a very, very vocal fanbase. And while TH is often mentioned here and there in media, they have not been physically in America for almost a year, and definitely not at the most crucial time: their CD release. Three second mentions on MTV and E! news doesn’t make new fans, just pleases the old ones. TH has plenty of potential but it’s often misunderstood and handled poorly. The media doesn’t understand TH and judges them too quickly, while the fans fight tooth and nail to get them noticed. TH would not exist if they didn’t have such an intense fanbase.

Also, to answer your question; TH has not been here because Europe is their priority. They have been promoting over there like crazy; America comes next.

Vnlasteamer | 10/14/2009, 6:39 pm EST

What nonsense. Tokio Hotel is owning the charts across Europe. Their last album debuted at #39 in the US, and then they got Best New Artist at the VMAs. They haven’t been here yet to do promo. This is an amazing chart place for a foreign band with little history in America. They did what was anticipated for the first week. We’re all super stoked for the album. I own eight copies – four digital, four physical. They’re going to sell boatloads more albums when they come here for signings. I guarantee you nobody in TH management is sitting around moping over this. They’re doing fabulously.

xoxonikki | 10/14/2009, 6:50 pm EST

Considering that there has been zero promotion in the US about the album, it debuting at #35 IMO is really good!

Don’t be disappointed just yet- you don’t know what these boys can do! ;)

Kim | 10/14/2009, 6:53 pm EST

@RTunes:LOL. So true re Buble.

But this frau bought both English & German versions of Tokio Hotel, grew up head-banging to KISS & Metallica at high-school dances, and has both Frank Sinatra & Miles Davis on her iPod.

I would suggest to you and to some of the naysayers here that there is more to Tokio Hotel than a quick glance/listen reveals. Humanoid is a great rock/pop/electronica album.

saltydogfish | 10/14/2009, 7:02 pm EST

Yes,agree agree. But I think they should have kicked off a tour here just after it was released. They headlined MTV Day in Athens,Greece last weekend and 16,000 crazed people(kids, moms, and yes dads like me)sung the lyrics to every new song.Go figure. The US broadcast of that will help quite a bit although MTV has not said when this will be.I see why Tom said they could not wait to do HUMANOID live. They sounded great to put it mildly

Michael Buble | 10/14/2009, 7:49 pm EST

I own Kiss and I own America! Sinatra’s got nothing on me!

Vnlasteamer | 10/14/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Oh, and @ Francis Parker and Dean Partridge:

Don’t be ridiculous. As great as TH is, as wonderful as they are at making great music – their PR SUCKS. The fans know most of what’s being said before they do. They have one dude who is both their manager and their producer and also releases most of their press statements.

We are real fans. We’re not the same person. You can’t see this for yourself, but Rolling Stone can. They should be able to see our IP addresses, which will be different and from all over the world.

It shouldn’t surprise you that Tokio Hotel fans are articulate and informed. What’s your idea of a typical fangirl? Let me guess. She’s thirteen. She’s has no friends, no interests, is doing badly in school, and so she escapes by fantasizing about things. She likes to shop at Hot Topic. She can’t spell or use proper grammar.

But we’re different. We’re crazy and insanely devoted, but that’s where the resemblance stops. We have the thirteen-year old girls, but we also have their older sisters and their mothers and their grandmothers and a scattering of guys. We managed to find out about a foreign band that has been mostly promoted over the Internet. We’re resourceful and interested in things outside of mainstream culture. Many of us speak multiple languages. We are beautiful, talented women. We attend college or have professional careers. We like to network and travel and have adventures in the lifestyle of loving this band. We have radio shows and newspaper columns. We know how to look up statistics and write intelligently.

Surprise.

Leah | 10/14/2009, 8:19 pm EST

maybe this is rolling stone’s fault for writing a pointless review that was more about bill’s hair than the music. “melodically anemic?” please… did you even listen to the whole album?

laura | 10/14/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Tokio hotel did very well they are just starting here in America, seriously cut them some slack.

