Lady Gaga Explores Seamy Side of Fame on “Monster” Re-Release

“I think re-releases are unfair,” Lady Gaga told Rolling Stone last week. “It’s artists sneaking singles onto an already finished piece of work in an effort to keep the album afloat. Originally [my label] only wanted me to put out three songs and now it’s much more than that. It’s a new album’s worth of material.”

She wasn’t kidding: Lady Gaga has revealed the details of her upcoming The Fame Monster, featuring the Hot Diva’s breakthrough debut album plus eight songs that explore the sordid side of fame. The album is due out November 24th, with the official version of the leaked “Bad Romance” being released as the first single in early November. In addition to RedOne, who produced “Bad Romance” as well as “Just Dance” and “Poker Face,” Gaga will also collaborate with producers like Teddy Riley, Rodney Jerkins, Ron Fair and Fernando Garibay on Monster.

Check out Lady Gaga’s wildest wardrobe moments.

“On my re-release The Fame Monster, I wrote about everything I didn’t write on The Fame,” Gaga said in a statement. “While traveling the world for two years, I’ve encountered several monsters, each represented by a different song on the new record: my ‘Fear of Sex Monster,’ my ‘Fear of Alcohol Monster,’ my ‘Fear of Love Monster,’ my ‘Fear of Death Monster,’ my ‘Fear of Loneliness Monster,’ etc.” The themes seems to echo what Gaga was teasing with her and Kanye West’s “Fame Kills” tour, but as Rolling Stone previously reported, that trek was canceled last week. Instead, Gaga will embark on her own solo tour.

“I spent a lot of nights in Eastern Europe, and this album is a pop experimentation with industrial/Goth beats, ’90s dance melodies, an obsession with the lyrical genius of ’80s melancholic pop, and the runway. I wrote while watching muted fashion shows and I am compelled to say my music was scored for them,” Gaga said of what inspired the new tracks on Monster. “I also composed a ballad for the album, ‘Speechless,’ a song for my father, and it’s my favorite work of all. I wrote every piece on the road — no songs about money, no songs about fame. I wrote it for my fans, so I wrote everything in between.”

what’s that she coughed out? is that phlegm or semen? Let’s continue to celebrate mediocrity!

I guess this is why they are comparing her to Madonna? If she wasn’t a pop tart girl could lead a marketing firm.

BK | 10/9/2009, 11:09 am EST

I am sick of this chick.

pachahead | 10/9/2009, 12:02 pm EST

thank you lady gaga you and all the people that support your stinky senseless art,are killing the music.Stop thinking you are the future of music you got a long road to walk on by.

gagafan | 10/9/2009, 12:28 pm EST

i love Lady Gaga and i am so happy someone is reinventing the music scene. I love “The Fame” album and listen to it frequently. I cannot wait to see her on tour. One thing with her, she sings LIVE!! no lip synching and she also is a wonderful pianist. She is an artist and someone who isn’t afraid to express herself. I hope she is here for the long haul.

Radio Zero | 10/9/2009, 2:04 pm EST

Did you see that? There are sparks coming out of her bra! I didn’t read the article, but I’m sure it was well written.

daniel | 10/9/2009, 3:52 pm EST

dumb name, stupid songs, can’t dance, crappy dance music, sings likes a poodle and looks like one too.

The only thing she has reinvented is mediocrity.

Stop buying this crap and support real artists …

Go Girl | 10/9/2009, 4:23 pm EST

The Lady is a breath of fresh air. She’s immensely talented and she’s not afraid to think and express outside of the proverbial box. Good for her.

Love her album. Looking forward to hearing (and seeing) her new works.

Shawn | 10/9/2009, 5:01 pm EST

Everyone keeps putting Lady Gaga and “mediocraty” together. Lady Gaga works her ass off on everything, from the the music to the sequin outfit. If you dont like her at least respect her for her work. For all the people who hate her (for some stupid reason) I would love to know what you consider “music”?

Black Hole Sun | 10/9/2009, 5:32 pm EST

@ Shawn:
She is talented, but her music sucks, it’s still the same recycled pop crap that’s dominating the radio, so I can’t respect her for that. And it’s not because my mentality is I don’t like it so therefore it sucks. I don’t like Tori Amos, but I don’t think she sucks. I don’t like Radiohead, but I don’t think they suck. What do I consider music? Oh, artists who TRULY take things to the next level with their music, not just their sequined outfits. I like Muse for instance. They bring something to music that not too many artists are bringing. Great live performers and great musicians as well. Can’t compare the drivel that Lady Gaga is making to their stuff.

