MTV’s 2009 VMAs Pull Nine Million Viewers, Best Ratings Since ‘04

A shade under nine million viewers tuned into this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, meaning that the VMAs’ largest television audience since 2004 tuned in to see Kanye West steal the spotlight from Taylor Swift. Of course, also helping MTV to their best ratings in years was news that Janet Jackson would star in a tribute to her brother Michael at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, while the trailer for the upcoming documentary for Jackson’s This Is It was also premiered. In addition to the 8.97 million viewers, the VMAs’ also became the Number One cable program this year for the much-desired 12-34 demographic, Variety reports.

Viewers were up six percent compared to the VMAs, something that seems even more impressive when you factor in what the 2009 broadcast was up against: The opening Sunday of the NFL season, tennis’ U.S. Open and the season finale of True Blood, which probably sapped some of the audience eagerly awaiting the VMA’s debut of the New Moon trailer. By comparison, the 2006 Video Music Awards, the last time the show was staged at Radio City Music Hall, claimed only 5.76 million viewers.

Weren’t one of the nine million viewers on Sunday night? Rolling Stone has all your essential coverage over at our VMA hub, featuring photos, a live blog, Madonna’s tribute to Michael Jackson and the complete rundown on Kanyegate 2009.

I’d be interested in seeing how the 2004 audience numbers compare to their numbers in the mid-90’s…you know, back when they played music videos? This show is a joke and so is MTV…

Anonymous | 9/15/2009, 2:58 pm EST

I actually enjoyed it. I haven’t watched since the 90’s when the likes of Metallica and Pearl Jam graced their stage.

Great show this year. Madonna gave an awesome speach (long live the Queen of Pop!), Janet’s performance was moving and I loved P!nk, Beyonce and Muse. GaGa started off cool but the blood made her look like she was trying to hard. Oh well, guess thats what they deserve when they over-hype something to be a “Madonna like performance”, it just feels like a cheaper Madge knockoff. Regardless great show for a change except for Kanye being a d-bag but what else is new.

Too dumb for TV | 9/15/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Kanye made a bad move that will play against his own music career. To take someone else’s moment is beyond immoral, its just plain ignorant. And Im sorry, people are tired of Beyonce in one piece bathing suits and doing her butt dance, people want to see something new and more alive than the music they are singing to. I have seen taylor swifts video and its exactly what 17 yr old girls want to see and its what they like! No wonder she won and beat Beyonce. She deserved it and Kanye deserved to be humiliated on Jay Leno. I bet his love will be locked down for a while!

Lila | 9/15/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Well I think Kanye West is an a**h***.

Lila | 9/15/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Kany west Sucks

kc | 9/15/2009, 4:57 pm EST

why would kayne do such a thing that was totally irresponsible and just plain wrong

Pam | 9/15/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Kanye should apologize to Janet Jackson too because this show was supposed to honor Michael Jackson but now the media seems to think your stunt deserves more attention.
The show had the highest view since 2004 (mainly because of the tribute) so plenty of people got to see him (try to)ruin the moment
for Taylor.

bitney fan | 9/15/2009, 5:07 pm EST

i would of loved to see brintey spears. the show would of been so much better if she was there… they led it on so much she was going to be there…. bull shi* she wasnt there!! im pissed but happy she won best pop video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

The tribute for Michael Jackson by Janet was moving as well the speech by Madonna. MJ’s influence on pop music and music videos was so immense. I still cannot believe that he is gone. I am looking forward to seeing ‘This is It!”. There are some people who will always criticize MJ but the critics come and go. MJ’s music has stood the test of time and always will!

Timothy | 9/15/2009, 5:41 pm EST

THANKS ROLLING STONES I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO SAY THIS, BUT WHEN FOLK FOUND OUT THAT JANET JACKSON WAS OPENING THE SHOW, THATS WHEN THE SHOW GOT INTERESTING, MICHAEL TRIBUTE AND JANET PUT THESE RATINGS UP!! THIS IS HOW IT WAS BACK IN THE DAY WHEN YOU HAD JANET, MADONNA, MICHAEL, PRINCE, WHITNEY OPENING UP AWARD SHOWS, THESE SHOWS NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE LEGENDS, CAUSE THE YOUNG FOLK DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO IT, I WANTED EVERY ONE OF THOSE YOUNG ARTIST TO TAKE OUT A PIN AND PIECE OF PAPER TO TAKE NOTES FROM BOTH THE QUEEN OF POP “JANET & MADONNA”. JANET SHUT THE SHOW DOWN, I HEARD ALOT PEOPLE SAY THAT AFTER JANET PERFORMED THEY TURNED TO SOMETHING ELSE.