JK | 10/14/2009, 8:35 pm EST

#35 is not good but it is also not that bad considering Tokio hotel has done no promotion of the album in the US. They have been absent for almost a year in the US. No concerts, no promos, no tv, no radio…
They only appeared in a few articles in the internet from time to time and that’s it.

So considering all that, i think it was not that bad, especially for a german band.

At least their new album is a hit all over Europe, just look at the charts position.

afaz | 10/14/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Kiss don’t deserve to be # 1. They played us for a fool with their “Farewell Tour” that is still going.

omota | 10/14/2009, 9:47 pm EST

I agree with afaz. Before Kiss stood for fun, rocking music. Now it’s all about $$$$$$$$$$.What, does Gene need another mansion. I used to be a big kiss fan.Kiss, what a joke. It’s Paul and Gene and those other two goons.

Diana | 10/14/2009, 9:53 pm EST

My husband brought this to my attention because I’m a huge TH fan.

Humanoid is an awesome CD, they sound great, more mature & the added sound elements and layers of vocals are terrific.

They’re already huge in Europe, obviously and have a super loyal fan base (worldwide). How many bands can say that? They’ve been doing TV shows, interviews & concerts in Europe and are coming to the US next week. TH are just getting started on their US promotions. Also, the sales don’t reflect all the fans that downloaded their CD from I-Tunes.

I hope they do well, they deserve success here, it’s great music and should be heard by new fans as well the established ones.

Paul | 10/14/2009, 10:08 pm EST

I am sorry, but #35 is really pathetic. 17k albums sold? That is a ridiclously low number even on the lowballing 2009 charts. They’re behind a whole bunch of people with LESS promo and being foreign is irrelevant in the modern market. They had more promo than some American artists ahead of them.

thecatsass | 10/14/2009, 11:19 pm EST

Tokio Hotel are TERRIBLE!!

So | 10/14/2009, 11:26 pm EST

The American bands that are on the top in the us, are nowhere to be found on top of the European charts…….so RS are you saying your only hot if you are #1 in the us? & nothing else matters around the world, when it comes too being #1? America needs to get over it self!! your not the only people on this earth!! Well then you can have that fat, old, zit faced, Bill Kaulitz knockoff- Adam Lambert than!

Porsche | 10/14/2009, 11:41 pm EST

I think that number is pretty decent considering the lack of promo here and radio play. Still love you TH!

Sam | 10/14/2009, 11:43 pm EST

#35 may not be great but Tokio Hotel is doing great in Europe with their album. America, of course, is important but is certainly not the only market out there. This band is very popular in South America and I will be interested to learn of the numbers when the album is released there. I don’t know what is going on in the minds of their American label with no promo but they certainly have been busy plugging in Europe and it has paid off. I find this band interesting- not only with their music but with their personalities. They can be raunchy and vulgar (and very funny) which I find to be a breath of fresh air compared to the manufactured sweetness of the Disney stars which they are often unfortunately compared to.

Anahi | 10/15/2009, 12:23 am EST

I don’t know what is your problem with Tokio Hotel, but these guys are from Germany and are just being known in the US, so I don’t see why being in #35 in the charts is dissapointing.
And by the way, Humanoid is better than other english albums that got released lately, so don’t say that these guys are not good musicians.

rarrkun | 10/15/2009, 12:54 am EST

@Paul, while I don’t think #35 is great, I’m not sure it’s really fair to compare them with American bands that generally have bigger and more stable following than them. America is where they started out and they have the advantage of building up a fanbase there over an extended period of time. Tokio Hotel doesn’t have that. So I think the whole “foreign band” argument is somewhat valid.

#35 isn’t good at all, but it isn’t dismal either. They definitely could’ve done better, but that’s what they get for dropping an album with virtually zero promo (random articles all over the internet hardly counts).

ursula | 10/15/2009, 2:14 am EST

@Anonymous: TH fans have the largest online presence I have ever seen, they don’t need two people to post over and over. (Granted, this is my third post, but I always use the same name ;-P)
How do you think they won the VMA against Cyrus and Perry last year? With two people voting over and over…? Use your brain and think. The handful comments here is nothing compared to what we did, before.

belinda | 10/15/2009, 3:24 am EST

Tokio Hotel is a German band, so I think 35 is very good. I am very proud of them, they are nr 1 all over Europe now!

deen | 10/15/2009, 3:26 am EST

landing at 35 is a disappointment…having no promo is just an explanation (or theory, rather) for why it happened. if it stays at 35 for 52 weeks, however, we’ve got a winner. labels focus so much on week 1, they forget how nice it would be to make money all year long on one release.

