John Mayer Offers First Listen to “Battle Studies” Single “Who Says”

John Mayer premiered the first single off his new album Battle Studies, “Who Says,” on his official Website, alerting fans to his new song with a tweet that reads, “From my heart to yours.” The sweet little acoustic folk ballad starts off innocently, reminding fans of Continuum favorites like “Stop This Train” and “Heart of Life.” And as Mayer tells Rolling Stone in our new issue, the song’s opening line — “Who says I can’t get stoned?” — is equally innocent.

“When I sing it, I do not think about marijuana — I think about walking around your house naked with a guitar,” Mayer says. “It’s about being in control of the pleasure in your life.”

Musically, “Who Says” accomplishes what Mayer says he set out to do on his follow-up to 2006’s soulful and introspective Continuum: Make a pop album, or “a record where you could sing any of the songs in an American Idol audition,” as Mayer tells RS.

Battle Studies also features “Heartbreak Warfare,” a pop-soul tune that may or may not be about Mayer’s tabloid-fixture relationship with actress Jennifer Aniston. Taylor Swift will also make an appearance on the album, singing a Fleetwood Mac-esque duet with Mayer called “Half of My Heart.” For much more on Battle Studies, due out November 17th, be sure to check out the new issue of Rolling Stone, and to read up on over 40 of the biggest albums dropping this autumn, be sure to check out our Fall Music Preview.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 9/25/2009, 12:25 pm EST

I can’t fucking wait!

CONTINUUM was such an awesome album. I hope he can follow it up.

Go John!

tgb | 9/25/2009, 12:51 pm EST

John, your songs aren’t any good. Your a heck of a guitar player. But, that’s it.

tgb i have to disagree | 9/25/2009, 1:17 pm EST

yes John Mayer is one heck of a guitar player! But there are also millions of people out there who LOVE his songs. I suppose its a matter of taste but millions of records sold, grammys, and a solid fan base would indicate he definitely has something. Its also nice that he sings whatever he wants to.

John Mayer rocks | 9/25/2009, 2:28 pm EST

Continuum was amazing as were his other albums before. I can’t wait to see where he goes with this release.

Nigel Smith | 9/25/2009, 3:12 pm EST

I would very much like Mr. Mayer to have my babies.

Anonymous | 9/25/2009, 3:17 pm EST

Ugh. Chronic gonorrhea is a bitch.

lilyspryte | 9/25/2009, 3:45 pm EST

Nigel……. Mr. Mayer has no ovaries to speak of, so how will he have babies?
Where is the fetus going to gestate? Is he going to keep it in a box?
10 points to the person who tells me what movie that comes from. Ready…. go!

JC | 9/25/2009, 4:04 pm EST

I just listened to this song and my first reaction is EGO. Jeez, I know he’s not a bad looking guy and he’s got some talent but give me a break. Does anyone really want to hear about how long his nights are in different cities, how he can’t remember “You”. Who say’s he can’t get stoned? Is that all he can come up with? Calling a girl from his past to fake love for an hour, is not my ideal of good lyrics.
I hope it gets better than this.

Ari | 9/25/2009, 4:57 pm EST

‘Friends, Lovers or Nothing’ from Battle Studies will blow this song out of the water. No.2 single for sure. The lyrics are incredible. A born songwriter.

SJH | 9/25/2009, 6:02 pm EST

Nice tune. Voice sounds pretty good. Hate the lyrics.

Katie | 9/25/2009, 8:25 pm EST

Totally turned off. I hope it was worth it.

Dave | 9/25/2009, 9:53 pm EST

Yeah, it figures. The first really honest tune John Mayer releases, and people “hate the lyrics.” Idiots. “Who Says” is John’s best poetry yet. The further John leaves “Your Body Is a Wonderland” behind, the better. “Who Says” is a brilliant song, finally placing John on a comparable level with Arlow Guthrie and Peter Yarrow. Keep it up John, you may yet break free of the stupidity that surrounds you…

LBE | 9/25/2009, 10:22 pm EST

The song blows. If Mayer would write a decent “rock” song instead of this acoustic shit, someone just might give a damn. Guess that would be too much to ask of such a media whore.

