Temple of the Dog Reunite at Pearl Jam’s Los Angeles Concert

10/7/09, 3:27 pm EST

Pearl Jam’s concert last night at Los Angeles’ Gibson Amphitheatre became the scene of a brief Temple of the Dog reunion, as Chris Cornell joined the Backspacer band for a rendition of the 1991 hit “Hunger Strike,” EW reports. The performance unified all the principal members of Temple of the Dog — Cornell, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Matt Cameron, Mike McCready and background vocalist Eddie Vedder — for the first time since 2003, when these superpowers of Seattle grunge also teamed up in California to perform “Hunger Strike” and “Reach Down.”

But wait, there’s more: Rolling Stone has learned that the other members of Soundgarden — guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd — came to the show with Cornell to check out their drummer Matt Cameron pounding the skins with his new band. The pow-wow represents the first time the full band has been seen publicly together in more than a decade. RS recently spoke with Thayil about the potential of a Soundgarden reunion and the possibility of fans getting their hands on scores of unreleased tracks.

Check out photos of more supergroups, from Cream to Them Crooked Vultures.

Temple of the Dog was a one-off tribute band that formed following the death of Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood. Cornell was roommates with Wood, while Gossard and Ament were members of Mother Love Bone before ultimately forming Pearl Jam in the wake of Wood’s death. Vedder, then just hired to front Pearl Jam, contributed background vocals and split lead-singing duties on “Hunger Strike” to Temple of the Dog’s lone album.

If the above performance and the members of Soundgarden in the audience weren’t grungetastic enough, Pearl Jam had one more Seattle surprise in store for Los Angeles: Pearl Jam also welcomed out Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell during “Alive,” with McCready abandoning his guitar so Cantrell could slay the solo. According to EW, at the end of the show, everyone involved bowed arm in arm to the audience.

Grunge was the last great movement in American music and if it makes a comeback I’m all for it. BTW Chris Cornell sounds like he’s ready for that Soundgarden reunion…

TheCoz | 10/7/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Amazing! I truly hope they make a DVD out of this concert…just epic!

Muso | 10/7/2009, 4:28 pm EST

In what way is Pearl Jam Matt Cameron’s “new band”? LOL

Sande | 10/7/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Holy fuck…I live on the wrong coast. Lucky those that were at there last night.

rur | 10/7/2009, 4:42 pm EST

OMG Chris sounds awesome. This is his best performance in years!
This is so cool!

TheCoz | 10/7/2009, 4:46 pm EST

@ Muso

That is like someone buying a used 1998 Chevy and calling it his “new ride”.

tommystinsonrules | 10/7/2009, 5:48 pm EST

When the Onion ran a piece about Soundgarden reuniting at the Cinnabon in Northgate Mall a couple years ago, it was clearly a massive joke. And yet, ever since then, events have slowly creeped towards a reunion. Keeping my fingers crossed.

funk_dat | 10/7/2009, 5:52 pm EST

@ Muso

Matt Cameron is the full-time dummer for Pearl Jam now and has been for a few years.

Jeff | 10/7/2009, 5:55 pm EST

How much did Chris Cornell look like Howard Stern when he walked out? But that was greatness!

SD | 10/7/2009, 6:26 pm EST

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark | 10/7/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/Alice In Chains Summer tour 2010.
PLEASE.

Kristy | 10/7/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Exactly like Howard Stern…crazy.

Jon | 10/7/2009, 6:47 pm EST

Was at the show last night, it was F*&#$(@ Great! My ears are still ringing!

TOM | 10/7/2009, 6:51 pm EST

I’d rather prefer a Temple reunion. I think Soundgarden is just logistically impossible at this point with Susan Silver as their manager and Chris’ ex-wife/stalker.

