Weekend Rock List: Who Should Nominated For Rock Hall?

9/25/09, 5:46 pm EST

For years, members of the Kiss Army stamped their feet in unison every time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations were announced and the Gods of Thunder weren’t on the short list. That all changed this year: Kiss is finally up for Rock Immortality, opening the door for another band with a fervent fanbase to demand justice.

So this weekend’s Rock List is dedicated to bands our readers feel should be nominated for the Rock Hall. We’re fully expecting a rush of Rush fans to dominate the polls, but as evidenced from the feedback from our 2010 nominations story, there are dozens of artists readers feel should be inducted, so have your say in the comments. Until then, here are some artists to spark the debate:

• Tom Waits
• The Beastie Boys
• Rush
• Sonic Youth
• Warren Zevon

Moody Blues should get some recognition. Saw them in the summer and they still put on a good show

S.O. | 9/25/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Rush (and many other acts I can’t think of that people have complained about) Should be nominated every year till they final get it.

Unfortunately that’ll probably take until most of these guys are in the 60s when they finally have their chance.

S.O. | 9/25/2009, 6:18 pm EST

Wait…. Rush is probably in their 60s already. So they are long overdue.

Patti Brown | 9/25/2009, 6:19 pm EST

Yeah, “Weird Al” Yankovic definitely deserves to be in the Rock Hall. He’s been eligible since 2004. Come on, people. It’s Weird Al!

In terms of bands with cultural impact as well as musical credibility…

1) Joy Division – no Joy Division, no U2 or post-punk era, no Madchester scene, no raves…..
2) Alice Cooper – predates, Kiss, New York Dolls, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, among others
3) Television – it’s really ridiculous they’re not in
4) Heart – female rock pioneers with damn great album tracks
5) Carole King – I know she’s in as a songwriter, but not a solo act?
5) The Jam – Best British trio since Cream
6) Ozzy is in as a solo artist…… riiiight?
7) Dead Kennedys – Their music is extraordinary, influential on political music that followed, and their T-shirt logo is iconic
8) The Smiths

and finally, three bands which are directly responsible for the Red Hot Chili Peppers:

Bad Brains, Black Flag and X. Particularly Black Flag.

There are lots of bands from the early days of rock not in there that so deserve it. Why are they not there? In the words of one of the guys of Chicago…”We pissed the wrong people off”

Three Dog Night!!!’
Chicago
Moody Blues
Alice Cooper
Steppenwolf
Monkees Yes, the Monkees. They had more top 10 albums in the sixties than anybody except the Beatles.

Charles Crossley, Jr. | 9/28/2009, 7:42 am EST

1. Johnny Burnette Rock ‘N’ Roll Trio
2. Big Mama Thornton
3. Billy Ward & His Dominoes

Cheap Trick has been snubbed for how long, while lesser acts have been inducted?? It’s time for the boys from Rockford to get their call. They’ve been playing great music non-stop for three decades and wrote some absolute classics. No reason Cheap Trick shouldn’t be at the top of next year’s class.

Zimi | 9/28/2009, 11:37 am EST

How uptight is the R’nR HoF?
Check those responses.
Sheesh is the place even any fun?

wrecksracer | 9/28/2009, 12:54 pm EST

I’m with everybody who wants LINK WRAY in the HOF. The guy practically invented the power chord, and his song Rumble was banned even though it is an instrumental…it just sounds dangerous.

ONEWAY | 9/28/2009, 8:23 pm EST

“Weird Al” Yankovic is one for sure.

Guy has had major success making multiple hit parodies and originals spanning entire decades since the 80’s. “White & Nerdy” is his biggest hit to date, although he’s made many other great comedy songs that he spends tons of time writing and recording.

His entire catalog is somewhere near 200 songs now, all with certain unique charms and clear quality.

You can’t deny anything I just typed… so why shouldn’t he be?

Roy | 9/29/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Singer-Songwriter and Pianist Elton John and his songwriting partner, Lyricist Bernie Taupin, were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, but only Elton John was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. This does not make any sense whatsoever. If there had not been a Bernie Taupin, there would not have been an Elton John and vice versa. Their music was a collaborative effort. Bernie Taupin should have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame back in 1994 as a Lyricist in the Non-Performers category, the same year that Elton John was inducted in the performers category.

Bernie Taupin didn’t just write lyrics exclusively for Elton John. Bernie Taupin also wrote the lyrics for songs recorded by Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Kiki Dee, Cher, Alice Cooper, Robert Palmer, Melissa Manchester, Rick Derringer, The Hudson Brothers, Olivia Newton John, The Motels, Starship, Heart, Animotion, Stray Cats, John Waite, Martin Page, Peter Cetera, Bryan Ferry, Tammy Wynette, Little Richard, Marianne Faithful, Courtney Love, John Anderson, Willie Nelson, Teddy Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, Toby Keith, and Brian Wilson, as well as for his own singing career, both as a solo artist and as a member of his own late-1990s Country-Western band, The Farm Dogs.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin comprise one of the longest running and most successful songwriting teams of all time. Bernie Taupin’s 40 years of collaborative work with Elton John alone should qualify him for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Please induct Lyricist Bernie Taupin into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in the Non-Performers category. His induction is long overdue.

Roy | 9/29/2009, 4:02 pm EST