Mike | 9/15/2009, 5:50 pm EST

Wow!!!!!!!!! So all one have to do is mention that a “Legendary Jackson” is going to perform. I agree with Rolling Stones, Janet & Michael tribute is what brought those ratings in cause people want to see Janet dance, and then knowing she was gonna do something spectacular for her brother. “Janet is the Goddess of music” “Michael is the Greatest Entertainer ever lived”

sobia | 9/15/2009, 6:59 pm EST

Just because of Michael Jackson.

Anonymous | 9/15/2009, 7:16 pm EST

I agree. I watched simply for the MJ tribute. What a plesant surprise it was to hear Madonna’s moving comments! Isn’t it funny that a station that seldom even plays videos anymore has an award show for them? Get back to your roots, MTV

em | 9/15/2009, 7:37 pm EST

Would have enjoyed the Killers Spaceman performance…the guys sucked this year. Thank goodness for the ladies.

Karen | 9/15/2009, 9:06 pm EST

Kanye should also apologize to Janet his stunt over shadowed this AMAZING MJ tribute.

DeeLee | 9/15/2009, 10:25 pm EST

I am a HUGE Janet fan and it was so awesome to see her moving tribute to her brother. My only gripe is that after the ‘wardrobe malfunction’ MTV wouldn’t give JJ the time of day and didn’t support the release of her record. Now her performance and tribute was one of the reason’s this year’s VMAs got so many viewers.

URDADDY | 9/15/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Can someone tell me what the f@#$ was Russell Brand Saying?

Keral | 9/16/2009, 1:31 am EST

I’m just so disappointed that one a**hole was able to hijack the best tribute to Michael ever. I was looking foward to reading and watching all about that on the internet and tv.Injustice to all that won also.

Zena | 9/16/2009, 3:32 am EST

If it wasn’t for MJ’s tribute had better things to do than watch the show! Considering MJ re-invented music videos in form of short films and made MTV a success (back when it was great) MTV owed him big time! Janet, Madonna, the dancers and the trailer were all awesome! But MTV should have done a little something extra for him… at least a montage of MJ! Hope the Grammy’s do a better job for their biggest winner in their history!

sca | 9/16/2009, 7:24 am EST

Michael – we want you back! Too bad MTV didn’t have a live internet feed. There were millions more who wanted to watch but couldn’t. Pony up guys.

jasmine | 9/16/2009, 12:07 pm EST

Weffie | 9/16/2009, 4:07 pm EST

The MJ tribute was the only reason I watched, but the show was fun. I liked what Green Day had to say about the videos – bring them back! Of course now people surf the net more to watch videos, etc. than they tune into TV for it.

Weffie | 9/16/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Lady Gaga is talented, but her performance was disgusting at the end. The funny thing is that she projects the Madonna persona quite a bit and one of her videos takes place in the subway station and looks a heck a lot like the Bad video.

Anonymous | 9/16/2009, 6:45 pm EST

Michael literally made TV. Janet was there to support her brother and only to do that. Everyone knows that the MTV Awards have been lame for years, They were literally turning Michael into a joke by literally dissing him since 2000. I am glad that they came to their senses and left the door open for Janet to make her brother and family proud.

jane | 9/17/2009, 3:29 am EST

Anyone notice all the satanic and masonic imagery displayed? This seemed rather odd for also a memorial for the king of pop.

tdrizzlezizzle | 9/17/2009, 3:43 am EST

OMG lady gagy is sooo amazing…wtf u mean it was gross at the end….she is sooo creative…beautiful…and such a free spirit.that performance was art!

ryan | 9/17/2009, 4:20 am EST

i only watched to see anet and Im so glad i did. She shut it down. she nailed it!

Brit | 9/17/2009, 4:39 am EST

i only tned in to see Janet Jackson’s performance and i loved it. She definitely shut it down! that was the highlight for me!!!

