Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” Trailer Premieres at VMAs

The trailer for This Is It — the documentary capturing rehearsal footage for what would have been Michael Jackson’s epic return to the stage — premiered as the finale of the 2009 Video Music Awards. It was a spectacular preview of what fans can expect to see October 28th when the film hits theaters for a two week engagement. “This is an adventure, a great adventure,” Jackson says of his show in the two-in-a-half-minute trailer. “We want to take them places that they’ve never before. We want to show them a time that they’ve never seen before.” In case you missed it, the trailer has been posted on the ThisIsIt-Movie.com site.

With apologies to vets like U2 and Madonna, based on the trailer, Michael Jackson’s This Is It show looks like it would’ve been the greatest stage show of all time. Between the songs, the costumes, the green screen effects, the massive and breathtaking sets, the videos — and of course, Jackson’s patented moves — director Kenny Ortega will be hard-pressed to pack the hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage into the film’s reported two-and-a-half hour running time.

Michael Jackson: A Look Back at King of Pop’s Life and Career

The trailer provides of glimpse of how involved Jackson was in the planning of This Is It as he’s seen coordinating dance moves and mapping out bass lines. And despite reports that Jackson’s health was failing in the weeks prior to his death on June 25th, the trailer shows Jackson in peak performance form as he dances his way through “Smooth Criminal” and “Man in the Mirror.” Jackson is seen in good spirits throughout in the behind-the-scenes footage, a far cry from the portrait that’s been painted of the King of Pop since his death.

Michael Jackson Photos From “This Is It!” Rehearsals Emerge

“This is a dream come true. When MJ comes into the room, his presence is amazing,” said guitarist Orianthi — who featured prominently alongside dancer/singer Judith Hill at the Michael Jackson memorial concert at Los Angeles’ Staples Center — of Jackson at Los Angeles’ The Forum and Staples Center, where the footage from This Is It was filmed.

“It’s all for love,” Jackson says of the concerts at the end of the trailer, reiterating just how dedicated he was to what was to be his great comeback. “L-O-V-E.” Unfortunately, the concerts never made it to the O2 Arena stage in London, but This Is It should prove to be a worthy document of the King of Pop’s vision and peerless legacy.

The 2009 VMAs were largely dedicated to Jackson, opening with a moving speech by Madonna in which she called Jackson “a hero.” Janet Jackson also took the stage for a powerful number that paid tribute to his innovative dance moves.

Look back at the Michael Jackson tributes and more of the VMAs’ memorable moments.

I am so heartbroken to see the trailer because it shows his magical creative genius and he didn’t get to live for his creation to take place. I am so grateful to Madonna for telling the truth tonight at the VMAs. MJ was lynched by a witch hunt and everybody turned their back on him. We all abandoned him. And it is so cruel that he died just on the verge of the greatest comeback/stage show ever made.

Travis | 9/14/2009, 12:51 am EST

The footage was amazing, I am excited to go see this movie in theaters. I’m already intrigued just based on the trailer! Michael Jackson is amazing and he really was a genius at creating mind blowing concerts. This would have been one of the best ever!

Shamone | 9/14/2009, 1:26 am EST

This is the saddest thing. I am crying. He didn’t live to fulfill his dream, his dream for us. He also didn’t live to fulfill his dreams for himself, his kids and his musical ambition. This is is loss that’s never going to be fulfilled.

All I can say is that MJ, I love you, I always will.

hope | 9/14/2009, 1:32 am EST

MJ still had it!!

Kate | 9/14/2009, 1:34 am EST

MJ certainly looked in fine form just weeks and days before his death. It’s heartbreaking to see, I look forward to the movie. Madonna was correct in saying “we abandoned him . . .” It’s cruel that he died B4 his comeback, but if it’s any solace at all – he died knowing that all of his concerts were SOLD OUT !

veel | 9/14/2009, 1:58 am EST

this was beautiful

Mohammad | 9/14/2009, 3:04 am EST

GOD BLESS MICHAEL… You’re the King… We will always love you… Im gonna watch the Movie/Documentary everyday that its out in the Theaters. God Bless you.

janicebyrne | 9/14/2009, 3:04 am EST

What a great and sad loss to this world. Michael Jackson was the first and, always will be, THE BEST…EVER. RIP Michael Jackson. Very greatly loved and missed. ALWAYS.

NancyE | 9/14/2009, 3:56 am EST

I am so heartbroken watching the trailer. This proves a huge of Mike and how genius he was. THE greatest among the greatest. This will be the most anticipated movie of the year. He was such A PERFECTIONIST and will never be another Michael Jackson in this world again! LONG LIVE THE KING!

Tiara | 9/14/2009, 4:16 am EST

I am still sad he left the world so soon by the people who have been still cheated and lied and took advantages from him all his life. Those who call ed themselves friends of his, Mark Lester – the desperated man, those doctors, relatives, people in show bizz, jounalists. Each and everyone. Bless Michael, i know now you be as peaceful as you wish for.

