New Order’s Sumner Talks Birth of Bad Lieutenant, Plans for U.S. Gigs

Two years ago New Order bassist Peter Hook quit the group and made it clear he wanted the band name retired. “You are no more New Order than I am!” he wrote in an infamous MySpace screed. “You may have two-thirds, but don’t assume you have the rights to do anything ‘New Order-ey,’ because you don’t.” The remaining members (Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and New Order touring guitarist Phil Cunningham) took his advice, and re-dubbed themselves
Bad Lieutenant. Their debut album Never Cry Another Tear is out October 13th. “The last New Order project was hard work,” Sumner says. “This was a happier atmosphere.”

Sumner got the idea for the group’s name at Johnny Marr’s house. “I walked in and he was watching the scene in the movie Bad Lieutenant where Harvey Kietel is shooting the radio,” Sumner says. “I said, ‘What the fuck is this film?’ It was so gross and over the top.”

Since Sumner is no stranger to over-the-top band names (Joy Division and New Order were both derived from Nazi Germany), it seemed like the perfect moniker. Drummer Stephen Morris was handling a family problem during recording and only plays on two tracks, but he’s now a full-time member and will tour with the group. Blur bassist Alex James and guitarist Jake Evans round out the band.

Unlike much of Sumner’s previous work, the album eschews synthesizers for guitars. “I decided it was important to play to our strengths,” says Sumner. “Phil and Jake are just both really talented guitarists. There would be no point in me giving them synthesizers.” In the early stages of Bad Lieutenant, Sumner was working on a solo project with Madonna producer Stuart Price that was heavy on synths. “Making two albums at a time diluted my attention,” says Sumner. “We put the album on hold — so I’m not giving up on the synthesizer entirely.”

Bad Lieutenant will launch their debut tour October 20th in Brighton, England. In November they are coming to the states to play gigs in New York, Chicago and Toronto. Details have yet to be announced, but Sumner says they will open for the Pixies during their run of shows at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. “The bulk of the set will be Bad Lieutenant songs,” says Sumner. “But there’s also going to be songs from my past including New Order, Joy
Division, Electronic and a song I did with the Chemical Brothers called ‘Out Of Control.’ ”

Might New Order reform one day, like they did in 1998 after a five-year hiatus? “I’ll give you my stock answer because I have to be very tactful about what I say,” says Sumner. “I think too many bad things have been said and done, so I don’t think so. It was a different situation 10 years ago. This one’s turned a bit nasty.”

Sumner Rules!

Kudos to Sumner and Morris for seeking new musical paths and for giving Alex James a new job! The tracks are great, reminds me of R.E.M./Big Star/Wilco with modern U2 thrown in there.

I had a chance to listen to this album and all I have to say that it is a great album. If you like great guitar playing, nice synths and great melodies you will love this album. I liked Sink Or Swim, This Is Home, Runaway and many more, I don’t think that there is one bad song on this album. Bernard Sumner is a musical genius, he has worked with New Order, Electronic and Joy Division. Give this album a listen and you will be charmed.

TM – so was Ian Curtis so they changed their name and became something new and equally beautiful. New Order are finished… hello Bad Lieutenant.

So far I have only heard Bad Lieutenant’s forthcoming 7-inch ‘Sink or swim’. Like in so many occasions before I have been cheered up by Bernard Sumner’s lyrics which quite often seem to me like what I would have wanted to say but could not. In terms of personal differences I can understand people come to points leaving no other way out than parting. But from musical sight I can increasingly not understand Hooky ceased collaboration with Bernard. Indeed Bernard is a genius and will remain one of the greatest music makers.
Keep it up, Bernard!

Awesome! I grew up listening to New Order and the Smiths … Benard sounds great! Can’t wait for them to hit the States.
I just wished you guys had not waited so long in putting out this album. If U2 can do it you guys can too!

i think bad lieutenant sounds a bit like WAITING FOR THE SIRENS CALL, KRAFTY, happier tuned guitar songs. Im excited for the record. It is going to make my year

“Drummer Stephen Morris was handling a family problem during recording and only plays on two tracks, but he’s now a full-time member and will tour with the group.”

Thank God! One of the best drummers of all time. It’s not over till he leaves of dies.

yet again Bernard summer has done it again just pure class, cant wait for the album, who needs hooky?

William | 9/28/2009, 7:54 pm EST

Hooky is becoming a cartoon – i heard him say he’d consider celebrity big brother…from the man who was part of Joy Division? Hooky, say it ain’t so!!?

NIghtnerd | 9/29/2009, 5:13 pm EST

Bernard transcends music and time. It’s incredible he and Stephen Morris have been together since 1976 going back to Joy Division and then in 1980 with New Order. The two songs available for sample are strong lyrically although you can’t help to wish for Hooky’s distinctive bass guitar to kick in. That aside Bad Lieutenant is here to stay for the next few years. Thank goodness.

Wow I can’t wait, and it will be a long road trip for me!!!

New Order were the best band of the 80’s, didn’t like much after Technique, good comeback with Get Ready but Siren’s call was weak. It’s been an up and down past 20 years, Bad Lieutenent sounds promising. I still can’t work out how middle aged men after working together for more than 30 years can carry on like 8 year olds. Peter Hook should make an album with Hugh Cornwell and call it ‘Chip On My Shoulder’ by the Grumpy Old Men.

“Split the Atom” is absolutely divine. While that track is my favorite, this entire album is highly recommended. It’s brilliant.