Betlic | 10/15/2009, 3:38 am EST

In fact #35 is a little bit disappointing. I thought such a great album should be in Top 10. Anyway Tokio hotel need more promo in USA where many people even don’t know about this band. Moreover the music of this German band is so beautiful and amazing. it deserves more attention. I hope in the America Tokio hotel can be as successful as they’re in the Europe.

Dude, what have you been reading? We KNOW what magazines TH has been in and they must certainly have NOT had the same amount of publicity and coverage as Jonas Brothers. Bad example. Site your sources or back off with that because it is SIMPLY not true.

And you think “opening for the Jonas Brothers” = zero marketing. Please. That sir, is just silliness.

But thanks for not including the name of the band so we can’t fact check because guess what, not everyone is a JoBro fan.

Get used to Tokio Hotel. They are hear to stay

Alexa | 10/15/2009, 9:18 am EST

#35 at first sight may seem disappointing, but well, i agree with most comments that given the band’s foreign status: Germans trying to break through USA, this is quite a good start, and should be kept improving.

yes, TokioHotel fans are really loyal, cuz it’s either you love or hate TH. all we fans have to wait for, is for America to accept this new, different taste (other than disney stars, & anything else american).

WE <3 TOKIO HOTEL =)

C ouldn’t agree more! (sorry about my post above, accidently hit submit before I finished)

RS’s critique of Humanoid was wrong on so many levels I don’t know where to begin.

TH would have been an awesome RS cover . . . but wait the JB’s were on twice? Really RS what kind of rock’n roll mag are you? You’d have an opportunity for big sales if you put TH on your cover with an interesting article/interview inside. Good music isn’t only made in the US & UK! Gasp! (& really nothing personal against the JB’s, I think the animosity between TH & JB fans is silly.)

Sonic Boom is a very, very good Rock album, and a great KISS album – and it is now the highest charting album of their career.

WalMart didn’t live up to their end of the deal, as their promotion of the album was lackluster at best – and Sonic Boom STILL sold as many copies in a bad economy as Psycho Circus did 11 years ago in a good economy. And online pirating wasn’t nearly as much of an issue in 1998 as it is now.

Sonic Boom is a winner. The #1 ROCK album of the week, and with good reason.

joey | 10/15/2009, 11:27 am EST

do yourself a favor and go buy a old ramones cd

Shredder927 | 10/15/2009, 11:58 am EST

hey what wrong with the ramones? and the KISS album is really good and who the hell is this bubble guy anyway?

Shredder928 | 10/15/2009, 12:00 pm EST

and one things for sure….Buble cant sell out the garden!

Jason Steele | 10/15/2009, 1:10 pm EST

Michael Buble…my God where has talent sunk to!

Eggsalad | 10/15/2009, 2:36 pm EST

My PEE PEE BURNS!

XR73 | 10/15/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Congrats KISS & Tokio Hotel – just getting some straight-up rock charting anywhere in the Top 50 is good news. KISS haters/”former fans” – KISS has been all about making $$$ for over 30 years now. This is news to you?? Get over it already.

I seem to recall a lot more promotion out there in advance for AC/DC’s “Black Ice.” Not so much with KISS’ “Sonic Boom.” So, just the fact that they came in @ #2 is pretty good, considering what could’ve been done to better promote it. Whether that’s really the fault of KISS’ team or Walmart, no one seems to know the whole story.

Eggsalad | 10/15/2009, 2:38 pm EST

No one who partakes in online pirating listens to fucking Kiss.
In fact, people who own computers, have all their teeth and don’t fuck their daughters don’t generally listen to Kiss.

