Madonna Looks Back: The New Issue of Rolling Stone

In January 1984 Madonna had just one album under her belt when she told American Bandstand’s Dick Clark she had lofty plans: “To rule the world.” (Watch the rarely seen clip here, in our Iconic Madonna Moments gallery.) Over the past three decades, she has provoked, innovated and inspired; she’s set and broken her own records, most recently wrapping the highest-grossing tour ever by a solo artist with her Sticky & Sweet show. And now that she’s released the two-disc retrospective Celebration, the pop superstar who rarely looks back sat down with Rolling Stone’s Austin Scaggs for a revealing trip through her early days in New York, some of her biggest scandals, and of course, her most massive hits in our new issue, on stands today.

Celebrating Madonna: Look back at her 50 most iconic moments in photos and videos.

Even as a seventh grader in Michigan, Madonna reveals she knew how to push her audience’s buttons. For her first ever performance, “I had my girlfriends paint my body with fluorescent hearts and flowers,” she recalls of a rendition of the Who’s “Baba O’Riley” that left her fellow students speechless. “I wore a pair of shorts and a midriff top, and I just went mad. … I’m sure everyone thought I was insane. That was the beginning of my provocative performances, I guess.”

Get a look at photos from Madonna’s record-shattering Sticky & Sweet tour.

But having innate stage savvy didn’t mean Madonna grew up a wild child. Though she tells Scaggs about her days as a graffiti artist when she was running with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat in New York City (her tag: Boy Toy), life was tamer before that. “I was a geek in high school. I didn’t really have a drink until I got divorced for the first time [from Sean Penn] when I was 30,” she admits. ” ‘Geek’ is not a word anyone uses to describe me, except perhaps [Confessions on a Dance Floor producer] Stuart Price, who once said, ‘You know, you’re a nerd at heart, nobody knows it.’ I took it as a compliment.”

Check out all of Madonna’s dozen Rolling Stone covers.

She credits her first major shift in style — from punky brunette club kid to blonde wedding wonder — to getting dressed and styled for more photo shoots and videos as her career progressed. “I think people put a lot of emphasis on the whole reinvention of my image, and it’s always been a lot less calculated than people think,” she says. ” I think it’s boring to stay the same. A girl likes to change her look.” But if she had to pick her worst fashion moment: “It was the purple lipstick, fluorescent-green sweater combo. … It’s OK, it was the Eighties. It was a bad-hairstyle era. Let’s face it.”

But Madonna doesn’t have many musical regrets. She tells Scaggs about writing “Live to Tell” and “Vogue,” returning with a head full of brand-new ideas on Ray of Light and teaming with some of the industry’s biggest hitmakers on Hard Candy. But after all these years, she admits she still can’t sniff out a Number One. “I’ve never been a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not. The songs that I think are the most retarded songs I’ve written, like ‘Cherish’ and ‘Sorry,’ a pretty big hit off my last album, end up being the biggest hits,” she tells RS. ” ‘Into the Groove’ is another song I feel retarded singing, but everybody seems to like it.”

Madonna’s Rolling Stone interview is on newsstands now. Stay tuned for bonus Q&A from Scaggs’ conversations with Madonna, and don’t miss our look back at the megastar’s most iconic moments.

Thank you for using an old photo.

Her current 51 year old veiny arms scare the hell out of me.

Clint | 10/14/2009, 11:22 am EST

She’s amazing no matter how she looks!

heathen2002 | 10/14/2009, 11:22 am EST

Really? Does she need to be on the cover AGAIN?

curtis | 10/14/2009, 11:24 am EST

what a petty remark.

paula smith | 10/14/2009, 11:42 am EST

ii love this woman, she has so much personality,,,beyonce and the orher stupid girls cant even comete.

WW1023 | 10/14/2009, 11:58 am EST

The “to rule the world” clip is not “rarely” seen. I’ve seen it a million times and I’m not even a big fan.

If you’re going to dish on other artists, you should at least spell correctly. And what’s the point with comparing everyone? Why can’t there be room for Beyonce and Madonna? She’s not the end all be all regardless of how successful she is. She’d be the first to tell you there’s room for everyone. And I seriously doubt with her success that Beyonce is even close to stupid.

Anonymous | 10/14/2009, 12:10 pm EST

seriously w.t.f…
im seriously considering cancelling my subscription im so tired of this shit.

josh | 10/14/2009, 12:12 pm EST

ok like are you being serious with this??

im seriously considering cancelling my subscription.

Starrf*cker | 10/14/2009, 12:45 pm EST

Young people are annoying and have no sense of history. Face it, Madonna sells magazines period, besides its an Herb Ritts photograph.

Todd | 10/14/2009, 12:47 pm EST

No one can deny that she’s pretty much a living legend. The contributions that she’s made to pop music and pop culture as a whole are unmatchable by any other current female artists… And she’s still going! And she has brains when she opens her mouth which makes a Madonna interview more interesting to read than a Beyonce interview or Britney Spears interview. That’s probably why she’s on the cover AGAIN… I have a feeling this is nowhere close to the last time either.

carlooney | 10/14/2009, 12:59 pm EST

come on, into the groove is not for retarded!! understing the statement however..

Giannis Drakos | 10/14/2009, 1:00 pm EST

A 5* story and cover for Rolling Stone. In fact, all the best Rolling Stone covers, all have Madonna on them.Well Done!

Bruno | 10/14/2009, 1:13 pm EST

Madonna still is the most played artist on Brazil’s radio stations. Her last shows here stopped the country. I don’t understand why her age is such an issue in USA! What’s the matter? Is she the only person that gets old? Won’t Beyonce or Britney get old too? It seems that USA didn’t learn anything with Michael Jackson’s early death. Enjoy Madonna while she’s still working. The hole World is doing that but USA. Madonna is a legend.

Jason | 10/14/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Madonna is a true legend and the Queen of Pop. No other pop artist even comes close to having the number of hits she’s had, not even MJ. She is simply the most influential female artist of all time. Even non fans should recognize that.

Anonymous | 10/14/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Thank you WW1023, my thoughts exactly. I see that clip all of the time without even trying.

I’d prefer to see her clip with Wayne/Garth on SNL form around 1990.

YO | 10/14/2009, 1:32 pm EST

the wait for a good rolling stone cover is looking like it will take as long as the wait for Chinese Democracy…

Rabbitbunny | 10/14/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Lady Madonna, thanks for your beautiful songs and your artful look at life. You are an inspiration and friend to me. Cheers!

Not a fan | 10/14/2009, 1:38 pm EST

really..”retarded”. Madonna, you’re an adult, you write children’s books, no-longer an icon, but still, nice way to throw a word around. Idiot.
(and most influential female artist of our time? I don’t think so. So many more female artists are more talented, more creative and more original. Just because you sell a lot of records? Doesn’t impress me, and doesn’t mean a thing)

KIDBILLY | 10/14/2009, 1:42 pm EST

I was a huge fan of hers for YEARS, but just kind of lost my penchant for her with Hard Candy. And she contradicts herself a lot with stories of her past. I’ve read her talk about her days in NYC doing ecstasy and drinking and partying and here she says she didn’t drink until she was 30. It’s like which is it? Read all her extensive interviews about her past and the stories don’t all gel. I’m not knocking her body of work or her impact on music, just wish she’d keep her stories straight. And why does everyone feel the need to knock current artists when praising Madonna? Seriously people. I’m not a huge Beyonce fan, but you can’t knock that girl either. She has one heck of a body of work for someone her age. Even Madonna has said in the past that she hates that in this industry they’re always pitting women against each other and the people on here are no better. You are allowed to say you love and worship Madonna without slamming another artist in the same paragraph.

