Foo Fighters Hit the Studio in Video for New Track “Wheels”

10/1/09, 9:12 am EST

The video for “Wheels,” the Foo Fighters’ first single off their upcoming best-of collection Greatest Hits, debuted over at MTV.com. Like the band’s clip for “The Pretender,” also directed by Sam Brown, “Wheels” is a low-key affair, with Dave Grohl and the gang simply performing in the studio. It’s a far cry from those fun Foo videos of yore: the faux Mentos commercials and the fever dreams with giant hands and Tenacious D wreaking havoc on an airplane.

“Wheels” rejoins Grohl with the producer who helped thrust his former band into the mainstream, Butch Vig, but their collaboration 18 years later is far removed from anything that would appear on Nevermind. “Wheels” finds the Foo at their most adult contemporary since “Big Me,” a track that seems like it was snatched off Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway. Maybe Grohl is just saving his energy, considering he’ll likely spend the better part of the next few months back behind the drums with his supergroup side project Them Crooked Vultures.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Greatest Hits will feature one more Vig-produced new song, dubbed “Word Forward,” plus 14 more of the Grammy-winning band’s biggest hits. The deluxe version of GH will come with a bonus DVD featuring all those Foo music videos, including “Wheels,” plus some live performance footage. The collection is due out November 3rd.

You know you’re good when you have a supergroup as a a side project.

Sorry, Dave, you're a side-man | 10/1/2009, 11:19 am EST

Grohl really isn’t much of a singer, songwriter, or a guitarist. Sure, he came up with “Everlong” and “Hero” but beyond that every Foo Fighters song is a derivative of an old Adult Oriented Rock song from the 70s or 80s. Each time he steps behind a drum kit and BLASTS the fuck out of it, it reinforces the fact that the man is an incredibly gifted drummer and this is the role he is meant for. The new “Wheels” song sounds like an awful lot like Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly” don’t it? Only Petty’s version is a hell of a lot better (in a lazy AOR kind of way.) Give it up, Ghrol. You’re not a frontman. This isn’t a bad thing in the slightest, but you’re an insanely gifted drummer, while — at best — an average singer/guitarist.

if he’s so bad, why have they won so many awards?, and why do they sell out everywhere, and why does every musician out there want to play beside him, you have no idea what your talking about, his song writing is very diverse and from the heart, he takes chances.

Foo Fighters Suck | 10/1/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Man this band just reminds me why alternative music sucked as soon as nirvana left the scene….seriously…this song could be a bon jovi song like the article said….luckily some indie bands have filled the void of those that dont like corporate crap

anyone with moderate talent can compose a cd of songs like this…um..creed anyone :-)

Jeremy | 10/1/2009, 2:16 pm EST

I love the Foos but this song is nearly identical to “Learning To Fly”. I couldn’t enjoy this song if I wanted to, I keep singing Petty’s lyrics over it. Maybe the other new track on the greatest hits will be better.

Oi Rolling Stone – ain’t it time you pulled your heads from your asses and realize Nirvana are no longer and the Beatles have split up! Did you not know John Lennon was murdered?? Oh and Bob Dylan isn’t loved by everyone these days…

Well guess what, all of the above is true. SO get over yourselves and realize – hey Dave Grohl is over Nirvana. He’s more than that and he deserves every credit that comes his way. Sure Kurt was good and all (but highly overrated), he wasn’t the only brains to Nirvana.

Give some credit where its due ok. No one buys your crap half the time anyway. I guess that means 4-5 stars for Bob Dylans Christmas Album coming out soon? We don’t need to hear how crap it is to know he’s gonna gonna get rave reviews from you. Not only that OF CORSE you will review it even tho its a Xmas album.

Wheels might be the worst track on this “album.”

Why do bands feel the need to record new songs for their “GREATEST HITS.”

The tracklist is awful!
Everlong twice!! (not good acoustic)

Where is DOA? I’ll stick around? Overdrive and Out? Halo?
Let it Die? No Way Back? Lonely as You or Up in Arms?