Eddie V. | 10/7/2009, 6:59 pm EST

Don’t forget our good friend, Ben Harper, rocked out with us last night on Red Mosquito as well!

alex | 10/7/2009, 7:12 pm EST

idont think a pj/soundgarden/alc tour would happen because that would mean matt cameron would have to play a full set with pj and then another one with soundgarden.
but it would still be awesome if by some miracle it happened.
and that would mean there would probably be a couple temple of the dog songs at every concert too cuz cornell would be there

90's were a farse. | 10/7/2009, 8:05 pm EST

So did Justin Timbarlake was there too or just Pearl Jam TV crew?

90S WERE A FARSE. | 10/7/2009, 8:42 pm EST

To the guy that say that grunge was the last great movement in American music:

Billy Corgan ended up trashing his fans because he din’t make it to Billboard top 10 no more.

Chris Cornell ended up making a album with Justin Timbarlake, the guy from Insync, INSYNC!!!

Smashing Pumkins did a album with Hanson, HANSON!!

Pearl Jam just did a incredible trendy Target comercial, selling out to my mom favorite store, TARGET!!!

What’s next? Trent Reznor doing the Hollywood red carpets with a goldigger?…wait.

Grunge was the last great movement in American music???

Do you think generations to come will agree with you?

Right.

Raleigh | 10/7/2009, 8:58 pm EST

I was there last night and the show was unreal, start to finish. Best money I have spent on a concert ticket in a long time. Wish I was going back tonight.

Franklin | 10/7/2009, 8:59 pm EST

“Grunge was the last great movement in American music”

You haven’t been to Denton, TX, have you…

Matt | 10/7/2009, 9:43 pm EST

Maybe this will remind Cornell what good music sounds like. I loved the guy from the early days of soundgarden until the last Audioslave album. But his recent solo stuff is so terrible, it’s enough to make a fan lose faith.

Nick | 10/7/2009, 10:55 pm EST

This is freakin’ amazing,..90’s all the way

KAD | 10/7/2009, 11:02 pm EST

Dream come true

glenn | 10/7/2009, 11:36 pm EST

man, when cornell lets it rip it is awesome. I got chills

Topher | 10/8/2009, 12:10 am EST

Why couldn’t they’ve done this a couple weeks ago in Seattle?!!

@funk_dat

Matt Cameron’s been their drummer for more than a few years, try since 1998.

Andy | 10/8/2009, 12:16 am EST

I was at the show last night and it was amazing. Eddie did a really cool “duel” with the string accompaniement with a super sped up version of Lukin. Cantrell ripped so hard on the “Alive” solo!

Hunter | 10/8/2009, 12:52 am EST

Cantrell is pretty good.
McCready is better.

DMG | 10/8/2009, 1:02 am EST

While it is a bold statement, I think this band is actually at the top of its game right now.

... | 10/8/2009, 1:13 am EST

well i hope that was the video flakin out on me because that looked like the worst lip sync job ive ever seen. vedder and cornell are totally away from their mikes when they are “singing”. hope im wrong or that was worse than milli vanili

LOL! | 10/8/2009, 1:15 am EST

So “alternative” fans just ignore the way this bands took their original values and ideas and trow them out the door.

Even the materialistic and selfish 80’s generation was more honest and pure. The grungers were a bunch of hipocrists that sold theirs souls worse then the hippies.

I just show this video to my 15 year old brother and his reaction was:

“The guy from the Target comercial is singing with the rocker who did that album with Timbaland and Justin Timbarlake”

There you go, grunge was great, right.

Ashkorsair | 10/8/2009, 4:33 am EST

oh my god!
i wish is was there.
this kinda thing never happens in european gigs.:(

Anonymous | 10/8/2009, 8:26 am EST

RU people who are bashing Pearl Jam just ignorant or do you just have a small mental capacity? I mean really? The Target deal is one of the most “indie” things they have done in a while if you think about it. All of the other “big box” stores would not let them sell the album on their website or at local record stores so the logical choice was target! if you had as many fans as Pearl Jam you would realize that getting your music into their hands would be something necessary to keep moving forward so stop bitching about them you idiots… and RRIIIIGGGHHHT lip sync dude, you are pathetic, they are not freaking ashley simpson, these guys are two of the most talented singers of the past two decades so show a little respect to people who actually have talent…

Jim | 10/8/2009, 8:47 am EST

‘Alive’ is the solo I wanna hear note-for-note. Throw Cantrell in for something else next time. Wank away all you want on Rockin’ in the Free World.