Eggsalad | 10/15/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Tokio Hotel sucks.

basser | 10/15/2009, 3:23 pm EST

I wonder if Buble would have outsold Kiss had “Sonic Boom” been available everywhere, not just at Walmart. I know of friends who are die-hard Kiss fans, but wouldn’t go near Walmart to buy the album. Had “Sonic Boom” been available at Best Buy, Hastings and all the other outlets (physical and online), it might have bursted Michael B.

Go-Go-Gomer Partridge | 10/15/2009, 5:08 pm EST

The only mention of Tokio Hotel in the top music press is as a nominee for ‘Worst Band’ (NME) and as ‘band I’d like to see fall off the face of the earth’ (Pitchfork) and a scathing review in RS.

They stink! plain and simple.

Stogie D | 10/15/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Nice ‘Knights In Satan’s Service’ line…what is this, 1977?? Everyone knows KISS doesn’t stand for anything.

Jan | 10/15/2009, 8:21 pm EST

@Go-Go-Gomer Partridge Wow you sure have a hard-on for Tokio Hotel. Bill excite you a little too much? If you don’t like them why so much effort to look up info on them? A good thing that you aren’t gonna be forced to listen to them. Take a chill pill and focus on music that you do like and quit wasting time on a band that you don’t like. Geez.

Caitlin | 10/15/2009, 11:58 pm EST

@Go-Go-Gomer Partridge:

Art is subjective. Not everybody likes the same music.

But Tokio Hotel actually smell great. How do I know this? A fourth of Bill’s towel from their Las Vegas show last August, happily residing in my possession.

His sweat smells like hairspray and the faintest hint of smoke. Awesome smell. :)

If you’re worried about smell, maybe YOU should go take a shower. A cold one. Then you can get over your frustrated, suppressed lust for this band.

Cheers. :)

non_amos | 10/16/2009, 12:14 am EST

Most Wal Mart stores I’ve seen have the ‘KISS Korner’ but I went to one this week that didn’t even seem to know what I was talking about. One of the managers or whatever he was exactly tried to show me the CD which I already have. He actually had to go & ASK someone else about the KISS Korner.

Apparently they didn’t have it, but on the way out, near the checkout, I DID see a ‘mini-KISS Korner’. It had next to NOTHING! It was primarily the M&Ms & the T-shirts. Obviously Wal Mart didn’t do KISS justice.

I don’t know if LEGALLY KISS can do it or not, but if I were them, AFTER this initial part of the promotion is over, I’d release it EVERYWHERE! Best Buy, Target, FYE, Independents, you name it! Promote it as the WIDE release or whatever but DO IT!

Oh, & vinyl too, please?

kaulitzFever | 10/16/2009, 6:12 am EST

you are tooo hard on tokio hotel they guys are on TWENTY for gods sake. and make better music then sum of these saggy old farts who have been in teh “music industry” for so much longer…. GET REAL hahahaa

MWAHAHAHA

ron | 10/16/2009, 8:47 am EST

all bands get downloaded egg it was on youtube a month before release but the point is cd sales charts and billboard only reflect a portion of actual copies out there

Andre | 10/16/2009, 11:35 am EST

This Is Us – Album of the year!!

Bradt | 10/16/2009, 11:36 am EST

KISS rocks, Sonic Boom sounds great to me.
They sold out Madison Square Garden over the weekend.
Why no review of SB on this website? Rolling Stone is a crappy excuse for a “rock” mag. Another Madonna cover–who cares?
It’s why I cancelled my subscription years ago. KISS should be on the cover.

Dan Walimaa | 10/16/2009, 10:55 pm EST

I love Sonic Boom. Been listening to it for days now. I didn’t even know they had a new album out until I happened to stumble upon it while checking out the DVDs at Wal Mart. I saw it and said, Cool! I’ve been a KISS fan for 33 years, and I think it is one of their best albums.