RadoslavGagov | 10/14/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Even though a lot of people say that she’s old and stuff and she should quit making music, her last tour proved them wrong. ‘Cause only live a singer can prove his/her qualities to sing. I don’t claim she has the bes voide, ’cause she hasn’t, but there aren’t many people who can sing and dance simultaneously. She’s still The Queen!

Gioia | 10/14/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Beautiful picture. Madonna is an icon in the American culture -that simple. Yes, some people would love to see her buried because she has done mostly everything she pleases by being a “geek” indoors and a mega star in public. We can only fancy to do what this woman has accomplished and therefore we love to hate her out of envy. Madonna is beautiful and yes, successful women will always be attacked by shallow and mediocre people who find it amusing to be offensive. We seldom talk about a man’s veiny arms, bulding stomach or bold face, I wonder why. Madonna you look just fine and you are a good embassador of the United States in the world.

S&S | 10/14/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Indisputably one of the most successful recording artists of all time. Let’s just leave it at that.

Sebastian | 10/14/2009, 3:14 pm EST

Happy to see RS used an old photo with Madonna’s real face before the scary cheek implants and fillers.

I agree with KIDBILLY: you can’t really believe anything this woman says about her past as she is constantly trying to rewrite her history.

SpacelySprokects | 10/14/2009, 3:15 pm EST

@Gioia. There were so many mistakes and falsehoods in your post that I hardly know where to start.

There are some people who genuinely dislike Madonna, and it has nothing to do with jealousy.

I have deeply held traditional values, and Madonna frequently violates those values with her trashy videos, lifestyle, etc., which is one reason of many I don’t support her.

Male celebrities also get criticized over their physical appearance, such as rocker Mick Jagger and an aging Val Kilmer, or Arnold Schwarzenegger, with his sagging beer belly.

So no, Madonna is not being attacked over her physical appearance because people are sexist.

Madonna is being ridiculed because she looks like a sinewy, veiny corpse.

There are other female celebrities her age who manage, unlike Madonna, to look feminine and healthy.

Your comment about people finding it amusing to be offensive is hypocritical (and untrue) because it was Madonna herself who got free publicity for herself by intentionally trying to offend people, by acting and dressing raunchy in music videos and so forth.

BAE | 10/14/2009, 3:27 pm EST

They used an older photo because what she is plugging is a retrospective of her amazing body of work.. its refreshing to see a woman of her age still on top of her game. Thank you Rolling Stone I can not wait for this issue to come to my mail box!

earle | 10/14/2009, 3:59 pm EST

love her,

all you haters can suck it

E.C.I | 10/14/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Thank you Todd. Madonna is a living legend. Some people just don’t get her and never will. I am a fan of more than 25 years and I hope it lasts for another 25!

Lame | 10/14/2009, 4:06 pm EST

Rolling Stone lost touch a long time ago. They just beat the dead horse now until nobody reads them anymore. Almost as cool as a VMA medley.

macb | 10/14/2009, 4:13 pm EST

One of the biggest wastes of space in human history. Is this the magazine that in 1967 covered the counterculture?? WTF? She belongs on the cover of Star and the National Enquirer. Can’t sing, can’t dance, can’t write a convincing lyric or hook; sure knows how to manipulate the media, however.

ahem (over the hill) | 10/14/2009, 4:17 pm EST

she’s talentless, over the hill and her music sucks she shouldn’t be on this magazine or even in music at all

she’s a media tool

Anthony David Corvino | 10/14/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Madonna is a true ICON. She is the defintion of one. Successful, talented, outspoken, a good person at heart. She is a supporter of all walks of life. Remember judgement of an artist of her caliber can only be compared to Madonna equals SUCCESS. We all strive to be the best we can be. Well so has she. The difference is She is on top. Let’s show support for her success not envy or anger. You can be on top too. Make your dreams a reality for you. Good Luck and God Bless.

Anthony David Corvino | 10/14/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Madonna is the definition of a true ICON. Like it or not. Her success has everything to do with her intelligence and talent.

Lele | 10/14/2009, 4:34 pm EST

i totally agree w Bruno! Enjoy Madonna and be happy!

Josh | 10/14/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Madonna and Aretha Franklin are the greatest female artists of all time. Even if you’re not a fan of Madonna’s music or pop music in general you must give her credit where credit is do. Madonna is unrivaled and the Queen of Pop. Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani and all the others don’t even come close to the original.

ringmybell | 10/14/2009, 4:50 pm EST

YAY Madonna! Great comments from all the supporters and especially those who know Madonna appreciates and celebrates fellow artists. But truly, what creative, thinking person wants 100-percent of the people to love her 100-percent of the time? I bet Madonna is pleased that some people dislike her…next time you’re in a crowded room, look around…do you really want everyone around to love you and approve of what you do? Madonna has never catered to EVERYONE…she is her own animal and makes no apologies. As far as her age goes, young people need to realize that they’re getting older too, and they’ll be judged soon enough themselves, especially if Americans don’t get over their hang-ups and stereotypes regarding age. A number should not qualify a person’s value. I have seen Madonna perfom up-close on the Sticky and Sweet Tour and I dare say a lot of the younger readers would be outta breath after one number…let alone two hours of singing with incredible breath control, while keeping up with 20-something dancers in rigorous routines. she is amazing…she’s a great example of what it means to follow your dreams, achieve success, maintain health and vitality, and to give back to the world. what’s wrong with that?

Black Hole Sun | 10/14/2009, 5:02 pm EST

RS, you make me sick. The people you’re only willing to put on your cover are either dead, appeal to the teenybopper crowd or have already been on the cover at least a dozen times before. Why can’t you give a great, yet little known (cough, Muse, cough) band the cover story for a change? Madonna didn’t even release a new album, she just released a greatest hits compilation! Which isn’t even the first!

Manel | 10/14/2009, 5:13 pm EST

In Europe we don´t care about ageism and that´s the reason why Madonna will be successful in every single country but the USA.
She´s still on the top of her game. Madonna the rest of the world still supports you so keep going girl!!

IMAGINE | 10/14/2009, 5:15 pm EST

JessAZ | 10/14/2009, 5:50 pm EST

LOVE HER!!!

D. Hinson | 10/14/2009, 6:19 pm EST

In my estimation, Madonna is a cultural landmark in our world’s history. And the catalog she’s amassed is stunning in its breadth–if you take the time to listen to the new Celebration set, it becomes apparent how daunting it is that one artist has had that many great songs. I’ve always been struck by her amazing acumen as a trendsetter and businessperson, but it’s truly the voice that she interjects into the music world around us that stuns me the most. Even with a very limited vocal range, she’s succeeded in helping to create the soundtrack for the last three decades. And, for everyone who thinks she hasn’t had any hits in years–look around the world at her chart success. People love listening to her, and there’s no denying that they love to see her perform as well. We should all be so lucky to have the ability to turn sheer will and determination into success–and leave such a lasting imprint in our creative endeavors.

Brava Madonna!!