VH | 9/25/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Very disappointed. I hope the other songs are better

Dave | 9/25/2009, 11:35 pm EST

How very interesting that my previous comment was deleted. I thought it was pretty supportive of John’s music. It’s a good thing I have a sense of humor. “Who Says” is a great song.

Dave | 9/25/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Hmm, now I see that comment again. Must be an html thing, never mind. Again- “Who Says” is a great song.

chris | 9/26/2009, 4:42 am EST

Who Says is more meaningful than meets the eye. It is not my favorite thing he has created, but I am confident that some real good stuff is on the rest of the cd. This song is maybe the topsoil that nourishes the good stuff behind it.

Simon | 9/26/2009, 5:02 am EST

I just think that it is disappointing seeing him walking back to the pop stuff. I really thought Continuum was a great album, and i hoped he would follow the more bluesy direction.

But nope, back to the acoustic whining

Alison | 9/26/2009, 10:25 am EST

Very lame song. This guy’s got some ego on him to think that women dream about him walking around naked in their house playing the guitar.

My dream is for him to stop making music and fix my roof.

The Rocker | 9/26/2009, 4:33 pm EST

John Mayer likes to think he’s such an amazing guitar player. But I never see him in any guitar magazines. Guess it’s all in his mind.

Bored | 9/26/2009, 5:14 pm EST

More lame-ass coffee house acoustic crap from one of America’s premier douche bags.

lily | 9/26/2009, 6:24 pm EST

I have been waiting and waiting for this album, and I have to say, “who says” is a disappointment. why is that the single? My friends made fun of me for liking john Mayer because of songs like “your body is a wonderland”, but they calmed down a little after continuum came out. now its gonna start all over again when this songs hits the radio…

I know he has way better songs than this on his album, I’ve heard “friends lovers or nothing” and “heartbreak warfare”, they are sooooo good! so why…

and to this guy above me, John Mayer is an AMAZING guitarist, you don’t know what your talking about.

Anonymous | 9/26/2009, 6:57 pm EST

John Mayer is the BEST!<3

Anonymous | 9/26/2009, 7:12 pm EST

this song is awesome. john mayer can play guitar and write with the best of em. i cant wait to hear the rest of the album im sure itll be as good as continuum if not better john is a stud at what he does

bryce | 9/26/2009, 7:16 pm EST

john is a complete stud i cant wait to hear the rest of the album

anonymous | 9/26/2009, 7:46 pm EST

john is fantastic. period!

nancy | 9/26/2009, 7:57 pm EST

John Mayer is an amazing guitarist! The new song sounds great! I was lucky enough to have front row seats to one of his Toronto shows. What a night. He is the real deal! Can’t wait for the new album to come out.

Will | 9/26/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Lily,

John Mayer is an OK guitarist. Amazing? Don’t think so. Check out SRV, John Frusciante, Angus Young, the Edge, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai…those are AMAZING guitarists.

Danielle | 9/26/2009, 8:33 pm EST

i flove him :)
nuff said <3

Darren | 9/26/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Got to admit that this song sounds like a refurbished “Stop this Train.” As a guitarist it was the firt thing I thought which is not good for the first single. I was hoping he would expand and take off from Continuum (which is a great album) NOT regurgitate the same sound. Hopefully, it gets better.

Maya | 9/27/2009, 2:22 am EST

John, don’t listen to these stupid asses, you’re one of the best guitarist alive or dead.

Also, I don’t want to have your babies, but would you be my baby?

Zig | 9/27/2009, 3:59 am EST

I hate it that people are saying Johns gone back to the pop thing… who the hell cares. Im pretty sure he should be able to do what ever he wants with his music. He’s paid his dues as a musician and a song writer. Anything that dude touches turns to gold, and rightly so. He’s an awesome musician, and we all know now that he can play guitar like no other. That should be enough…

Anonymous | 9/27/2009, 7:18 am EST

I don’t know if he can make anything better than Continuum. . . but I’ll buy anything he does after that album :) .