Dan Walimaa | 10/16/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Is that right? AC/DC’s Black Ice sold 800,000 copies it’s first week? That’s amazing! Gotta give it up to AC/DC. I listened to their new songs on You Tube and they seemed okay, but, not enough interest for me to want to buy it. Good for them though.

meangene | 10/17/2009, 10:03 am EST

The E. Colonial Dr. WalMart here in Orlando didn’t have a KISS KORNER, even though it was on a list of stores provided on kissonlne.com. It had the CD but that’s it. I spoke with the Asst Mgr who told me the nearest KISS KORNER was 30 miles in a suburb, Lake Mary.

james4369 | 10/17/2009, 10:49 pm EST

KISS has always been about the money so get over it. ALL bands are in it for money, KISS is just honest about it! Sonic Boom is an amazing rock record and should have been number one! With Queen Oprah pushing Buble and he still only beat KISS by 30K shows the power of KISS!! As far as the people that cry ‘Where’s Ace and Peter??’ go, they can check any rehab center or meth lab and I am sure they will find them there! Both f**ked up a good thing and never earned their place with KISS in the first place. Gene, Paul, Eric , and Tommy rock hard and rock on!!

kissasylum | 10/19/2009, 6:25 pm EST

While KISS CD sales could be considered a letdown, Sonic Boom has NOT received the push that many other single-store exclusives get. Also, for anyone to suggest that Guns ‘N Roses got no push for Chinese Democracy is a joke. I mean, it only took 15 years to make. :) G ‘N R fans, including yours truly, were constantly subjected to “it’ll be out this date…uh…no…it won’t…to the point that many of us thought it would never come out. No Hard Rock CD in my memory, (I’m 29) has ever received even CLOSE to the hype and anticipation that thing did. It FLOPPED, and it was/is TERRIBLE. AC/DC and KISS still rule. Axl should put the REAL G ‘N R back together or go back to being a hermit.

Jeremy | 10/29/2009, 1:25 pm EST

WOW its hard to believe that KISS Sonic Boom has dropped from number 2 to number 11. I dont understand why this album has not been promoted more. The album itself is great. its better than AC/DC Black Ice.(I like both bands)and as far as touring goes this current tour KISS is much better LIVE. saw AC/DC live on the Black Ice tour and the show was ok, but there age is showing, saw KISS live at Bi-Lo center and was BLOWN AWAY. Dont miss your chance to see KISS live, they are still AWESOME. And go buy a copy of SONIC BOOM. To people who complain, hey just be glad that KISS are still able to make albums and still tour. Lets enjoy them while we still can.
KISS RULES!!! Hope they make another record soon. And to my brothers and sisters in the KISS army “NEVER STOP ROCKING”

Pat | 10/29/2009, 1:34 pm EST

If KISS isnt inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame I am going to SCREAM. Its lame how LL Cool J gets a nomination. LAME. I know it and so does every other fan both past and present of rock music. So exactly when does Judas Priest get nominated for the hip hop R&B hall of fame??? Nuff said.
KISS NATION let your voices be heard. KISS should be in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. KISS RULES!!
Again nominating LL Cool J is an insult to all fans of rock music.
LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME

non_amos | 10/30/2009, 1:13 am EST

KISS was ROBBED by the one-two punch of Michael Buble & Oprah! If ‘Crazy Love’ hadn’t been moved up to the SAME WEEK as Sonic Boom, then Sonic Boom would’ve been #1! But someone HAD to have it RELEASED EARLY to coincide with Buble’s appearance on Oprah! I think someone INTENTIONALLY did this! Mark my words, KISS were ROBBED! And chances are that was their LAST chance for a #1 album. Maybe KISS should’ve been on Oprah instead? I smell conspiracy theory!

And you’re right about Judas Priest. WHY on Earth bands like THIS don’t get nominated & rap stars do is anyone’s guess?!

Jake | 11/14/2009, 2:55 pm EST

@Jason Steele

Where has talent sunk to?? Michael Buble has an amazing voice!!

Oprah doesn’t even need to push his album, in fact, I didn’t even know that Oprah was pushing it and I went out and bought it. KISS should have been done a while ago, Gene Simmons is just a money whore who just needs to stop.
