Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson and Eminem received the most nominations for the 2009 American Music Awards, which will air live from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on November 22nd. Swift leads the field with six nominations, followed by Jackson with five and Eminem with four. All three artists, plus Kings of Leon and Lady Gaga, were nominated for the coveted Artist of the Year award. So far, Alicia Keys, the Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez and Adam Lambert have been named as performers at the ceremony, with Lambert reportedly set to unveil a new song from his upcoming post-Idol debut album.

Lambert, along with former American Idol judge Paula Abdul and Snoop Dogg, were on hand this morning to announce the nominees. According to a press release, the nominees “were selected from data supplied by the Nielsen Company’s Broadcast Data Systems, which monitors radio airplay performance, and SoundScan, which tracks retail music sales.” This pretty much explains why Michael Jackson and his Number Ones are included on the nominees list: Even though the greatest-hits compilation was originally released in 2003, it’s sold almost two million copies since the King of Pop’s death on June 25th, making Jackson’s eligible for a posthumous Artist of the Year award.

Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Kings of Leon and T.I. all locked up three nominations apiece. Fan voting will determine the winners (as it has for the past three years), so head over to the ABC Website to cast your vote. (Last year’s big winner was Chris Brown.) No Britney?

Her album and singles have sold brilliantly this year. Whatevs.

Carol | 10/13/2009, 8:59 pm EST

I’m sorry michael had to die for you and the world to remember what a genius he was! He should’ve been nominated in 2003, when “Number Ones” was released, instead he was falsely accused and arrested on that very same day!!! Shame on you world for stepping on him when he was down and now praising him when he’s gone.

I’m proud of you Michael, always have been, always will be – I miss you!

blondy | 10/13/2009, 9:02 pm EST

am so happy with mj’s nomination
greatest entertainer that ever lived

Iva | 10/13/2009, 9:05 pm EST

Well, the AMA is based on sales, people..so obviously he gets nominated..and surely deserves to win considering the numbers..

EW | 10/13/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Ugh…we are all clearly ripping off the right artists’ CDs and paying for the wrong ones.

Except for MJ. Greatest metaphor for pop music, ever. Best in the 80s, now dead.

Cathy | 10/13/2009, 11:16 pm EST

Carol — you said it. Michael was a musical genius. Too often condemned unfairly and not recognized (in recent years)for his singing talent. Michael had more pure talent in his little finger than most current artists today have in their whole bodies. Long live Michael Jackson — a man who could truly sing! Long live the KING. He deserves every bit of recognition he gets out of the music industry. Even if it does come after his death.

Derrick Williams | 10/13/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Michael Jackson should get it

Donna | 10/13/2009, 11:45 pm EST

Of course Michael Jackson. He was and still will ALWAYS be KING. He deserves ALL of the awards. He is the BEST. He puts the others to shame.

bima | 10/14/2009, 12:10 am EST

i too want mj to win all these awards

moonsruface | 10/14/2009, 12:49 am EST

Ad | 10/14/2009, 1:05 am EST

Vote for the one and only MJ!

AlAl | 10/14/2009, 1:13 am EST

how funny would it be if some jackass interrupted Taylor Swift again

* | 10/14/2009, 1:15 am EST

The AMA’s are such a joke!
With the way music is currently selling, platinum and gold sales plaques should be enough of an award for the artists who are lucky enough to achieve them.

America has terrible taste in music.
At a time when album sales have never been worse look at the trash america is actually buying:
Shinedown, Nickelback (need I say more?), Hannah Montana soundtracks, multiple copies of the same Taylor Swift album, Daughtry, Black Eyed Peas, etc.

ray | 10/14/2009, 1:26 am EST

MICHAEL JACKSON ALL THE WAY VOTE GUYS DONT SIT THERE AND THINK HE WILL WIN!! VOTE PLEASE FROM AUSTRALIA X

Billie Jean | 10/14/2009, 1:50 am EST

luvsADAM | 10/14/2009, 2:29 am EST

Adam Lambert is going to dominate next year’s nomination for sure!

