Paul McCartney’s Historic Citi Field Stand Coming to CD/DVD

Earlier this summer, Paul McCartney christened Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets, with a sold-out three-night stand in Flushing, Queens. Those shows will be the focus of an upcoming 2CD/1DVD set titled Good Evening New York City. Each night’s 33-song, two-hour-and-40-minute hits-filled set was filmed with 15 high-definition cameras, plus an additional 75 flipcams were distributed to the audience to capture all angles of McCartney’s performance. Good Evening New York City will be released on November 17th via Hear Music.

One of the Citi Field stand’s highlights was undoubtedly a cameo by Billy Joel during the opening night’s encore. Joel was returning the favor after McCartney guested at Joel’s Last Play at Shea concert, helping perform the final ever notes at Shea Stadium — a spot filled with Beatles history — before it was demolished. McCartney’s Citi shows featured a mix of solo and Wings hits, Beatles classics, new tracks from side project the Fireman and some songs resurrected to pay homage to the Fab Four’s Shea shows, like “I’m Down.”

The deluxe edition of Good Evening New York City will feature both expanded packaging and a bonus DVD of McCartney performing atop the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York on July 15th. While the performance was filmed for Late Show With David Letterman, the DVD will include the performance of some songs that weren’t broadcast.

Check out photos from McCartney’s special Letterman gig.

I have been to many concerts, from the Who to the Stones, even to the ressurected VanHalen. But seeing McCartney at Citifield with my son, was the greatest concert I have ever attended. At 67, the man is still on top of his game. The Fireman is one of his great albums for sure.

Eggman | 9/30/2009, 1:03 pm EST

McCartney put’s out a LOT of live records.

1976 – Wings Over America
1990 – Tripping the Live Fantastic
1991 – Unplugged
1993 – Paul is Live
2002 – Back in the US
2005 – The Space Within
and now this one

I mean, I’ll buy it because I get everything he puts out……but I’m just sayin’.

PS – I wish he would add live horns and strings to the live show – he’s still using cheesy 80’s-sounding synth.

basser | 9/30/2009, 1:45 pm EST

Six live albums in 33 years isn’t that bad, Eggman. While I will admit that Paul Is Live came way too close to the heels of Unplugged and Tripping, the fact that he has six live albums in 33 years isn’t that bad of a ratio. Have you counted the live Stones albums since the mid-1970s? :)

basser | 9/30/2009, 1:48 pm EST

… and there wasn’t anything 80s or cheesy about Paul McCartney’s concert in August in Tulsa. Amazing show. Not one poker face or frown seen in the crowd …. :) Tied for the best show I’ve ever seen with The Who’s Dallas Aug. 27, 2000 gig (with John Entwistle). Jaw-dropping.

j | 9/30/2009, 2:04 pm EST

I have been to many concerts in my life. This was the first one that I was so overcome with emotion when Paul did Yesterday that I almost cried.

To Eggman, | 9/30/2009, 2:23 pm EST

The Space Within was just a DVD, not a live album.

And a horrible document, of what was actually an incredible tour.

rickylee | 9/30/2009, 2:40 pm EST

Hey The Space Within is awesome…mainly because me and my buds can be seen in it for about 2 seconds …but have to agree poor document of an amazing show(s) way too much focus on the audience rather than the performance. In person the blistering performance of Helter Skelter was total madness.

backbeats100 | 9/30/2009, 2:56 pm EST

i’ve been grooving to the beatles for 45 yrs. mccartney is doing the only thing he as well as ringo or many other greats do, these people have been jamming, writing, performing, that’s all they know and do, thank god, i’ve seen macca a couple of times, makes me glad i became a bass player. thank you, thank you, thank you.. peace

bruce | 9/30/2009, 3:25 pm EST

its gonna be a great album

Anonymous | 9/30/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Yes, rickylee.

That’s precisely the problem that plagues all McCartney DVD releases:

Way too much focusing on the audience shots.

