Album Sales Down in 2009 Despite Huge Jackson, Beatles Numbers

Album sales are down 11.1 percent in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the same period last year, Reuters reports based on figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That decline comes even with the influx of sales after Michael Jackson’s death and the release of the Beatles remasters, as both artists’ respective catalogs have combined for about 6.3 million in sales this quarter. Even with the unexpected push from the catalog albums, total sales are still down 13.9 percent from 2008, a year which itself saw its sales drop 14 percent compared to 2007. If the trend continues, this will mark the eighth time in nine years that the record industry has seen a decline.

According to Reuters, 2009’s biggest seller so far has been Michael Jackson’s Number Ones compilation, which sold 1.8 million copies since the King of Pop’s death on June 25th. Sluggish sales can’t be blamed on a lack of marquee releases, though, as artists who have generally gone multiplatinum in the past — like Green Day, Eminem, Dave Matthews Band and U2 — have all put out high-profile releases this year. Eminem’s Relapse has lead the charge with 1.4 million copies since its release in May. After 30 weeks on the Billboard chart, U2’s No Line on the Horizon reached platinum two weeks ago, while Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown and DMB’s Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King have yet to pass the million copies sold mark.

There is some help in the coming months, between Eminem’s Relapse 2, a pair of long delayed hip-hop albums in 50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct and Lil Wayne’s Rebirth (Weezy’s Tha Carter III was the best-selling album of 2008), Michael Jackson’s This Is It soundtrack, the debut discs from American Idol’s Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, plus reported releases by Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis, Shakira, John Mayer, Carrie Underwood, Weezer and more.

For info on all the big releases due out in these final months of 2009, check out Rolling Stone’s Fall Music Preview.

Michael Jackson is the greatest of all time. He has no equal. The Beatles can fight for second with a lot of others but none will ever touch MJ’s career. Nobody ever. Period.

Mona Leeh | 10/6/2009, 12:07 am EST

JP you don’t anything about the Beatles so –move on!

Brett | 10/6/2009, 2:02 am EST

Sorry, but the Beatles make Michael Jackson seem like a lightweight, untalented hack.

GDgirl | 10/6/2009, 6:12 am EST

If you like the Beatles, buy the new Green Day CD. It’s a thing of beauty, and the Beatles’ influence is all over it.

Anonymous | 10/6/2009, 7:44 am EST

Michael Jackson Is THE GREATEST ARTIST OF ALL TIME! He’s like the King Of Music and Dance! No one will EVER come close to him. So the haters should stop saying bad things about him. I don’t care about what he did. His Music is AWESOME!

Dane | 10/6/2009, 8:29 am EST

first of all michael jackson only influenced a limited number of things. dance being the biggest one. i’m sick of all of this bullshit from people after he died NOW saying he was such a great talent. i bet most of the people talking about how great he was were still cracking jokes about him the day before he died. listen, if any of you know anything about music you would know that the beatles influenced anything and everything that has to do with music. they influenced everything from the way that music is produced and written all the way to where it’s performed live. NO ONE compares to the beatles. unless elvis and brian wilson got together and formed a band. that would be pretty sweet.

Tara | 10/6/2009, 8:57 am EST

Adam is my number one! Oh yes indeed. Love ADAM!

dk | 10/6/2009, 9:38 am EST

MJ is so overrated….the beatles were great and influenced anything…
The greatest solo artist is the one and only Prince….

CiCi | 10/6/2009, 11:40 am EST

You can’t compare Michael Jackson to the Beatles. That is like comparing apples and oranges. Both were in a league of their own and no other single artist can touch MJ and no other group can touch the Beatles. Both revolutionized the music world and brought something different to the table.

Brandon | 10/6/2009, 11:59 am EST

CiCi – you are absolutely right, and this is it!
There are only Michael Jackson and The Beatles, and the rest…!

Anonymous | 10/6/2009, 12:59 pm EST

Re. Brandon | 10/6/2009, 11:59 am EST:
Your should accurately quote New York Times: “There is Michael Jackson and there is everyone else”.
See the photo above? Why is it not a Beatles photo instead? Because MJ is beauty and magic.

bunkie | 10/7/2009, 2:59 am EST

Waiting for ADAM’S new album, single, video, movie 2012, movie 2012 sound track, special DELUXE EDITION of his album and anything else of his … posters, etc. … for my Christmas list.

Scott | 10/7/2009, 11:46 am EST

Michael Jackson? If he hadn’t died we wouldn’t even be talking about him! Take Thriller out of his career and he was AVERAGE. So what that he could dance…what’s that got to do with how good a record is? The Beatles were (and still) consistent with album and single sales….get over the MJ thing!! His death was the best comeback he could ever hoped to make.

Susan | 10/7/2009, 12:50 pm EST

SHAKIRA’s album is going to kick everyone’s ass.

Concert goer | 10/7/2009, 2:39 pm EST

I suppose he was not dead, yet, when 50 London concerts “This is it” were sold out in such record time.
How pathetic losers always tried to dismiss MJ’s success in life and in death.

Mel | 10/7/2009, 2:42 pm EST

Album sales are down because the MUSIC SUCKS. Plain and simple.

Drew | 10/7/2009, 11:13 pm EST

Can’t wait for MJ and Lambert

Jason | 10/8/2009, 12:06 am EST

Gotta grab the new Adam Lambert CD. The guys voice is just remarkable and Adam just Rocks!! Yeah the Beatles are the best of their time for sure. Really glad someone like Adam is the start of a whole new deal.

