Wolfgang’s Vault, the digital warehouse of concerts, recently announced plans to upload roughly 165 previously unreleased Grateful Dead concerts to their site by early November. The fun starts now, as the Vault has posted May 15th, 1970 show of the Dead performing at New York’s Fillmore East. Recorded a month before the release of Workingman’s Dead, the concert finds the Dead performing the second of two shows that day at the venue boasting a set list packed with songs from their new album and their second album of 1970, the classic American Beauty.

The late show’s first set features Jerry Garcia, “Pigpen,” Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kruetzman breaking out their acoustic instruments to showcase their new albums, while the second set is when the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers launches into the music that made them the most revered jam band of all-time. Among the highlights: a 20-minute “Dark Star” and a set-ending “Turn On Your Lovelight” that touches a half-hour in length.

I was at both this show and the 2/13, and at the risk of committing heresy, I enjoyed this one a lot more. Too bad the stunning NRPS set isn’t included.

Both the early and late shows complete with the Riders sets circulate (for free) in the digital realm. A titanic evening of music, 7 CD’s worth of Good Old Grateful Dead. Whether you buy it from WV or acquire it from trading circles, get this show! Certainly one of the great Dark Stars from 1970.

What an incredible show! I saw these guys and wondered what the hell? Years later I would be salivating that I saw Jerry G. and the Grateful D! I could not believe these guys would be as cool as they could be, but 20 years later I would be dancing with my son… “
