The Big News: As expected, Pearl Jam’s ninth album Backspacer stormed to the Number One spot on this week’s Billboard Top 200, selling 189,000 copies according to Neilsen SoundScan. While Backspacer gave Pearl Jam their first Number One since 1996’s No Code, the album sold roughly 90,000 less copies than its predecessor Pearl Jam did in its opening week in 2006. After two weeks at the top, Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 nestled into Two with another 134,000 copies sold. Three Days Grace enjoyed their best debut yet as Life Starts Now reached Number Three, while Whitney Houston’s I Look to You and Miley Cyrus’ Time of Our Lives EP rounded out the Top Five.

Over on Billboard’s Top Catalog Chart, where the Fab Four and the King of Pop continue to battle it out, Michael Jackson reclaimed his top spot as Number Ones surpassed Abbey Road, which was the chart’s top seller for two consecutive weeks. The Beatles’ remasters take up 13 of the top 16 spots on the Catalog charts, with Jackson occupying the other three. Only the remaster for Yellow Submarine finds itself outside the Top 20 Catalog, coming in at 24.

Debuts: Three more artists managed to crack the Top 10, as Brand New’s Daisy, Five Finger Death Punch’s War is the Answer and Harry Connick, Jr.’s Your Songs ended up at Six-Seven-Eight respectively, even though none of the releases managed to sell over 50,000. Mika’s The Boy Who Knew Too Much bowed in at 19, while Sean Kingston — whose “Beautiful Girls” topped the Hot 100 and whose self-titled album peaked at Number Six in 2007 — saw his second album Tomorrow debut meekly at 37 with only 13,000 copies.

Last Week’s Heroes: Despite losing the top spot, The Blueprint 3 and Jay-Z proved resilient in its third week with another 100+K sales week and inevitable platinum status by this time next week. Speaking of platinum, congratulations all around to the Zac Brown Band, as The Foundation exceeded a million copies sold 45 weeks after it was released. Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon: The End of Day could be considered the week’s biggest loser, dropping from Four to 17 thanks to a 73 percent sales decline.

Next week, we’ll find out who wins the battle of the divas: Mariah, Madonna or Paramore.

S.O. | 9/30/2009, 2:46 pm EST

nice to see a very good rock band dominate the album chart as that’s is rare nowadays.

Rob Star | 9/30/2009, 2:48 pm EST

I heretofore had never purchased a PJ album, but upon hearing a sample of “The Fixer” I knew right away that I had to have the whole CD.

K JAM | 9/30/2009, 3:44 pm EST

THAY ARE THE GREATEST EVER THAT PEARL JAM BABY!

Greatest Band in the WORLD

Das | 9/30/2009, 6:14 pm EST

I wouldn’t call the Beatles battling it out with Michaels. Michael has been killing them in sales. His album Number Ones is approaching 2,000,000 this year. It has sold over 3,000,0000. It needs less than 500,000 to reach four million. And since actual sales don’t matter to the RIAA, but how many units they move, it will almost certainly be certified 4X platinum. So far, his Number Ones is the top selling album of 2009.

What’s an album?

tom in vegas | 9/30/2009, 10:26 pm EST

Anonymous, an album is a collection of songs, like a photo album is a group of pictures, a record album is a group of recordings. I know this was a (rather lame and overdone) attempt at humor, but an album is NOT 12 inches of vinyl, at least not exclusively. It may be in the form of 5 inches of metal, or a playlist on an mp3 player

dispid | 9/30/2009, 10:52 pm EST

this album is lame. biggest waste of money ever. beware.

Bill | 10/1/2009, 12:45 am EST

Hey dispid, what album is lame? The new Pearl Jam? You’re nuts. And some guy named “Weiland” is going to call a Pearl Jam song a Nirvana cover? I think the song in question has classic rock elements to it… didn’t think Nirvana when I heard it. A guy named “Weiland” used to act exactly like Eddie Vedder in music videos. I like STP, don’t get me wrong.

bill | 10/1/2009, 1:29 am EST

GONNA SEE MY FRIEND IS THE BEST NIRVANA SONG!

doug | 10/1/2009, 1:40 am EST

Pearl Jam is the greatest band in the world.

