Madonna Eats Pizza, Talks A-Rod on “David Letterman”

10/1/09, 10:05 am EST

September 30th, 2009 was a historic day for Madonna. After winning countless Grammys, shattering tour records and entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Material Girl did something she’d never accomplished before on the Late Show With David Letterman: She ate a slice of pizza. Yesterday marked Madonna’s eighth appearance on Letterman’s couch, and after Madonna’s revelation that she has never tried perhaps one of New York’s trademark foods, Letterman escorted her to a nearby pizzeria, where flashbulbs and video cameras captured the historic meeting of Madonna, cheese, bread and sauce (and, uh, olives).

Madonna made an usual entrance into the Ed Sullivan Theatre — she was carried out on the sticks of the New York Rangers — which set the tone for one of the most light-hearted interviews the star has ever had on the Letterman couch. Dave helped bring out her rarely seen funny side, something fans have glimpsed during her Rock Hall acceptance speech and the “Beautiful Stranger” video. Talking about her eight-year marriage to director Guy Ritchie, Madonna said the union and the move to London strategically corresponded with “the Bush Years.” Madonna also, surprisingly, fielded questions about her relationship with New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, and admitted to smoking a joint backstage before her infamous, expletive-heavy Letterman interview back in 1994 (watch it below). “I didn’t inhale,” Madonna joked.

So what did Madonna not discuss? For starters, the whole reason she was likely on the show, the release of her greatest hits collection Celebration. Madonna also didn’t perform either new songs “Revolver” or “Celebration” on the show, as Harry Connick, Jr. served as musical guest. But for Madonna, just showing up is promotion enough.

She is the Queen of Pop! See if Brit, GaGa and all the others have longevity like Her Madgesty. Talent has kept her on top for 30 years and there is only 1 Madonna.

Madonna smoked a fattie? As Huggy Bear would say: “You just moved up a notch in my book. That puts you at notch one.”

Bulldog | 10/1/2009, 10:38 am EST

Where’s the English accent she picked up when she was in England talking down how bad things were back here?

Baba Loo | 10/1/2009, 10:49 am EST

We may not like everything about her, but her talent and success can not be denied! I just wish Michael never grabbed his crotch, and no that one else followed…

rodney | 10/1/2009, 10:58 am EST

I watched the interview last night, and I just kept thinking: “That woman is just such a tool”. Really, she just works soooo hard at trying to come off as clever you can practically see the wheels spinning in her head after a question is asked. And all the tired sexual innuendos and double entendres? We get it, Madonna, your a woman who flouts societies conventions, you live by your own rules and don’t care what people think. A 51 year old woman riffing on what she likes on her “pie” (get it?… get it?) is just gross, not groundbreaking.

RedScion | 10/1/2009, 5:56 pm EST

I love how Madonna talks about how she smoked a joint before she came on the show one time. She is the most entertaining woman of our time by far in every sense of the word.

tremble | 10/1/2009, 6:06 pm EST

LOL @ all the haters dissing her. Her last tour grossed $400 million, what kind of money are you making?

madguy | 10/1/2009, 6:33 pm EST

Rabbitbunny | 10/1/2009, 6:44 pm EST

Going back home for the Obama Age was probably the smartest and best move Madonna made. Once she came back home to America, she never looked back. My dear friend Maddy, I’m glad to see you’re back on the dance floor. Welcome home, Evita Rocker!

madd | 10/2/2009, 1:44 am EST

let’s buy celebration now!!!
make it no.1

Steve | 10/2/2009, 6:59 am EST

Wow ironic Letterman says he doesn’t have a sex life of his own.

Margherita Quattrostagioni | 10/2/2009, 7:00 am EST

“…perhaps one of New York’s trademark foods…”
Now, for $1.000.000, name three Western cities where pizza cannto be defined “local trademark food”!

You loose!

Whatever | 10/2/2009, 2:59 pm EST

I used to like Madonna, but seriously celebs should not talk about politics, or make comments like what she said during BUSH years. Please….give me a break…I don’t care about freedom of speech, when you have a high status there are times you should keep your mouth shut, because you start to LOOSE fans….UGH now i can’t stand her. AND WHAT HAPPENED TO HER FAKE ACCENT?????
