First Listen: Dead Man’s Bones’ “In The Room Where You Sleep”

With their psychedelic flourishes, suffocated vocals and lyrics featuring love stores about werewolves, ghosts and other creatures of the night, Dead Man’s Bones sound like the demon spawn of the Misfits, Bauhaus and the Zombies. The Los Angeles duo, comprised of actor Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, release their self-titled debut album on October 6th, and Rolling Stone has your first listen to the ghoulishly infectious track “In the Room Where You Sleep” right here:

Get a look at more actors who rock.

“In the Room Where You Sleep” could fit on either a psych-soaked Nuggets compilation or the soundtrack of a Vincent Price film. For a song that employs no electric guitars — in fact, no stringed instruments appear on the album at all — the track truly rocks. While the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music Children’s Choir feature prominently on the duo’s debut LP, and early versions of “In the Room Where You Sleep” included the choir, the final version finds Gosling and Shields painting the creepy picture themselves.

Dead Man’s Bones came together when Gosling and Shields met in Toronto while dating sisters in 2005. (Fun fact: actress Rachel McAdams and her sis Kayleen.) The pair shared a fascination with ghosts, so they began working on a monster love story for the stage. When that undertaking proved too great, they refocused what they had written and turned it into their debut album. Growing up in Canada, the Langley Schools Music Project — a choir featuring 60 untrained children singing songs of the era — served as a major inspiration for Gosling, and led him to recruit the Silver Lake Conservatory.

When Dead Man’s Bones embark on their first tour next month — the trek fittingly kicking off two weeks before Halloween — they will recreate the songs off their self-titled debut by employing a local choir from the cities they visit on their trek. To add to the old-time feel of the performance, each concert will feature a talent show in place of the traditional opening act.

just awful. sorry Ryan but this isn’t cutting it.

Phil | 9/22/2009, 1:09 pm EST

Am I the only one who thinks this track is crap..

mari | 9/22/2009, 1:50 pm EST

the live version is way better, this sounds really bad!

ron | 9/22/2009, 1:54 pm EST

damn totally ruined the song

Moose | 9/22/2009, 2:21 pm EST

Hard to believe this is the same song as the live version (which is awesome). Huge disappointment.

jeff / booooooom.com | 9/22/2009, 2:25 pm EST

this is awesome – everyone above me is on crack.

jenna | 9/22/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Its fuckin awesome!

Dave | 9/22/2009, 2:26 pm EST

This band is the coolest!!!
There is nothing else like it.

Amanda | 9/22/2009, 2:26 pm EST

whatever this song is awesome, but I do agree the live version is better with the kids in the background.

Adrienne | 9/22/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Live version is way better! They needed to split the difference. Keep the live feel minus those out of tune kids!

Dave | 9/22/2009, 2:49 pm EST

This band just got better cause this version of the song is totally weird and rad and they sound even better live! Keep it up gentlemen.

chelsea | 9/22/2009, 2:52 pm EST

The early live version was so much more full and contagious. This was not at all what we were expecting. I’ve been so excited. It’s too bad.

Dina | 9/22/2009, 2:53 pm EST

This band is really *different*. Cannot wait for the album. I like both versions.

Donna Jo | 9/22/2009, 4:00 pm EST

I have to agree with the others. The earlier version w/ the kids was better. But this one isn’t too bad. I’ll still be getting the album. Just wish they were coming somewhere near Baton Rouge, LA.. what a bummer.

M | 9/22/2009, 4:04 pm EST

The live version was amazing, especially Ryan’s singing. I still like this, but whoever mixed it didn’t do a very good job…why over process something that was beautiful on its own?

Lauren | 9/22/2009, 4:06 pm EST

This is great. Can’t wait.

Greg | 9/22/2009, 5:09 pm EST

The album is going to be amazing. These two nailed the sound they were aiming for. But I do agree the live, choir version is stronger.

L | 9/22/2009, 5:19 pm EST

The one good thing about these posts is that they definitely separate the tunnel-visioned-sell-outs from the monster-mashers who can appreciate authentic music. This is an awesome song no matter how you slice it, and I give props to the band for breathing new life to the undead.