Seabass | 10/8/2009, 8:59 am EST

I wonder what would happen if they lost matt to a soundgarden reunion…..maybe they should get dave abbruzzese back, but thats almost impossible

Chuckio | 10/8/2009, 9:16 am EST

Surprised he can still sing a rock song after the pop crap he’s been putting out lately.

John | 10/8/2009, 10:52 am EST

I miss the 80’s.

Eddie V. | 10/8/2009, 11:22 am EST

Chris and I are in the planning stage of a “Big 4″ tour. Much like the rumored metal one with Megadeth and Metallica, this one would consist of PJ, AIC, Soundgarden and we’re thinking Nirvana. Obviously the Nirvana one would be questionable for obvious reasons. That would be up to Dave and Krist and if they would want to do it and are free. We do have alternative plans such as another (un-named) Seattle band or making it a big 3 instead. Stay tuned.

Lorenzo99 | 10/8/2009, 11:48 am EST

This should not surprise anyone. sadly LA got the show vs. Seattle
oh well good guys all around. Ben Sheppard is a 1/2 crazy lovable dude. good on ya!

Robyn H. | 10/8/2009, 11:57 am EST

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, AIC, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, etc… are some of the best bands ever. I never even listening to the radio here because its nothing but crap. I continue to turn on people to these bands who have never heard of them because they think what is played on the radio is “cool” because that is what the media tells them is “thing to listen to”. UGH!

Jungleland2 | 10/8/2009, 11:59 am EST

Peal Jam, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden are the new classic rock..that’s not a slam…think of them the way you thought of Led Zeppelin or the Who when you played them in the 1980’s (as I’m sure the bands themselves did)

Get ready for the 1990’s bands to be out in full force touring over the next few years on the nostalgia tours. Hopefully since PJ and AIC have strong new records this will not be JUST nostalgia

Soundgarden would be wise to do a tour and a record while their audience is still hungry for their music

jordy | 10/8/2009, 12:48 pm EST

To the band members, think about it. PJ/Soundgarden/AIC triple bill!!! C’mon guys, you are all good friends to each other from way back, right? Do this thing in 2010 and all of your fans will be happy. Although hitting Canada with this triple bill maybe too much to ask for…

zbtrocker | 10/8/2009, 12:57 pm EST

Chris Cornell’s album was produced by Timbaland, not Justin Timberlake. If you’re going to bash something/someone, then get your facts straight. Otherwise all you do is just show people how stupid you are.

you are an idiot on 3 levels.
1 – its nsync…not insync
2 – it was just james iha that did the album…which was a decent album
3 – you are obviously an 80’s metal fan…so please go watch your def leppard and strangle yourself with your spandex

Michael | 10/8/2009, 1:51 pm EST

This is just awesome.

Zoomonkey | 10/8/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Pearl Jam is definately not nostalgia. They have been compared to the Grateful Dead and for good reason. They have thousands of fans that have followed them from Ten until Backspacer. It seems the people that don’t understand that are the ones that think VS. was Pearl Jam’s last great album. These guys have been rocking it year after year for their fans. People don’t realize this because they don’t get much radio airplay. All I can say is all doubters need to attend a PJ concert.

MB | 10/8/2009, 2:52 pm EST

I love how people call Pearl Jam sell outs because they went through Target. HAHA You people really need to get a life. No matter what they do, you always have to find something to complain about. How about the fact that the just came out with a great rock record and the fact that they are bringing Chris Cornell and Jerry Cantrell back onto the stage to remind everyone that they are still around and anything can happen and will! Rock out PJ!

PJ and the Garden | 10/8/2009, 2:54 pm EST

If I was epyleptic I’d have had a freakin seizure!!! If not from the lights than from all that grunge on one stage at the same time. Its like the grunge version of the M13 festival!! CAN’T WAIT TO SEE PJ all four shows in Philly, BACKSTAGE!!!

mmd | 10/8/2009, 3:22 pm EST

That was awesome. Chris Cornell sounded amazing.

