New Reviews: Built to Spill, Gossip, Tokio Hotel and More

10/6/09, 5:03 pm EST

This week Built to Spill, the pride of Boise, Idaho, release their latest disc There Is No Enemy, the group’s first album since 2006’s You In Reverse. Fifteen years into their career, There is No Enemy proves frontman Doug Martsch is still an expert at building “a crystal palace of refracting guitar tones and textures,” Will Hermes writes in his three-and-a-half-star review. “What’s on Martsch’s mind? What you’d expect from a dude spending lots of time in his head: dreams, boredom, life’s meaning or lack thereof.” It’s not as perfect as Perfect From Now On, but fans that have stuck with the jangly noodlers won’t be disappointed.

RS was also a big fan of the Gossip’s Music For Men, awarding Beth Ditto and crew’s newest LP a four-star rating. The disc finds the trio trading in their punk grooves and transforming into a badass dance machine, thanks in large part to producer Rick Rubin, who is usually associated more with heavy metal and hip-hop than the club scene. Among the many highlights are “Men in Love” and the B-52s-inspired “Spare Me From the World.” “Punk purists may hate it,” writes Hermes in his Rolling Stone review, “But dance-floor revelers will drown them out.”

Also out this week: Tokio Hotel’s Humanoid, the disappointing follow-up to their English-language debut Scream. As Jody Rosen says in his Zwei-star review (that’s two for non-German speakers), Humanoid “is melodically anemic and strangely low-key.” Seemingly overnight, singer Bill Kaulitz has lost all the charisma that made Tokio Hotel one of Europe’s most popular bands.

Finally, a pair of discs worth checking out: Air’s Love 2 and the Very Best’s Warm Heart of Africa.

Melodically anemic? Low key? Get that man to an ENT, stat! It downloaded on my ITunes at 10:15 p.m last night and ran on repeat until 1:30 a.m., when I finally decided it was time to go bed so I wouldn’t be dead at work. Then I went to Best Buy at lunch today so I could get the German version. Kampf der Liebe will leave you quivering in your lederhosen.

LebLiebeRock | 10/6/2009, 5:51 pm EST

You know, it’s a good thing that I, and other people, are allowed to have our own opinions. Because if we didn’t Tokio Hotel’s Humanoid wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is. Shocking, I know, that some of us might actually LIKE this album. I personally LOVE it.

intheparkinglot | 10/6/2009, 5:54 pm EST

I disagree 100% with what was said about Tokio Hotel. Humanoid is such a huge step forward to the band, and anyone that listened to Scream and Humanoid should definitely be able to tell in which album is the better one. The guys worked for a year + on Humanoid, and all that work did not result in a shitty album. It has got to be one of the best I’ve ever heard.

Destati | 10/6/2009, 6:04 pm EST

I beg to differ about Tokio Hotel’s Humanoid. It’s not lacking in any way shape or form. The band is at an experimental point in their career, but they’ve done well in continually feeding their energy to us through their music. It’s a shame that you happened to miss it.

JK | 10/6/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Was that supposed to be an album review, The Tokio Hotel’s Humanoid review?

Whoever hired this I.D.I.O.T to do album reviews should fire him ASAP!

Humanoid is an amazing album! And Bill Kaulitz is the most charismatic person in the world!

Bradley James | 10/6/2009, 6:20 pm EST

Just face it – Tokio Hotel are a crappy band. Let it go. :)

RL | 10/6/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Alright people, relax. You know how you’re entitled to your own opinion? Well, believe it or not, but it actually works the same way for the writer.

Shocking, I know.

Beg To Disagree | 10/6/2009, 6:39 pm EST

I don’t typically comment, as an opinion is an opinion and all that jazz. But I’m compelled to join the chorus of dissenters about Tokio Hotel’s Humanoid.

Love the album and purchased it today after a full listen. And, for the record, I’m not even a fan and do not own another TH album.

On the glass half full side of the equation, based on this RS review, I think I’ll now need to give Scream a more careful look-see-hear!

Thanks for the tip. :-)

Francis Parker | 10/6/2009, 7:34 pm EST

Just for the record, I am a bored, middle-aged man who never heard of them before, has no clue what the 15-year old girls are into, live on a ranch outside of Big Tuna, TX, don’t listen to music all that much and dont really form opinions about anything – and even *I* like them!