Tate | 9/22/2009, 5:50 pm EST

It’s just ok

Eve Noir | 9/22/2009, 5:59 pm EST

hm, see, it’d be different if i heard this version first. had high expectations for it and it’s OK just not very similar to the rawness of the live version. and although the kids were out of tune, they added a nice touch. but i still think the album will be great.

And damn it Ryan, why no Detroit date!!??!! so sad. :(

llyanabuey | 9/22/2009, 6:10 pm EST

this is weak i didnt make it past the 30 sec mark so i skipped thru it and its all weak I hate how bands put out noise set to a beat and people get mad when we tell them it sucks i could fart over a clap track and get a melody better than this

mix | 9/22/2009, 6:23 pm EST

this release will be a masterpiece, no question.

AKM | 9/22/2009, 7:05 pm EST

An interesting mix of Retro/funk/gothic/rockabilly music done, surprisingly, well. I like the vibe and concept these guys went with

lauren | 9/22/2009, 7:06 pm EST

so i agree the live version def. kicks ass, but this is pretty legit. haven’t heard anything like it in such a long time.

zombeegee | 9/22/2009, 7:31 pm EST

They should have kept the kids in it, thats what made it so creepy..this sounds like a cheap knock off of the other song..the other one gave me chills, this one just feels awkward and over worked..which i thought was the opposite of what they were going for…go back please, before you turn out to be another celebrity has been band..it was too good to mess with.

monstermashyourface | 9/22/2009, 7:38 pm EST

to “L”..so, because people share a different view they are labeled as tunnel vision and assumed to not be true “monster mashers”…interesting. anyway, I can appreciate what they are going for, but the first take was the direction they should have stayed in. they were a little off beat, and the choir as well..but honestly who else could have pulled that off..it was beautiful. this track is decent, but its not as catching. if the other track didnt exist i would have pushed it aside…but i will have hopes for a release of the live song elsewhere? its just not the same..they should have kept the lower tone of ryans voice, kept it slow like before and worked with the kids a bit more..then added a few more keys and whatnot and polished there technique not add click tracks and extra audio..its kind of unnecessary..

cjw | 9/22/2009, 9:42 pm EST

I bet they’re really big fans of that monster mash song. It reminds me of the stuff my friend makes when he’s high. I’m going to tell everyone Ryan Gosling is a huge stoner now (and his friend is too… fine). I’ll say I saw it on E! because Ryan’s celebrity is the only reason we’re hearing this.

Still Excited | 9/22/2009, 10:51 pm EST

It’s obviously different than the live version, but I really think both are good in their own way. This has more of a “Monster Mash” Halloween party kind of feel if I had to relate it to anything. It makes me want to watch Hocus Pocus.

Anonymous | 9/22/2009, 10:56 pm EST

Yeah, the live version was far better… I hope they don’t do this to their other already great songs like “Paper Ships,” “Dead Man’s Bones,” and “Name In Stones.” Either way, this particular song is an incredibly frustrating disappointment. It’s not terrible, just not as fucking unbelievable as previous releases.

N | 9/22/2009, 11:02 pm EST

L, you’re post is a foolish jumble of meaningless locution. And it’s unbelievably condescending. (Yes, I recognize the irony.) Anyway, this song was certainly ruined with this recording, but I definitely have not lost hope considering all they have previously done. I just think that this recording goes against there original idea of making music just to do it rather than to make it on the fridge.

kill the industry | 9/22/2009, 11:08 pm EST

This is junk…. look up a couple of old CDN bands called Deja Voodoo and Nash the Slash… that is if you want to hear this stuff done right….

Kelby | 9/23/2009, 12:52 am EST

Deam Man’s Bones is awesome!! I think both styles of the track are awesome. Though the studio version isn’t quite as great as the live version…at least we know they are better live!! Can’t wait for the album!!!

Kelby | 9/23/2009, 12:53 am EST

*Dead

BaRON VON | 9/23/2009, 1:52 am EST

Both the live version and record version are their own thing, more props to them! He hasnt put out an album yet and already he hasnt pigeon holed himself. (like those above already have.) Cant wait to buy the cd.