Roberta | 10/14/2009, 3:06 am EST

I really want MJ to win them all!
He was a true genious of music! MJ RIP

Jason | 10/14/2009, 6:35 am EST

MICHAEL JACKSON! WHO ELSE? LONG LIVE THE KING! DONT FORGET TO VOTE EVERYONE!

Americans | 10/14/2009, 7:06 am EST

it SHOULD go to TAYLOR SWIFT….!

Anonymous | 10/14/2009, 9:16 am EST

Slim Shady

Sid | 10/14/2009, 10:22 am EST

Michael sold 2.3 mill. records in US alone and 9 mill. records worldwide since his death. And its still counting. Once “This Is It” releases, it will become even more higher. So I feel it’s going to be a clean sweep for Michael this year at the AMAs. No doubt about it. Long live the King’s legacy.

Muni | 10/14/2009, 11:07 am EST

Eminem for sure!!!!!!

JamPilot | 10/14/2009, 11:21 am EST

EMINEM and KINGS OF LEON should be big winners!! Best rapper and rock band of the 2000s

Nat | 10/14/2009, 11:40 am EST

King of Pop, is def GONNA DOMINATE this award show. And if he does not win, this shows how BOGUS these award shows are! Based on sales MJ IS KILLIN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!rip MJ

Phil Spector | 10/14/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Great..just what Michael Jackson needs..more awards!

Weffie | 10/14/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Actually MJ has sold 5 million albums since Jan 25. Number Ones represent 1.9 million, the rest are his other albums. He deserves the nominations, and I am looking forward to the shows. I do think Eminem is extremely talented, too bad his lyrics are so raunchy – I can’t enjoy listening to them.

Cookfan | 10/14/2009, 2:20 pm EST

Are you serious? No David Cook? Cook has sold over a million albums and has had platinum singles.

Michael | 10/14/2009, 2:48 pm EST

I feel sorry for Whitney Houston. As a diehard fan, even though her singles have gone nowhere, her I Look To You album is one of the top selling female albums of 2009 and should have garnered at least one nomination, especially given Rolling Stone’s generally favorable review. That means all she can do is hope to be merely invited to sit in the audience and watch. Watch out, her tour next year has the potential to be HUGE, proving that live performance matters over selling records in today’s music industry!

Mel | 10/14/2009, 2:51 pm EST

I agree with everyone here. Michael Jackson all the way!!!!! I’m going to cast my vote as soon as I’m done here. And I couldn’t agree more with * (star) the trash that people buy, UGH!!! EVERY person nominated (other than MJ) SUCKS. I’m not even watching it when it airs, I’ll just wait until the next day and read about who won.

JP | 10/14/2009, 5:47 pm EST

I was going to say that if Michael Jackson win for a greatest hits album that was relesed 6 years, then that will put the final nail in the coffin of mainstream music. However, looking at the nominees in the categories. Mainstream music is FUCKING DEAD! You have to be kidding to nominate 2 “Hannah Montana” soundracks in the Best Soundtrack Category. I could go down the list, but it’s obvious to anyone who honestly love music. This is a very sad reflection about the state of music.

OK, fanboys and little girls and defend Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. I’ll stick with real music that doesn’t get the airplay they deserves, because the record labels and radio stations are completely clueless about promoting quality artists and songs.

BillT13 | 10/15/2009, 12:10 am EST

Let’s cut all the neg thinking. Taylor Swift is the best female country artist out there right now.

Michael Jackson should win. He is the greatest artist ever walked on this planet

JP | 10/15/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Are you kidding me? Taylor Swift is the best female country artist out there right now? Taylor Swift is this generation Anne Murray. An adult contemporary singer who has some vaguely sounding country songs. If you are right Bill T, then country music as well as pop music is dead as fried chicken.

Boltz | 10/16/2009, 12:41 am EST

Hope Michael wins all 5!
Michael, you deserve it – you were, are and always will be the best.

