DJ AM’s Death Ruled “Accidental” Drug Overdose: Report

The death of Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein has been ruled an accidental overdose, TMZ reports. The New York City medical examiner will reportedly list the cause of death was the result of “acute intoxication” due to the combined effects of cocaine, oxycodone, Vicodin, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole. Despite the large number of drugs in Goldstein’s system — earlier reports stated that nine pills of OxyContin were found undigested upon autopsy — the ME stopped short of declaring the death a suicide.

See pictures of DJ AM with Travis Barker, Fergie, Jay-Z and more.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, DJ AM was found dead in his New York apartment on August 28th after failing to catch a flight for a scheduled gig in Las Vegas. A crack pipe, assorted pills and a half bag of cocaine were recovered immediately at the scene. Goldstein’s struggle with drug addiction has long been discussed, and while the DJ had been clean for over a decade, the stress following last year’s jet crash with Travis Barker and a prescription to Xanax reportedly caused a relapse.

Look back at more musicians lost before their time.

DJ AM was also forced to confront his past demons while filming an MTV reality show called Gone Too Far, in which Goldstein helped teens who battled drug addiction. In the series, Goldstein held a crack pipe for the first time in over 10 years and was visibly disturbed by the experience. As Rolling Stone wrote last week, MTV is reportedly in talks with the Goldstein family to air the series’ eight episodes.

Is a DJ considered an artist? Or just someone who samples and creates different sounds to can dance and trip to? It must of been a fun life, not necessarily a good one. RIP

Joey | 9/29/2009, 12:44 pm EST

I’m sorry DJ AM passed away, but how can this be called an “accidental” overdose when had all of that crap in his system?

John | 9/29/2009, 12:45 pm EST

I never understood the term “accidental overdose”. Aren’t you supposed to take the amount your dealer tells you to?

indian | 9/29/2009, 12:55 pm EST

so sad…rip adam

okay | 9/29/2009, 1:08 pm EST

I know that this is sad and everything, but honestly who cares. What did this guy do besides being friends with Travis Barker? No one made this big of a deal over Jam Master Jay’s death, which, in my opinion, was far more tragic.

BK | 9/29/2009, 1:13 pm EST

No Shit?

travis | 9/29/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Woop-sie daisey!

Pual Butouskinbergstein | 9/29/2009, 2:02 pm EST

“What did this guy do besides being friends with Travis Barker?”

He banged Nicole Ritchie too, which is pretty mammoth news on the TMZ/Perez Hilton circuit…

Hole | 9/29/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Enough drugs to kill an elephant…yeah it was a big accident. Give me a break

STFU | 9/29/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Maybe this f*ckhead wouldn’t have died if he didn’t sell out to DJ Hero

Anonymous | 9/29/2009, 4:37 pm EST

I’m sorry, who is DJ AM? And, who cares if he’s dead?

Wolf | 9/29/2009, 5:18 pm EST

Not an accident at all. He was asking for it. Well, he got it.

If you were ever at a DJ Am set you’d think twice about talking shit.

John | 9/30/2009, 8:57 am EST

Adam, I apologize for making light of your death. Any death is a loss. I’m sure you loved and were loved by family and friends. I’m also sure your death will not be in vain if it will stimulates the conversation of the deadly disease of drug addiction.

bozz04 | 9/30/2009, 12:48 pm EST

you accidental overdose you know how much of what your taking when you take it?

finn1132 | 9/30/2009, 2:49 pm EST

This is one of the saddest days of my life. I will never get over the news of… uh, what’s his name… oh, hold on, I hear the ice cream truck! BRB

frog leg | 9/30/2009, 3:20 pm EST

remember kids dont do drugs. or else you’ll end up like dj am, layne stayley, kurt cobain, jimi hendrix, janis joplin, jim morrison, bon scott and any other musician who croked based on drugs and alcohol. you would think after so many generations of this happening you would see less and less of it…not likely…

Wolf | 10/1/2009, 1:52 am EST

hey DJ Internet Poster…take it easy..you should lay off the drugs too.

Gomez | 10/1/2009, 10:33 am EST

Took all this by accident?

cocaine, oxycodone, Vicodin, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole. Despite the large number of drugs in Goldstein’s system A crack pipe, assorted pills and a half bag of cocaine

thick dick | 10/2/2009, 10:56 pm EST

who gives a sh#t!!!!!!!!!! One less non talented DJ. Maybe he should have spent more time learning an instrument or producing music as opposed to taking drugs.

