The Big News: With several big-name female artists competing for Number One, Barbra Streisand pulled out a stunning victory to claim the top spot of the Billboard Top 200 as a last minute surge helped Love Is the Answer sell 180,000 copies, according to Neilsen SoundScan. Early predictions had Paramore’s Brand New Eyes claiming victory this week, but when the last barcode was swiped, Hayley Williams and company finished at Number Two with 175,000 copies. Mariah Carey had to settle for Number Three as Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel pushed 168,000 units.

It was Streisand’s first Number One album since 1997’s Higher Ground, while Paramore improved greatly on Riot!’s Number 20 debut in 2007. Things weren’t as pleasant for Carey, however: After 2008’s E=MC2 gave the diva the best first-week sales of her career with 463,000 copies, Carey’s oft-delayed Memoirs came crashing back to normalcy with only 168K. In fact, E=MC2 sold more copies in its second week (182,000) than Memoirs sold in its debut.

In all, the entire Top Five was made up of debuts breaking the 100K threshold, as Breaking Benjamin’s Dear Agony and Alice in Chains’ first album in 14 years Black Gives Way to Blue sold 134,000 and 126,000 copies respectively.

Debuts: You know it’s a competitive sales week when Madonna only manages to enter the charts at Number Seven, where the Material Girl’s greatest-hits compilation Celebration landed in its first week by selling 72,000, beating out both Miranda Lambert’s Revolution (Eight) and Selena Gomez & the Scene’s Kiss and Tell (Nine.) Other notable rookies include AFI’s Crash Love at 12 with 52,000 copies, the Avett Brother’s I And Love And You at 16, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Gods & Guns at 18 and Ghostface Killah’s Ghostdini: The Wizard of Poetry at 28.

Last Week’s Heroes: With the major influx of new releases, there was lots of shakeup in the Top 10, with Pearl Jam’s Backspacer falling from Number One to Number 10 in the span of seven days. A trio of albums that have ruled the upper echelon of the charts the past month — Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3, Miley Cyrus’ Time of Our Lives EP and Whitney Houston’s I Look to You — all found themselves out of the Top Five for the first time, landing at Six, 11 and 13.

Next week, we’ll see if this all-star pack of divas can fight off the Kiss Army as Sonic Boom hit Walmart shelves yesterday.

Who are the morons chosing Breaking Benjamin’s over Alice in Chains? The real thing vs a corporate clone.

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Congrats Babs!

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 12:06 pm EST

sorry sickman, Alice In Chains 2009 are nothing but a tribute band.

luis | 10/7/2009, 12:24 pm EST

alice in chains is the best of those bands

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 12:39 pm EST

Barbara Streisand beat Paramore?! For real?! Just goes to show we should never underestimate the buying power of mass quantities of people with more money to blow than taste to know what to spend it on.

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I’m don’t follow any of the three performers, but I don’t suppose this would have anything to do with Streisand’s audience and their inability to obtain music illegally, would it?

Michael | 10/7/2009, 1:04 pm EST

It’s a shame Whitney Houston doesn’t have a hit single on her latest album and promotion in the US in the past few weeks has been next to nothing with little airplay. I really wanted her to have a REAL comeback, and now it looks like winning a Grammy is a real longshot, even in the Best R&B album category (Maxwell may take that from Whitney). But good for Babs, she is truly a legend who all the Miley/Rihanna kiddies need to take a listen to!

ray | 10/7/2009, 1:09 pm EST

Barbra timeless iconic status is once again proven. I may be wrong, most of her albums are either gold or multipatinum. As a young person, I discovered Barbra when a friend gave me three of Barbra’s CDs as gift and I find her multi dimensional artist. She can do everything and very pleasant to the ears. She has the most glorious voice. Congrats Babs.

Schultz | 10/7/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Anonymous – who are AIC tributing? Your ignorant comments all over this site should be left for the playground. Own up and use your name if you are just going bash every band/person out here.

Brandon | 10/7/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Let’s see. Barbra is the number 1 selling female artist in the US, before people were even able to get songs off the internet. So much for your theory. She has had number one albums in the last 5 decades….hmmmmm before the general public even had computers.
I guess a lot of people must enjoy her recordings….

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Alice In Chains has become an Alice In Chains tribute band.

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 3:45 pm EST

No Brandon u really don’t get it the younger generation is going 2 download mariah’s album and paramore’s, they aren’t even thinking of Barbra . Barbra’s fans-ppl like my mother-have no idea how 2 get/pirate CDs off the internet so they buy them. I truly believe internet has made a huge influence on the music industry… Um not downing Barb she’s been in my home since I was a child… Just making a reservation…

Angela | 10/7/2009, 3:54 pm EST

im glad carry didn’t grab number two (i think she is crazy). Barbra is a beast! she is old but going strong. I think Paramore’s bne would been number one or at least very very close if teens did not illegally download the album. haha

Siep | 10/7/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Streisand truly deserves this moment in the spotlight.
She’s released an absolute stunning collection of songs!!