??? | 10/16/2009, 8:25 am EST

r u kidding eminem should win all these so what if he swears in his songs thats his style mj is shit you cant tell a word hes sayin!!

quec | 10/16/2009, 9:19 am EST

this speaks for its self:
Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972),[1] known by his primary stage name Eminem, or by his alter ego Slim Shady, is an American rapper, record producer and actor. Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album The Slim Shady LP, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling hip hop album in history.[2] It brought Eminem increased popularity, including his own record label, Shady Records, and brought his group project D12 to mainstream recognition.

The Marshall Mathers LP and his third album, The Eminem Show, also won Grammy Awards, and in 2002, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for a song in the film 8 Mile, in which he also played the lead. Eminem then went on hiatus after touring in 2005. He released his first album since 2004’s Encore, titled Relapse, on May 15, 2009. Eminem has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide,[3] and in the United States is the best selling music artist of the 2000s.[4] Eminem is also ranked in the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine.[5] . He was also named the Best Rapper Ever By Vibe Magazine.[6]

Hopefully Eminem wins, he’s incredibly talented. The things he’s done for a genre of music. The acts he’s helped launch, and most importantly– the uniqueness and creativity he has brought to the world, like the greats before him…. It’s sad that we have to wait for an artist to pass until we finally realize that he was a great craftsman, R.I.P. Michael Jackson, King of Pop….

Nat | 10/18/2009, 3:26 am EST

gnc | 10/18/2009, 9:33 pm EST

If Eminem beats Jay-Z for best hip-hop album I’ll be extremely disappointed. Jay-Z is by far the most accomplished, consistent, well-rounded artist in his genre.
Unfortunately, he’s not POP-py enough for some people.

Matthew | 10/19/2009, 12:18 pm EST

Eminem FTW
Michael Jackson?
Fuck Michael Jackson

Matthew | 10/19/2009, 12:25 pm EST

Eminem is better than Jay-Zee gnc; did u catch Eminems rock the bells performance earlier this month? Jay-zee hasnt given a performance even resembling that in 3/4 years;
Plus think of new Eminem tracks like “Stay Wide Awake”; “Beautiful”; “Underground”; “Careful What You Wish For”. In my eyes, those fours songs are all classics surpassing any of Jay-Zee songs since the Black Album

Matthew | 10/19/2009, 3:23 pm EST

But I gotta say, I gotta get this off my chest… wtf happened to Eminem after filming 8 mile and recorded the songtrack. He was so focused at that point. He was easily, almost undisuptedly at tat point the greatest star in the world. He was clean, a star of the screen and musically genius (The Eminem Show was a Classic IDC what any1 says)… then the fucking drugs came… wtf! after 8mile. Proof was still 3 years away from getting shot dead. Em couldnt sleep and got hooked on thos prescription pills. Where was Em’s guidance? Where was his manager? His daughter? How could he slide away like that!

Matthew | 10/19/2009, 3:41 pm EST

In 2003 Em was undisputedly the greatest star in the world. A star of the screen and a genius for The Eminem Show. What happened to him after that great focused period of filming…

Matthew | 10/19/2009, 3:57 pm EST

He didnt have the guidance.. he was a god at that point 2003.. a musical rolling stone.. then five wasted years coz of drugs and he couldnt grow with the ppl around him

Matthew | 10/19/2009, 3:58 pm EST

It should never have happened.. I cant believe hes only now getting back for real to show the world what hes made of.
Oh well
Better late than never

sheshe | 10/20/2009, 10:45 am EST

OK, first of all, Michael Jackson needs to win ALL of his nominations!!
But wait, what about all the people who should of been nominated for certain categories too : Jordin Sparks, David Cook, All American Rejects… HEY, WHERE IS BRITNEY SPEARS?!?!?!?! I mean she had loads of airplay this year.. and MADONNA TOO. Man, did they get ripped off or what. I hate it when artists get slapped in the face like this. LONG
LIVE THE KING OF MUSIC!! GO MJ!!!!!