Tina | 10/9/2009, 5:42 pm EST

Shawn:

They do that because she is mediocre … the only talent she has is to promote herself. She wears Cher’s throwaways and people think it is avant garde or hip or cutting edge. Her 15 minutes are almost up … next!

kels | 10/9/2009, 5:45 pm EST

I never got the whole Gaga thing until SNL – she is the real deal

Jason | 10/9/2009, 5:45 pm EST

Nothing that Lady GaGa is doing is new or provocative … it has all been done before and far better. RS you should rock – Grady DaDa does not.

LOL | 10/9/2009, 6:04 pm EST

I feel for you haters :)

theben | 10/9/2009, 6:48 pm EST

she’s just getting really boring

K | 10/9/2009, 9:14 pm EST

Lady Gaga is hardly mediocre, and she’s both inventive and fresh. Her performances and songs are cutting-edge, and she always finds new ways to surprise and inspire her audience. If it’s not your type of music, fine, but at least recognize her for what she is: A strong, talented individual who pushes herself for both for her shows and her music. Again, mediocre Lady Gaga is not. You can love her or you can hate her, but you can’t ignore her.

bezdomny | 10/9/2009, 10:01 pm EST

I also thought Lady Gaga was another insipid pop star selling mock sexuality in place of talent until I heard her on Saturday Night Life. For some reason her voice is lifeless and mediocre on her singles. Her live performance is a different matter. Type in “Lady Gaga” and “acoustic” on youtube, her version of Paparazzi is astounding. She could easily be in a creative league with Regina Spektor but it probably doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who is making more money. Lady Gaga actually depressed me for and entirely different reason. Her is someone who is hyper-talented who has reduced that talent to rehashed cliches to sell records. And you know what, if she had put out something that reflected just how good she really is, me and 20,000 other people would be spending the next 10 years playing her for all of our friends who would all say, wow, she is so good, why haven’t I ever hear of her? Because she wasn’t “Lady Gaga.”

Ceeg | 10/10/2009, 12:01 am EST

“Lady Gaga Explores Seamy Side of “Fame” on “Monster”
Singer speaks out about November LP.”

Going by that on the front page, I thought this was going to be a brand new LP, of like 15 something songs exploring the “fortune and fame” she experienced after the first album.. and that she was going to be all angsty and grumpy and change all her fancy little costumes and go on a two year long “Monster” tour with many dancers in various monster and hooker costumes and at one point of the concert she’d expressivly shoot at a “The Fame” billboard with a AK47…

But no… what a letdown…

nick | 10/10/2009, 12:02 am EST

bezdomny, i totally agree with you. everytime i see her perform live, i am impressed. hearing the singles on the radio, i just go “next!” her voice is very strong and her instrumentation is something to really take note of. however, i do get annoyed everytime she opens her mouth because she seems a bit TOO contrived for me, like every single damn sentence is planned for maximum sound bite use. you know, like “let me show people how deep and tongue in cheek i am.”

Black Hole Sun | 10/10/2009, 1:07 am EST

@ bezdomny:
I feel the exact same way. There’s no doubt the girl can sing and she plays the piano, I mean there aren’t many mainstream acts who can play an instrument at all, let alone quite well like she does, but instead of exercising that talent to her fullest potential and making some truly innovative kick-ass music that is timeless, she’s making shitty pop music that we’ve already heard countless times from her non-talented counterparts. Not to mention her staged “edginess”, with all the publicity stunts, is something Madonna’s already done, so she’s not exactly breaking barriers there, either. I didn’t think she was anything special either, until I saw her acoustic performances on YouTube. What a waste of talent. But I guess fame and money mean that much to her. Oh well.

Not a fan of that type of music but she was very original and impressive on SNL. I was surprised.

i am very excited for this album to come out i am big lady gaga fan and i loved her first album but i do think many things about this new album like the title and re-releasing the album. to be honest i think its silly re-releasing things, she should just make a whole new album but with a different title as i dont agree with that crap title

hm | 10/10/2009, 5:22 pm EST

alright. so lady gaga is destroying the music world? lieees. how can one woman single handedly destroy music? that’s stupid. maybe she isn’t like M.J. or Madonna, but seriously, she isn’t horrible like people make her out to be. Her music is great, and her style is refreshing to those of us that are fucking tired of the same “skinny jean and i-dont-care” style. so let’s not trash the artist that is actually artistic. she’s keeping creativity alive which is what music is about.