Plus the intercutting of mind numbing testimonials from celebrities about McCartney’s ‘genius’, and his ‘legacy’, between almost every song.

We KNOW! He was a Beatle! We get it!

Now let us just watch the damn show! Okay?!

I really hope the Citi Field DVD just presents the concert, as it happened, without all the usual DVD crap that ruins the flow.

Laughs | 9/30/2009, 4:19 pm EST

Wow. A live recording in New York City. That’s really original.

Anonymous | 9/30/2009, 4:38 pm EST

considering that Paul McCartney played at the FIRST concert at the old Shea Stadium, and the FIRST concert at the new Citi Field, I think that DOES make him an original.

Certainly more original than your sarcastic remark, Mr. Laughs.

Dan | 9/30/2009, 7:32 pm EST

Paul is dead… dead RIGHT if he thinks I’m going to run out and buy this immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil | 9/30/2009, 7:33 pm EST

I buried Paul… deep in my heart for releasing this CD/DVD.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Joe Puma | 9/30/2009, 7:38 pm EST

“Anonymous” and “rickylee” stole my thunder!Seriously,Paul puts on the greatest shows but the constant crowd shots and celebrity testimonials during his live DVDs are infuriating. In fact ,I wish every concert disc would limit the audience pans to about a minute.(though I must admit I loved Anne Hathaway’s girl-next door beauty and enthusiasm emanating from the MSG seats during Elton John’s “Live At 60″ video.(another excellent DVD).

Rich | 9/30/2009, 7:42 pm EST

The Walrus was Paul…I can’t think of one for that.

Scott | 9/30/2009, 7:55 pm EST

28 IF… we’re measuring Paul’s greatness on a scale of 1 to 28.

Tony | 10/1/2009, 1:17 am EST

Totally agree on the audience shots making “space” unwatchable… news of the 70+ flipcams footage does not bode well for this release. I guess we can always hope though.

Nathan | 10/1/2009, 2:20 am EST

No Blu-Ray release? FAIL!

Anonymous | 10/1/2009, 9:28 am EST

It makes ‘Space Within Us’ unwatchable…

It makes ‘Back In the US’ unwatchable.

It makes ‘Live In St. Petersburg’ unwatchable.

It makes ‘Paul Is Live’ unwatchable.

It makes ‘Get Back’ unwatchable.

The only really watchable McCartney concert video is ROCKSHOW, from the 1976 Wings Over America tour, and even that is screwed up, by not including the complete show.

Let’s hope the Citi Field DVD finally gets it right.

Mark | 10/1/2009, 11:05 am EST

I will only buy it if it’s available on Blu-Ray. Shot in high definition? Then give us the option to watch it in high definition!

Ric | 10/1/2009, 11:39 am EST

I love The Beatles, I love Paul and I really think cd’s & dvd’s of his concerts are great. All of them.

Elgin4 | 10/1/2009, 11:58 am EST

If it was shot in hi-def why isn’t it available in Blu-ray? I hope they aren’t pulling the sleaze move of releasing DVD now and Blu-ray later so people buy it twice.

Anonymous | 10/1/2009, 2:07 pm EST

I think they are pushing it as a two-CD double album, with the live DVD as sort of a freebie bonus. (Sort of like David Gilmour’s recent Live At Gdansk.).

I doubt this will see a Blu-Ray release, in the immediate future anyway.

LI Gal | 10/1/2009, 8:10 pm EST

I was there Citifield 7/17/09 on the floor – very very excited to relive it again and again and again
he’s Sir Paul McCrack – to me :)

Weegie | 10/2/2009, 5:07 am EST

Post-Beatles Paul had some big hits in the 70’s with some questionable music…..he slowly faded away and off the charts….he’s now morphed into a nostalgia act…Almost Like Hearing the Beatles !! He jumped Le Shark in about oh….when did the Beatles break up ? 1969 ? He jumped it in 1969 then ;)

Brett | 10/2/2009, 1:33 pm EST

Weegie, you’re an idiot. Here’s some albums for you to listen to:

