Smashing Pumpkins Reveal New LP “Teargarden By Kaleidyscope”

9/16/09, 5:53 pm EST

Billy Corgan took to Smashing Pumpkins’ official Website today to reveal that the barely recognizable band has begun work on a massive new 44-song album called Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. You’d figure it’d be a while between now and when you’ll hear the fruits of the Pumpkins’ labors, but Corgan also revealed on an innovative release plan that’ll allow fans to freely download the songs as the band finishes them.

“My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached,” Corgan writes. “Free will mean free, which means you won’t have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish.”

We know Corgan isn’t the most conventional rocker, but to release an entire album of 44 songs for free? That’s extreme. However, Corgan knows his audience, and he knows that there are thousands of fans eager to purchase one or all eleven of the limited-edition four song EPs he plans to carve out of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. When the album is completely finished, all 44 songs will be packed into a single Kaleidyscope box set. For those plotting to skip the EP process and wait for the complete set, Corgan foils that plan by writing “the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces.”

With an album called Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, an instant entry into our Raditude-inspired list of Dictionary-Defying Album Titles, you’d expect Corgan to have an interesting tale to back the title, and Billy doesn’t disappoint. “The story of the album is based on ‘The Fool’s Journey’, as signified in the progress of the Tarot,” Corgan writes. “It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic.” So essentially he’s making a Hawkwind album, or an LP that “harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.”

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Teargarden will be the first SP LP to feature new teenage drummer Mike Byrne, who auditioned for and ultimately won the position of Pumpkins’ drummer after the exodus of Jimmy Chamberlin. Ironically enough, Chamberlin left the Pumpkins after being unable to “cash the check,” and by releasing an album for free, Corgan might not have a check to cash.

Wow. This sounds extremely promising, especially the part about “harkening back to the bands psychedelic roots.”

I think Corgan produces his best music when he sets his goals high, as opposed to Zeitgeist, where, according to Jimmy, was about keeping it simple, and not getting to “artsy.”

This is awesome! | 9/16/2009, 6:41 pm EST

I can’t wait. I am very excited about this album, but also I am very interested in the completely innovative way of getting new music. Each month’s anticipation should be very different than getting one album per year (or three).

argonaut | 9/16/2009, 6:42 pm EST

I was disappointed with the last SP effort. I was hoping for “artsy” and assumed with Billy being as pretentious as he is that I would indeed get that wonderful “artsy” album… .. Infinite Sadness was great stuff… especially those songs over 7 minutes. I hope there will be songs like that on the new efforts.

PSYCHEEEED!

Expect the Spanish Inquisition | 9/16/2009, 7:45 pm EST

Between the length, the artwork and the title, it kinda has a Mellon Collie vibe. If there’s anything even *remotely* like some of the stuff that was on that album (by far their best and most accessible), then color me curious.

I am a Smashing Pumpkins fan throughout. I like the fact that Billy is creating a new way to distribute music. I can’t wait to download the first track. I also hope Billy release all his new tracks that he has been writing (Question, Owata, etc.). I like to hear all the art and it is impossible to be at every concert. I will buy each of the EPs and the boxed set. I really hope this is successful as he is such a talented songwriter. It may change the music industry.

Pumpkin Head | 9/16/2009, 9:49 pm EST

I’m Crazy excited about this, I’m a mega Pumpkin fan. This smells of Mellon Collie. Billy’s got his pretentious pants on and that’s where he does his best work. I’m gonna download the songs then get the box set. Halloween can’t come fast enough

reggaeluv | 9/16/2009, 11:35 pm EST

this will be a timeless masterpiece :)
you can feel the excitement in the air for this album

I lost contact with the Pumpkins after ‘96, and I was only 10 years old then. Hopefully they harken hardcore their ‘93-’96 roots.

S.O. | 9/17/2009, 10:17 am EST

Their last album was ok, but new effort “harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.” Then count me in.

I haven’t enjoyed any Pumpkins music since Adore. I’ve pretty much given up on them. Especially now that 3/4 of the band is gone.

