Weekend Rock List: Peace Songs

10/9/09, 5:32 pm EST

President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this morning, just nine months into his first term in office, for his efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons and his strides toward curbing global warming. To celebrate Obama’s honor, this long weekend’s Rock List will focus on songs that promote “Peace.” Tell us your favorites, and on Tuesday we’ll count up the ballots and announce who wins the rock list for Peace Song (it’s like winning the Nobel without the international prestige and cash reward). Until then, check out our picks below:

• Elvis Costello – “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding”
• Plastic Ono Band – “Give Peace a Chance”
• Thom Yorke – “Atoms for Peace”
• The Doors – “Peace Frog”
• Weezer – “Peace”

(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding is really the only competition. Give a little credit to Tom Waits’ Road to Peace, but that’s the obvious one for me.

Coachmaddog, in case you missed the point, that is why he said the Jimi Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner, which had no lyrics, therefore, could NOT glorify war. It was an epic anti-war statement, and at this point I think the best suggestion yet.

Green Day is using “Peacemaker” as a euphemism for gun. Granted it does have the word “peace” in the title, but that’s not what we’re doing here.

“Holiday” is their anti-war song. And what’s the opposite of war…

OK Coach maddog, I read more into what he meant, and you didn’t so I am dumb. Yet in the original post the writer stated he was nominating the Jimi Hendrix version of the star spangled banner, you answered that he was dumb because the star spangled banner glorified war, but the Hendrix version uses no lyrics, so how could it glorify war? DO I need to say it??? Yeah I do. Coach maddog, you are dumb!

Jerry Garcia | 10/12/2009, 7:46 pm EST

Coach Maddog= Dumbass…he did not have to say it, anybody who knows about Hendrix at woodstock knows that it WAS a very strong ANTI-WAR statement. By far the best suggestion yet!! Right on Matthew Mccoll!!

I can’t believe that an article in one of the top music magazines in history would indicate that Elvis Costello wrote “What’s so Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding”. Even though ECs version is more well known it was written (and performed better in my opinion) by Nick Lowe. Yes, I know someone already pointed this out but I just had to write something.

nat | 10/13/2009, 4:21 pm EST

how can everyone forget the greatest peace song of all time. it is get together by the youngbloods

Anonymous | 10/13/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Where does it say anywhere that Elvis Costello wrote “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?”

It’s widely known that he didn’t but his is unquestionably the definitive version though.