Fu#K this crack head DJ!!!!

Frank White | 10/5/2009, 11:48 pm EST

For those of you here with IQ issues, the difference between an accidental overdose and a suicide is whether or not the person MEANT to die. Yes he had quite the cocktail of drugs in his system, but you would be surpised how much the human body can actually withstand and live.

Alos, a “dealer” does not tell you much drugs to take – lol – a doctor does idiot.

My guess, he did a bunch of coke (an upper) and after the crach wanted to come down (the pills). His body just had enough.

Either way it doesn’t really matter as the real trajedy is for his family, not anyone posting here.

Tk Scotie | 10/13/2009, 6:12 pm EST

It really does suck….. I saw him at coachella and his set rocked…. warren g surprise appearance was on his set…. He dealt with a really horrible disease which i totally understand…. I cant say i wouldnt have done the same after a plane crash like that… A mix of benzos, potent narcotic scripps and smoking bass would kill anyone when your smashing like that

mummakittyw | 10/19/2009, 11:24 pm EST

you people r so ignorant any loss of life matters you sound like a bunch of losers and should be ashamed he helped so many people so their lives would not end the way his did you should look at his death the way you would want someone else to look at yours don’t judge we all have done things we’re not proud of that’s what makes us human RESPECT

Vee | 10/23/2009, 2:10 am EST

Its ironic how someone who helped teens get sober before they overdose dies from an overdose. I still call him a hero though.

blub | 10/25/2009, 7:32 am EST

It’s not about accidentially taken. It’s about the suicide issue. Maybe he wanted to kill himself so it wouldn’t be accidential anymore. If he just took too much and too varying drugs it might be an accident of mixture. Maybe he didn’t exactly know how the different drugs would work together. How could you ever know?!

blub | 10/25/2009, 7:35 am EST

Cannot believe that he’s so dumb. Beeing an “sober” drug addict and friends with Paris??? He should ‘ve said goodbye to his former DJ live. He knew it was a leathal risk!

KaySte | 10/30/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Dude, fuck all you haters. You don’t fucking sit there and say “He asked for it”. NO ONE EVER ACTULLY ASKS FOR THIER DEATH. You stupid bitches. You don’t fucking know his life. & I bet you all the money in the world that if you were right in frount of his face, you wouldn’t be talking all your shit. So keep your mouth shut.

R.I.P. Adam. <3

CMM | 11/3/2009, 1:16 am EST

You guys are absolute pathetic closed minded people. you probably all live in the middle of the country. you should get out more, like to LA and NY and live. You all have no idea what you are talking about, I hope you enjoyed writing your embarrassing (for you, not Adam) comments. You all (for the most part) sound stupid and should do your research. Remember kiddies all you have in this world is your word….

for those of you who don’t know who he was, ask yourself, does anyone know who YOU are. every death affects a family, a friend and even the people he helped and who watched him help others. that man was a good person and his death has a huge effect. YOU are no one to judge him. God rest his soul and God help those of YOU who are too ignorant to understand.

Shen | 11/13/2009, 12:08 am EST

Yes DJ AM was a great man who helped alot of kids RIP…

gabishi | 11/13/2009, 12:08 am EST

wow adam u were awesome… what a shame that u overdose :( RIP

kimm | 11/13/2009, 12:28 am EST

I, personally, think it’s really sad; once he got clean, he dedicated his life to helping others get clean. Then again, it’s his fault he died. Yay for being neutral on a subject! ohwell. RIP.

KAREN | 11/13/2009, 2:36 am EST

I’m 63 years old and I just watched “Gone too soon”. I believe the man had become a hero to the people he saved and their families and rightly s. He was in a terrible plane crash and was burned terribly, have any of you felt that kind of pain and not gotten any pain killers? Believe me all of you would BEG for relief. I heard that he begged the doctors NOT to give him any because he was afraid it would send him into that hell again, and he was right..you should all leave his final judgment up to GOD. Who are all of you to condemn him? i’m willing to bet most of you young punks have done some of that crap too, like WEED for instance! Give me a break!