Cynthia | 10/14/2009, 6:33 pm EST

Oh my God. How many times does this need to be said? Madonna has never had much in terms of looks or talent; what she DOES have is an insatiable, compulsive need to be in control, to attract attention, to SELL herself. That is her gift; that someone so average has had so long a career is truly astonishing. But then, she will do literally ANYTHING to stay in the spotlight. It’s sad and pathetic to see a botoxed, scrawny 51 year old woman behaving as though she’s a hot, 23 year old babe, posing for photos with her legs spread wide open.

Her fans are retards, as evidenced by some of the comments here: “Madonna rules the universe as our Empress of everything.” I can only imagine how much crystal meth the mother of THAT imbecile took during her pregnancy.

Jay from NYC | 10/14/2009, 6:41 pm EST

As a gay kid growing up in Texas, Madonna saved my life. She gave me hope and her ‘gay-friendly’ images made me feel like I was okay and not the sick individual that society made me out to be. And for that I thank her and all that she represents.

eva | 10/14/2009, 6:43 pm EST

she’s amazing

Jay from NYC | 10/14/2009, 6:45 pm EST

Just read the comments. And this is exactly why Madonna is a legend…she provokes undying devotion AND complete hate in people. Regardless, she is impossible to ignore. If you hate her…ask yourself why (and be really honest). In doing so, you may learn a little bit more about yourself.

dk | 10/14/2009, 7:23 pm EST

SHE IS THE END ALL…..AND SHE IS FABULOUS……….

AS FOR THE VEINY ARMS/OLD PICS…DO YOU SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT MEN OVER 50?? I DOUBT IT…WHAT SHOULD SHE BE A DRUG ADDICT MESS LIKE MJ??

me | 10/14/2009, 7:41 pm EST

the greatest pop artist in history.

wil | 10/14/2009, 7:46 pm EST

A despicable human being……

Observer | 10/14/2009, 8:03 pm EST

It’s interesting how the people that think she’s such a waste of space and so horrible still take the time time to comment and pay attention to everything she does.

meade | 10/14/2009, 8:23 pm EST

she cant carry a tune to save her life.greatest pop artist in history.you people are a joke

vvlavee | 10/14/2009, 8:35 pm EST

Ok–Both Madonna and her ex husband use the word ‘retarded’ as a common adjective. I haven’t heard anything like that since junior high school! Jesus.

Cory | 10/14/2009, 8:45 pm EST

Madonna is the sexiest women to ever live!!!! SMART!!

Andlfeel | 10/14/2009, 8:48 pm EST

Respect

Goose | 10/14/2009, 8:51 pm EST

Yes very smart, and yes very very sexy!! If you object just watch madonna performing Holiday live in 83 when shes on that tv show with all of them dancers behind her, I dont think its the band stand considering that was in 84. If you still object then i just dont know. lol

Cory | 10/14/2009, 8:53 pm EST

I agree, just watch her performing Holiday on that tv show in 83. WOW!!!!

Goose | 10/14/2009, 8:57 pm EST

Did you know that song Beautiful Stranger is talking about her selling her soul for fame.

Goose | 10/14/2009, 8:59 pm EST

?

slice | 10/14/2009, 9:02 pm EST

She was once vital, sexy and exciting, but face it. Madge has morphed into a big, veiny armed, weird faced plasticized bore, and her music is nothing special.

Furry | 10/14/2009, 9:09 pm EST

I do agree with the people, who said age doesn’t matter. We all get old. Just give credit to her what she is doing at her age. So many Americas are so fat by 50 they are already on disability. Still critical to other people, while sitting with fat ass in the car while they parking their car in a cripple spot at the age of 50. Keep going Madonna. Even though her last album Hard Candy is the worst of all her collection. It sucks. She is a legend. Let’s enjoy it and appreciate that even if you are not a fan.

ksing | 10/14/2009, 9:18 pm EST

I haven’t bought RS in 18 months, but I’m rushing out to get this copy. What a living legend! In 1983 she was my teen idol and I am still loving her in my 40’s.

ringmybell | 10/14/2009, 9:30 pm EST

great points by manel and IMAGINE…

SHE IS AMAZING. flawed and amazing.

Ronald | 10/14/2009, 9:31 pm EST

Madonna has become a better singer through the years. I appreciate all the good performances and songs she has given us. God bless her!

GusMart | 10/14/2009, 10:01 pm EST

I`ve reading the comments and i can accept that there are people who doesn´t like Madonna. I mean, C´mon. She has been in this bussiness for more than 25 years and she has been through really unpopular and controversial periods of time during her career so she really knows what a hater means. But Cmon people do you really need to go to her age or her veiny hands and stuff like that??. You are so obvious and so hypocrital, you are the kind of people who ran to buy Michael Jackson´s records after his death. I´m not only sad because he die but i´m also sad because i´m witnessing how United States society is doing the same with Madonna, you are treating Madonna like you treated Michael before his death. Does she needs to die for you to remind how great she is and how important is the fact that she´s still doing great music, great art ???. It doesn´t matter how old she is, is that a kind of a rule???. You need to be 20 to be succesfull??? WTF??. And by the way the whole world loves Madonna, her songs are hits in every country but US, her records are massive best sellers in everywhere but USA. So she cannot be played on the radios in US just because she´s 51??
No sense at all. Shame on you

ha | 10/14/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Why are people commenting on this being ANOTHER Madonna cover? She hasn’t been on the cover since 2006, I believe. I think its been too long! It’s not like she is on the cover every other month like Johnny Depp and Obama.

Bravo RS!!!

Jennbats82' | 10/14/2009, 10:36 pm EST

I look forward to reading about her sometimes retarded songs.I actually bought the new greatest hits and listening to it makes me think it’s greatness is on par with M.J’s legacy of songs,Madonna and Micheal are the best ever, and she keeps going and going,it’s amazing.they both make/made the most theatrical and catchy songs

Leave her alone | 10/14/2009, 10:52 pm EST

to see so many people spew hate makes me sad for them, their families, and their futures. you may think Madonna is talentless but someone please alert the hundreds of millions that bought her albums that you think that. she maybe boring but you take time to write about her. She may be ugly, but i don’t see any of you on magazine covers. the sad thing is that ALL of us age, so by telling her to step down you are giving society permission force your pathetic souls to step down when you are doing your thing. Truthfully I am saddened I have to even write this. I was doing my work, heard she was on the cover, love the Herb Ritts photography and am happy for her. I am happy that is a living legend who is still relevant and outsells what some of you call good music. so what if this is her 10000th cover for RS. The magazine is in business to make money, so they know from her history with them, that madonna sells. Whether she sells or not, relevant or irrelevant, veiny or smooth, let her do her thing. She does not call any of you what you call her. In fact she doesn’t even know you exist, that’s so sad for you guys. You spend all your energy spewing hate, but that energy travels and ultimately hurts you back. Does it affect Madonna? Well maybe, but after her success I think she’s found a way to combat your ugliness. Seriously guys, just watch your hate. there is no room for it in the universe. She adopts kids, she funds charities, she makes you question yourself, she’s over 50 and dances better than most, she gets better in the voice, she writes books, produces movies, raises kids, designs clothes, writes, directs, acts, you name it…she does it. She follows her own dreams, why don’t you do the same thing instead of hating on someone who is doing what you only wish you were doing.

Joel | 10/14/2009, 10:53 pm EST

What 51-year-old uses the word “retarded?” And twice in one response, no less.