Matthew | 10/20/2009, 11:08 am EST

This list is soooo right. apart from michael and taylor swift of course

matthew | 10/22/2009, 8:51 am EST

if eminem doesnt win his four awards i am gonna call this a farce

Deborah Ffrench | 10/25/2009, 5:36 am EST

If anyone is interested in wanting to know the truth, like I was several months ago when – in shock at my reaction to Michael Jacksons death, I first started looking behind the haze of hyperbole I have been force-fed for years via newspapers, TV networks and tabloid feeders like Smoking Gun about Michael – I received a rude and shattering awakening. There is a reason why a depth charge of grief and anger has ignited in the hearts of millions, if not billions of people around the world – some of whom were not die-hard fans, as well as those of course, who are. I invite – no, urge anyone who wants to at least talk about possibilties; to read Mary A. Fischers award-winning article ‘Was Michael Jackson Framed’, google the verbal and written statements of Thomas Mesereau and Brian Oxman, read ‘The Michael Jackson Conspiracy’ by Aphrodite Jones, also Geraldine Hughes ‘Redemption’ and visit thesilencedtruth.com. On this site please take the time to look over the comments in the ‘Remember’ section – in particular Cory Rooney’s. For seemingly unfathomable reasons, a well-researched and successful extortion attempt by one man, Evan Chandler – a man who is now forcibly and legally estranged from his son, and who from copious statements from witnesses involved in the circumstances of that time has been described as a self-serving, opportunistic predator who cared little for his own son, and even less for the truth; – was given widespread coverage by a voracious media and legal credence by Sneddon’s department. When one looks behind the hysteria induced by Dimond, Orth, Allred and countless others who put ratings and copy before a human life, you end up with more of a collection of compelling questions than answers, and a more than seriously uneasy feeling of something being not quite ‘right’ about the sheer level of engineered cruelty involved.

In the years to come, perhaps reasons will emerge from the rubble as to why a supernovic talent with a history of unparalleled giving and a persona of complex innocence, was consistently and wilfully humiliated, tortured and stripped of his dignity and spirit for a period of over 15 years, on the basis of such astonishingly non-credible accusations – and more importantly why this was actively encouraged. These days everyone has an opinion about the life and death of Michael Jackson – myself included. But it cannot be denied that the potent, heady mix of newly syndicated, televison networks and online tabloids all fighting for their share of white hot media glare; the lure of fantastical amounts of money, and good old fashioned human greed; all came together to produce one mother of a takedown. In the final analysis, it seems this was never really a story about drugs and the Beatles catalogue – but about our willingness to believe a lie.

And no, I do not include the 2005 trial – Michael was found not guilty on all 14 counts by a highly conservative jury. One man links both sets of allegations -Tom Sneddon. This needs to be remembered. What was done to Michael Jackson, in the name of justice, will forever remain an indelible mark of shame on Tom Sneddon, Evan Chandler, Janet Arviso and the majority of the American Media.

In conclusion:

Michael deserves every single one of these awards, and in the world of my choosing he would be there to receive his wins in person.

You will be forever missed Michael.

Jonathan | 10/28/2009, 4:32 pm EST

t-Yearz92 | 11/10/2009, 5:23 am EST

i wont say that Taylor Swift is not talented, she is damn talented but the fact is she is almost lik an ant compared 2 legends lik Eminem n MJ

t-Yearz92 | 11/10/2009, 2:06 pm EST

i want Michael Jackson n Eminem wo win coz MJ is the legendary king of Pop n MnM is a very high calibered artistn 1 of the best lyricist of all time. here is ample below:
“Careful What You Wish For” by Eminem
So this is it…
This is what I wished for
Just isn’t how I envisioned it
Feigned to the point of imprisonment
I just thought the shit’d be different
But something changed
The minute that I got a whiff of it
I started to inhale it
Smell it
Started sniffin’ it
And it became my cocaine
I just couldn’t quit
I just wanted a little bit
Then it turned me (in)to a monster
I became a hypocrite
Concert after concert

