Lady Gaga Fights Madonna, Debuts “Bad Romance” on “Saturday Night Live”

10/5/09, 7:50 am EST

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera stepped up to kiss the Queen of Pop’s ring — well, Madonna herself — at the 2003 VMAs, and Lady Gaga got her chance to pay homage this weekend on Saturday Night Live. But rather than play it straight, SNL cast the two in a mock catfight that pit Gaga (the night’s musical guest) against Madge (in town promoting best-of collection Celebration). It all went down during a “Deep House Dish” sketch when DJ Dynasty Handbag (Kenan Thompson) announced “two exciting entertainers, performing together for the very first time.” The pair of slight blond stars spun around and while Gaga nailed her first lyric — “What’s wrong, Madonna, can’t get into the groove?” — Madonna seemed to blank on her lines, recovering in time to try to yank Gaga’s hair. “What the hell is a disco stick!?” Madonna shouted as the two struggled.

Get a look at Lady Gaga’s wildest wardrobe moments.

When their mock scuffle moved to the couch, Gaga said, “Hey, guess what Madonna, I’m totally hotter than you” to which Madonna retorted, “What kind of name is Lady Gaga, it sounds like baby food.” Touché. The horrified look on T’Shane (Andy Samberg)’s face said it all: WTF. Like many SNL sketches, there was no clear road out of this bizarre scenario, so Thompson suggested the two kiss and make up.

Lady Gaga returned just minutes later for her first performance, in which she put on her best red vinyl and danced to a version of “Paparazzi” that included a brief keytar solo. She was also careful to carefully enunciate the line “To that shit on the radio,” marking the second time this season profanity made it to the air on SNL — and it’s only the second episode of the year.

Gaga debuted an outfit that could double as a third-grade model of the atom for her second performance. The get-up called “The Orbit,” according to her Twitter, was eye-catching but a bit troublesome — it whacked Gaga on the head a few times and caused drama when she segued from “LoveGame” to the piano for a some riffs on life in New York (”cheered for the Yankees with my dad in section six”), “Poker Face” and a bit of new song “Bad Romance.” But Gaga took the time to stretch out and show off her considerable chops on the piano, and shout out “Saturday Night.”

But Lady Gaga was not done there: she showed up again in the night’s final sketch dressed in the bubble outfit the cover of Rolling Stone helped make famous this May. In fact, she was thumbing through the issue as Samberg approached wearing the exact same outfit (now he knows how Pink and Shakira felt at this year’s VMAs).

She…was…AWFUL!!!

Anthony David Corvino | 10/5/2009, 8:28 am EST

Lady Gaga was hilarious on SNL. She is a rising Star who if stays true to herself will be around for a long time. She has been quoted as being the “next” Madonna for this new generation. I believe she has the talent but she has a long way to go to be compared to the Queen of Pop. Continued success Lady Gaga.

Sam | 10/5/2009, 8:42 am EST

Madonna looked smoking hot! Divorce has done wonders for her, she put on a few pounds and her face/body looks hot and not gaunt. GaGa was good but Madonna shows everyone why she is a QUEEN!

Anony | 10/5/2009, 9:05 am EST

Yep she sure is the Queen of the underworld.Queen of darkness, need we say more

Anonymous | 10/5/2009, 9:52 am EST

This was actually the first semi-decent, semi-funny SNL after a long, long drought.

em | 10/5/2009, 10:33 am EST

gotta love the gaga.
the girl’s got it goin on.

Jungleland2 | 10/5/2009, 10:44 am EST

I have to say I was impressed. Lady Gaga sounded great, was good in the sketches and actually has piano and vocal chops. This was one of the better SNL musical performances in recent years (and I am not much of a pop/dance music fan)

Iconoclast | 10/5/2009, 11:02 am EST

I was astounded by the depth of talent displayed by Lady Gaga on SNL this week. When has a singing diva ever played such beautiful piano, or any instrument for that matter. Madonna? Slut-shock impact is old news. Gaga sang like a real star for the ages. Voice control, timbre, perfect pitch: astounding. Anyone who says she was awful is simply and finally a moron. I’m not a longtime Gaga fan and I’ve liked some Madonna songs, but Gaga’s SNL performance led me to search the internet for raving critics.