TK | 10/1/2009, 2:46 am EST

Amazing album from a brilliant group of musicians.
dispid if you don’t like the album give it to someone who appreciates music, obviasilly your appreciation for music is very limited.

Unevenflow | 10/1/2009, 3:02 am EST

Been weary of new Pearl Jam albums ever since Binaural. Why oh why doesn’t anything they put out hold a candle (no pun intended) to any of the first three PJ masterpieces Ten, VS and Vitalogy?? Putting it on my iPod and listening to “Rearviewmirror” or “Garden” and then hearing it back to back with “The Fixer” just doesn’t do any justice for me. Props to the band though. Out of all in the grunge era, PJ’s still ALIVE.

knup | 10/1/2009, 3:27 am EST

pearl jam still got it folks
and they will never make a bad record
they got soul, intellect,a goal line they’ll always tell something
it’s just simple as that
thank you ed & co

Ashkorsair | 10/1/2009, 8:33 am EST

some people still riding ‘its not ten, vs, vitalogy blah blah’ horse?
grow up, pearl jam did.
and btw, amongst the waves is totally AWESOME!!!!

Anonymous | 10/1/2009, 10:16 am EST

BEST….BAND…EVER!

MB | 10/1/2009, 10:16 am EST

I love PJ and this album is a solid A!

Anonymous | 10/1/2009, 10:18 am EST

‘Gonna See my Friend’ sounds more Who than Nirvana in my opinion. Great track regardless.

Dave | 10/1/2009, 11:29 am EST

I don’t put a lot of stock into hitting number one in albums or singles, I like to see if the music will stand the test of time.

Njoy | 10/1/2009, 11:42 am EST

Most of their albums after Vitalogy are underrated, which is why Backspacer should be no surprise. Yet people don’t give credit to their best work, Yield, Binaural, and the self title PJ album. Wake up people! Their best albums – Vs., Binaural, Pearl Jam, Yield, Backspacer. No Ten or Vitalogy? Overrated, and have too much filler. Contain some of their best songs though, can’t argue that one.

Lou | 10/1/2009, 11:56 am EST

Weiland | 9/30/2009, 1:35 pm EST

I love that nirvana cover- gonna see my friend.

Ironic, since the name you chose to represent yourself is a guy whose band ripped off PJ for years.

jj | 10/1/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Nirvana? Figures from a Rolling Stone message board? Nirvana’s been gone for 15 years now? Take your shrine down to Kurt Cobain and wake up. You’re 35 now, your teen angst is done.

His Prince Michael | 10/1/2009, 1:23 pm EST

Will the Pearl Jam/Nirvana
comparisons EVER end?

Nirvana was a “great” grunge band.

Pearl Jam is a GREAT band!

Pearl jam rocks! | 10/1/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Not bad for a 25 year old band. Their sound is dated but is nice to see a rock album on the POP charts.

Friggin Tommy Noble | 10/1/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Weiland, do yourself a favor and stop using whatever drugs you’re on for a day and use that day to actually listen to Nirvana’s entire catalog (since your statement would slightly indicate you haven’t heard any of it with a clear mind). Then listen to ‘Gonna See My Friend’ again (the one you refer to as the ‘Nirvana cover’, at which point you’ll realize it actually isn’t a cover), and then try telling us again how this song sounds anything remotely close to anything Nirvana has ever done.

pa | 10/1/2009, 4:31 pm EST

the same boring album by pearl jam. No creativity at all.

TK | 10/1/2009, 4:49 pm EST

“Gonna see my friend” is not a nirvana cover. If you don’t know shit about music don’t comment. The words and music are written by Vedder.

sellouts! | 10/1/2009, 6:30 pm EST

Great album, but for the first time in PJ’s history, the songs lose their luster live. This 1/2 tuning down crap really doesn’t work. If Eddie worked on his technique and layed off the cigarettes it would be a different story.

