Phish Announce Fall Tour, Hint at “Born to Run” For Halloween Set

On the heels of Joy and a sold-out reunion tour, Phish have announced their fall live dates, which kick off just over two weeks after the jam quartet perform their three-night Festival 8 in Indio, California. The new trek launches November 18th at Detroit’s Cobo Arena and journeys throughout the Northeast, including a three-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 2nd through 4th. The current dates only travel as far south Charlottesville, Virginia, on December 5th, so we’d expect some more dates in the coming weeks. Will Phish perform another New Year’s Ever blowout? We’ll find out soon enough.

Phish come alive: check out photos from their first reunion gig.

Meanwhile, as Rolling Stone reported, Phish continue to kill off album covers at their Festival 8 page as they count down to their “musical costuming” on Halloween, when the band will perform another artist’s album in its entirety. The last album standing in the gallery will be the band’s pick for the October 31st show. The Rolling Stone favorite, Prince’s Purple Rain, remains unscathed, as does the dark horse, MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular. However, one eagle-eyed RS commenter named “Sinbad” brought something interesting to our attention in our last post: “On Springsteen’s album cover Born to Run [at the Festival 8 shooting gallery], Bruce’s normal Fender Telecaster is replaced by Trey’s Languedoc Guitar.”

Lo and behold, he’s right, the guitars have been swapped. Is this a major clue or a red herring? As another reader just pointed out, some other album covers have been tampered with: Tom Petty is shown wearing a Phish tee on the Damn the Torpedoes cover, it’s Phish inside the Hello Nasty sardine can instead of the Beastie Boys, and other little nods to Phishdom that we’ll let you seek out.

Both Phish and Springsteen headlined this year’s Bonnaroo Festival, with Springsteen joining Phish onstage during the last night of the fest. Together, they played three songs — “Glory Days,” “Bobby Jean” and “Mustang Sally” — but nothing off Born to Run. Bruce has been playing Born to Run in its entirety lately, so maybe Phish will follow suit? The plot continues to thicken.

Look back at photos from Phish’s entire career.

Several other album covers have been altered. Look Closely

Beastie Boys
Steely Dan
Ramones
Rush
T-Rex
Tom Petty

Augustus | 10/9/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Many of the album covers have been “tampered with.” Look closely at Rush “Moving Pictures” (Trey and Page moving a keyboard), Steely Dan “Pretzel Logic” (Fish’s horn helmet), Tom Petty’s Phish T-shirt, Beastie Boys’ “Hello Nasty” sardine can. They’re messing with everyone…

really? | 10/9/2009, 2:07 pm EST

The Beastie Boys cover is a pic that was in this very magazine. There’s at least one other that has been altered. I freakin’ can’t stand Phish and I somehow know this?

zappa>god | 10/9/2009, 2:50 pm EST

come on Hot Rats!

Captain Obvious | 10/9/2009, 3:24 pm EST

would love American Beauty…

Billy | 10/9/2009, 7:29 pm EST

The opening notes of the first track on Hendrix’s “Electric Ladyland” sound exactly like the spooky gong sound on the Phish Halloween site. Could be a clue…

Ryan | 10/9/2009, 7:59 pm EST

American beauty would be awesome…SEE YOU IN ALBANY PHANS LET THE PARTY BEGIN

ryan | 10/9/2009, 9:30 pm EST

bring on albany!

west coast | 10/10/2009, 1:18 am EST

what you albany phans need too do is get to Indio for the HALLOWEEN SHOW. You will jizz in your pants when you see how the west coast throws down, all the medi weed you can handle baby, mushrooms grow wild up north in oregon and washington!!!!! Just so you know I’m from upstate NY and moved west 8 years ago, wouldn’t dream of moving back with or without all the big festies out there. West is where its at if youre a real head! I sense a huge exodus of more east coast kids to the west after this show is over with.

east coast | 10/10/2009, 9:10 am EST

fuck the west coast! The west coast blows compared to the east coast. Ive been west and all the people there are way too chill and boring. East coasters now how to get down and rage. Seeing shows on the east coast is so much more exciting. Enjoy the festival in Cali because I am sure it will be the last west coast festival….

Parker | 10/10/2009, 10:51 am EST

To each his own.

I personally hope they play MGMT. All my phriends hate this band and I would love it so much.

See ya’ll in Cinci and VA.

west coast | 10/10/2009, 11:24 am EST

Like I said if youre a real head. Sounds like you’re full of “rage”, you are right though, we are way chill!!!! Must be all that west coast love!!