How is Lady Gaga popular and a true artist such as Natasha Khan (a.k.a. Bat For Lashes) not as popular?

Chris | 10/11/2009, 1:13 pm EST

Actually, a Lady Gaga and Bat for Lashes collaboration might make me poop my pants in excitement. Both enormously talented girls.

spacecase | 10/11/2009, 7:41 pm EST

Natasha Khan and Lady Gaga are two of the best singers out there today. They both have amazing voices and stage presence.

Yes Lady Gaga is a freak show. But the woman was raw talent. Plus she has a sweet personality to match. It’s easy to be disgusted with mainstream music these days. Everytime I hear Taylor Swift ’sing’ some teen drama I want to puke. But Lady Gaga is the real deal. As much as I hate album re-issues (that aren’t by the Who) I’m planning on getting this one.

Fred | 10/12/2009, 11:38 am EST

The Seeker | 10/12/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Her piano-driven performance of “Paparazzi” is damn good. Too bad she obscures her songs with boring synths and beats.

Chris | 10/12/2009, 6:14 pm EST

Stop expecting Gaga to be something she is not.

Do you go to a broadway show expecting a five-piece band, playing their own instruments as they sing? No. Because that’s not what Broadway is. A lot of what Gaga does is theatre, and while you don’t have to like it, at least accept that it’s an entirely different art form than that of whatever rock band you’re comparing her to.

There are many genres of music, and of art. People think dance music, and pop music, is soulless. This is so untrue. I enjoy the contrast between electronic synths and beats and the human voice. There’s something to it. People who act like there’s only one “right” way to make music can’t be true musicians. You don’t have to like it, but it IS music and it DOES have a place.

She is edgy. Watch some of her short films — she’s a visual artist as well. Stop trying to limit her. No, she’s not playing in a “Muse-style” band, but that isn’t what she does and that’s not what she’s going for.

She actually has a lot of relevant things to say. People don’t understand the irony, and instead they insist she’s “dumbing down american culture.” Things aren’t always what they seem.

Think before you speak. Next.

Chris | 10/12/2009, 6:18 pm EST

And another thing: you people act as if it’s easy to write a number one hit single.

Hit songs are songs that are so universal that they resonate with an entire population. Gaga has written songs like this, most people have not.

Simple songs that appeal to a smaller group of people, which are more abstract and experimental — they definitely have their place! There is beauty in those songs as well. But they are not pop songs, and they are not usually culturally relevant in a macro sense.

Second, I want to say “The Fame” is her first album. She is talented. Her talent will continue to be evident on her future releases. I already hear the progression in “Bad Romance.” Great, dark, anthemic melodies. Sounds like Depeche Mode.

In ten years I’m confident the haters will be proven wrong.

nanci | 10/12/2009, 7:08 pm EST

I enjoy all forms of music, but Lady GaGa has little to offer – all of it has been done before, there is no edge, there is no creativity, there is no innovation, there is no talent – just a bad photocopy …. free your mind and support artists who actually create …..

She can do better than that | 10/12/2009, 7:55 pm EST

“And another thing: you people act as if it’s easy to write a number one hit single.”

Well if it wasn’t so easy, and Lady Gaga is an exceptional case for having so much mainstream success, then how do you explain Britney Spears, The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, among others, having as much success as Gaga, not to mention more? Here’s the story behind their success: GENIUS MARKETING. That’s all. Not because they make music that is on par with Mozart. Their “simple pop songs” are a “universal hit” because of catchy choruses and beats that anyone can sing along to, not because there’s any real meaning or beauty in the songs, no matter how much you want to prove otherwise, fanboy. Cole Porter wrote simple, not terribly profound songs, yet the reason they still resonate today is because they’re cleverly written. He wrote simple songs that were still genius. And yes, they’re fun to know all the lyrics to, but when you pay real attention to the songs, you can’t help but be amazed at the genius of Cole Porter. Same goes for the other great songwriters of his time, like Ira Gershwin and Arthur Freed. You can’t compare “P-p-p-oker face, p-p-p-oker face” to the their stuff. Lady Gaga’s talent for writing songs that are damn near guaranteed to be Top 40 hits isn’t all that special, when you see what’s dominating the charts. “Boom Boom Pow” is a massive global hit, would you call that a cleverly written song? The standards for good music today are at an all-time low. Simple songs don’t have to, and shouldn’t be lame to be hits.