Rocha | 10/8/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Any chance that Eddie V. really is Eddie V. and not just some dude fucking with my emotions?

andy | 10/8/2009, 4:01 pm EST

no

pearl jam/soundgarden/temple of the dog tour would be more than enough. no need for a fake alice in chains

PV | 10/8/2009, 4:42 pm EST

It was such an awesome show! TOTD reunion and JC onstage during “Alive” were a great treat! I was fortunate enough to meet Jerry backstage after the show along with AIC singer William DuVall. Great guys!

we need a seattle band tour | 10/8/2009, 6:19 pm EST

bring out everyone who’s still kicking!

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, and maybe Candlebox (kind of a Seattle band)

That would be one of the greatest tours ever.

The new Alice in Chains lineup is great and they did it the right way where it isn’t offensive to the memory of Layne Staley. Cantrell was about 75% of that band anyway, so it works.

Obviously any sort of Nirvana based band probably wouldn’t work considering Cobain was the only singer/guitarist/songwriter… Although a Grohl fronted “tribute” band could be interesting.

No PJ/Soundgarden/Etc Tour | 10/8/2009, 6:42 pm EST

That would just cut into PJ’s set. None of us want or need that.

It’d be better to see the other bands play as headliners anyways.

Emily | 10/8/2009, 6:44 pm EST

It was all wonderful.

You wouldn’t like it when i get angry …

Weegie | 10/9/2009, 1:17 am EST

Hunger Strike was the only semi Pearl Jam song that ever really caaught my ear. Maybe they hired the wrong new singer all those years ago ;)

TOMMY | 10/9/2009, 1:43 am EST

end this argument thread..
temple of the dog are awesome..
so glad that this happened! please release this album remastered already!

Mark A. | 10/9/2009, 3:01 am EST

After Grunge became a true musical breakout and people genuinely responded by propelling these artists popularity, it formed a new business model for the music industry to follow and MARKET 2nd and 3rd rate groups riding thewave of this explosion. It was the impact of punk rock all over again. Nothing or any musical genre came close to making a real impact as great as this (with the exception of mainstream hip hop) since then. It has mostly been marketing and tastemaking. The pitiful word Grunge changed the game. These bands were and are authentic like it or not.

TJ | 10/9/2009, 3:23 am EST

please come back. a megatour.

Yep | 10/9/2009, 6:58 am EST

To the guy who posted that his brother knows PJ only because of the Target commercial, this I say to you. “I pity your brother”. I hope one day, he tries to listen to one of the greatest bands of all time, before they call it quits, like the other bands before them. LONG LIVE PEARL JAM… Thanks for the music. :)

The Dude | 10/9/2009, 10:35 am EST

Wow!

Fact Pearl jam | 10/9/2009, 1:40 pm EST

To the guy that posted that he pity the brother of another poster because he knows PJ just for the Target comercial, I pity you for suporting a band of washed out grungers that sell out bigger then Britney Spears and Lil Wayne on MTV, cause atleast this fools want to be POP comercial stars and they don’t preach about been against the industry, been against comercialsm or been against television.

Target the top 3 monopoly chains in America. So “alternative”, right?

Something's Gotta Come of This | 10/9/2009, 5:51 pm EST

I’m a little skeptical regarding Cornell’s range at the moment but this was something that I would’ve given one of my nuts (or a manboob) to see in person.

Jeff Jones Murrells Inlet, SC | 10/9/2009, 10:40 pm EST

I was lucky enough to see pj in Columbia, SC. That was the third time I saw them. The longevity of the band is mind blowing. A great memorie I have is seeing PJ performing with Ben Harper, I will never forget it. To the band thank you for communication and expression of your music. Fan since day 1

To: Fact Pearl Jam | 10/10/2009, 3:55 am EST

Please learn how to spell, speak, and check facts about the Target deal before you accuse Pearl Jam of trying to be pop stars and selling out.