Michele | 10/6/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Low-key is the last phrase I’d use to describe Humanoid. Did the reviewer actually listen to the CD? There are a handful of slower songs but most are very uptempo. And besides that, the CD is great. Bill still has all of the charisma in the world.

LS | 10/6/2009, 8:04 pm EST

Tokoyo Hotel is not a band they’re a fashion experiment gon wrong. It’s like an updated male version of the Spice Girls.

N | 10/6/2009, 8:29 pm EST

I have to disagree with this so called review. I absolutly think that this album is so much better then Scream, which was good, just not as good as Humanoid. I love the fact that they took a risk and changed their sound. Some were misses, but I think that the majority of the songs are fantastic!

MallorySpaz | 10/6/2009, 9:29 pm EST

You must have listened to a different ‘Humanoid’ album than I did. The one I listened to was a phenomenal step in a different direction. I’m sorry you aren’t able to appreciate true art.

Diego | 10/6/2009, 11:42 pm EST

What a lousy writer with no credibilty. I think he personally doesn’t like Tokio Hotel and probably didn’t bother to listen to the whole album based on his inaccurate review.

total disagreement | 10/7/2009, 12:07 am EST

The album is amazing, full of meaning & soul. Great production and creativity.

? | 10/7/2009, 1:05 am EST

You work for the same magazine that gave Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” a zero, right? Street Cred, you need some.

Katie | 10/7/2009, 2:00 am EST

I disagree 100% with the review of Tokio Hotel’s new album Humanoid! This is the best album I have heard in a VERY long time. Each song brings out such a different emotion from the listener. This album takes the listener from crying to dancing to screaming and moshing. That is the definition of an outstanding album. This reviewer is going to be eating their words!

FanGirl3 | 10/7/2009, 2:23 am EST

I thought Bill & the Boys did a terrific job on this new cd. The growth from Scream is amazing. Cannot wait for the next. In the Tokio Hotel corner, probably, forever.

Kris | 10/7/2009, 1:14 pm EST

That’s just a stupid review from this person Jody Rosen about Humanoid from Tokio Hotel. What is going on? Humanoid is awesome. The songs are catchy.
She just complained about Bill’s look. WTF? Have she really listened to the album? I can’t believe so.
I’m very disappointed with this poor review. There is no need to like the new album, but at least do a decent review about it, and not just some superficial hater statement.

Anais | 10/7/2009, 1:32 pm EST

I think the new album was awesome and i know other fans do too….
YOu guys can say all you want and we wouldn’t give a damn about what you people think about it! I STILL LOVE YOUR MUSIC AND YOU WILL GO FAR WITH OR WITHOUT GOOD CRITICS FROM REVIEWS! ;) All that counts are your fans that support you :)
KEEP ROCK’N

nancy | 10/7/2009, 2:18 pm EST

IM SORRY but HUMANOID ROCKS..seriously this album is GOOD every song is awesome..so dont judge a book by its cover..fyi BILL KAULITZ ROCKS..his voice is AMAZING he has NOT lost his touch..i been a tokio hotel fan since 06 and trust me I AM NOT disappointed AT ALL..HUMANOID ROCKS

Veda | 10/7/2009, 2:51 pm EST

i personally don’t care about what any one has to say about the album. TH fans know it rocks, and they bought it. that idiot is free to state his opinion…and he can do so while i blast Humanaiod.

pau x | 10/7/2009, 3:11 pm EST

okeey.. really shit review! i mean, humanoid AIN’T ‘disappointing’ as they call it e.e’ IT RULES. and tbh, TH get’s bettah with each album so chyeaahh! fuck the haterz. :D

Yessi | 10/7/2009, 6:01 pm EST

I dont know about that. I, myself have the CD in both languages & I completely LOVEEEEE ITTT

Vintage59 | 10/7/2009, 6:20 pm EST

I’m afraid Jody Rosen is sadly out of touch. Tokio Hotel fans have learned the hard way that any reviewer who mentions Bill Kaulitz’ hair (as Rosen did in his review) hasn’t spent more than 30 seconds actually listening to most of their songs even if they played the entire album. It’s not strictly an age thing. I know that because I am more than twice the age of the average Tokio Hotel fan.