PRETENTIOUS x 1,000.

kels | 9/17/2009, 11:50 am EST

From the s/t cassette (”Jennifer Ever” still is among their best) through Adore – the Pumpkins output was near perfect. Machina II and Zwan were also stellar. So, we can forgive the solo album and Zeitgeist and welcome king Billy back with all his WTF song-title glory. Would I like to see D’arcy, James and Jimmy (and even that dude from Yum Yum) back in the fold – hell yeah. They were to Billy what the Revolution was to Prince.

Jill | 9/17/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Only real Pumpkin heads would get suckered in this. Hopefully, there are still left out there because poor Billy’s ego won’t be able to take it if there are no takers for what he has worked on and given free.

anotherjill | 9/17/2009, 1:42 pm EST

I am looking forward to this massively cool undertaking.

CynthiaJill | 9/17/2009, 1:47 pm EST

This is the coolest album concept I have heard of in years.

Fail | 9/17/2009, 2:42 pm EST

I love the pumpkins, though Billy’s ranting can make it difficult sometimes. I really hope we don’t get 39 demo tapes of songs Billy wrote in 15 minutes and 5 quality songs. I will however give him props for putting himeself out there and giving away his music.

Fail | 9/17/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Jill wrote “Only real Pumpkin heads would get suckered in this.” I’m not sure what he is trying to sucker us into when he is giving his music away for free.

I love everything SP ever did. Even if I was indifferent about some of the material upon the first couple of listens and I would put it down for a while, I eventually would find it was those albums that would become the beloved staples of my collection. I didn’t love Zietgiest till almost a year after it’s release. Now I still listen to it all the time. I wore Machina I & II out in the same way. I learned to put aside my preconceived notions of what a new SP album should be and just let it express it’s own thing. This new album, I’m willing to bet will blow my mind and others for sure, even if I it needs time to express it’s own invaluable artistic worth.

Go Billy!

Kims Deeler | 9/17/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Billy recently lost me due to his treatment of his fans, but this is redemption at its highest level.

tampaSPfan | 9/18/2009, 11:10 am EST

I haven’t seen the fan base this energized since Jimmy came back for the brief Arising tour, shortly before D’arcy left and Machina came out. I’m hoping for a new SP Golden Age. If the level of fun, energy, and beauty from the Spirits in The Sky endeavor is any indicator, we should have nothing to complain about when the songs start churning out.

Jono | 9/18/2009, 9:26 pm EST

Pumpkin haters… Billy just cooked your crow.

Chow it down like the weasels you are.

Phillip | 9/24/2009, 1:36 pm EST

Wow. You know what? I wasn’t aware that Billy had tarnished the SP name until you guys singled him out. In my personal opinion, I liked all of their work, old and new. So to me, there is no difference.

Well | 9/24/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I love SP and this sounds like a really great idea for them to do. Unfortunately and sadly for me, I’m skeptic about it. I know without Jimmy, Adore was amazing. But entrusting the Smashing Pumpkins rebirth to a 19 year old kid who is replacing one of the most talented drummer of the 90’s? I think the first few tracks they release will set the pace and show us what we are in store for.

And | 9/24/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Yeah guys, this is pretty much a rebirth. Zeitgeist was good, but it was kind of the same path Machina was. This is a total rebirth back to the Gish-Mellon Collie era. Back to them being on the map. We’ll have to see how he plays.

Maynard's Dick | 10/15/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Wow, that artwork sure looks a lot like Alex Grey’s art from Tool’s Lateralus album… The design featuring a human within another human’s head, the flaming eye, even the two pictures look like they should superimpose over one another a la the multiple layers of Lateralus. Billy will need 44 songs to try and rival such a quality album like Lateralus.

Patrick | 10/25/2009, 1:33 am EST

Good thing Billy knows that this is make or break time. One redemptive shot to restore everyones faith…I really hope Billy makes good on it. Because this is really it.

P | 11/11/2009, 7:13 pm EST

this album has La Dolly Vita written all over it.
Check out When the Cock Crows on YouTube. This is what its gonna sound like and I like it.