Stankcore | 10/1/2009, 10:13 pm EST

the chorus to Gunna See My Friend sounds like old Guns and Roses actually….with the super low vocal line in the background….

ohmydarwin | 10/2/2009, 10:50 am EST

Well, whatever the negs say, they are in number one place for a reason. And I couldnt agree more… this album is the mature Pearl Jam.

ohmydarwin | 10/2/2009, 10:52 am EST

Stankcore >> are you thinking Locomotive – use your illusion 2?

explained infinitum | 10/2/2009, 11:17 am EST

For all of you naysayers – what band do you like that is currently putting out albums? Let me know when the above mentioned band is relevant after 20 solid years.
Pearl Jam = Relevant.

Njoy | 10/2/2009, 4:05 pm EST

PJ will never get enough credit because they don’t sound like the used to (ten, vs, vitalogy), yet most of their best work was done after Vitalogy. Just because they no longer sound like a mainstream band does not make them irrelevant. Just makes people stupid for not listening.

bubble1 | 10/2/2009, 7:32 pm EST

I always thought Binaural was underrated. There just aren’t any bands out there that are as good as they are

Cheesecrop | 10/2/2009, 8:14 pm EST

I thought the new album was pretty good. I don’t expect perfection with every album, just that the majority of the songs be good. I got 7 out of 11 here, so I figure that’s better than a lot of stuff out there today.

I’m just glad to see them back at #1 after all this time.

Checkered | 10/2/2009, 11:37 pm EST

I love the new Living Colour album “The Chair in the Doorway”. When are they going to get some respect? I respect PJ, but damn, Living Colour is the shit.

chuck | 10/4/2009, 11:27 pm EST

This album (Backspacer) has some of the most Ten-esque sounding songs I’ve heard from Pearl Jam since being introduced to their music ala 2000 when Binaural was released. By no means is it their best work, but it’s damn good work nonetheless. Well worth the 12.95 I paid at Target. It’s music. It’s rock n’ roll. It beats the living shit out of just about anything else nowadays.

Elderly woman | 10/6/2009, 3:13 pm EST

I am so proud to see all the PJ-”cult followers” defending the band; it just re-iterates how amazing and respected and loved the band really is. For every 1 negative comment there are 10 arguing it and bashing the person who wrote it. PJ is exceptional! On record, LIVE, on bootleg – just amazing, there are no words that can describe the full instensity of PJ’s talent. Sometimes I’ll be listening to one of their songs and a genuine (and very wide) smile just appears on my face and doesn’t fade until the song is finished. I agree 100% with those people who are saying that PJ simply grew up: yes, although some songs do lean in style towards their older stuff, a trained ear will realize that this album is something so new and fresh. There is not 1 PJ album that I don’t love. They are all amazing :) and this one definitely does NOT fall short.

Jimi | 10/6/2009, 6:34 pm EST

i would have to say that “the fixer” is the best song on backspacer but i would also have to agree and say that they have grown up and just want to make music that they love an if you don’t get it their fine with that but everyone has their own opinion. i’m just glad to see them back and hit the charts in a big way. just wish the economy was better for them cause album sales suck now a days.

Bob | 10/6/2009, 8:08 pm EST

end is classic masterpiece

Kel | 10/9/2009, 8:30 pm EST

Amongst the Waves, Johnny Guitar and Unthought Known are brilliant

Nothingman | 10/15/2009, 8:11 am EST

‘Amongst The Waves’ is amazing and I feel something special everytime i played it…

odoylerules | 10/22/2009, 4:43 pm EST

BEST BAND EVER. CD is incredible. LOVE seeing a Rock bad on the top of the charts. doesnt happen too often……keep ridin that wave. see you in philly

growinupPJ | 10/22/2009, 11:37 pm EST