Mr. Sancho | 9/17/2009, 9:55 am EST

the show was great until kanye west fxcx all up. I was glad to see pitbull representing LATINOS

Roger P | 9/17/2009, 11:56 pm EST

I watched the show again yeserday night as I recorded it earlier since I had to leave house for an urgent meeting..and Boy -o – boy wasn’t I entertained again…

Those who bitches abt this show is just so WRONG…It was amazingly entertaining and probably the best award event I have seen in a long time…what else do u expect from an award show..the MJ tribute was the highlight of the show..Madonna was looking stunning and was amazingly gracious, Beyonce was superb..always smiling and looking gorgeous, Pink surprised everyone with her death defying stunts..something u won’t expect a singer to do on stage while singing…and Alicia Keys was mindblowing with JayZ in the finale..This was perfect, unadulterated entertainment and MTV this year has just raised the bar for award show presentations which, i just wish , Oscar and Grammy’s follow which has become such a bore in last few years !!!

Kate | 9/19/2009, 3:01 pm EST

Correction MTV . . . NO ONE tuned in to see Kanye. The rise in viewers was completely due to Janet and MJ’s movie trailer . . . this was the ONLY reason for the bump in viewers. The wonderful surprize was Madonna’s tribute. Michael Jackson was the only reason that the VMA’s enjoyed a higher rating.

SIdewalkSurfer | 9/21/2009, 11:18 am EST

Eveyone knows that MTV jumped the shark a decade ago. If you want music, you have to look elsewhere. The “industry” rewards substandard performances. Indeed, here we have an award show celebrating music videos, right? Then why were ALL the live performances lipsynced? Here’s why — the performers can’t carry a tune, or remember their own lyrics. We all know that what MTV shoves in your face isn’t music. It’s side-show entertainment. The stranger, the better. The more leg you show, the better you’re perceived. It’s pole dancing — not music. Sure, nine million people tuned-in. MTV’s a car wreck with no shortage of rubber-neckers.

CARLETTA | 9/21/2009, 10:54 pm EST

WE ALL KNOW WHY MTV’S AWARDS SHOW HAD HIGHER RATING, IT WAS NOT BECAUSE OF KANYE (NOONE KNEW THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN,BUT WE DID KNOW THAT JANET WAS GOING TO PAY TRIBUTE TO HER BROTHER,THE ONE AND ONLY MICHAEL JOE JACKSON..SO THERE GET IT RIGHT AND GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE…MTV AWARDS ARE ALWAYS BORING ,SO THANKS TO THE LATE MICHAEL JACKSON AND HIS SISTER FOR THE INCREASED RATINGS..GOODBYE…

CARLETTA | 9/21/2009, 11:00 pm EST

I AGREE WITH THE ONE THAT SAID WE SHOULD GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TALENT AND LEGENDS,THEY KNOW HOW TO ENTERTAIN WITH GRACE AND CLASS.BRITNEY SPEARS HAS NO TALENT ,SO WE DID NOT MISS ANYTHING BY HER NOT PERFORMING..OH AND BY THE WAY MTV MICHAEL JACKSON CAME TO YOUR RESCUE ONCE AGAIN EVEN IN DEATH…

CARLETA | 9/21/2009, 11:06 pm EST

AFTER JANET’S TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL ,I FLIPPED THE CHANNEL AND FLIPPED BACK IN TIME TO SEE BEYONCE PERFORM. THEY WERE THE BEST FOR THE SHOW..JAY -Z IS NOT THAT GREAT BUT NEW YORK LOVES HIM AND I AIN;T MAD AT EM..NEW YORK ROCKS AND WHAT THEY LIKE IS IT AND ALL THAT MATTERS.. I WISH I WAS FROM NEW YORK ..NEW YORKERS STICK TOGETHER AND THAT ‘S GOOD.. GO NEW YORKERS I LOVE YALL..

Ray Ray | 9/22/2009, 12:12 pm EST

I only watched to see Janet pay tribute to her brother cause I knew she would shut it down and she did with class, She is the true Queen Of Pop….

Stefan | 10/18/2009, 4:59 pm EST

I cant believe they dedicated a whole show for MJ. Many talents have past away without much recognition and then MJ dies and suddenly its frontline news? I think its stupid!

sc341 | 10/29/2009, 1:30 am EST

I’m still missing Michael and have the tribute on my Tivo. Janet did an awesome tribute for her brother. He’ll never be forgotten.
