Gov’t Mule Break Out Alice Cooper Cover at “By a Thread” Preview Gig

What should we call it — jam glam? Halfway through Gov’t Mule’s intimate September 30th set at Brooklyn Bowl in New York, singer-guitarist Warren Haynes started playing the most unlikely riff, a gnarly stuttering thing that many of the couple-hundred folks on hand to celebrate the release of the Mule’s new studio album, By a Thread, probably didn’t recognize: “Is It My Body,” from Alice Cooper’s 1971 dirty-glitter classic, Love It to Death. I’ve seen the Mule light up whole chunks of the Sixties and Seventies songbooks on stage, but this was a great leap sideways. Keyboard player Danny Louris handled second lead guitar, so he and Haynes could recreate the original double talk of Alice guitarists Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton, while drummer Matt Abs and new bassist Jorgen Carlsson added some Free muscle to the pulse.

It was the only cover of the night. There wasn’t much room for more. Compared to the stretch-limo length of a regular Mule show, this was a battlefield-jeep ride: an hour plus encore, more than half of it drawn from the group’s meaty new album. Haynes emphasized the heavier, hard-charging numbers, starting with “Broke Down on the Brazos” and playing electric twelve-string slide guitar on “Railroad Boy.” The vintage chop of “Thorazine Shuffle” sounded especially violent in such close quarters, while “Inside Outside Woman Blues #3,” the second of two encores from By a Thread, was Cream with lava and Hendrix wah-wah. “See you on the road,” Haynes told the small lucky crowd at the end. The songs are ready.

The Mule is the best. Having recently bought their entire catalog, as well as Warren Haynes’ I can’t get enough,or turn enough people on to them. After 15 years of purposely ignoring them fearing I had no room, let alone the time for another band,I let friends talk me into giving them a chance. I haven’t looked back. If you like an eclectic mix of nearly all genres, esp. power trio rock, check them out. Warren ALWAYS gives the fans their money’s worth.

Right on Mike. Warren now wears the crown of *The Hardest Working Man in Show Business.*

David A. | 10/1/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Where have all you people been. The MULE is the best. Thanks Warren, just slow down and enjoy the music. We want you here for another 40 years.

Fozz | 10/1/2009, 2:18 pm EST

just add it to the long list of amazing cover work Mule does. I’ve espesially been digging there covers of the Grunge era with that jammed up mule twist. Mule makes these songs their own unlike any other band!

Angelemerald | 10/1/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Ahhh, David, you figured out my surprise song of the night. :-) Let me think about a fitting prize.

Gov’t Mule rocked it tonight at the Brooklyn Bowl. Someone will get the set list up soon I am sure. I heard about three new to me songs and I think there were 6 new ones on the set list all together with a few well chosen staples with one surprise. When you see the set list, you can guess which tune you think I thought was the surprise. I am loving all these new tunes from By A Thread. There are a lot of hard, Hendrix like rocking tunes and every time I hear Frozen Fear, which is a sweeter softer song on the cd, I love it more and more. The guys brought excellent musicianship to the stage tonight. And it was Matt’s Birthday and will be Jorgen’s in a few days so Stefani came out during a brief pause in the performance and said a few words of welcome and cheer and there were cakes and candles. I’ll say that I would gather, though I don’t know for sure, but the astrological balance in the band must have become more aligned by Jorgen and Matt having close birthdays because they are rocking together as an entity. And Danny too of course. He just threw his arms around Matt and hugged him. You could see the love these guys have for each other. It’s so nice to see. The whole energy thing is different in a good way with Jorgen. I saw a lot of people and met a lot of people and if I didn’t say hello to you, please make sure to come up to me the next time if I don’t come up to you. It was not too filled at first because the place is very large with a lot of different sections including the bowling alley area and a dining area and the floor near the stage, which was crowded but not too tight. The ladies room was one of the best around which says a lot about a place (actually the whole place is newly renovated). The decor was very rustic with a lot of gleaming wood, brick and metal type surfaces which made it feel comfortable yet provided panache. It was a beautiful place and everyone was happy to be there and friendly with each other. Man, the fans love this band. I think the guys came out and mingled but I had to head home because of work tomorrow. All in all it was a very fun night and a very special cd release gathering. I was glad to be there. ~ Peace and Ride the Mule ~

I wasn’t at this show but I’ve seen Mule a couple dozen times and I’m always blown away. Warren is an unrivaled monster on guitar and vocals!

mofo | 10/1/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Mule is the best – RS should put Warren on its covers instead of Megan Fox, durka durka!!