Leonardo | 10/5/2009, 1:01 pm EST

I love them both, but this fight was awful!

saltlick | 10/5/2009, 1:08 pm EST

When the hype smoke clears and we realize …whoa this lady has real talent.Well this show seems like a defining time in her entertainment career.Lady Gaga has the goods.Hopefully her art grows to have substance as well as style.
Live long and prosper.

ray | 10/5/2009, 1:18 pm EST

i like Lady Gaga, i think she lasts, she has talent and knows what shes doing.

Anonymous | 10/5/2009, 1:25 pm EST

I thought she was a flash in the pan until I watched SNL and I have too say she has talent.

SARAAA *__* | 10/5/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Wow Madonna is very hot ! yeah more than Lady Gaga ! I like the songs of gaga but madonna is Madonna and she is the Queen .. and sorry but in the worls is only one Madonna nobody can be the “next” .

eyeroller | 10/5/2009, 1:59 pm EST

never saw lady gaga before, heard ‘pokerface’ maybe once and was unimpressed, but damn, that woman is a hell of a performer and incredibly compelling to watch.

oh, and i do have a small TV, but i wasn’t sure if it was really madonna or just an impression…

shane | 10/5/2009, 2:55 pm EST

madonna’s looked amazing and her CD is debuting at #1, beating Mariah Carey.

Anonymous | 10/5/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Why doesn’t she debut a paper bag and cover that ugly ass face?

Sean | 10/5/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Madonna is the Cougar of Cougars…damn I was totally impressed. Hard to believe she’s 50 and STILL hotter then almost all the other female pop stars out there. She definitely is and will always be the Pop Queen!

Greg | 10/5/2009, 3:47 pm EST

I think she out shined Ryan Reynolds in the few skits she was apart of.

Anonymous | 10/5/2009, 3:56 pm EST

AVERAGE SINGER AVERAGE PIANO PLAYING YOU GUYS WILL BUY ANYTHING

Timmbo | 10/5/2009, 4:00 pm EST

I have to admit I have never heard Lady Gaga. Im more of a rock guy, and thought she was just a joke like Britney or 1000 of the Britney clones out there. It was refreshing to see someone who could actually sing, and play an instrument. And with no auto tuner too….very nice. Keep it up Lady Gaga.

Some guy | 10/5/2009, 4:30 pm EST

I’m definately more of a rick guy as well, closer to Metallica than
Madonna (and Pink Floyd than any of them). But this performance had a willingly unscripted element that I don’t think I’ve seen since the early SNL episodes from the 70s (no, Ashlee Simpson does NOT count). It felt more for the crowd there than just the people watching TV, for once. It felt like she put on the show and not her agent. Madonna, and so many others, never did that.

Benny | 10/5/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Madonna and Lady Gaga are hot..SNL however…

Shawn | 10/5/2009, 5:16 pm EST

Gaga was pretty good. But i think the fight was kinda awkward, but as long as we saw 2 hot chicks duke it out, it didnt matter. and on top of that Gaga was great with her performances, loved that a lot. And the final scene was funny with the bubble outfit. She’s so cute cuz she’s sooooo small! ^_^

Black Hole Sun | 10/5/2009, 5:24 pm EST

I don’t understand why someone who has talent would to turn to such lame-ass gimmicks to sell herself. Like her performance on SNL, I would’ve actually truly appreciated it if it weren’t for that ridiculous orbit thing she was wearing. I laughed my ass off when she bumped her head on it and tried to play the piano through it. Did she really need that? And if she can play piano and write songs, why does it have to be lame-ass songs involving “disco sticks”? I’m not saying she has to write super-deep, profound songs designed to change people’s lives, but even fun songs don’t have to be lame and stupid. They should be clever.

daniel | 10/5/2009, 5:31 pm EST

wow madonna really turns me on… what a hot woman!!!!!!!!!!

alice | 10/5/2009, 5:51 pm EST

mmm madonna really looks like a 20-something woman, we have to accept it, she and gaga look like sisters of the same age, but i think madonna is prettier.

djandy | 10/5/2009, 6:00 pm EST

Madonna will alway be the queen of pop Lady gaga is just following her footsteps with just one album under her belt. No comparison. Madonna rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Krissy | 10/5/2009, 7:24 pm EST

Loved Lady Gaga! She is so exciting on stage, because she has the talent and the confidence to improv and run with it. I don’t think her costumes are gimmicks, I think it is just a person having fun with the endless ways to dress a body!

