Pearl Jam’s “Backspacer” On Pace For Number One Debut

Pearl Jam’s ninth studio album, Backspacer, is on pace to become the band’s first Number One album on Billboard’s Top 200 chart since 1996’s No Code. According to Billboard.biz, Backspacer is expected sell in the 175,000-200,000 range, enough to give Pearl Jam their first Number One in 13 years, but not enough to hit the 279,000 the band’s self-titled album sold in 2006 when it debuted at Number Two (Pearl Jam was beaten out by Tool’s 10,000 Days for the top spot).

The album’s strong sales showing is notable because Backspacer is Pearl Jam’s first release without the backing of a major label; the album is exclusive to Target, iTunes, indie record stores and the band’s own Ten Club. Throughout their nearly two-decade career, Pearl Jam’s albums have typically found their way to the upper levels of the charts: 1993’s Vs. and 1994’s Vitalogy both topped out at Number One, while Ten, Yield, Binaural and Pearl Jam all peaked at Number Two. Riot Act remains the band’s lone studio album not to reach One or Two, debuting at Number Five in 2002.

Pearl Jam have also teamed with Target for a new, limited-edition T-shirt featuring Tom Tomorrow’s “astronaut playing drums” illustration from Backspacer’s cover art. All proceeds from sales of the shirt will benefit the Feeding America charity. According to the comments on the Pearl Jam Website, these shirts are pretty hard to find, so head on over to Target sooner rather than later.

I thought Tool’s “10,000 Days” trumped Pearl Jam in 2006. Maybe I’m mistaken though I don’t think so. Nonetheless, the news is great to hear.

The shirts are “hard to find”? Well, hit the Target in Bloomington, IN, which has over a dozen of them. And you can have mine. $20 for a shirt at Target that everyone will have? (At least everyone who cares enough.) No thanks. I respect the charity, and props to PJ for doing it, but I’m not dropping borderline concert-prices for a shirt at Target.

@ Coonrod

$20 = “borderline concert prices”? Who have you been to see lately?!

Cheesecrop | 9/24/2009, 8:25 pm EST

More power to them if they do hit #1. It’s a solid album across the board.

Last concert i went to was Foghatter, the Ultimate Foghat Tribute Band.

The best $20 i ever spent.

I went to pick up the cd at target on sunday the 20th(The day it came out) and they told me to come back on Tuesday. Anybody else have a problem?

SID | 9/25/2009, 3:43 am EST

A friend of mine had that problem: an employee told him they didn’t have PJ, yet there was a whole wall.

Do they ever release a bad record? This is up there with Ten and No Code as their best work for me.

Pearl Jam are the balls, always have been. this is just the latest example-great record, live shows should be kickin’ like a mule as usual. I’ll be seeing them next Wednesday in L.A. Rock on boys!

Coonrod | 9/25/2009, 4:45 pm EST

Not sure who posted with my name above, but whatever.

I mean T-shirt prices. As most of the big amphitheater/stadium shows I got to are day-long festivals, I can say that most shirts I see go for $15 (Warped Tour) to $25 (KPNT’s Pointfest, where you’ll pay the same price for Offspring and Chevelle shirts as you will Street Dogs shirts. Sure that’s helping SD move units.)

Yes, I know major acts (NIN, Green Day, etc.) charge up to $30 to $40 for a shirt these days. I just don’t care enough to drop that much anymore. Especially not when standing at a Target.

It just blew my mind that Ten didn’t make it Number 1.

suew | 9/27/2009, 12:58 am EST

I’ll never be disappointed with any of their music. They are the best live band touring.

Sandmandig | 9/28/2009, 2:07 am EST

I’ve been a soldier since 1993, I have either been too broke or too occupied with work to ever attend a Pearl Jam concert. If I ever get back to the US or Europe within striking distance of a show I’ll dammed if I have to shell out 50 bucks for a shirt or a months pay for a ticket.

If you want it, buy it. Don’t whip out a blame-thrower and blast the band, they earn every penny they get. As for Target.. they are just another cog on the capitalist wheel, wheels have to turn, we choose whether or not to grease it.

mike | 9/28/2009, 4:18 am EST

Its only because they were an unknown band when Ten came out, so it took a while to gain momentum.

Samoys | 10/3/2009, 12:35 pm EST

lot about you