Madonna, you should be ashamed of yourself. That word is as offensive as any derogatory term in the English language. Brutal.

Razor | 10/14/2009, 10:56 pm EST

I need to get this copy! Gooooooooooooo Madonna!

Gary Lewis [from Europe] | 10/14/2009, 11:18 pm EST

I don’t get why you american feel so offended by Madonna. Oh, I get it. It’s because she was the first woman to rub in your f*cking faces how hipocrits you american people are. You claim that she’s trash, but you support trashes like Chris Brown who spanked a woman. You say that she is an offense to your beliefs but you think racism is normal. You say that she is still there just because she has sold more than 200 million records and she is not talented. Well, “thank God” that you can feel very proud for having Britney Spears showing her p*ssy off or hanging around drunk with Paris Hilton in public events, or a former president like George Bush killing thousands of people as a justification for his incompetence, or even better, when you turn on the TV and you find those “educational programs” with rappers showing off their mansions full of b*tches and money. Wow, I would be very pround of being an american citizen with those qualities. Get a life and learn something. You have killed Michael Jackson because of your ignorance, turned his funeral into a circus to promote your “talented singers” and now you come here to say those s*hits about Madonna? Please, there are many people here who should simply shut up.

DICK T | 10/14/2009, 11:33 pm EST

Ilove madonna, she will always be the most important woman in pop history, fortunatelly she’s been wise enough to overcome decade by decade becoming the mayor star in the universe.
I cannot compare her to any other artist because everybody’s different and in the end i think it’s just an stupidity pretending to show her as the only one althoguh she’s unique for sure.
many records, many hits, a lot of number ones, many hair styles but most of all a woman full of life, nergy and talent.
Madonna, you’re the greatest artist as much as Elvis and the beatles, that’s something nobody can hide.

RockstaR | 10/14/2009, 11:42 pm EST

You haters make me sick. What do you want? We need to wait until she is dead- to realize what she’ve done to the music and entertaiment? Just what happened with MJ, First you hated him, and now you love him. Patetic.

I don’t like Madonna’s music. But I do understand that she is unique. I’ve seen her live, and I was speachless.

So, c’mon, there’s nothing wrong to accept that She is the best.

Thank you Madonna for keeping your promise and truley “ruling the world”. Without you the last 25 years would not have been the same! You truley brought artistry into music, video and photoghraphy…there will never be another who has done as much as you have for us!! Thank You!!

Thanks for this amazing cover! Madonna is a real icon! How great is this? Almoust 30 years of music and she still go on and on and on!

I think we should prepare for the release of Revolver, the Queen of Pop’s new single off Celebration.

Fabio | 10/15/2009, 12:47 am EST

Enjoy “this Madonna” while she’s still alive and working, because there won’t be another one like there won’t be another Elvis, Beatles and Michael Jackson.
Thank you God that let me live at the same time that artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson existed.

No one on Earth will ever achieve her level of provocation and intelligence: from her beginnings Madonna knew how to cross ‘tabous’ and public life, she burned boundaries and take off the limits in any communities assumptions without any violence or crisis.
I can understand conservatives who don’t know how to love her, but her open mind help evolution, and that’s the main point you shouldn’t forget ever.

Kimono | 10/15/2009, 3:55 am EST

This woman is a living legend and has survived and dominated the pop music industry for over 25 years people! Any intelligent human being clearly understands this cant be achieved on sex and provocation alone! Indisputably one of the most successful, talented, and intelligent recording artists of all time. Let’s just leave it at that.

sophia | 10/15/2009, 4:30 am EST

Congrats for a stunning stunning cover!! no better way to celebrate this extraordinary career.

Madonna Matt | 10/15/2009, 4:50 am EST

so incredinly amazing and beautiful and talented. she rocks and least she hasnt married the crack pipe lie whitney did. people dont realise that if there was no madonna there would be a lot less female singers and they would stnad there not moving. her and michael jacson changed the medium tghat is music video. will never be another lie her. 2 all the haters the new gh album sold 2 million copies in 2 weeks. she will rule forever

Mark | 10/15/2009, 4:59 am EST

Lots people love her and lots people hate her, but as a celebrity, if you are not talked about, what’s the point? Let’s face it, she’s a living legend, you American should be proud of her, not trashing her.

Littlebro34 | 10/15/2009, 5:54 am EST

I’ve seen a lot of comments on here that have referred to Madonna(M) as old and that she should no longer be making or playing music. With that being said why is it that the likes of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, & The Eagles to name a few do come back tours and the whole world goes crazy over the entire thing. Look, I get your point that she never retired but if you have a passion for something in life and enjoy what you do then you’re the luckiest person on the face of the earth. The paychecks and fame is a no brainer but to get excited about going to work all of the time is the ultimate dream come true and that’s what makes me jealous.

AlAl | 10/15/2009, 6:40 am EST

Thats the gist of this discussion basically. Heres a thought though – draw a parallel with michael jackson here – both of almost equal status in fame and hits, but this discussion is as long as the forums going around when michael died. Could you imagine if madonna died? same sort of hysteria, posthumous album sales – and not one remark about a ‘massive’ scandal like the child molestation

Anthony David Corvino | 10/15/2009, 7:04 am EST

Unreal. I am flawed by all of the negative comments. I can understand you may not like Madonna. But to go as far as to say she is talentless, old, ugly. People of the world. Here we are in 2009 and we still spill venom in a world were we should be focusing on helping and supporting one another as himan beings. This is why we go to war. Hatred, envy and betrayal. Wake up everyone. Yes we have freedom of speech but when do you use your morals before you speak? Grow up and share your talents and help someone today. Remember we all will have are own Judgement Day. Karma is a bitch!

RCt | 10/15/2009, 7:20 am EST

YOU JUST SAY EVERYTHING!!!
Madonna forget the USA, the rest of the WORLD LOVES YOU!!!

COMFORT INN | 10/15/2009, 7:44 am EST

Like her or not she knows how to do it, I’m not a big fan but from what I’ve read she seems like a decent smart lady and a caring mom, Living on A Prayer is a cool video, and she did all this long before American Idol, not always a fan of RS cover choices but she looks amazing on this one.

gooseboy | 10/15/2009, 8:12 am EST

Thank god for madonna, and all that she has brought to the world. thank you madonna for all that you have done for the gay community. thank you for doing whatever you wanted and not backing down and giving into the norm. i love you and wish u continued success. long live madonna.

Ashley | 10/15/2009, 9:41 am EST

She hardly ever mentions that she was born in Bay City, MI. Spent her summer there too with her grandparents. Apparently the city offered her the key to the city and she compltly ignored them. Didn’t even give them a response. Her mother is buried in Bay City in Calvery Cemetary.