ashhh | 11/13/2009, 3:11 am EST

kay, you guys are all stupid. I’m sure if you’ve seen his show, you know how many lives he’s saved, and how many families he’s brought back together. He’s a real hero in my eyes. Yeah, he went through a hard time. Maybe he was ready to die. We’ll never know. He’s the only one that knows what was going through his mind, and the only one who ever will. you guys need to shut the fuck up and get a life. when you die, i’m sure everyone will be talkin shit just like you are on him. RIP DJ AM. even though i didn’t know you, you’ve even helped me in my life. thank you. <3

Tanya | 11/14/2009, 9:17 am EST

I watched his show, and for him to take the time out of his life to show others how to take the path of clean and soberness was inspirational. He spoke from the heart as he talked to each person he helped. He was able to help them more because of his own experience. Everyone knows once a addict always a addict. It’s just how you choose to stay sober. But he found himself in a situation that became too much for him. Sometimes pain is too much to overcome and you do what you have to to ease it. We don’t know what he was struggling with, we don’t know what his mind was thinking that day. So who are we to judge him.

All I can say now is my heart goes out to his family, and thank you for being you.

RIP DJ AM

Anonymous | 11/14/2009, 6:38 pm EST

The show is called “gone too far”, not “gone to soon”. I think though two titles have very different connotations and a correction needs to be made.

WhenDJ | 11/15/2009, 12:01 am EST

RIP Adam. I respect you and what you did for so many people. My heart goes out to your family and I hope those you helped can stay clean and sober. I did. I am helping people get clean and sober too! I hope I can make as big of a difference as you did! God bless.

chad | 11/16/2009, 6:07 pm EST

i have watched adams show and seen how much of a good heart and good intentions he had. coming from addiction and the constant struggle myself, and the daily battle to stay clean, i see how it can all go bad. and just like that your gone. Addiction is a nightmare and controls your life. adam understood this and did what he could to help others deal with his same demons. if you dont respect him for his music at least respect him for that!

Britt Berry | 11/16/2009, 7:35 pm EST

R.I.P. I love this guy…I have been watching every single one of the Gone Too Fars and at the end it always has the teens that he helped say a few words in memory of him, and I always start crying. So bad to the point where my shirt is soaking wet. I just can’t stand it. But I just want to say thank you to Adam because he helped my friends get sober. They watched the show and heard about him and became inspired. <3

kt | 11/17/2009, 2:27 am EST

R.I.P Adam
If you don’t have an addiction you will never understand his struggle, it takes over your entire world and hurts everyone one around you. It takes so much courage to stay clean and he did the best he could im sure…..but sometimes the addiction takes over and you have no control.

Emily | 11/20/2009, 12:01 am EST

How can anyone make light of a person’s death?? No matter who they are?? It’s tragic what happened to this man who has made a difference in the lives of anyone who watches his show Gone Too Far. You people make me sick. RIP Adam

KM | 11/20/2009, 12:20 am EST

It’s obvious that Adam went through a horrible phase of drug abuse. He also had a terrible relapse that resulted in his death. Suicide or not, he is a hero and impacted many people in such a positive way. All the people who disagree are ignorant and immature. RIP DJ ADAM

RiggaTony | 11/20/2009, 12:35 am EST

Its an accidental overdose because he was trying to get high. It would have been suicide if he ingested these drugs for the sole purpose of killing himself. My guess is he got high smoking base and then took the oxys benzos and benadryl to avoid a horrible “come down” and to get some sleep. Its tough to tell how certain drugs interact with each other. And for those of you who know nothing about the subject. People grow a tolerance to whatever drugs they are regularly taking. So the drugs he was on when he overdosed may seem like alot for non drug users. Where to him it might be what he was taking on a daily basis to get high. When I was using I did double the amount of the same shit that made my buddy overdose and I walked it off and walked it off like most people would feel after a 6 pack of beer. So dont pass judgement on people especially when speaking on a subject you know nothing about.Ive been clean for 9 months now and everyday is a struggle. The support DJ AM shows people on his show is more than my “supposed best friends” ever showed me while I was getting clean. Im not familiar with DJ AM’s work but that doesnt mean his life was any less important. So FUCK OFF to anyone that has anything bad to say about a man who helped so many.

tp | 11/20/2009, 12:35 am EST

you know what. you all are bunch of douche bags.
1: why would you ever wish death upon anyone?
2: you have no idea what it is like to suffer addiction obviously
3: he was sober for ten years and saved many lived that were down the path of ending the way his did.

this is very sad. never judge anyone until you can put yourself in their shoes and get the hell off of your high horse.