Anonymous | 10/8/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Indeed the music is in the voice not in the words.

This is not implying anybody did not really have a voice …

Anon | 10/8/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Michael Jackson was hugely influential, but in all the wrong ways. If you’re not a fan of music today, you can thank Michael Jackson for influencing all of these lightweights. He made it more about the dancing and the style than the music. And the music was just lightweight pop. To me, Michael Jackson is like McDonald’s – hugely popular but pretty low quality. Inspired a bunch of other fast food joints. I don’t need to say anything about the Beatles. I think their music speaks for itself.

Trevor | 10/10/2009, 4:38 pm EST

EMINEM is the Greatest

daniela | 10/11/2009, 1:45 am EST

the beatles an mj are totally different artist . though i like more mj both change music forever.

daniela | 10/11/2009, 1:49 am EST

and also i think mj was not overrated, but the haters always tried to bring him down even after his dead mj is awesomeee

Maria | 10/12/2009, 3:32 am EST

You’ve listed a bunch of artists coming up that are supposed to provide “help” to CD sales without mentioning Susan Boyle? Huh? The woman who’s been at or near the top of Amazon for over a month already? Okay……

People Choose to be Ignorant | 10/15/2009, 11:36 am EST

Micheal changed the music industry as well as saved it. Not only that he changed the way people enjoyed music. He had a huge influence on pop culture as well as many of new artists not only in the US, but all over the world. Saying that he had little to no influence on anything is just as ignorant as saying that the Beatles did nothing for music.

Anonymous | 10/17/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Eminen is a freak.

Beatles are more about political message (baby boomers’) than about music.

If you call talking and mumbling music …

Gandalf | 10/20/2009, 3:13 pm EST

All the elitist Beatles fans saying how much greater the Beatles are compared to Michael Jackson. Just keep on buying those Beatles records…the Jackson estate owns all those too. You ain’t making anyone sad in their camp.

Johnny Muzic | 10/22/2009, 12:43 am EST

I got it under control, guys.

E | 10/22/2009, 12:44 am EST

^I know your deepest secrets.

WTF | 10/24/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Lest we all forget.

Michael Jackson did nt start with thriller, he was making number ones as a preteen for more than a decade before thriller hit. Also off the wall was the album that introduced him as a solo artist not thriller and off the wall was multi platinum.

Haters need to get their facts straight.

Micheal jackson almost single handlely recreated the music video industry. He was the last artist to generate mass hysteria by his mere presense.

National leaders from across the globe expressed deep sorrow at his passing, is that a sign of having lightweight poppy influence?

And dont forget Elvis, he has to be mentioned. And if we really want to get technical and speak of global influence of a single artist then Bob Marley is incomparable, The man bascially established a religon and way of life internationally.

So dont hate and overcompensate. There are FOUR

Micheal Jackson
The Beatles
Elvis Presly
Bob Marley

Micael was okay but lets not.. | 10/24/2009, 8:44 pm EST

Forget that he did turn into a freak, was behaviorally a child living in a sort of wonderland, had failed marriages of qestionable quality and preferred the company of 8 year olds. I have no opinion on the molestation but I do know I still freak out a bit when I see him in an interview and I feel sad for the guy. Sure, when he passed, I got a surge of sentiment with his music but once that died down, I respected his contribution but he is in no way the best in Music. I am not sure we have seen the best because our audiences out there are not savvy music buyers. Until then, it is Iggy Pop somedays, Beatles another, Led Zep at othertimes with a weekend full of cool electronic acts. Sorry guy but POP music may be POPular but it is in no way the smartest and I want my music to reflect who I am. I care what others see me listening to because I am smarter than the Beyonce crowd.

shean | 10/29/2009, 8:04 am EST

First of all the Beatle were influenced by R&B groups prior to their arrival to the United States. The Beatle were great for their era, and so was Elvis who also influenecd the Beatle and so did Little Richard whom the Beatle lived with when they came to America. MJ was as big as they come don’t knock him and call him a hack, this guy was very talented
and giving. he was the best what he did. i can’t think of to many bad songs that the Bealtes, Elvis, or MJ has sung, most of songs where pretty good. and yes all great talents influence other so everthing posted on this site is subjective. there so many un-named artist through out history who will never get credit for contribution to music

Pete | 10/29/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Anyone who has any clue about music, from the 50s right through 2009, will know that the Beatles are the most influential recording act ever. Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and Led Zeppelin have also had a profound effect on music and culture. I did oodles of research because I was thinking of writing a book (and still may). Based on that, the correct order in terms of musical and cultural impact would be (1) The Beatles. More record sales than any other artist despite being around for under a decade, remarkable influence on culture, the single greatest influence on other musicians (2) Elvis Presley. Huge record sales and cultural influence (3) Michael Jackson. Changed the face of music, video and dance in the 80s, huge sales from Thriller (4) Led Zeppelin. Brought heavy metal into the mainstream. Didn’t appeal to all people but a huge influence in any case. Like them or not, don’t knock what they accomplished. The facts are the facts and the Beatles win the bout of heavyweights.

sc341 | 11/13/2009, 6:31 am EST

All of you people who think that “The Beatles” were better than Michael Jackson, you are entitled to your opinion but MJ got the last laugh because he owns 50% of the Sony/ATV Catalog which owns most of “The Beatle’s” songs. So every time you buy a “Beatle’s” cd or download one of their songs Michael Jackson makes money. Ka-ching.

sc341 | 11/13/2009, 6:36 am EST

Michael Jackson, still “The King Of Pop”. r.i.p.