I was raking in the dough
Rolling in green
Had the game hemmed up
Like a sewing machine
But I was losing my freedom
There was no where for me
To not go and be seen
And just go and be me
And there was no in-between
You either loved it or hate it

Every CD, critics gave it a 3, then 3
Years later, they’d go back and re-rate it
And call the Slim Shady LP the greatest
The Marshall Mathers was a classic
The Eminem Show was fantastic
But Encore just didn’t have the caliber to match it
I guess enough time just ain’t passed, yet
A couple more years, that shit’ll be ill-matic
And eight years later, I’m still at it
Divorce, re-married
A felon
A father
Sleeping pill addict
And this is real talk
I feel like the Incredible Hulk
My back has been broke, and I can still walk

[Chorus]

So be careful what you wish for
‘Cause you just might get it
And if you get it then you just might not know
What to do wit’ it, ’cause it might just
Come back on you ten-fold

I said

Be careful what you wish for
‘Cause you just might get it
And if you get it then you just might not know
What to do wit’ it, ’cause it might just
Come back on you ten-fold

[Verse 2]

I got a letter from a fan, that said
He’s been praying for me
Every day and for some reason
It’s been weighing on my mind heavy
‘Cause I don’t read every
Letter I get, but something told me to go ahead and open it, but
Why would someone pray for you when they don’t know you?
You didn’t pray for me when I was local
And as I lay these vocals
I think of all the shit I had to go through
Just to get to where I’m at
I’ve already told you at least

A thousand times in these rhymes
I appreciate the prayer, but I already got
God on my side
And it’s been one hell of a ride, hasn’t it?
Just watchin’ it from an opposite standpoint
Man, boy’s got to look
Nuts
And that’s the only word I can think of right now
On how
To describe the shit
This is like a vibe you get
Go ahead and bob to it
Just watch what you wish for, ’cause I got the shit

[Chorus]

So be careful what you wish for
‘Cause you just might get it
And if you get it then you just might not know
What to do wit’ it, ’cause it might just
Come back on you ten-fold

I said

Be careful what you wish for
‘Cause you just might get it
And if you get it then you just might not know
What to do wit’ it, ’cause it might just
Come back on you ten-fold

How many other ‘greatest hits’ albums of songs that are 20 years old have won AMA’s? lol

MJ should win | 11/19/2009, 11:56 pm EST

First of all emenem or whatever his name is, is a wanna be rapper. He is fucking gay and everyone i know thinks so to. taylor swift is a bitch, i hate her i hope she loses seriously not that many people like country music. Jonas Brothers are also gay no one likes them except for little girls.

Michael on the other hand deserves these awards. I dont give a fuck if you hate Michael, just shut-up you gave him a hard time when he was alive he doesn’t need it now. I am behind Michael 100%.

Fuck all those Michael haters, talyor swift lovers.

idk why michael jackson is a nominee. he/she wasnt nominated for any AMAs when Number Ones originally released is Nov. of 2003. it didnt even reach the Billboard 200s top 10. it peaked at 13. so again, michael jackson should not be a nominee for any award. but hey, what do i know, being a drug addict must be cool bc michael jackson does it.

go MJ..catch’em all…(^^)

taylorluva | 11/22/2009, 10:15 am EST

taylor swift-is the most nominated person in the whole thing. so one, obviously people care abouther and like her

2- she has sold more albums than anyone on the planet in 2008-2009, so umm yea she has a greater chance than anyone to win

and three- she had 6 number one hits on fearless

4-GO SWEEP MICHAEL JACKSON!

I hope MJ doesn’t win any awards.

I’m sorry, but Jackson hasn’t been musically relevant in the U.S. for years. That’s a fact. The spike in sales of his music is due solely to his death. He deserves a tribute based on what he contributed to music, but nominating him for awards cheapens the AMAs.

Sorry but you failed,Eminem is not a wannabe rapper.

I don’t get it. Taylor Swift can’t sing. How is she winning all of these awards?