Bob W aka Mulehead | 10/1/2009, 2:36 pm EST

I’m with David A. Slow down a bit Warren. I worry you’re killin’ yourself sometimes. Can’t wait to
see you in Indy soon.

CK | 10/1/2009, 2:39 pm EST

YES! PUT WARREN ON THE COVER OR ROLLING STONE, HE IS THE HARDEST WORKING MAN AND HAS SO MANY FRIENDS/FANS NO ONE WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED, HE IS SOOO DOWN TO EARTH!!! I LOVE YOU WARREN THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GOOD TIMES BROTHER!

Adam | 10/1/2009, 2:42 pm EST

Most people at a Mule show *not* recognize “Is it My Body?” I think not. The Mule has been covering this song for years and most people in audience at a Gov’t Mule show would instantly recognize it. Or maybe I’m just too old school Mule.

Treavor | 10/1/2009, 2:45 pm EST

It’s great to hear that the boys are firing on all cylinders. It’s actually not the first time Warren has broken out some Alice Cooper. They’ve played “Is It My Body”before as well as “Eighteen.” Way back when Woody was still alive they also pulled out a bunch of ZZ Top tunes like “Just Got Paid” and “Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings”. Warren never ceases to amaze me with encyclopedic memory banks for all kinds of greatmusic. Sure, he drops a lyric here and there, but jeez, let’s see YOU try that! HAHA. Way to go boys!

Travis | 10/1/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Right on Adam. Been covering it since ‘98, with a fantastic version 12/31/99 w/ Audley Freed which bled into Hendrix’ Power of Soul jam.

Danycam | 10/1/2009, 2:55 pm EST

Its about time this bands live Performances get reviewed by this Magazine. Thanks David Fricke & Thanks Angel for the Fan perspective.

Glad to see RS with some Mule coverage – just wish I was one of the lucky ones to have been able to see ‘em last night. I’ll definitely be at the head of the line to pick up “By A Thread” later this month!

jusdubbin | 10/1/2009, 3:13 pm EST

The Mule is the best. They did the Alice Cooper song in Boston at the BoA Pavilion on 7/31 too, and it blew me out of my seat then!

Dan | 10/1/2009, 4:00 pm EST

I’m just surprised and grateful that Rolling Stone gave the Mule *positive* coverage!! This is the magazine that notoriously trashed some of the greatest music & musicians of all time!!

Temporary_S8nt | 10/1/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Thanks RS for covering the BEST BAND WORKING ! Warren should have been on the cover years ago. Mule never disappoint and you always get your money worth.

CK | 10/1/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Yeah, back when Woody was alive and they were still doing the bar scene they played a lot of Alice and many many other, I remember it well. Warren is still as sweet as he was back then.

Wiseben | 10/1/2009, 8:12 pm EST

I wasn’t lucky enough to catch this show in particular, but I have been loving Mule more than ever with new bassist Jorgen Carlsson. The on stage chemistry with the band is better than its been since I started following them shortly after Woody’s passing. Granted, I wasn’t there back in the ‘good old days’ but I’m very excited to have a talented and humble new member of the greatest living rock band.

They did ‘Is it my Body’ at the Boston show this summer.

toddonbike | 10/7/2009, 7:04 pm EST

As if they don’t have more than enough original material to make you swoon with the blues… you gotta love when the Mule busts out some killer covers such as any Zeppelin tune.

Anonymous | 10/27/2009, 8:46 am EST

There’s no such thing as a surprising cover from Gov’t Mule. I’ve heard them play Radiohead, Howlin’ Wolf, Soundgarden, Traffic … at once delivering an homage AND making each track uniquely their own. Gov’t G’damn Mule is the best band touring anywhere today, and has been for years.