Gary | 9/28/2009, 9:14 am EST

The Edge an amazing guitarist?! ROFL that statement proves you are a total fool.

Paula | 9/28/2009, 10:31 am EST

I think John is a great guitar player, and I really love his music, but I must admit I was expecting a bit more of this single, after Continuum and the Trio – I looooove the Trio!!

Just one more thing if you ever read this: JOHN PLEASE COME TO BRAZIL!!!

Kyle | 9/28/2009, 11:24 am EST

This album will showcase John’s lyric and song writing skills. His guitar skills have already beeen proven on Continuum, Try!, and As/Is. All you haters out there are just mad because John is comparable to Jimi Hendrix, or Eric Clapton. He is the greatest song writer of our generation.

Anonymous | 9/28/2009, 3:00 pm EST

‘Who Says’ is sheer poetry. It speaks of great self-reflection and finding out who you are in life. Being comfortable in your own skin no matter your past or what you do is the what everyone should strive for. John simply put into words what everyone may briefly ponder, but may never reach. Something we should all think about if you ask me.

Jac | 9/29/2009, 12:54 am EST

Oh please these lyrics compared to some of his past work are juvenille at best. He knows how to write we all know that and his are naturally clever. He doesnt need to catch the world’s attention with mentioning getting stoned.

anonymous | 9/29/2009, 1:06 am EST

I agree my first thought was this sounds exactly like stop this train and Bored your comment made me laugh but really I am a fan I just don’t need to worship the ground he walks on because he does enought of that for himself

mel | 9/30/2009, 12:57 pm EST

i agree with darren, it does sound really familiar ( alot like stop this train) it kind of seems like he didn’t put as much feeling into this as he normally does.

Stacey from charlotte | 9/30/2009, 10:37 pm EST

haha whoever the hell it was that said the song sucked because it was acoustic is a fucking retard! hahahaha.

go listen to nickelback you shithead.

warrenpease | 10/1/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Songwriting of the personal variety, as JM is known and loved for, requires something real for people to connect with. By immersing himself in the vapid, LA, self-centered media driven scene, he has only further shoved me personally from being able to connect with anything, or find something real and honest to latch onto. I had hoped that JM would disapear from the public eye and create a “career defining” record; it seems he has done quite the opposite.

Globals | 10/2/2009, 7:33 pm EST

all good things

Crushed | 10/4/2009, 12:35 pm EST

I couldn’t agree more with most of warrenpease’s comments except for the comment about the upcoming album, as I have not listened to “Who Says”. Life is filled with learning experiences. Maybe John is having one. Who cares? I still love the guy. It’s hard living on the edge, exposing yourself to the criticism of millions. It takes guts, balls and courage, especially if your goal is to just be yourself.

Crushed | 10/4/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Just listened to “Who Says”. It sounds like a comment on the last 9 years of his life. He meets so many people, sees so many faces. He is young, good looking (I think), has a healthy libido and not ready to settle down. Who says he can’t just be?

It’s a woman’s choice to date him. Not all women are looking for a boyfriend, and I do hear he’s hot in the sack. After all, Warren Betty finally settled-in…um, like at 60!

Crushed | 10/4/2009, 12:55 pm EST

“Who Says” might just become the new slogan for 2010!!!

Crushed | 10/4/2009, 12:58 pm EST

BTW, is it just me, or does the sound on “Who Says?” have a fuzzy quality, like an old record album?

Anonymous | 10/10/2009, 11:29 pm EST

Good to know JM is back for better or for worse but back!!

Alex | 10/14/2009, 11:07 pm EST

Ya’ll, let the dude write what he wants. Then we get to decide if we like it or not. You’re crazy conceited if you’re going to start criticizing his “lack of originality” or “egotistical lyrics”. If it’s that bad, go write a few CD’s and win a few grammy’s and show him how it’s done.

elwood | 10/16/2009, 9:34 am EST

this song sounds a bit familiar for a new track but i still think it’s cool… only some of the people will like some of the music, some of the time.