he helped many drug addicts in the time period of him being sober and due to the fact that he was in a jet crash and was prescribed pain medications…his addiction spiralled down the path he was at before considering his addiction was so strong. addiction is disease.

so all of you assholes out there who seriously have the balls to sit here and make a mockery out of a very tragic death… karma is a bitch. that isn’t cool.

willy d | 11/20/2009, 2:03 am EST

as a recovering addict i know how hard it is. today is my one year of sobriety, i just finished the epesode about the kid addicted to perscription drugs… that is what i struggled w mostly…. what he (a.m) did for ppl was brave and heroic to say the least…. his story and the lifes he touched has kept me sober and alive… R.I.P my hommie….. and thank you!!!!!! “and to all you haters, wait till someone you know or even yourself becomes addicted.. then rethink your ignorant coments… and to anyone who has an addiction.. you can do it@!! its possible!!! belive in your self and have faith in whatever god you see fit and all will be well…. live love and be free & clean…. and tolarate dont hate>>> amen A.M. you will be remembered!!!!!

mollyt | 11/20/2009, 3:02 am EST

all you people are so fucking stupid someone die and all you can say is who cares?
just because someone dies and you dont know who he is doesnt mean you have to be an ass about it have some respect

dd | 11/20/2009, 6:04 am EST

point proven, and to those who looked at the bad side of his death must be very selfish, ignorant and i dont understand how you can dis this guy. he is one of the most inspiring people ive yet to come across and he has a great heart. he’s only out to help others and i’m almost certain that he would not talk bad about anyone elses death due to overdose or any other reason cause he actually understands. rip dj am i’ll miss you greatly and i wish you could still be with us. you could of saved so many more lives

Anonymous | 11/20/2009, 4:51 pm EST

you all really should stop talking shit. Dj am was an amazing and inspirational man who tried to help others with their drug addictions. He helped so many people & its sad he wont be able to help anymore. rip adam. you will be missed.

smiley | 11/20/2009, 7:59 pm EST

I am sad to hear about the news of his death. I watch the show, and i heard teens talking about his death, but i never really new how it happend. Even though i hate to hear of someone dying, it does make me upset that the cause of his death was the same thing he was trying to keep people away from. What example does that show the teens and young adults that became sober because of his help? That shows them that eventually they will relapse as well…

ladybug | 11/21/2009, 12:49 am EST

i dont care who you are or what you think… we all have our “addictions”

ladybug | 11/21/2009, 12:57 am EST

i dont care who you are or what you think… we all have our “addictions” HE WAS TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE!!!!! IT BRING TEARS TO MY EYES AS I WATCH “GONE TOO FAR”. i wish he was here to help me! nobody can understand or judge anyone else unless you have been there… and if you have been there, you WILL NOT JUDGE, you will feel the pain too. i think what he tried to do for people who needed help was great, and for the ones saying “who the f#*k was he and “who was he” or that he deserved it… well who are you? have you made a big name for yourself????? have you had the stresses that he may have had? DID YOU KNOW HIM??? have you ever lost someone over this shit? get over yourselves…
R.I.P DJ AM – you had talent, you tried to fix yourself and others! you are above the “haters” and im am sure that they have their own issues…. otherwise, they would not be so cruel!

DJ am fan | 11/26/2009, 2:14 am EST

fuck you haters. your all disrespectful and have no sense of reality and what this world has in it. DJ AM was more succesful than all of us combined or elses we wouldent be here on rollingStone.com making comments. so shut the fuck up. grow some heart inside ur worthless minds and show the man some respect for trying to help people in this world its not his fucking fault he relapsed … u wouldnet understand…. o and if u think about it he did more good then u in life so keep workin haters

nat | 11/27/2009, 2:50 pm EST

by the grace of god there go i..

lets show an ounce of respect for a human that has passed on .
isnt that what being an humanitarian is all about?

what about that saying “judge not…”

taylor | 11/29/2009, 2:39 pm EST

its sad to see what people have to say about DJ AM. i mean sitting here talking shit about him after everything that he did. how many lives did he save after his show “gone too far”? now how many lives did you save? yeah, thats what i thought. he was in a jet plane crash, and the doctors prescribed the pills. its not like he wanted them. im sure he didn’t want to take them, but he had to. and being sober for 11 years, those pills did damage to him and his addiction took over, not him. so stop talking shit and respect.
R.I.P DJ AM. <3