It’s simply a matter of not pre-judging based on appearance. Their music touches the hearts of millions and Humanoid is no exception. That should be a clue that there is more here than meets the eye.

daniela | 10/7/2009, 7:05 pm EST

i totaly have to disagree witht his review. i got the album yesturday right after school and have been playing it ever sence because every time it just gets better and better:)

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 7:12 pm EST

I love the new tokio hotel album!

Porsche | 10/8/2009, 7:56 pm EST

If this AMAZING album is low-key for you, you must need to get you ears checked!! Humanoid has incredible up tempo and slow songs. A perfect blend of music. I have a feeling you dumbasses didn’t even listen to the whole thing!

Laura | 10/8/2009, 10:31 pm EST

Obviously people don’t know good music. I LOVE TOKIO HOTEL!!!! Humanoid album is AMAZING!!!! The band is experimenting with new things and they did an awesome job !!! GO TOKIO HOTEL !!! :)

Isabet | 10/9/2009, 10:55 am EST

I’d just like to preface this by saying I’m the kind of person who usually doesn’t lend my opinion on articles such as this, but I couldn’t stand it.
Right, so this person clearly did not listen to the whole album (maybe the intro to all the songs or something). They should hire someone who has taste in music.
I don’t mind if they didn’t like the album, but when you start going on about his ‘look’, your credibility goes down the drain.
If they think this is just a low key, boring album, they need to give a listen to “Kampf der Liebe”/”Pain of Love”, they should pay attention to the deeply emotional lyrics of “World Behind My Wall”, not to mention the rest of the amazing songs, and then try and say it was just mediocre.
And as for them saying that the album was “disappointing”, who did they poll for that opinion? I don’t know anyone who was the least bit disappointed.

liz | 10/9/2009, 4:59 pm EST

I definitely think this is an awesome cd… really like it :)

Rikki | 10/9/2009, 6:36 pm EST

Tokio Hotel’s CD is amazing. Critics should leave judging albums to true music fans!!

Cory | 10/9/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Wow, who wrote that article? That kind of thing can be expected and has been the norm for talented and very young artist. I am over the whole age thing I like music and don’t have to be comfortable with who wrote it.
The Humaniod album is excellent, with a lot of very, very good songs.
This is a good album and a good step for such young artist to take, going a little more dark and subdued I guess, but still great songs. This step removes them further from the energetic youth sounds and into their adult form. They make songs I like to hear so hope they keep this up!
WOW! just a great album beginning to end. Glad to have it and I am so happy Tokio Hotel is in the music business.

Ana Mendez | 10/9/2009, 11:17 pm EST

omg this person is totally…stupid. even if that person didnt know or like tokio hotel, the album still sound so damn amazing!!! AND THEY M-U-S-T RECOGNIZE!!!! the album is so inspiring and so deep, personally it goes really deep to my heart with all the lyrics and the sound.
just whatever all true TH fans know that tokio hotel are worth the world!!! BILL KAULITZ YOU ARE SO DAMN HOTT AND YOU KNOW THAT!!! :) :):):):):)

Ana Mendez | 10/9/2009, 11:20 pm EST

haha all the comments are with Tokio Hotel!!! 〶 danke:)

Sarah | 10/10/2009, 4:08 pm EST

Thanks for including 3 sentences about Tokio Hotel that contain no substance. I’m going to look for a better review…

Jackie | 10/10/2009, 11:46 pm EST

i agree about what you said about tokio hotel.
i love them with all my heart, but honestly?
the album was just a MONSTER LET DOWN!
they drowned all their music in murderous synths and stuff.
they’re naturally good; they don’t need it.
thank you for an honest review.

samantha | 10/13/2009, 2:20 pm EST

ok tokio hotel is not a crappy band they rock i fucking love them to death

Anonymous | 10/13/2009, 3:17 pm EST

sammiecutei45 | 10/27/2009, 10:43 am EST

bradly james for tokio htoel is not a crappy band god i guess u have no good taste in music

Kat | 10/29/2009, 4:05 am EST

I am 50 years old and LOVE this album! I have not been able to get the tunes out of my head for the last week, and I am a tough sell for much of today’s pop music (coming as I am from the Golden Age). These kids have tons of talent, they are only just warming up.

Jordan | 11/13/2009, 8:51 pm EST

Tokio Hotel’s new album ,,Humanoid” is amazing and one of the best albums by them that are yet to come. Scream was great, but i believe the band has made great strides forward in there new album.