David Tolleson | 10/15/2009, 10:01 am EST

As Executive Director of the National Down Syndrome Congress, I was disappointed to see Madonna use the word “retarded”, when she meant foolish. Individuals with developmental disabilities will continue to be marginalized as long as people — particularly celebrities — continue to treat them as less than human. Madonna should apologize.

jack | 10/15/2009, 10:08 am EST

I don’t understand why her age is such an issue in USA! What’s the matter? Is she the only person that gets old? Won’t Beyonce or Britney get old too? It seems that USA didn’t learn anything with Michael Jackson’s early death. Enjoy Madonna while she’s still working. The hole World is doing that but USA. Madonna is a legend.

trey | 10/15/2009, 10:14 am EST

Im from the UK where Madonna is as popular now as she always was!! Her career started here in 1983 with the release of Holiday which shot to number 5 on the hit top 40. Since then shes had 13 number 1 singles, 62 top ten hits and 3 top 40 hits, shes also had 11 number 1 albums and sold out more concerts and played to more fans here than any other female act. We love her, sure the press gives her a hard time but like us, the British, she’s not afraid to be different or say what she wants! We are no where near as offended as Americans when it comes to her sexual provocation or taboo breaking topics, we need her! Shes a refreshing change from do-gooder acts like Kylie and Lady GaGa who do stuff just because its cool, Madonna does things because she has something to say. God save the Queen i say, and may she never hang up her dancing heels!

ben | 10/15/2009, 10:21 am EST

The world is an ageist and sexist place. Madonna should be celebrated, shes done more for women, homosexuals and black people than any polotician or revolutionary combined. Shes never buckled under pressure either when the world has turned on her, shes as tough as steel! When did she ever check into rehab? rely on massive sedation to sleep or pain killers? when did she ever sell her real soul to the media like Britney? shave her head in a public meltdown or be involved in child abuse scandals?? Wake up America and stop hating! Embrace your daughter!!! She reflects everything her mother nation has taught her, she is unique!

ok…it doesnt matter who you are or what walk of life you come from, MADONNA has inspired you with either song, dance, film or with her image. She is the ultimate “American Dream”. Starting from the bottom anc rising above all others performers and artists. MADONNA made it on her own and she is such a inspiration to us all! She even did it without stageparents, being a mickey mouse club member or a lead singer of a rockband or girlgroup first! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!

zz44 | 10/15/2009, 12:47 pm EST

Madonna can’t sing…but she’s a genius at marketing herself.

jeff | 10/15/2009, 1:23 pm EST

25 yrs ago when she first came on the scene; never in a million years would i have guessed or predicted she would still be a force to be reckoned with in the music industry 25 years later….. just for that she is a legend

Pete | 10/15/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Are people still seriously saying she can’t sing? Have you listened to the Ray of Light album? Seen her live? She doesn’t have a technically great voice but neither do Diana Ross, David Bowie, Bono, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and countless others. Madonna CAN SANG and sing quite well. She’s drastically improved since the 80’s and that can’t really be said about any other female artist. What other female is a better vocalist in her 40’s or 50’s then she was in her 20’s….NONE.

jhaley | 10/15/2009, 2:18 pm EST

I love Madonna. But please stop using the “r” word. It is so offensive and I know Madonna stands up for less fortunate people.

Sally | 10/15/2009, 2:21 pm EST

I love that this woman can still get so many people riled up. I never understood why. But you see some of that clever approach right here. She gave backhand compliments that make her look superficially kind, but she is still in the game to win. Her comments about Lady Blah Blah making mistakes….er, but she has an “it” factor, and her comparison of Justin Timberlake to a certain actor could give certain people suspicions now.

No one is the be all and end all of everything, especially a girl who had a very nice background in Rochester Hills (she was only born in Bay City, her dad was an engineer) and thought she actually could control everything in the world one day. I guess maybe that is why people care so much about her? She was a unique woman, not someone I would trust, but unique. She does make the current music “pop tarts” look pretty sad.
She has something none of them do: staying power. This is hard to argue against. Jeff, I agree totally.

basser | 10/15/2009, 3:36 pm EST

I, too, am tired of Rolling Stone bowing down to the pop stars and their crowds. Madonna? For real? Yes, she’s a marketing genius and has contributed to pop music, but that’s it. It’s pop. It ain’t rock and roll, no matter how many times Rolling Stone and other magazines run old photos of Madonna playing an electric guitar on the stage. This magazine should be paying more attention to bands like Radiohead, Wilco, Muse, Transatlantic … bands that are much more rock and roll than Madonna.

basser | 10/15/2009, 3:45 pm EST

… and does anyone else find it ironic that a supposed rock and roll magazine sticks its snobby, red nose up in the air at bands like Rush, Yes and even Kiss, yet falls adoringly at the feet of popsters like Madonna, Adam Lambert and Jonas Brothers?
That comment above some said to the effect “think really why you hate Madonna and you’ll learn more about yourslef.” Ah, no. Not everyone loves or likes Madonna. No one pulls that crap when it comes to Pink Floyd or The Who. There are some people who don’t like The Who, Floyd, etc., and there are those who do. There’s no such thing as everyone in the entire world loves Madonna and every other artist on the planet, but they just publicly deny it. That theory is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. :)

Zack | 10/15/2009, 3:57 pm EST

Brad | 10/15/2009, 5:20 pm EST

Go, Madonna! Keep on doing what you’re doing – the conversation here indicates she’s still relevant and still doing something right. And honestly, her last few albums have been just as strong as the ones she put out in the 80’s (with the possible exception of her all-time masterpiece, Like a Prayer). She certainly hasn’t lost her ability to craft a remarkably catchy pop tune.

steve | 10/15/2009, 7:41 pm EST

There is no other artist male or female or group that is still here, still successful other than Madonna, she has massive success everywhere except America, who is so obsesses with age, they are the retarded ones. There is and will only ever be one Madonna, she is unrivalled and the fact 25 years later her last tour is the highest grossing concert tour by a solo artist says it all. Madonna we love you

Jason E | 10/15/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Love the cover and can’t wait to go get the issue tomorrow! For everyone hating on Madonna – just remember this: Whomever your favorite artist is right now, know that they ALL (I repeat, ALL) respect and admire her and hope to be just like her. They want her fans, her success, her longevity, her industry respect, her influence…you get the picture.

This is a reply to GOOSE:
Ummmmm, no offense, but where did u hear that “Beautiful Stranger” is about fame? Or is that your interpretation? Most “M” fans will agree that it’s a club song, a club video, and a club ‘vibe’. The groove and mindset make ya wanna just meet the “Beautiful Sranger” and ‘let go’. On the floor or in a corner, w/your heart ‘dancin’ all over the place’, bet it all and go for broke! “Pay for you in tears..’, oh well, twas real good while it lasted. Madonna rocks!

The first print magazine I’ll be buying in years. This is a fabulous cover story. Keep it coming Rolling Stone!
I love Madonna’s comments about her most “retarded” songs—ahaha. Hearing an artist degrade their own work is always interesting.

Najmi | 10/16/2009, 3:53 am EST

Whatever people say, there’s only one Madonna. Nobody can ever change that! NOBODY!

Zun Kian | 10/16/2009, 4:10 am EST

The people telling Madonna “she’s old, she’s a hag, she’s got veiny arms, etc….”, just what if when they grow old too and a young kid also tells them “I don’t like you, stay away from me, you’re old, you’re a creep, you should belong to the grave” How would you feel?????
And hey, your Beyonces, Rihannas, Mariah’s will become 50 or 60 someday and some young and upcoming singer the future young generation will adore and they also tell you that your “queen” is old and should not be doing what they’re doing best. Of course you’ll defend and stand beside your favourite artist no matter what they say.
I just want to say STOP the age issue. Focus on what the artist had contributed, good or bad, it is what she offered to the world and you have no right to judge what a person should do or not because each one of us is unique in their own ways. In the meantime, while this artist is still around giving that joy and entertainment we need when we are down or troubled, life is short, Let us just CELEBRATE life while we can!!!!