Anonymous | 10/10/2009, 10:18 am EST

Pearl Jam bashers please stop blogging and get a life. Pearl Jam have never sold out, read up on their history. It’s all for their fans.

Anonymous | 10/10/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Pear Jam is the best American band and the Seattle explosion was the best rock era of the last 30 years!!!
Pearl Jam haters so just gft and listen to any hiphop shit!

Sounds like a good show. Pearl Jam and Temple of the Doggy Bag.

THE 90'S ARE SO DATED. | 10/12/2009, 1:08 am EST

Pearl Jam doing Target comercials.

Chris Cornell doing songs with Justin Timbarlake.

Smashing Pumkins doing albums with Hanson.

Greenday doing Broadway shows.

Courtney Love…well we all know how that ended.

The 90’s fail hard, hipocrists ready to sell their souls just to be down with the new generation.

Target? Really? so alternative, right.

A Fan | 10/12/2009, 11:15 am EST

Ediie and PJ are always so energetic live, and they always get the best people to jam with, but I must say, seeing Eddie by himself was stunning. Great voice, great writer, good dude.

GA | 10/12/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Hey, “90’s Are So Dated” – Do you know:

- That all the previous 8 PJ albums were sold via SONY through Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Sam Goody, etc – it’s just that they now are now kicking OUT Walmart/Best Buy and others and selling it themselves without Sony’s help? So, they are actually now working with LESS corporations than EVER have. So, if they are selling out now, than they were selling out 10x as much back in the 90’s. What’s your answer to that? Don’t have any do you?

FU 90's haters | 10/12/2009, 6:04 pm EST

You people trying to bash the 90’s music are so pathetic. U take one little fact and twist it into a complete lie. James Iha who worked with Hanson, NOT SP, one person does not equal a band, especialy when it is not the lead songwriter. Pearl Jam didn’t sell out to Target, like someone said they are selling through even less organizations. The only thing i’ll give you is Chris Cornell doing that album with Timberland. Still, get a life, stop trolling around on comment sections for stuff you apparently hate anyway.

90's are sooo dated! | 10/12/2009, 7:35 pm EST

Hey GA:

So this means they allow Target logos all over their publicity. Finally I get it.

Like the Pepsi Michael Jackson comercials or the Christina Aguilera Revlon ads, they sell their music to play with the products.

The very values that Eddie Vedder promoted back on the golden age of “alternative” music, when grungers trashed the 80’s acts for selling out, right?

What’s your answer to that? Don’t have any do you?

Outshined limowreck | 10/12/2009, 10:21 pm EST

Oh yeahhhhh!!!!

GA | 10/12/2009, 11:01 pm EST

My answer to that is:

Michael Jackson and C. Aguilera were selling and promoting Pepsi and Revlon. They pitched it, supported, and the ad was for the physical corporate products of Pepsi and Revlon.

Now, look at the Target commercial, what is it selling? Oh, the MUSIC by Pearl Jam. Get that? Like, I don’t object to the U2 blackberry ad either, b/c it is Blackberry promoting U2, instead of the other way around. It takes a little bit of sophistication, rather than, “Target is bad, they sold out.”

Now, the use of the logo, I’ll give you that. Vedder stupidly bashed not playing under logos in the past, and he’s had to rethink that, and he should be called out on it.

Now, I answered your question, why can’t you have some balls to answer mine?

BD | 10/12/2009, 11:43 pm EST

PJ kick ass
Cornell Kicks Ass
AIC kick Ass

Put them together……Too good.

Soundgarden Reunion/Grunge Tour 2010 would best the best year of my life and many other.
PJ always does what is best for their fans. Look at the ticketmaster deal. Doing target commercials isn’t taboo. Screw everyone who thinks otherwise. These guys are as good musically today as ever. They just don’t rock as hard as in jumping around on stage like drunkin idiots of their past.
GOOD SHIT.

