Melissa Etheridge Returns to “Slamming” Rock on March LP “Fearless Love”

Melissa Etheridge had a simple message when she met with producer John Shanks to discuss her next album. “I told him that I wanted to make a record that’s a hundred miles an hour all the time — unabashedly drawing from my all of my influences,” she says. “What we’ve done rocks harder than I’ve rocked in years. There’s a couple of ballads on it, but the majority of it is just really slamming.” The disc — Fearless Love — is due in March, with the debut single (also called “Fearless Love”) coming out in January.

Shanks, who has worked with everybody from Ashlee Simpson to Bon Jovi, began his career as Etheridge’s guitar player more than 20 years ago. “He likes to say I discovered him at [L.A. punk club] Madam Wong’s,” says Etheridge. “That’s where I first heard him play.” On Fearless Love, Etheridge says she is no longer trying to write pop hits for the radio. “I can’t play that game anymore,” she says. “You can’t win because if you sound like you are trying to write a pop song nobody likes you.”

Etheridge was discussing her new disc at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square last week shortly before taking the stage for a concert that aired live on Sirius XM’s the Pulse. The five-song set featured hits like “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One,” but nothing from the forthcoming disc. The show was the beginning of Pinktober, a month-long initiative to raise money for breast cancer research. “There’s so many survivors now, but unfortunately we also have so many of us getting diagnosed,” Etheridge says. “Our whole paradigm of health is upside down. The money is made when we’re sick. It’s a sinking ship and I think we’re seeing that. That’s why I like getting the message out.”

About time! As much as I like “Awakening”, that album was such a slow-burner that it took about 20 listens to really appreciate it. I miss the earlier fire-breathing Melissa Etheridge with songs like “Bring Me Some Wather” and “Your Little Secret”.

Oh yea baby bring it on, I have been waiting for her to blast back to rock.

Lance | 10/5/2009, 7:10 pm EST

I know she’s a lesbian who’s partner was artificially inseminated by David Crosby, I know about the breast cancer thing, but now she’s breaking into music too?

lemon | 10/5/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Lance, Lance, Lance………
Said:
“I know she’s a lesbian who’s partner was artificially inseminated by David Crosby, I know about the breast cancer thing, but now she’s breaking into music too?”

I say:
Dude, She has been in Music all her life!!! Where have you been? She has a whole stack of CD’s & DVD’s. She has a new partner of several years, Tammy Lynne Michaels-Etherider (it was legally changed) and the have twins now too from a sperm donor they don’t know. She has won Oscar & Emmy. She rocked the word with Her Janis tribute (onYouTube) and her ‘Inconvenient Truth’ (also on YouTube). She’s been compared to the female Bruce, I think she has know one she can be compared to. She is her own powerhouse. She is 1 of H.R.C. ‘Women who Rock’…..

Supah Free Que | 10/16/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I loved The Awakening…and now I am truly ready for some slamming big time !
I love Melissa Etheridge. She loves her fans and pretty much everyone else too and she rocks.
She really is all about Peace and Love as a way of life and I try and be that way too…live the words…it’s about time…For some P&L means Profit and Loss and for others it means Paece and Love…I do my best to be in the latter company…Looking forward to the new release…Looking forward to Fearless Love in more ways than one…Way to go and thank you for the ink on our favorite Rockstar…Breast Cancer Survivor…Environmental Activist…Parent…Human Rights Activist…the list goes on and on but I won’t. Melissa Etheridge is wonderful and the world is a better place with her in it. Coexist in Peace and Enjoy !

I agreed that she is very good at live. Unfortunately I have seen her only once in concert, ´cause I live in Finland… I really hope she will makes concerts in Europe 2010 also. Only Amsterdam, Berlin and London will be ok. It´s much easier (cheaper) to go to the those cities than all the way to USA : )

Rick | 11/22/2009, 4:41 pm EST

Melissa puts the R in ROCK. Her stuff is 200% better than the crap they play on the radio these days. Its nothing memorable. Melissa is a true to form, down to the core songwriter. How many of todays songs will hold up 20 years from now.Hmm,none!!!!!