Mylie Cyrus rocks! | 10/7/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Hahah! I kinda knew good ol’ Babs would top everyone in thew United States. Poor Mariah tho, talk about a bad break! She couldn’t even top the charts anywhere else in the world either. While Madonna debuted at a strong 7 (come on, it’s a greatest hits album BTW). Hard Candy sold a solid 280,000 copies last year. So if this was a new album by Madonna, i’m sure it would have sold very well and landed her another #1. But back to the issue, Madonna is #1 in: Europe, Japan, Canada…and top ten or top five everywhere else…Plus Celebration has already sold over 3 million copes worldwide. But Barbra Streisand definitely did it. Poor Mariah…back to the drawing board, defeated by Paramour!

SBB | 10/7/2009, 4:08 pm EST

I agree. No disrespect to Barbara; she’s awesome and deserves every #1 she gets. But a huge percentage of the younger crowd (not die-hard fans) is going to download Paramore’s and Mariah’s stuff illegally, or copy it from their friends, or record it from free streaming sites. Whereas Barbara’s older generation fans (including those that are NOT diehard fans) are going to buy it. Read other articles on this, a huge part of Barbara’s sales were from QVC. Another thing hurting Mariah was the content of her album. It didn’t appeal at all to the non-typical Mariah buyers like her last two.

anon | 10/7/2009, 4:34 pm EST

Alice In Chains is a cover band-forget them

zbtrocker | 10/7/2009, 4:38 pm EST

AIC should’ve topped them all.

greekguy | 10/7/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Barbra made a great album and deserves the #1 position. Her record speaks for itself. She consistently makes good music. I also bought Mariah’s album, it’s one of the worst of her career. Madonna’s is a greatest hits, of course its not going to do as well.

Barbra is a living legend and the album is spectular. And yes her fans legitimately bought it, what’s wrong with that?

homegirl | 10/7/2009, 7:59 pm EST

Barbra Streisand is the greatest female vocalist to ever hold a microphone. LITA is a superb collection and is truly one of her best efforts…after a very long drought, in my opinion. Her first #1 album on Billboard goes back 45 years. Amazing!

Brandon | 10/7/2009, 9:58 pm EST

paramore, so proud they made it! :) )

Cb | 10/8/2009, 12:28 am EST

Michael | 10/7/2009, 1:04 pm EST

“It’s a shame Whitney Houston doesn’t have a hit single on her latest album…”

I dont know how you define hit single. Her singles did well on the R&B charts. They arent really pop songs and are confined to urban radio. The album has sold almost 1 million copies worlwide in about a months time. In a climate where records dont sell like they used to, thats pretty good. Her first week sales were also better than Mariah and Barbra.
In terms of the grammy, I suspect she will get several nominations.
I think people were expecting sales like the Whitney of 25 years ago, this was a totally unrealistic expectation. The main thing is that Whitney is back in the game, she’s healthy and we can expect more albums in the future.
She also has a great album and a fan base that will always stay with her.

Grunge is so dead. | 10/8/2009, 1:27 am EST

Atleast Alice Chains aren’t doing Target commercials, like the pathethic Pearl jam.

Babs fan FOREVER | 10/8/2009, 3:23 am EST

I knew Barbra could do it! She is still the one to beat! AND THANK YOU! Love ya Barb!

ROGER | 10/8/2009, 10:09 am EST

STREISAND IS A LEGEND-LIKE SINATRA, SHE IS THE STANDARD BY WHICH OTHERS ARE MEASURED. GOOD FOR HER. NOW MAYBE ROLLING STONE WILL GET AN INTERVIEW AND PROFILE THIS EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN.

bizarro | 10/8/2009, 11:20 am EST

Not to affend anyone, but I think the general population of Streisand fans are a little bit older and don’t know how to steal music off the internet while Paramore fans are well versed in the process.

Mark64 | 10/8/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Now I understand why Barbara is #1; you can’t match an album where the instruments are the accompaniment to the voice v.s. an over produced one where the voice gets lost(Mariah/Whitney).

Adam Lambert | 10/8/2009, 1:43 pm EST

It was me.

I bought all the Steisand albums.

Anonymous | 10/8/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Next week the KISS ARMY will rule!!!

mike | 10/8/2009, 5:21 pm EST

i agree…Alice In Chains 2009 is a good band but its not alice in chains…Jerry cantrell toured with all these guys under his solo career and it failed and he was dropped by 2 labels..so alas , he brings the name back and gets a new singer who it seems only co sings every song with jerry.