Flaming Pie
Chaos and Creation in the Backyard
Memory Almost Full
Electric Arguments

And those were all released within the last twelve years. McCartney is still a more than vital recording artist.

weegie | 10/2/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Actually Run Devil Run is his only listenable post Beatles album……see, i’m smarter than everyone else as usual ;)

weegie | 10/2/2009, 1:44 pm EST

And is that Paul in the pic or Madame Tussaud’s Paul ???
And er, I wouldn’t listen to these albums even if someone put a gun to my head…..i’d rather grab Meet the Beatles or Milk and Honey off’a the shelf ;)

weegie | 10/2/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Back in the U.S. [Capitol, 2002]
The broad arena-rock of expert nonentities robs the Beatle songs that jam this tour merch of all quirk and precision. Yet the Beatle songs still dwarf the proofs of his solo existence, which get lamer as he gets older. Either way his relentless smiley smile cloys on contact. And when he whips up some now-the-fellas now-the-ladies on “Hey Jude,” it is to cringe with dismay at the survival of a generation. Grade- D

Liz | 10/2/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Wrong. Ram is excellent. Ignore Rolling Stone’s lame-ass review, and you’ll find lots of folks nowadays revisiting “Ram” and realizing how gorgeous and strange it truly is. Check out the review on All music. Check out the 2 tribute CDs to Ram that came out this year from a mix of indie artists. Another great one is Paul’s first album, “McCartney.”

Finally, Chaos and Creation is terrific. But look, McCartney’s music may not be to your taste. This is all subjective, which is why your silly pronouncements about his solo career make no sense. They’re only relevant to you.

But you’re right on one count: Run Devil Run is great, too.

Franz | 10/2/2009, 1:57 pm EST

The only thing I hate about Paul are the knee-jerk Paul haters.

Jungleland2 | 10/2/2009, 3:40 pm EST

I’d rather they release the full ROCK SHOW concert on DVD than yet another McCartney solo show.

I love Paul, but Unplugged / Tripping The Live Fantastic (was that DVD called “Get Back”) were great and everything since has been nowhere as good.

Brett | 10/2/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Weegie, you can make all the posts you want, but you’re not going to convince anyone of anything other than that you’re a knee jerk McCartney hater.

GW | 10/2/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Weegie,

You’re not as smart as you think you are. Paul’s done quite a lot of great work after the Beatles. Frankly, you’re a pompous bore whose valueless opinions will fade away like most of the critics who dismissed not only the Beatles, but Paul McCartney as well. One last tip: learn to punctuate.

Eric Turnbow | 10/2/2009, 11:23 pm EST

I think that Paul McCartney is on the same level as Mozart or Beethoven or Bob Dylan as a composer. He is not washed up or insignificant in the least.

I do agree with the bloggers that say the dvd video’s are way too cut up with interviews and irrelevant hog wash. I just want to hear the songs and enjoy the continuity of a live show. The cut aways totally ruin it with the volume being faded in and out with lame testimonials and interviews. I HATE it! The “Wings over America” show Rockshow, filmed mostly is Seattle WA back in 1976 (I attended this concert at the age of 16, for a mere $10), is the best McCartney live show out there. Luckily I still have the vhs full version I bought back in the day. My friend bought a bootleg dvd from China or something of the full show that was copied off the same vhs show that I already own. He made a decent copy of it and watch it whenever I can! No bullshit interruptions, just the hot music. And only 4 Beatles songs, the rest Wings classics! This is the kind of concert experience dvd that really has substance. It was unfortunate that when they put out the 3 dvd set “The McCartney Years”, that they only put a tiny portion of the show on the dvd! Bummer to say the least. But is was cleaned up and remasters and better than nothing. My sister Marilyn is shown right before “Maybe I’m amazed” along with my friend and band leader at the time, David Broyel’s. that is a coll personalized moment for me and my family and friends. That concert will be a hard one to beat for nostalgia alone, as well as the consistent and continual live experience without all those lame cut aways.