Elaine | 10/5/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Lady Gaga has a beautiful voice. I love her songs and she is always exciting to watch. SNL showed she is funny too. I am a big fan of Madonna and loved seeing them together.

stacey | 10/6/2009, 12:18 am EST

Lady Gaga was dynamite on SNL,her performance of “Paparazzi” one for the ages.I didn’t know much about her before Saturday, but that girl is hot and talented.I think she’ll be around for a long time.

cghipp | 10/6/2009, 11:43 am EST

“Gaga debuted an outfit that could double as a third-grade model of the atom for her second performance.”

Seriously? Never seen a gyroscope before?

Anonymous | 10/6/2009, 12:43 pm EST

Umm… that wasn’t Madonna. It was Scarlett Johansson playing Madonna.

James | 10/6/2009, 2:52 pm EST

Dude. Madonna is freakin HOTTT! Since when has that happened since the 90’s?

Elvis Costanza | 10/6/2009, 3:47 pm EST

Take away the outfits, the stylists, the cameras, the glam….can either one of them actually carry a tune or put a song across without all the camouflage?

Alberto | 10/6/2009, 7:16 pm EST

Madonna is HOT!! Damn, the woman is hotter than ever!

TonyC | 10/7/2009, 12:16 am EST

>>>mmm madonna really looks like a 20-something woman

BWWWWWAAAHHAAAHHHAAAHHH !!! Ummm, YEAHHH, if you look at her from 30 feet away and she’s caked in makeup and lit from below. In real pictures sans all this, she looks like an old drag queen doing Madonna.

Tom | 10/7/2009, 3:12 am EST

These posts lauding Lady Gaga have just got to be plants by her label. There is no way this many people actually believe this wretch has anything even approaching talent. For the love of Pete, the poor dear was wearing concentric hula hoops while she played ridiculously easy licks on the piano and pandered to a clueless SNL audience about how super NYC is. What an utter freak show. Really bad, bad, bad.

And by the way, who’s this “Madonna” crone everyone’s talking about, anyway?

CELEBRATOR | 10/7/2009, 4:04 am EST

CELEBRATION, Madonna’s ultimate hits collection, is out now!! This is the best record of the season. I enjoy it immensely.

Yawn | 10/7/2009, 9:21 am EST

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Andrew | 10/7/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Madonna looked HOT. Damn she looks better than most girls half her age. Divorce suits her. I’m a 19 year old college dude and not your typical Madonna fan but her new song is pretty good and she is looking smokin hot these days.

BubbaCo | 10/7/2009, 6:08 pm EST

She didn’t say “disco stick,”…she said “disco SCHTICK!”

REALLY, RS? Do you edit/proof things that go out online.

Anonymous | 10/7/2009, 7:25 pm EST

Another stupid, unfunny, lame skit from SNL. What a load of horseshit…

Emely Osborned | 10/8/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Okayy….

Swartzanator | 10/8/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Love da Ga!

Real Music Lover | 10/8/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Lady Gaga was a show stopper on SNL. She has an amazing talent that I’m glad she is sharing with the world. Not only can she sing, she can play her own music. How many artists nowadays can do that? Very few. She is a great performer and I think she will have a great career for years to come. The fact that she still remains so humble after practically shooting up to stardom is also a plus on my list.

Anthony David Corvino! esq | 10/9/2009, 7:09 am EST

Madonna and Lady Gaga were wonderful on SNL. Lady Gaga has so much to offer us and Madonna is on top of the world.continued success to both of you ladies. As for you bloggers who say Lady Gaga is talentless. You are the problem for what is wrong with this world. So judgemental and have to class or an ear for music. You get up on a stage and perform LIVE. I bet you would be thinking twice next time before you spit your venom.

Robert Johnson | 10/9/2009, 11:30 am EST

I liked it when she got all bloody on that MTV Music Awards er’ whatever it was. A pound of flesh from a media whore complaining about the media. If Liberace was still around he and Lady Gaga could have made a classic album of duets. It seems to me that popular music has turned into something on the same level as pro wrestling. It can be fun to watch but only true boneheads could ever take it seriously or listen to it without the visuals. God bless Gaga and all her poor poor pitiful fans. Bread and circuses.