Jordan | 10/13/2009, 5:09 am EST

Man I love grunge! I so hope Soundgarden get back together mainly. Oh, to the guy bashing PJ for the Target thing, I for one couldn’t care less! For me it’s about the music, so yes, the 90’s was a golden age compared to the shit we’re forced to hear nowadays. I mean, if you don’t even like this music then why are you here? I don’t want to imagine what you must listen to…Well anyway, bring back the 90’s!

Dee | 10/13/2009, 2:43 pm EST

Seriously, wow. As for this rumored Soundgarden/Pearl Jam/Alice in Chains tour: That would be the concert to end all concerts. Just make sure to have HURT open (I saw them with AIC, and have been a junkie for their music ever since). There hasn’t been a band, or any music to come out that could compare to PJ/SG/AIC aside from Thornley and Hurt. I’ll keep praying like the rest of you for the “tour to end all tours”!

Cheesecrop | 10/14/2009, 7:43 am EST

I love the guy who bashes the 90’s for allegedly “selling out”. Every decade has started out wanting to hold up some sort of “ethic”, only to surrender over to corporate America when the the generation moves on.

60″s – Beatles ended up w/Nike, Stones w/Microsoft,

70’s – Zeppelin w/a car line (forget what “ROCK & ROLL” was supposed to be selling), Elton John ended up doing the “Lion King” for Broadway.

And the 80’s? – Madonna (no need to elaborate), Bon Jovi hires Britney’s producers, then goes country later on, countless metal singers w/”reality” shows

Your arguments hold no weight. It’s been happening long before the 90’s, & it will go on long after the 90’s. Remember, the 60’s & 70’s claimed the same kind of ethics you are trying to hold the 90’s to. It’s the nature of rock & roll and it’s audiences.

Done with RS | 10/15/2009, 10:47 am EST

I like how not only are 90% of the pictures are of Chris but that 24 of 24 is an ad. Way to keep it real RS!

Astounded | 10/15/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Did NO ONE notice that Eddie Vedder not only posted (twice that I saw), but shared some pretty interesting intel on some seriously talent-packed musical collaborative efforts currently underway for the benefit of music lovers (and quite possibly charity) in the near future?

People, some perspective, PLEASE! Musicians gotta eat, too. If Target helps pay their bills and gets us our music in an affordable and timely fashion, so be it. Far worse happens daily . . .

DJ GrapeDrank | 10/16/2009, 4:32 pm EST

I was at this show, and the place went bonkers….the TOTD song was a real treat, considering I had traveled from New Orleans to see those two L.A. shows last week.

The second night was an even BETTER show, with Jerry C coming out for a song again, and Ben Harper sitting in with the band on “Red Mosquito” and ending the show dueting with Eddie on “Indifference”.

Add that to Perry Farrell coming out in Austin to sing JA’s “Mountain Jam” with Pearl Jam, and that is one sick string of 3 shows that I was priviledged enough to see…

After nearly 20 years of preforming, 9 consecutive major label albums, more live concert atendence than any body but the greatful dead, over 10 apperances in motion picture soundtracks, over 65 million albums sold world wide, not concidering the pleathera of patron based activities this band has done for the concert goers, and the fact that they do more for charitable philantrapy than any other band ever (yes including U2) not to mention the progressive equal rights agenda that there lyrics so eloquently state in a poetic form second only to Bob Dylan himself (only sung with an amazing vibrato) it puzzels me that any one could see this band as any thing but the greatist american rock and roll band ever. This is not about a popularity contest if given one hour with me, a kick as stereo and the pj collection I have been able to change the biggist skeptics around finding sorrow in the fact that they wasted the last 15 years of ther lives missing what they have newly discoverd. They are incredibly versital (name a band who can play more diffrent genras) Inteligent in lyrics and buissnies savy and happen to have one of the most talented guitar players in the world. for your sake forget about 10 and try them again. Belive me they have grown. Please tell me Fact Pearl Jam, how do you propose they distribute the million plus albums that Target purchased from them. Do you have a distribution firm you fucking idiot. get the fuck of this thread.