Andy P. | 10/16/2009, 4:36 am EST

Retarded America Hates Madonna! That’s just one country out of 195 countries in the world!! Well, maybe count the ultra-backward middle east and taliban infested afghanistan and the sickly north korea. There’s still roughly 190 countries in the world who LOVES Madonna!!!
Way to go my Queen!!!!

JRW | 10/16/2009, 8:36 am EST

Madonna says she couldn’t do a (straight) show like McCartney does because she would be bored; where she actually had to stand in front of an audience and just sing? Of course you couldn’t Madonna. Sweetie, it would be the audience that would be bored. That’s your worst fear. You haven’t the talent to actually sing a song; much less write a good one. You need tons of choreography and scantily clad guys and girls hovering around you creating the illusion that you have talent and are “performing”; much like Cher does. It’s all image. You’re fooling yourself.

Mark Jeffery Koch | 10/16/2009, 8:41 am EST

Madonna has never been more than a marketing expert. She cannot sing and her songs are not memorable years after they were released. We recently had the excitement of the Beatles remastered releases. Would any sane person spend $300 for Madonna remasters? Please!

When you look back at the giants of the last forty years you have The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepellin, Bruce Springsteen and others but Madonna does not merit comparison with them. She was an expert at marketing herself and selling sex but no one spends hours delighting in listening to her songs even five years after they were first released. She has always been nothing more than marketing hype. Oh yea, she can dance and puts on a nice show, but a singer, composer, arranger, musician? NO. All Hype. Pure and simple. Or, as they say in Texas, all hat and no cattle.

DD | 10/16/2009, 10:02 am EST

What’s with the anti-American sentiments just because Madonna’s doesn’t sell well anymore here compared to other countries? Her Sticky and Sweet tour sold out all dates in the US–Americans still want to see her. The music climate has drastically changed over the last 15 years, and Madonna’s music doesn’t fit in with what’s popular on the radio these days. That ISN’T a bad thing. She still makes records on her own merits, rather than cater to American tastes. As a music fan myself, I couldn’t tell you what’s in the top ten in the US charts; I stopped paying attention years ago, but that doesn’t stop me from seeking out great music.

To the guy who said we hate her because she exposed us as hypocrites: Did she really? Or has she exposed herself as one. Don’t get me wrong–I like Madonna as much as the next gay man–but perhaps Americans “don’t like” her anymore, because they starting seeing through the hype and the calculated controversies. Sure she’s a great entertainer, but there are far more talented entertainers than her that don’t get the recognition she does. She still has a substantial fan base here, though, so you can stop the vitriol. And stop acting like your European pop stars and celebrity figures are perfect.

KS | 10/16/2009, 11:42 am EST

Since when is the use of the word “retarded” a no-no? It is a legitimate word in the English language and certainly does not warrant to be self-censored with euphemisms like “the r-word”.

blake | 10/16/2009, 1:20 pm EST

i agree with jay from nyc on what he said. People are wasting there time trying to defend her against all the negative people; who are also wasting there time saying nasty things about her. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE THEN,NO ONE ASKED YOU TO READ THIS.you can’t deny that she helped shape popular music whether u hate her or not.But like someone said earlier, she doesn’t need america to love her she got plenty of fans in other countries.and i appreciate what she stands, even if others don’t.we just need to stop being so nasty to her love u madge!!

Alberto | 10/16/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Madonna ROCKS!! I’m a straight guy who thinks she has written some great songs. Madonna may not be to your liking but you can’t take away her amazing achievements.

Kim | 10/16/2009, 2:15 pm EST

RE: Mark Jeffery Koch
are you serious? Vocally Madonna is better then Lennon, McCartney, Springsteen, Jagger Bono and tons of other male stars. She CAN sing. Why is it that women who can’t sing like Aretha or Whitney Houston apparently can’t sing, yet men that don’t sound like Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye are legends. The age thing has to stop, it’s pure bs. the people that hate on her are usually teeny boppers that have no idea of how she influenced every female artist or Mariah Carey fans that still think there is so apparent rivalry. Madonna is a legend, her accomplishments are unmatched by any female artists (and VERY few males). In 100 years people will stop talk about Madonna when they discuss pop culture, the same can’t be said about very many other people.

Mark | 10/16/2009, 2:26 pm EST

weegie I’ll never understand why people like you who don’t like Madonna take the time to comment on her.

Just on observation of people that hate on Madonna:
1) Straight males that only like male rock and rap artists. Standing in front of burning crosses, getting excommunicated by the Catholic church, writting songs about abuse, sexuality, abortion and death are pretty rock & roll.
2) Females who are jealous that Madge is still hot at 51 and probably looks better then they do at 25
3) Females under 23 that have no idea that the Britney’s, GaGa and Beyonces of the world owe they entire careers to Madge since she layed the foundation for being a female pop star
4) gay males that love other divas and rip on Madonna b/c they’re jealous she’s the most famous, most successful and most most influential female artist in history.

Rabbitbunny | 10/16/2009, 3:04 pm EST

The Music speaks for itself! After reading the article I must say that Lady Madge just might be the best artist/singer/writer/musician ever in rock & roll! While Paul McCartney is intent on trashing and ruining the Beatles’ legacy, Madonna started a chapter in rock that is hers and hers alone! America still loves her because she made it from nothing and made something out of that American Dream. Some of the song that are “failures” like American Life and Deeper and Deeper are fascinating because she cried when she wrote them. And the title cut to Bed time Stories is a full-frontal attack. AGAINST THOSE WHO’LL NEVER UNDERSTAN THE LADY!
-”I’m traveling into the arms of unconsciousness/And inside/We’re all still wet/Longing and yearning
-How can I explain how I feel?
-And all that you’ve ever learned
-Try to forget/I’ll never explain again!” Madonna is unrepentant and let’s all let her stay that way because she is rock & roll personified! SHE DIDN’T GET ENSHRINED IN CLEVELAND FOR NOTHING, NOW DID SHE? And the ballads Crazy for You, Who’s That Girl?, Live to Tell, Take a Bow, Frozen Don’t Tell Me and Miles Away are beautiful love songs that obviously come from her beautiful heart. Finally aren’t Open Your Heart, Cherish and Hung Up THE MOST EXQUISITELY SAD DANCE BALLADS
IN EXISTENCE? Not to mention the beauty of You Must Love Me, Another Suitcase in Another Hall and Don’t Cry for Me from the Evita soundtrack?Lady Madonna rocks hard with that Michigan Smile
-Detroit favorite daughter
-Lady Madonna Ciccone is a beautiful American! America will always love her! She is brilliant!

Anonymous | 10/16/2009, 3:27 pm EST

It’s not even worth arguing that Madonna is and will always be Legendary! I Love Madonna always.

RandyE | 10/16/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Madonna can be the Queen of Pop if she wants. I have an ego the size of the moon myself, but if I were to select a Queen for my throne, I can find a lot more capable women for the role.

I have my music appreciation which includes several other female music artists, and I rate their skill and art far higher.

But hey, Rock On Madonna, like Rolling Stone, keeping the music culture alive.

think: | 10/16/2009, 4:51 pm EST

love.

RandyE | 10/16/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Also, I agree with David Tolleson’s comment regarding the use of ‘retarded’ –foolish being more socially responsible. With big ego comes big responsibility, honey. Get with the role or get off the throne.