Rico | 10/9/2009, 6:29 pm EST

I was all set to hate Lady Gaga, thinking of her as just another T&A singer. Was I wrong! I am a hard rocker, but I know a good song when I hear it, too. So talented and visually compelling as a performer. I have a strong feeling she’s going to be around a very long time.

The voice of Reason | 10/9/2009, 10:25 pm EST

She is so terrible. haha. She is so untalented, and she realizes this, hence the ridiculous outfits and novelty b.s. she uses to distract people from the other (less important?) aspect of her… THE MUSIC. It is so bad!
Madonna sucks too.
They both suck. But the fact that people like either of them shows how worthless people are. Does anybody still care about art for arts sake? Perhaps.. but from the looks of it, the majority of you DO NOT.

JAMES | 10/10/2009, 6:20 am EST

NO! LADY GAGA UNTALENTED?¿? HELLO?
THEY ARE ICONS. YOUTH ICONS, GAY ICONS, LIVE ICONS AND LOVE ICONS.

THEY ARE UNTACHABLES. THEY ARE DIFERENTS. THEY KNOW WHAT SOMETHING NEW MEANS!

brian | 10/11/2009, 7:23 am EST

lady ga-ga does sing very well and is great on the piano. but no one mentioned her paparazzi song, where her red mask w/feathers was falling off and she had to discard it. at the end of that song, she looked like she needed oxygen. i think she’s gotten out of shape since her hot video’s where she looked like an olympic athlete.

Then there was the “ring debacle”. a stupid gimmick that was not rehearsed well at all. she’s trying to get back in the limelight after presenting a mysterious “super girl” persona. The curtain has come down & now we see her as just another human. I am disappointed. with the same amount of props and some rehearsal, she could have retained her ‘mystique’. but it’s too late now.

J. Edgar Hoover | 10/11/2009, 1:13 pm EST

Lady Goo Ga should come and take a ride on my disco stick. She is the next Madonna.

Christina, Brittany, Pink, Avril? Naaaa. She is the next Madonna.

You idiots NEED her. I hope she gives you as much freak show value as Michael Jackson. That little guy was an Entertainer!!

Her product is POLISHED and she is ready to go insane in front of every one. Maybe she’ll tint her skin dark and slowly turn African American. Oooo eeee, I just can’t wait. Me, Elvis and M.J. love her to bits.

neil bee | 10/11/2009, 2:08 pm EST

I could have sworn that really wasn’t Madonna. I thought she had more muscular arms, and somehow the face and voice weren’t just right. It seemed like the moves a cast member would make. Are you guys *sure*?

And yes, Gaga is the next Madonna! If I wasn’t taken … gawd I want that rump!

modar_angham_syria | 10/16/2009, 8:23 pm EST

love you Madonna , you are the one and only , & it’s a very good chance for gaga to show up more , very good show

radiogoogoo | 10/18/2009, 8:04 pm EST

I just think Gaga is firing in the wrong direction artistically, when she could be so much more. Really – what she needs is a subtext that works and is relevant; at least Madonna had that when she was her age, or even younger. Gaga needs to START MAKING SENSE to people, out of all the nonsense she throws at us.. and quit pretending it’s some sort of relevant art. If what she does really matters, the ‘art’ ought to be speaking volumes for itself. But sadly, it misfires at this early stage in her career.

forbidden_love | 10/22/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Madonna was so cute , love her

cheyenne | 10/26/2009, 7:49 pm EST

lol that was so crazy girl friend.

Lady G | 11/18/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Remember how the Me Against the Music song/video was like Madonna passing the torch to Brit Brit? Well, Brit completely dropped the thing when she went crazy (but I still love her), and Madonna got it back…only for it to be swiftly and elegantly taken from her by Lady Gaga, who didn’t even have to ask for it. Lady G is her own person, just like M. Both are original. Both have passion and energy and ambition. And that’s why Lady G will go as far as M has…she is her own lady with a vision all her own.

# 1 Fangirl | 11/20/2009, 4:56 pm EST

i love lady gaga but, she is truly a terrible actress. But and the plus side now I have something in common with her.