Paul is still awesome and hot. The last time I saw him was in October, 2005, at The Seattle Key Arena. He was at the top of his game, with no lame interviews or cut aways. His body of work is beyond a doubt phenomenal! His songwriting is above and beyond anyone this side of Lenard Cohen, or Bob Dylan! You go Paul! And remember, no one is forcing anyone to buy this live concert! I for one will get it and pray that it is constant in it’s edit! Only time will tell. Perhaps His producer will review this blog, and take it all to heart! We can only pray!

Paul is a legend. He can release whatever he wants. He has contributed so much to music and people still love him. Has it gotten so bad that we have to bitch about things like too many live albums? Be greatful this guy is still rockin at 67 and puting out music. He wont be around forever. They dont get any bigger than McCartney! Cheers

edots | 10/3/2009, 10:34 am EST

I heard that Paul is packing it in at the age of 70. A world wide tour is expected to be announced. I saw the concert in NYC on July 21 and my girlfriend who had little interest in going is now really into the BEATLES. No group has hung in there for so long except Elvis. Can’t wait to Paul again.

keanubear | 10/3/2009, 11:23 pm EST

His live dvds are usually lame. Hopefully this will just be a concert and not something with endless anecdotes from people saying how awesome he is or how he was in this obscure band called the beatles…

How about a concert of just solo stuff? That’d be awesome.

William | 10/4/2009, 12:00 am EST

No Doubt Paul is great, but how can Citi afford to pay him and build a stadium when their stocks arn`t worth the paper they are printed on and the US government had to bail them out with billions of taxpayers money? Maybe the taxpayers can all get a free DVD!

Zoogy MoonPaint | 10/5/2009, 11:48 am EST

give weegie a wedgie.. we are bored with your claptrap.

Robin | 10/5/2009, 2:10 pm EST

I saw Macca at Citi Field , He was sensational. it amazed me how little age has slowed down his ability to perform at such a high standard, plus he has the greatest library of songs one could hope to utilize.

bkk | 10/17/2009, 7:15 pm EST

I saw Paul and wings in concert in 1976 now my goal is to have everything Paul did after the Beatles. He still rocks at 69. his performance on david letterman marque was great.

larro9 | 10/18/2009, 12:49 pm EST

space within ..agreed..too much fluff
go on ebay and find these complete shpws
glastonbury
roundhouse london
olympia paris
quebec canada
kiev russia
ALL great shows…that is it..great shows
no interviews or testaments during the shows

I watch these all the time

lady_madonna | 10/22/2009, 1:27 pm EST

Even tho’ I am a HUGE Macca fan, I will wait for the reviews before I buy the CD/DVD set. The last 2 live DVD’s were unbearable to watch…too much audience, too much jiggling bosoms on young blond bimbos, too much talking heads. Just give me PAUL & band performing…that’s all I ask.

Carmen From Vegas | 11/5/2009, 3:31 pm EST

I have seen Paul McCartney 7 times. The first time was with Wings. Paul is wonderful still.
He sang 34 songs at the Hard Rock in April, 09. The venue was so small, so I could see him very close with his great band. Even saw Nancy dancing on the balcony level. At least she loves his songs too :) I am 56 yrs. and the best time in my life was when Paul’s World Tour started in Vegas. I went early one morning and Vegas provide the wristbands for the real fans. My number was called FIRST !!! I saw him about 3 yards away for 3 hours. I will never forget the time period in my life. He still is great and so talented. I can not wait for the DVD concert ! :)

Marty from Meriden. | 11/18/2009, 4:08 am EST

I just bought The CITI FIELD Concert DVD and it is a great show. The concert on the ED SULLIVAN THEATER Marquee was a nice bonus.

B Linde | 11/22/2009, 9:10 am EST

saw the show in DC. production was off the charts. Seen every band live from the likes of Rush, The Who, and Clapton to Linkin Park, and Wolfmother. This show blew them all away. Glad I was able to witness this in my lifetime.