Sean | 10/16/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Are we really going to dog Madonna for a poor choice of words? Have you listened to most rap songs? Are Kanye West, Britney Spears and all the others exactly shinning examples of great people. They’re pop stars and unlike the rest Madonna usually sounds extremely articulate and educated in interviews. And in the dictionary the word is defined as such, no necessarily referring to a particular group of people:
-a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance
- Slang: stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way:

” And the title cut to Bed time Stories is a full-frontal attack. AGAINST THOSE WHO’LL NEVER UNDERSTAN THE LADY!
-”I’m traveling into the arms of unconsciousness/And inside/We’re all still wet/Longing and yearning
-How can I explain how I feel?
-And all that you’ve ever learned
-Try to forget/I’ll never explain again!” Madonna ”

Great song…except it was written by Bjork.

WOW it cracks me up to read all the comments! Why do people here in the USA have to be soooo NEGATIVE about everything! If you don’t have anything good to say then you should shut up! That’s why she left the USA awhile ago. Look at Michael Jackson:americans can make you a God and put you on a pedestal one day then shred you to pieces and drag you to the ground the next day!I bet most of the people writting shit about Madonna on here know exactly shit about her.

cdf | 10/16/2009, 11:31 pm EST

any good that ms.M. does is just self-serving!!! she has a lust for power and money is her god!!!

she’s a very manipulative woman!

that’s how she got where she is today!

Vikta Kaneka | 10/17/2009, 4:35 am EST

i never buy rolling stone, but i will be heading out to buy this one. i love the photo choice for the cover. madonna is awesome. i love it!

mplsbill | 10/17/2009, 11:50 am EST

What do you people expect? When your a musician and you get older should you stop being seen in public? The woman is still beautiful, her voice is in top form, her dancing still rocks, and like most human beings and animals, she’s aging, so what! We collect antique things, should we throw away people who are treasures when they age? Then when the pressure builds from these types of comments, and the artist gets plastic surgery to look younger again she gets slammed for that as well! Cher is the only woman on the planet in her age group who seems to look as if she’s not aging, I really hope we don’t find out that she like MJ was really a bag of bones and bald under the costume to keep fans happy. You people all need to get over yourselves, if you don’t like the way she looks, close your eyes and just listen!

Mr Goldskin | 10/17/2009, 1:01 pm EST

debd | 10/18/2009, 4:09 pm EST

She isnt the first or the best at anything. Tina Turner paved the way so twits like Madonna could enter the game. Tina Turner at 70 is still hotter than Madonna could ever be. I think of Madonna as the dark Marlin Monroe who thinks she’s a great singer. BORING

Anonymous | 10/18/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Madonna is ANYTHING but boring….oh god…that made me laugh! Tina Turner is fantastic, to be sure, and her accomplisments are many, but that in no way diminishes Madonna’s contributions to music and world culture. I grew up when she was “PAVING” that way and i can tell you from experience…a lot of things that weren’t talked about BEFORE Madonna were finally brought to the surface because of her and her insistence to fearlessly ask questions and boldly give her opinion, even when it was very unpopular to do so (TAKE THAT…THOSE OF YOU WHO SAY SHE SHAMELESSLY SELF-PROMOTES!) as a result, women especially are freer to be who they want without apology; date who they want…make what they want…own what they want. Tina Turner was brave to leave an abusive relationship, but really…is that so “groundbreaking?” Madonna made it possible for women at a young age to see their own power and recognize their innate ability to be happy and fulfilled. Look at the strength Madonna has as a woman. Shouldn’t that inspire you just as Tina does? I am sure Tina herself is inspired by Madonna. Fearless women (and men) usually are.

Dax | 10/18/2009, 8:29 pm EST

To the person above: Are you serious? Women are able to do what they want and date whom they want because of Madonna? I don’t know what vacuum you grew up in, but I also remember a time before Madonna, and people were not living in the dark ages before she arrived on the scene. Madonna didn’t “make” people talk about sex, question authority, explore gender boundaries, and all those other things of which she’s falsely credited as doing; people were doing that long before she came on the scene. Perhaps you misread the person’s post to which you were commenting–Tina has done a lot more than just leave her husband. People like Tina, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Joan Jett, Heart, Chrissie Hynde, Joni Mitchell, Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar, Dolly Parton, Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, Siouxsie Sioux, Cher, Kate Bush, The Slits, Patti Smith, Wendy O. Williams, among others, have knocked down barriers, challenged stereotypes, recreated the role of women in music, and paved the way for a lot of women in rock. Madonna just took what they’ve done already and ran with it. It’s because she became such a huge celebrity and tabloid figure, everything she did became news, unlike others before her who fought for equality in the music industry without a whole lot of fanfare or public acknowledgment. She had the advantage of a new forum at the time, MTV, to bring her message to a new generation whom all of a sudden seemed to just have forgotten music history before 1984. Erotic imagery in videos–already done before she started doing it. Sexually provocative lyrics–done before. Stimulating sex on stage–done before. Gender bending–done before. Global icon–done before. Outspokenness–done before.

I’m not trying to diminish Madonna’s accomplishments. I think some of the stuff she has done is great. She was one of the first artists (notice I said “one of the first”) to address the AIDS crisis when a lot of artists wouldn’t even talk about it. She’s one of the first gay icons to actually address and acknowledge her gay fan base. She took the concept of women empowerment and took it to another level and said you can be sexy and in control. Maybe there are some people from that generation who were inspired and became stronger people. But let’s not act like she’s the first to do it. And if you look at the current state of music and affairs today regarding sexism, sexism, homophobia, etc., there’s still a lot that has to be accomplished–not a whole lot has changed.

Matt | 10/18/2009, 11:46 pm EST

Simply an icon! Long live the Queen!

TT | 10/19/2009, 2:32 am EST

“Tina Turner was brave to leave an abusive relationship, but really…is that so “groundbreaking?”

After nearly half a century of electrifying audiences, the best you can come up with about Tina Turner is that she left her husband?? Perhaps it wasn’t groundbreaking because it wasn’t meant to be. It was a personal choice she made. You seem to forget Madonna also left an abusive relationship with Sean Penn. She even wrote a song about it (Til Death Do Us Part). I guess it’s only groundbreaking when Madonna does it.

Give some credit where credit is due. Not only has she inspired African-American women, she showed that they can rock as well. She also showed women can be sexy and rock in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and now 70s long before everying started gushing how apparently Madonna looks great for 51.

Meghan | 10/19/2009, 8:31 am EST

Madonna is the Queen of Pop. She broke down barriers and helped make things acceptable and mainstream. She might not have been the 1st to do a lot of things but she got attention when she did it and thats why she’s so important.

Tiffani | 10/19/2009, 8:34 am EST

Madonna is a true living legend. Yes her body is athletic , she’s been on tour for the last two years. Give the woman props for having the vitality and energy of women/atletes half her age. I am 30 years old and Madonna inspires me to not just give up and lay down and die when i get older, but keep fit, take care of myself and feel relevent and sexy. Society wants women who age to feel prehistoric and not sexy. I say you go Madonna! You are looking better than and in better shape than 99% of the women your age. Refuse to give in to the sexist, ageist demands of our society. I will buy this Rolling Stone issue.

JustWondering | 10/19/2009, 9:21 am EST

How come Madonna can’t keep her stories straight? I know I have read that she tried drugs and drinking before. She ran with the Studio 54 crowd, so why say she did not have a drink until 30? This reminds me of how to spun that tale of coming to New York when she was 17 with nothing. The truth was she was 20 and had daddy help her. Madonna loves to spin tall tales.