Larry Manalo | 10/8/2009, 9:37 pm EST

Let’s face it, Barbra Streisand possess the most unique and brilliant voice until now…c”,)

nads | 10/9/2009, 7:14 am EST

Whitney forever!!! she oozes star power with her presence!

B-rad | 10/9/2009, 12:53 pm EST

Well deserved Barbra. Hopefully RS will finally review your album and give you the recognition you deserve. A new generation of ppl need to hear your voice and understand your contribution to american pop culture. Keep it up, looking forward to The Little Fockers!
BTW – What’s up Doc is an underrated comedic classic – can’t stop watching it!

Howad | 10/9/2009, 1:14 pm EST

RS review Love is the Answer and give Streisand (and Krall) the recognition they deserve? Ha, that’ll be the day. RS doesn’t know HOW to review people like Sinatra, Streisand, Tony Bennett.

Andrew | 10/9/2009, 2:06 pm EST

I just bought the new Madonna album today , hate she did not make it to #1 since it has 34 really great songs on it while the others are lucky to have 1 or 2 but at least that tramp Mariah failed to make it to #1. On the world chart Madonna is the #1 selling album in the entire world so I guess that is where it counts the most.

michael | 10/9/2009, 2:15 pm EST

I actually stopped reading RS long ago for its prejudice against artists like Streisand who proved this week for the 100th time, she’s way above all the mediocre talent RS is been promoting consistently through the years. Streisand’s album and its huge success just proves that people are still sane and legal. Let the rest steal trash from the interned. Thank you Ms Streisand.

Mary | 10/9/2009, 4:14 pm EST

‘The Voice’ strikes again.
Where’s her cover?

Jackie | 10/10/2009, 11:00 am EST

Yes, there is still something called talent AND class being paid attention to in the music industry.’Bout time !!

Jackie | 10/10/2009, 11:05 am EST

Not only that- Babs probably still smokes like a chimney, and manages to sound freakin’ great without vocal hystrionics. By the way, LOVE Paramore! Mariah…not so much…

BanjoKazzoie | 10/13/2009, 7:50 am EST

Have those of you slamming AIC listened to the album? Prolly not. And when you do, tell me what rock albums recently are better. Maybe Pearl Jam? That might be it.

louis | 10/24/2009, 8:48 am EST

Streisand is victorious!!! Grammy night will belong to her majesty. congratulations to the greatest entertainer of all time.

Eddie Steiger | 11/8/2009, 10:29 pm EST

Congratulations, Barbra! You more than deserve this recognition. A loiving legend keeps on going and to all those who don’t know how much you lasted through time; then this should prove it. keep it going!

Eddie Steiger | 11/8/2009, 10:30 pm EST

Congratulations, Barbra! You more than deserve this recognition. A living legend keeps on going and to all those who don’t know how much you lasted through time; then this should prove it. keep it going!

Jonathan Peterson | 11/10/2009, 3:59 am EST

Glad BB made it somewhere, the album could have been more experimental, but it was solid. A very personal record Benjamin dedicated to his late grandfather.

Dermot Anastas | 11/16/2009, 1:07 pm EST

After all the years of mindless music with people who cannot sing -Britney, Miley, Lady Gaga – It’s so awesome to have Barbra at number 1. We really don’t recognize talent anymore – and she is the last of the “real” talent. Now, It’s all MTV stuff with people using lip sync and all kinds of gadgets and crap – no voice is needed. She speaks out so people get upset – but, she had done more for woman and people than anyone I can think of. Thanks again Babs! We all love ya

MEGAN | 11/18/2009, 12:04 am EST

I am 19 years old and prefer Babs music and voice over anybody these days. its just her voice and a quartet for one cd and the other w/ a light orchestra. Mariah and whitney undoubtedly have beautiful voices as well. However, Mariah is disappointing me-she seems full of herself, especially in her videos!

If anyone isults Barbra’s cd I can only imagine it is b/c you are considerably closeminded and have allowed yourself to be fooled by over processed music these days. (not all the time tho!)
She is undoubtedly uncomparable and MORE ENTERTAINING THAN TODAYS ARTISTS! Mind you again I am 19 years old. And y even bring up that ppl are old and dont know how to steal music from the internet? That pisses me off. Horrible(yet i understand true) observation. I bought Love is The Answer. And ill have u know that Barbra has a huge audience that is young..the people who understand wonderful music that is meaningful and special, not superficial and abt sex and drugs. However, there are exceptions~
Barbra is a true artist and clearly a legend for all of her obvious accomplishments as an actress/singer/director/songwr iter/producer/etc! Go BABS for another wonderful album. Kisses, MEGGS