And no one’s asking her to be a prog-rocker, or do any other genre of music. She wants to do pop music, fine. All I ask is that it be QUALITY music, regardless of genre. Michael Jackson made pop music, and it is quality, timeless, non-derivative stuff. Not to mention his “short films”, a.k.a. music videos were some truly edgy, innovative visual art. And he didn’t have to dress like a tranny prostitute to get everyone’s attention. He did that with his talent. Maybe Lady Gaga could consider doing the same. I hope on next album she does just that. Because I highly doubt she can go the distance if she were to keep churning out albums like The Fame. Oh what am I talking about? If Britney Spears can have a long-term career with crap albums and zero talent, then anyone can!

John Bastick | 10/12/2009, 11:58 pm EST

Will rollingstone pick their collective middle aged white guy democrat mouths of the ground and stop worshiping a thing whiche released medoicre pop music at best

Chris | 10/13/2009, 4:34 am EST

I never said she’s the second coming. I think she has more talent to show and more growing to do.

Britney Spears does not write her own songs. The reason she has hits, besides marketing, is because the songwriters writing for her have their pulse on the culture, and whether you like it or not that is not an easy skill to master. I agree that marketing has a lot to do with it, and I agree that the major label machine has a lot to do with it.

When I say “short films” I mean the short films she did for her tour, not her videos, although those are important too. The “pop ate my heart” videos, etc.

The whole point is that I think you’re missing the point. You don’t have to like it, but calling it derivative or superficial only means that you are the one who is looking at it on a superficial level. How many of her performances have you seen? I’m not talking about her album; I am talking about seeing her in person because it is a whole different experience.

You can appreciate her on a superficial level. That is how most of the world and top 40 radio appreciate her. But there are other layers to her that are really interesting, other themes to her persona that are very well thought idea — ideas and references that are actually very intelligent. But to see it in that way requires one to think a bit and fall into her world for a bit. I don’t expect everyone to do that, I just want to say that that world is there.

The difference between miley and britney and gaga is that gaga isn’t disney. She was doing some wack shit in NYC before she got signed. The difference is she didn’t have a stage mom — she wanted it bad, and she manifested it. She got signed, and dropped, and signed again. She went to Tisch at NYU on early admission and played in bands.

I disagree, because I think it’s quality. I don’t think the fame is the best album of the year, or necessarily a great album. What I recognize in her is a talent that has not yet fully been realized. It’s the same talent I saw in her before she was famous, when Interscope flew me out to her release party at highline ballroom. I don’t like her because she’s popular. I liked her before she was, and I continue to like her now that she is.

I think her human side is showing more lately. “Imagine” at the HRC dinner, the new york song on SNL — it’s taking a lot of people time to warm up to her, and some won’t ever, and that’s totally fine.

I just feel it’s my place to say this: just because you don’t see her value doesn’t mean it does not exist. Maybe it doesn’t resonate with you, but it resonates with me, and the value is there if you look at it. Go see one of her shows, for the hell of it, I think you’ll be able to have a more informed opinion afterwards.

Chris | 10/13/2009, 4:36 am EST

And MJ was as much about fashion as Gaga, don’t kid yourself. I am not comparing them or saying they are equals, but don’t pretend MJ would be the same figure if it weren’t for how he dressed and how he presented himself.

I am so tired of people acting as if she should be wearing jeans and a tshirt, come on. The costumes are an extension of the character and the music.

Chris | 10/13/2009, 4:51 am EST

Also, I would NEVER tell a fan of an artist that there was “no real meaning or beauty” in said artist’s songs.

That is rude and pointless, and meaning is relative. We are obviously not from the same generation and/or subculture; the symbols and sounds that have meaning for me completely go over your head. The references go over your head, and the irony goes over your head. The whole meaning goes over your head and that’s why you think there is none.

gaga is an exception in my taste. i loathe most top 40, but i love pop. i love anything dramatic and over the top: bjork, patrick wolf… i love the cure, the pixies, mew, and yes, i like muse.

I hate that there is automatically a stigma attached to liking something top 40, perpetuated by people who have probably only heard a couple snippets of the songs on the radio. There’s no need to get all high and mighty about an artist you haven’t researched.

Charles | 10/13/2009, 11:16 am EST

Lady GaGa is a non-event. A mash up of Cher, Madonna and Gene Simmons. And her music is even less impressive. If this is the future of pop music we are in for one boring era. There is some great pop and dance music out there – this is not one of them.

Jean | 10/13/2009, 11:45 am EST

Lady Gaga is just another talentless wonder. If you need proof check out her version of Lennon’s Imagine. It’s embarrasing for everyone involved. It makes me sick the RS even covers her. RS wake the fuck up and be consistent in promoting real musicians.

