Usher Opens Up About Divorce With New Song “Papers”

Usher’s new song “Papers,” from his upcoming album titled Monster or Raymond vs. Raymond depending on the source, was posted on the R&B singer’s official Website yesterday. Seemingly a near play-by-play account of the singer’s short-lived marriage and divorce from Tamika Foster, the track could be the most personal in Usher’s career, and that’s coming from an artist who had an album called Confessions five years ago.

Check out photos of Usher, onstage and off.

“I damn near lost my mama, I had been through so much drama that I turned into the man I never thought I’d be. I’m ready to sign those papers,” Usher sings with a hint of real-life regret as he encounters the divorce filings in the song. “Papers” was reportedly written by Zaytoven and Sean Garrett, who previously helped co-write Usher’s Confessions hit “Yeah.” As the producers told MTV in June, the song was actually written before Usher filed for divorce from Foster that same month. “I don’t know what Usher is going through, but Sean Garrett made a song about filling out papers, divorce papers. The beat, it’s got a bounce to it. It’s outta here,” Zaytoven said.

Neither the Usher page nor the Jive Music Website have announced any firm details regarding the singer’s sixth album, but several hip-hop sites are reporting that the disc will come out at some point in December. The title of the record remains unclear as well. Monster leaked out as a potential album name during the summer, but HHNM writes that Raymond vs. Raymond is fittingly now the frontrunner. “Papers” is the first track to officially be released by Usher after potential new album songs like “Be,” “Radar,” “Secrets” and the Neptunes-produced “Certified” leaked out.

Brian | 10/6/2009, 12:41 pm EST

This is the dumbest shit I ever read. Brian opens up about his breakfast on new song, “English Muffins.” Except I have no talent, other than laughing at the dorks who come to RS for “news.” I come here for the laughs and the dorks.

Dickbag | 10/6/2009, 12:48 pm EST

This guy is a self-indulgent tard. Who cares about a blow-by-blow account of your failed marriage? You probably sucked as a husband, because everything has to be about YOU! Usher’s not that great. Boring, boring, boring.

What class | 10/6/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Usher is a total asshole. Some stuff is meant to be private. His ex is always going to be his kid’s mother, yet he choses to embarrass her and air their dirty laundry to the world? She can’t even defend herself; she’s not in the limelight. What a classless asshole!

i dont know why these americans celebrities are taking marriage for?today one would marry and tomorrow divorce.its odd and bad especially after both parties have kids.what will be the future of their kids if parents are seperated?they should think properly before indulging getting married.

toote23 | 10/6/2009, 2:04 pm EST

Great song, but a recycled beat * yawn *, check out Gorilla Zoe’s “So Sick” (featured on his album released in March 2009).

lee | 10/6/2009, 7:23 pm EST

my heart goes out 2 both of them, divorce is no child’s play, does not matter who is right or wrong. the song is his way of dealing with the pain.,it does not make it right thou coz she is hurting too. everytime she hears it the healing process will have a set back. lets stop passing judgement, these r real people and the pain is real.

yall haterz

why is he a real man? | 10/7/2009, 9:18 am EST

because he cheats on his wife, then whines about his divorce in a song? loser!

BLESSED! | 10/7/2009, 12:45 pm EST

the song brings to life the reality of being with someone and wanting a good Marriage to work. He realizes that no matter how much he loves her. He must love himself first. You can not be to someone else what you have not been to yourself. Marriage is “Hard Work” You give up the “I” for “WE”.

Mrs Raymond is in the limelight. She can defend herself if she had something to say. She also a lot older than he is. She a mother of five she will be okay. I love the song. It makes me think about my situation. Thanks for the divorce song of 2009.

starrlrb | 10/7/2009, 7:08 pm EST

its real! its life !you have so so many people that are going through, they have given all that they have to give, and have loveed as hard as they have known to love, when you have done all you can, sometimes its for the best for you and the children.. and we all channel our pain, anger, and hurt differently.

Cookie | 10/8/2009, 5:25 am EST

He never should have married her in the first place.

sorriano | 10/8/2009, 5:45 pm EST

i think tis is just away he is expressing his pain(through his music). i dont think he is intentionally trying to hurt or embarass her. for the record i really think he should have stayed with chilli, they should get back together

James -Atlanta | 10/8/2009, 6:39 pm EST

I think the song is hot, it tells about the relationship. I really don’t think he bashed her like people think. Before you get on here talking about how much of a jerk he is, do something for me and listen to the damn song again. The man said, ” I can’t say that I don’t love her” He is just telling it like it is. I am married and we both get upset with each other and we both have slept in the other room so I really don’t know why people are making a big deal about this song. No one said anything about the confessions song. So people deal with it…

Good Luck Usher, I hope you listened to Kanye West when he said We Want Pre-Nup, We Want Pre-Nup Yeah. I Love Usher Raymond. Your #1 FAN

Denice in Germany | 10/12/2009, 2:36 am EST

The song is real! Everyone expresses feelings in different ways and it just so happen that he can in song. This song is someone’s testimony. It’s not mine but I love the song simply but it’s real.

Snads | 10/14/2009, 10:48 am EST

Leave Usher alone, he is hurting so that’s how he deals with it….Oh please, you know we all were thinking the same thing when he married her, she is older and has “baggage”, but in the end, I feel for those kids, poor babies… anyway Love me some Usher…

Veronica | 10/21/2009, 7:59 am EST

o.k I’m not married I’m 19 years old and my girl & I are thinking about getting married. I hope we can make it but then again listening to this song I’m thinkin…..I dont need to sign those papers.

Taylor | 11/1/2009, 4:10 am EST

It’s catchy but it’s generic. However, he’s singing about divorce and most artists don’t touch issuses like that. I think that this might be the first R&B divorce song ever. Interesting. As for the “he said/she said”: who cares; at least he didn’t physically pummel her like Chris Brown did to his ex. He expressed his feelings through song. Not really that bad.

..ARIAS.. | 11/11/2009, 10:34 am EST

hey I like the song, it isn’t nothing worng with it he just exspressing the way he feel. it’s just the tuth face it people. He still love her but he cant take it no more.