Skin and Bones, come on!

JUSTinPUSHPLAY | 10/1/2009, 7:49 pm EST

I love the guy up top that slags dave as “not a frontman, give it up”, FF have sold something like 45 million records, won loads of grammys, had consistant radio hits for 15 years, and they’re last record was up for “album of the year” at the grammys. You’re right he’s not a frontman..he’s a fucking great frontman of a consistantly great rock n roll band, long live the Foo Fighters!

alyx54 | 10/2/2009, 10:11 am EST

i love the foos. i sometimes wonder if they are trying to be like nirvana.or maybe its just dave. well either way this song is okay but the pretender is better.

Love the Foos and have from day one. Purchased the first album on CASSETTE (lol) the day it was released. The only problem with the Foos, and one possible reason for TCV happening right now, is that 15 years of consistently being “around” WILL create a backlash. Fifteen years of actually being popular (as in, you’re one of the 10 bands that still gets video airplay and every single you release makes multiple charts) makes the backlash inevitable. So, in regards to the negative comments from others here, stop hating! lol You don’t have to like the Foos – freedom is all that matter’s in my world. But not liking a band doesn’t give you the right to open your mouth (or move your fingers) to spread random hatred. Particularly when you have no idea what you’re talking about. Dave IS a good front man. He’s charismatic, charming, friendly, energetic and fun. More than can be said for a great many others in his role. Also, he has written consistently great rock AND POP songs since their first album. Anybody who knows anything about songwriting will tell you that’s it’s not easy AT ALL to write ONE incredible song. Dave has written albums full of them. Now, having said all that, he should have passed this one on to somebody else. It’s not a bad song – far from it. But it just doesn’t really seem like a good fit for the Foos.

And Greatest Hits comps and live albums (almost always) are simply contractual obligations. Sometimes it’s actually written into the contract that bands/artists are required to create/release them if applicable. Sometimes it’s written in that the band/artist can use them to fulfill the albums owed clauses in said contracts. Often times bands have no real desire to release a GH as it signals an end to their popularity. Regardless, they often end up being huge sellers. Sometimes (a lot, actually) they’ll be a band/artists biggest selling release. Particularly with bands/artists who’ve had a long, diverse career. It’s much easier to buy (or download) one disc than it is to pick up multiples discs and skip through them to find your favorite tracks.

Nine Inch Nails is Better | 10/2/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Not sounding good. I want more songs like In your honor, no way back, and best of you (all off of the same album). This song is pure filler

Eddie | 10/4/2009, 2:04 am EST

This song kicks ass, man

The Don Irish | 10/4/2009, 3:42 am EST

I believe they are on there own record label,Cerebus. and are working the tour and what not through management. But yes that is how most to all contracts work in the music business.

Marco | 10/4/2009, 11:29 am EST

Hrm, seems like you all need to realize something. Artists get older and their tastes in music/style changes. It is called art and it is constantly evolving. Did you expect to keep getting albums like The Colour and the Shape or In Your Honor? I didn’t….I know better.

Marco | 10/4/2009, 11:31 am EST

And if you all want to keep hearing more of the same ol My Hero/Best of You stuff, maybe you need to find a new band that fulfills that need.

Anonymous | 10/4/2009, 5:30 pm EST

bland, very generic arena rock song

Jungleland2 | 10/5/2009, 11:02 am EST

The “new track” on a Greatest Hits is almost always filler. Why waste a great song? The single and video are for promoting the Best Of CD, which is part of the bands contract (and may have no involvement in)

How many U2 throwaways are on their best of CDS (ok I dig Electrical Storm but the rest were pretty bad)

Tom Petty had “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” for YEARS as a leftover and tacked it onto a best of

With Itunes, you can make your own CUSTOM Best of FF for about the same price

fern | 10/29/2009, 8:51 pm EST

The reason Foo Fighters and other bands sell out stadiums and win awards is because of good marketing, air play, and a good fan base. It’s not necessarily because they’re any better than any other band who doesn’t have the same opportunities.