Ricky | 10/20/2009, 2:32 am EST

I’ve followed JM’s career since his beginning. He’s a musical genius. The moronic posts on this thread attacking his lyrical talent, musical direction (”he’s going back to pop”), or egotistical motivation simply reflect the idiocy and lack of taste of today’s generation. There’s a reason why B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Buddy Guy jump at any opportunity to collaborate with him.

He never grows complacent with his level of performance. He consistently challenges himself with new musical endeavors. Look at his last album: he started with the singer-song writer style, went into the heavy blues Trio style, and closed out with the John Mayer Band rock style. How many musicians could pull that off?

James | 10/20/2009, 2:46 am EST

“JC | 9/25/2009, 4:04 pm EST

I just listened to this song and my first reaction is EGO. Jeez, I know he’s not a bad looking guy and he’s got some talent but give me a break. Does anyone really want to hear about how long his nights are in different cities, how he can’t remember “You”. Who say’s he can’t get stoned? Is that all he can come up with? Calling a girl from his past to fake love for an hour, is not my ideal of good lyrics.
I hope it gets better than this.”

In other words, you didn’t understand the lyrics. Your limitation in understanding literature is not a foundation for a judgment.

I’ll help you out. John Mayer went through a period of time where he was on the paparazzi’s top 3 list. There were few categories of scandals that he was not linked to.

He’s taken the last year to withdraw from that “celebrity” persona. He’s reevaluated his lifestyle. My interpretation of these lyrics is the exact opposite of an egotistical womanizer. He’s writing about the loneliness of the spotlight. He’s recognized in every city he visits, but he’s never understood or valued for the person he sees himself as.

“Calling a girl to fake love for an hour,” is not John bragging about a booty call. He’s talking about the desperation of finding some kind of human connection.

This song is not about ego. It’s a profession of humility.

I recommend you stick with the true lyrical geniuses of today that are more at your level: Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Hillary Duff.

Wow | 10/23/2009, 2:14 pm EST

Have to agree with the general comments of everyone here. Song isn’t what I expected, but I think it’ll grow on me. And whoever said Angus Young and The Edge are the greatest guitarists out there is obviously a complete moron.

James is right, your idiotic interpretation of the song shouldn’t have anything to do with the song itself.

ShiftingMidnight's Kevin | 10/28/2009, 11:43 am EST

lilyspryte:

Life of Brian.

“Why are you always going on about women, Stan?

I want to be one.”

Hahaha – best scene of the entire moive. A little more trivia for YOU. Did you know what rock legend not only funded the entire movie, but also made a cameo?

George Harrison. And no, I am not kidding. :)

Battle Studies is going to be an incredible album from what I’ve heard so far. Keep up the awe-inspiring music, Johnny. We’ll keep needing it.

Priya | 11/4/2009, 1:14 am EST

Whether it lives up to expectations or not doesn’t matter. What matters is he’s back with new material. I’m just grateful for his work in an age of un-original cover versions and sampling crap that current artists are making money from..

Hiflysi | 11/11/2009, 6:29 am EST

TGB, give yourself an uppercut. You clearly don’t know music.

JumpingInPuddles | 11/12/2009, 9:18 pm EST

He had me at “I’ve been driving…85 in…the kind of morning…that lasts all afternoon…i’m just stuck inside the gloom.” Been a huge huge fan of his writing ever since. There have been moments on every record that have moved me to tears because he expresses what we all feel so amazingly well.

I just listened to the new record on Rhapsody. hmmm…Is all I have to say. Ok, I have more to say, but I’ve been trying to work on being more careful with my words, lately, so for now: hmmmm.

Kjellen | 11/17/2009, 11:50 pm EST

My first thought when i heard this song on the radio was, “Oh, wow, someone ripped off stop this train.” now i know that it was john mayer. and i am disappointed :(

i think john mayer is a genius, but i loved the direction that his music was taking over the years. and i really think that this album is a step backwards.