Allegory Weekly | 9/23/2009, 2:20 am EST

I’ve never heard the live version. But I’m currently listening to this version. Do I care that they sound different? No. But my tarot cards told me that I’m destined to meet and marry Ryan Gosling. So I comment wherever I feel his eyes may take him.

GG | 9/23/2009, 10:55 am EST

Maybe I need to hear the live version to get it.

Queen of Nowhere | 9/23/2009, 2:10 pm EST

I prefer the live version with the children’s choir – but this one also has something special about it.

oh | 9/23/2009, 2:21 pm EST

this is really diferent, i didn’t except that they will change it so heavily. though i prefer the live version, this is also not that bad. fresh

Anonymous | 9/23/2009, 3:08 pm EST

live version is so much better. don’t process it so much :(

Coryn | 9/23/2009, 3:14 pm EST

I’m still a fan for sure…but it’s a completely song without the kids choir! They really added to the whole sound. I hope they don’t take the kids out of the “My Body’s a Zombie For you” final recording. I’m looking forward to the album!

Yulia | 9/23/2009, 3:44 pm EST

Guys, I don’t understand all of you! You say… why not Detroit or not Baton Rouge…. Well you at least live in USA! Well… I’m from Russia and can’t even dream to see these guys on stage! :D So… get your *** up and do your best to see their show! :) ))))) PS I totally adore this song even w/o children! Ryan and Zach, thanx for opening such an interesting genre for me!

Allegory Weekly | 9/23/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Right on, Yulia! Ryan, I still love you. Let’s have creepy, post-modern, future-primitive children conceived from our mutual love of necromance. Or, you know, a date at the Grove in L.A. I don’t care. Looking forward to your release. Woo-hoo!

Anonymous | 9/23/2009, 9:12 pm EST

On second thoughts, this recording still is very much the shit. It’s just incredibly disappointing compared to their other, earlier recordings that are simply fantastic. This begins to lack the feeling that related them to bands like Man Man and Austin James Band. But even if all the songs are like this, it’ll still be amazing. Also a big disappointment. But I suppose if they changed their style for us it would go against there original plan. So, I respect them for this.

nadia | 9/24/2009, 1:08 pm EST

I agree with yulia I’m in the uk and wish they were coming here but sadly they arent but i really hope they do and i like both versions but you can hear ryans vocals better in the live version and he has a great voice.

Kasha | 9/27/2009, 1:53 am EST

If you live in the UK, you can see Beirut, Belle& Sebastian, and so many other great bands much easier… This is the rare occasion. But this recording is a disappointment. Should be great still! And I’m hoping Dead Man’s Bones comes to Georgia sometime soon!

Tyla | 9/27/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Weird, this sounds like drug music…it would only sound decent if high.

Michele | 9/28/2009, 6:44 pm EST

Wow! I wasn’t expecting it to be such a huge difference from the live version with the children’s choir, but I gotta say, I’m liking this recorded version better! This version has more of the old time, monster mash-up feel to it. My hat is off to Zach and Ryan who have done something truly unique, and I think this genre is a perfect fit for them, and they will do wonders for it over the years. I can’t wait to hear more, and I just got my tickets for the Philly show!

sid | 9/28/2009, 8:15 pm EST

zach seileds is my gym teachers son.this is so cool.nice song

vicky | 10/5/2009, 9:50 pm EST

I love the band, but the song is so much better in the live version whith the children´s choir.
I love Ryan´s voice is so sexy!!!!

Jo | 10/9/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Ryan should stick to acting.

Captain Morgan | 10/13/2009, 4:19 pm EST

the house band for the munsters.

Sarah Ruth | 10/15/2009, 10:15 am EST

Went to see them last night. AWESOME. The set, childrens choir, and truly unique sound gave me goosebumps. Check it out if you can! Don’t judge by this one song. A+

Jimmie | 10/15/2009, 11:56 pm EST

The person above me wets the bed

The person below is in the Witness Protection Program