Torlato-Favrini | 10/13/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Chris, just accept that not everyone likes her, ok? Some people like her for their own reasons, and others dislike her for their own reasons. No artist, no matter how “talented” or “brilliant” they are are universally loved. Reasons can range from perfectly understandable to downright stupid. Either way it doesn’t matter. Stop trying to get people who aren’t fans of Lady Gaga to see what you see. If they wanted to like her, they wouldn’t need to be convinced to do so. There’s nothing worse than having an artist shoved down your throat and being made to feel that something’s wrong with you if you don’t like them. Good for you if you think she’s all that. But don’t think that you’re smarter or more open-minded than everyone else because you “get her” and others don’t. TASTE IS SUBJECTIVE. And this is coming from someone who can listen to Lauryn Hill, and then pop in a Queen record afterwards. I have a very diverse taste in music too, but I don’t like EVERYTHING.

daniel | 10/13/2009, 4:44 pm EST

Give it up Chris. If you like her great. But stop trying to force feed others – they are entitled to their opinion. Musical tastes are subjective. I’m a white 48 year old who likes all types of music from Public Enemy to The Jam to Miles Davis to Yo La Tengo to Mountain Goats to … well you get the picture. Live and let live ….

Chris | 10/13/2009, 6:20 pm EST

Taste being subjective is actually exactly my point.

I totally accept that not everyone likes her, as I said over and over again. I am not trying to force-feed anyone. I totally get that not everyone wants to listen to her. After all, different tastes are what make us unique.

I was only responding to what I perceived to be ignorant statements based on very superficial knowledge of the artist in question. Often women (and especially women) in pop music or on the radio are instantly written off, and in gaga’s case, misunderstood. You have your right to critique but I have my right to respond, hopefully, in a respectful way.

It’s one thing to critique a work and quite another to insult fans, because it’s all relative, and we all get something different from our favorite music. Statements like “these emotions can’t POSSIBLY be real,” or “this approach can’t POSSIBLY be meaningful” are quite silly, and on a website that reviews and critique albums, I think this is an important distinction to make.

This was my only point. I would actually hate to live in a world where EVERYONE loved gaga, that would be silly and kind of ridiculous, wouldn’t it?

sbach | 10/14/2009, 8:31 am EST

“I think re-releases are unfair.” Except mine, because it’s way cooler than everyone else’s. Because sparks shoot out of my bra. And I’m hipper than you.

@hm:

She most certainly is like MJ and Madonna, when they came out these same “pop isn’t REAL music” morons were saying that they were talentless hacks who wouldn’t last. Gaga has that X factor that MJ, Madonna, Prince, etc. have demonstrated in the past that keeps their music alive across generations.

To people who think that she is just recycling mainstream crap then you don’t listen to much pop music do you? I come from the world of house/trance music and for us to have someone like Gaga out there is a huge win for us (even though a lot of us won’t admit to it lol) but someone is flying the flag for our genre in the mainstream and it’s about time. Pop music has been essentially a suburb-friendly dumbed down version of hip hop for the last 20 years, so for Gaga to come out with tracks like “Poker Face”, “Love Game”, “Money Honey”, and now “Bad Romance” (thank you Red One!!!!) Is just huge for us. Nobody in the top 40 world has been willing to touch anything with a 4×4 beat for a LONG time now but Gaga said “To hell with it, this is the music I love and it’s what I’m going to put out there” and she’s doing it brilliantly well.

I hope she makes even more money and fame off of her new album and shoves it right down all you haters’ throats. If you don’t like it then go sit on your porch and wear your Abercrombie and listen to your Garth Brooks.

Gagalover | 10/25/2009, 2:45 am EST

She is talented, but not original. She has copied many other artists looks, styles, costumes, and concepts. Besides, her music is starting to sound all alike.
I am sick of people saying how deep this woman is. Bluffing with my muffin, and I wanna take a ride on your disco stick is not that deep people. She is just another manufactured pop star for those of you who don’t like the cookie cutter pop star. Lol, the marketers will get us all!
Just need to add that pretentious attitude is quite a turn off. If she didn’t act like she was better than everyone else, she would have way more fans. I have spoke with so many people who state that they would like her if she wasn’t so arrogant.

This woman is not attractive. Too much fake everything. Once she takes the wig, fake lashes, costume, and layer of make up, she is below average. Google lady gaga with no makeup in hawaii. Hideous!
I guess that’s why all the shock value….. Nobody wants to look at her. Hence all the gimmicks.