Miguel in NY | 10/19/2009, 1:09 pm EST

Like her or not, you can’t deny that Madonna has influenced pop music and pop culture in a way that no one else has. Her music, videos and concerts are a testament to hard work ethic and aiming to please. Even if you aren’t a big fan, her tours will make you get off your feet and dance. She is the undisputed Queen of Pop.

Josh | 10/19/2009, 2:34 pm EST

Madonna is unrivaled and untouchable. Her achievements are nothing short of remarkeable. I commend her for taking risks, stepping out of the box and speaking her mind. Her music has been fantastic for nearly 30 years and she’s still going strong. She’s a pop culture icon and the true Queen.

julesypoo | 10/19/2009, 3:09 pm EST

I don’t really like Madonna BUT she’s got a new edge to her, in my book, for not only reinventing her looks but her stories…she’s obviously insane.

stardust | 10/19/2009, 3:21 pm EST

I’ve always admired Madonna’s courage, even when I might have disagreed with her. During the reactionary 1980s, she was one of the few who took on the sanctimonious “moral majority” and the Reagan zeitgeist. Regardless of their attacks, she never backed down for a minute!

Also, she’s never claimed to be the best singer or dancer. She has, however, carved out a style all her own based on fusing song with image. One could say she brought performance art to the genre of Pop — at least to a level never done before. For this she is a living icon. Elvis, Sinatra, the Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, Micheal Jackson, and Madonna — all icons of the twentieth century — all utterly unique and inimitable.

She composes most, if not all of her songs, and has always had an ear for danceable tunes. To this day, she remains a best selling artist. Oh yeah, and Madonna has no major scandals nipping at her heals, has raised a beautiful family, and has a zest for life and creativity that gets stronger by the decade.

tish | 10/19/2009, 3:23 pm EST

[sorry about the double post, etc!]

Whitney | 10/19/2009, 3:57 pm EST

The greatest female pop artist of all time and the greatest pop artist. Nobody will ever come close to Madonna. I love Michael Jackson but Madonna has had more great singles then any other pop artist. And while MJ’s career/music got sidelined in the early 90’s Madonna has been making great music her entire career. I bow down to her Madgesty!

OSCAR | 10/19/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Dear “macb” and “ahem (overthe hill)”, Thanks for your opinions, neither of you know what F you’re talking about!!!!!!!

Madonna Per siempre!
Madonna forever!

Madonna You are and forever will be the Queen!!!! LOVE U FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

Marco | 10/19/2009, 11:57 pm EST

The only bullshit you read about Madonna stems from people’s jealousy. It’s so sad for them really.

Because really — in the grand scheme of it all — EVERYONE wants and strives for what she Is and has accomplished.

Only the people with merit in this world will ever get this without affectation attached…..and for that reason alone….is why Madonna’s fan base remains to the sexy, fun and hip people of this world.

The rest of you haters — too bad for you.

Madonna lovers – rejoice. The kingdom is ours!!!

Mike | 10/20/2009, 8:52 am EST

I love that 30 years later the women can still get under peoples skin. No other living performer has that power. Keep rocking Your Madgesty!

MadLove | 10/20/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Madonna is a Queen. None of her followers compare. At 51 she’s still the greatest entertainer in the world.

Daniel | 10/20/2009, 2:37 pm EST

MADONNA IS NOT THE QUEEN OF POP… She abandoned POP years ago.
Madonna is just a circus act , shes an entertainer , when it comes to singing she lacks talent.

But she knows how to appear almost nude just for the attention.
Madonna is just an icon for america. she’s trash for the rest of the world.

Honestly i cant stand to see a old hag , wearing gym clothes to appear young , and arms with man-veins all over… she looks sick and unhealthy.

Kimmy | 10/20/2009, 2:42 pm EST

Madonna is Scary , No class , No Voice ,No talent.

Once there are gays and desperate men, Madonna will have an audience.

No wonder she refuses to sing her old songs…. SHE CAN’T.

Im so happy her marriage failed, She is too vain to be with a guy that nice.

CJ | 10/20/2009, 5:40 pm EST

Kimmy and Daniel, damn you guys have a lot of hatred. Just b/c Madonna is the most successful female artist of all time? Because she can do things in her 50’s that people half her age can’t accomplish? Because she has made some of the greatest songs of all time, or still puts on the best shows? Madonna can’t sing?…..That’s beyond ridiculous. Have you listen to her sing especially when she’s not dancing, she actually has a pretty impressive voice now. And to wish for her marriage to fail is sick. You guys sound like psycho Mariah Carey fans.

Beth | 10/21/2009, 11:09 am EST

Love M, she’ll always be the Queen. The haters have been trying to bring her down for the last 3 decades and that’ll never change the fact she’s an icon.

M505 | 10/21/2009, 1:01 pm EST

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!

Meghan | 10/24/2009, 8:19 pm EST

Say what you want about Madonna but she’s never been in the tabloids for being a drunk, drug addict, in rehab. She’s a good mother, and has managed a career in a fickle industry that has lasted 27 years and is still one of the top earning acts of our time. So I say KUDOS to the Queen Of Pop.

Michael | 10/25/2009, 11:05 pm EST

She stands alone as the greatest female pop icon. Long live the Queen of Pop!

BO'Connor | 10/26/2009, 1:31 am EST

I have never been a fan of Madonna’s music. I’m sure some people like it and it’s their choice. But I will always idolize Madonna for embracing gay culture. I don’t know how many of you grew up in teh 1980s. It was a very homophobic era. Many gay teenagers committed suicide because they had nobody to embrace them. Then came Madonna. She was the biggest star in the world. By the early 1990s, she embraced gay culture and gay people in her videos, movies, etc. This was at a time when stars were told not to embrace gay people cause it would ruin their careers. Madonna made it “okay” to be gay. I owe my life to this woman. If she hadn’t pushed gay rights the way she did, many of us wouldn’t be alive today.

Robbie | 10/27/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Time Magazine once said it best, the woman is a secular goddess, she’s reached a level of stardom that possibly only Elvis, Monroe, MJ and the Beatles attained. She’s a true legend and the Queen of Pop. Music wouldn’t be the same w/o her.

Danny- London | 10/28/2009, 9:49 am EST

Madonna What else can you say about the woman that hasnt already been said. The woman is a complete living legend her music has changed the world, her attitude has opened the door for so many females, Her dress sence has inspired fashion houses all over the world. I couldn’t imagine the world without Madonna. She continues to push all the boundries and set the bar to all other imerging wannabe pop stars.I only wished she would get the credit she deserves now while she is alive rather than waiting for a tragedy for the world to appreicate her. I love you Madonna and couldnt imagine my life with out you init. Music would never be the same with out you ur no1 fan XXX

RUSSIA | 11/6/2009, 1:15 am EST

Russia really loves U!
Long Live the Queen!

PhillDoc | 11/9/2009, 11:52 am EST

Nice article you got here. It would be great to read more concerning this matter.

acupunk | 11/12/2009, 3:47 pm EST

madonna’s comment on retards is not about the intellectually handicapped but about those people in full control of their faculty but choose to handicap themselves just like you readers who choose to miss the point. her comment on dylan is a bit off though. his voice changes are based on calculated expectations-not on cigarettes-she oughta know that.
