Thom Yorke Will Debut New Band With Flea, Nigel Godrich in L.A.

Thom Yorke has recruited Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco for a new live outfit that will make its debut this Sunday and Monday, October 4th and 5th, at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre, the singer announced on Radiohead’s Dead Air Space Website this morning. The news ends weeks of rumors surrounding the usually reticent Radiohead frontman, who has been seen out gallivanting in Los Angeles recently, DJing at the Roosevelt Hotel and being snapped by paparazzi outside Nobu.

“In the past couple of weeks I’ve been getting a band together for fun to play The Eraser stuff live and the new songs etc. to see if it could work,” Yorke writes. “We don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz… well… we haven’t got that much material yet! But come and check it out if you are in the area.” We here at Rolling Stone love Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood, but the prospect of Yorke collaborating with Flea, one of the best in the game, is exciting. Yorke also recently called his new song “The Hollow Earth” a “bass monster,” so Flea should help in bringing songs like that and Eraser’s “Harrowdown Hill” from the studio to the stage.

Yorke has reportedly long expressed a desire to bring the textural Eraser to the stage, but so far his solo performances have amounted to him sitting alone onstage with an acoustic guitar. That should change with this new, nameless band.

It’s been a busy, busy month for Yorke: On the heels of a pair of new Radiohead tracks (“Harry Patch (In Memory Of)”, “These Are My Twisted Words”), Yorke released his own 12” single last week, “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses”/”The Hollow Earth.” As Rolling Stone previously reported, another new Yorke song called “Hearing Damage” will feature on the New Moon soundtrack.

Unbelievable… I hope they do a couple shows in NYC.

ZachT | 9/29/2009, 11:19 am EST

I’ve been waiting for this since “The Eraser” came out. I don’t see how any of this could possibly suck.

I hate flea.

Morgan | 9/29/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Nice, Thom Yorke and Flea in the same band. Not to mention Nigel Goodrich, and to mention an Ex-REM drummer. This sounds so awesome.

FLEA HATES YOU

rossi46 | 9/29/2009, 2:14 pm EST

intersting. Supergroups are becoming the next big thing?

Temple of the dog ?

Ari | 9/29/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Yorke’s as boring as a dog’s ass. Next.

To Ari | 9/29/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Not everybody finds dog’s asses to be boring. I find them quite interesting, in fact.

Warner Bros Daddy | 9/29/2009, 5:16 pm EST

An out of work REM drummer with Yorke? Guess that’s a fit.

MJR | 9/29/2009, 8:35 pm EST

Thats AWESOME!

kagaw | 9/30/2009, 1:20 am EST

RazzTheKid | 9/30/2009, 1:55 am EST

Let’s start releasing some more LPs!

Angst Teen | 9/30/2009, 3:07 am EST

Interesting. I Hope This Will Get Yorke Out Of The Twilight Of The New Moon. I Imagined Thom Would Have Enjoyed Watching Matthew Bellamy Dance With Robert Paterson’s Sparkling Suckeggs (Success), But I Guess He Wants To Be A Vampire Too. And Supergroups Seems To Be The Only Way Rock Music Can To Get Any Type Of Significant Attention From The Music Industry, Besides The Rhythm Game Phenomenoms Rock Band And Guitar Hero. Its A Shame, Because Most Of Them Do Not Last.

Former REM Drummer? | 9/30/2009, 7:21 am EST

whos the former REM drummer? I thought that was Bill Berry?

TWC | 9/30/2009, 8:37 am EST

Joey Waronker is amazing! Beck, REM, Smashing Pumpkins (sessions – yeah – look it up), a few tracks w Elliot Smith on XO, and he’s a producer.

stuporfly | 9/30/2009, 9:49 am EST

The elitist jerks who fawn all over Radiohead that can’t figure out why the Grande Dame Thom Yorke would deign to allow the likes of Flea into his hastily assembled side project are the same chumps who help make it so hard to take that band seriously. Among other things…

To TWC,

Yes, Bill Berry is R.E.M.’s only true former drummer.

Joey Waronker played with them as a substitute during the band’s Up period, after Berry left the band. He is also a former member of Beck’s backup band. (he’s also the son of former WB chief, Lenny Waronker.)

To stuporfly,
I am a huge Radiohead fan, and I think it’s awesome that Flea is in a side project with Thom Yorke. And I don’t understand how any fan of Music can be elitist. You should calm down and enjoy your music while I enjoy mine. Don’t get so angry, it’s all matter of opinion.

First Of All, I Thought People Were Only Allowed To Leave Comments About The Article. Second, I Type The Way I Type Because, I Know There Will Be Somebody Out There That Will Dislike It. Its Funny, Thats The Only Person That Took The Time Out Of There Day To Say Something About It, Besides Myself Who Decided To React. And Its Easier For Me To Read, So If Its Easier For Me, Then Its Has To Easier For Everbody Else. Thats My Excuse. Third, Thom Yorke Better Take Advantage And Release Another Solo/Band Album While He Has This Group Together. Since He Formed It To Give Better Performances From His Eraser Album. It Would Be A Wise Move. Get Away From The Twilight Thom.

Why is it so hard for people to realize that projects like this enable Radiohead to grow as a musical entity? Ed & Phil did some absolutely amazing stuff with Seven Worlds Collide, Jonny with his soundtrack work, and so on. They’ve all had their interests outside of Radiohead for years, so this is hardly anything out of the ordinary. Just chill and enjoy. Man I would kill to be at one of these shows…Thom Yorke and Flea in the same band???!?!?

ibn | 10/1/2009, 2:01 pm EST

It’s official. I’m the only person left who’s never been in a band with Flea. Jesus.