THANKS PHISH! | 10/10/2009, 11:43 am EST

dude i went to a phish show once, got sold some shooms in the parkinglot, met some fat chic, had sex with her in the parking lot, never made it in, she got pregnant, we ended up getting married and now have 3 kids, i work in a shoe store and hate my life. Thanks Phish.

the mole | 10/10/2009, 3:02 pm EST

Another alteration: Evil Empire lists its band as “Page” Against The Machine.

But I’m rooting for Ziggy Stardust.

Marc | 10/11/2009, 11:54 pm EST

Obvious alteration on the Nivana cover. That’s Fishman’s pecker.

friend of the devil | 10/12/2009, 1:09 am EST

hmm so for the nyc shows you think i should get up close or is it better to be a little further back into the crowd..which way is better to enjoy the concert

Alive 2 for sure | 10/12/2009, 10:19 am EST

YOU WANTED THE BEST AND YOU GOT THE BEST, THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE LAND…PHISH! They will be joined by Peter and Ace at some point as well. It’s gonna be baddass!

john | 10/12/2009, 11:26 am EST

i guess if you can’t come up with any good material of your own you might as well cover somebody else.

Leon | 10/12/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Not sure if it’s been pointed out -Fishman appears on Exile on Main Street. I’m on the American Beauty bandwagon. In my circle of friends who are “Phans,” most avoid any talk of the Dead as part of a Phish conversation- likely due to the early and unfounded comparisons between the bands, i.e. Phish mimicks the GD, or Phish capitalized on the absence of the GD. That was a long time ago, and Phish has more than established themselves as unique, talented and creative. Point is, I think a lot of fans would enjoy a GD cover, not necessarily for the Halloween show, not necessarily an entire album, but something GD other than those poor recordings from the mid 80’s. I think American Beauty would be a great musical costume for Phish and be a big surprise to those of the “Grateful Dead… that’ll never happen” bunch. Just my opinion, and I’m not hanging my hat on American Beauty… there are plenty of amazing albums left on the chopping block. When the smoke clears on 10/31, I have no doubt a good product will emerge.

Hambone | 10/12/2009, 1:03 pm EST

Are they ever going to come south again? its been since 99

Jerry Garcia ain't dead | 10/13/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Phuck Phish. Listen to WideSpreadPanic

Jerry Garcia ain't dead | 10/13/2009, 3:15 pm EST

And they won’t come down south because of the debacle in Knoxville. Ktown cops hate ‘em cause they confiscated like a millie in drugs from thier last show there. A retarded amount of people got arrested and Im pretty sure they told Phish to get out of town and stay the phuck out. Hell, the cops there almost arrested Dave Matthews for playing too long, it was a great show and he played forever, wich was past thier bedtime I guess. Dave hasn’t been back yet either.
But WideSpread comes every year and burns the house down. They are unbelievable live.

jack | 10/13/2009, 3:28 pm EST

best band in america right now

Parker | 10/13/2009, 11:07 pm EST

Don’t even compare Panic to Phish. Completly different.

zee | 10/14/2009, 9:53 am EST

the hottest cover band in america…

johnny mac | 10/14/2009, 12:47 pm EST

country walrus | 10/14/2009, 4:32 pm EST

you can be assured the halloween set will be Dio, Holy Diver

pfft | 10/14/2009, 6:14 pm EST

smelly hippy kids

A | 10/15/2009, 12:45 pm EST

So many people who hate on Phish are straight up haters who never acknowledge that they are reading every damn article that gets posted about them! Why the fuck are you reading the article then? We don’t need your stankin ass anyway. I know that when I see a Rod Stewart or Smashing Pumpkins article, I don’t click and read and post about it; I just skip it like it wasn’t ever there. Why waste your time and mine, Phish-haters. You’ll never understand this music. Deal with it, and keep it to your goddamn self.

Wes Schauble | 10/22/2009, 10:10 am EST

A few more altered albums to note. Minutemen’s Double Nickel’s has Page in the rearview mirror. Electric Ladyland has Fishman in the middle of all the ladies. Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes has Phish hiding out in the back row.

truth | 10/22/2009, 2:38 pm EST

You Forgot about Jon Fishman’s face on the “banned” cover of Jimi’s Electric Ladyland.

brilliant

Mrs. Devo | 10/22/2009, 7:54 pm EST

“Thriller” gets my vote for Halloween cover. Don’t love the original version but would LOVE to hear THEIR version! Imagine the possibilities!

palmer | 10/23/2009, 12:45 pm EST

born to run would be the lamest thing ever if thats what they decided to cover. i think i would actually leave the festival if thats what they chose. it was lame when they played together, please spare your fans the touture of an entire album of BS.