Tiara | 9/14/2009, 4:23 am EST

Agree with those comments. Michael was so genuis and great and dedicated. He looked very fine before the day passed away. Those bad doctors and bad journalists who lied to him and made stories up to get his money and did not have enough should be exposed and sentenced to jail. They made the innocent and kind and warm and harmless ever never died. What do the fan of Michael think?

Steve | 9/14/2009, 4:40 am EST

WOW, did he still have it, alot of people doubted him when he said he was doing a comeback, Michael proved em wrong, he didn’t just still have it, from this clip it looks like he improved on what he already had. AMAZING. I’m glad this film is here, it can show the critics he was just as relevant in the 2000’s as he was in the 80’s

Anonymous | 9/14/2009, 6:41 am EST

Looks O.K I guess…just another way of exploiting his death

Won’t hold a candle to The Last Waltz

M.M | 9/14/2009, 6:54 am EST

No matter what the tabloids say about the state of MJs health leading up to his concerts Mj was looking forward to his chance to prove that he still was the king of pop and totally on top of his game. Can’t wait to see the movie!

juan | 9/14/2009, 8:44 am EST

WOW THAT TRAILER WAS THE SHIT!!! im not gonna lie it brought tears to my eyes. Michael was and forever will be THE KING OF POP. Michael had such magic & it looked like he lit up the room when he walked in. i cant wait to go see the movie in theaters. he was more than a HERO, he was a LEGEND…”heros get remembered, but legends never die” i hope my baby boy can enjoy his music, voice, and dance moves in hevan as much as we did on earth.I never got a chance to meet or see either of them but i know i will one day. may they both R.I.P and i will always take them with me in my heart. FOREVER AND ALWAYS

Kathy | 9/14/2009, 10:12 am EST

Michael Jackson was simply FANTASTIC!!The trailer proved that Michael still had the magic in him,as he had when he was 24..He’s the King of Pop!No doubt,no one is going to take over his place..Madonna,herself called him the King-what more to say!!He was and will always be the greatest..A musical genius who had so much to share with the world..He was a GLOBAL SUPERSTAR!!I LOVE YOU MICHAEL JACKSON..AND I WILL DEFINITELY CATCH THE MOVIE!!

Sparkles | 9/14/2009, 10:22 am EST

So very sad. Michael looked so sick and all it would have taken was a couple people to go in front of a judge and have him forced into rehab. He would not have made it. You can see a difference in his appearance from the time he announced concert to rehearsals? How could his friends/mgrs not see this- it is so obvious? Yes he was dancing, but thats what he did the best without a doubt, but to us anything would have looked great because we dont have his talent. It just breaks my heart that the most incredibly talented man is gone all because something so obvious was overlooked for years and years!

Deborahffrench | 9/14/2009, 11:13 am EST

Michael Jackson, for me, is perhaps the greatest artist of all time. He personifies the highest meaning of that word -where the personal human being and the artist collide in a profound and real way. Artists such as Michael do not come along that often but when they do, the world takes note. They leave their blood and guts on the stages they step on, they move us and we are changed by that. In a world now dominated by reality stars and PR teams, Michael represents the last truly devastating, brave, world talent. So different off-stage to his on stage prescence that people at first thought his shyness was an act, when he performed he transformed into a master of movement and sound. And that did something, that has effect – not tangible at first – he came inside our hearts and sang our humanity back to us. For me, when he died, it has been a remembrance of that – and it has been very painful. But yet it shows the power of music and the power of shared memory; we always loved him – we just didn’t know how much. The full magnitude of what Michael gave and would have kept on giving had he not essentially been profoundly affected by the turbulence that erupted from 1993 onwards is a matter of public record (See details on that below.)It is disgusting that even after we have all witnessed the palpable grief of Paris, Katherine, Maccauley, Janet, Brooke, Stevie etc, the countless tributes, the outpouring of love from the entire globe, one would think some degree of sensitivity, some sense of reflection or atonement from the media would be forthcoming. Not at all. There has been something akin to a blackout silence about the real issues that concern those of us who have watched the media and Tom Sneddon erode and degrade this man’s spirit for over 15 years. Namely, why was Tom Sneddon’s personal vendetta against the then biggest pop star on the planet, seen as reason enough to allow him to spend millions of taxpayer’s money persecuting a man with shockingly non-credible accusers at the heart of both allegations. Jordan Chandler no longer speaks to his father, who is on record stating his aim was to get as money as possible from Michael. Most tragically, Jordan only accused Michael after being given a hypnotic drug long discredited by the medical profession. The effects of this trauma on both Michael and Jordan are too monstrous to even imagine for most of us, but Michael lived it -everyday. Even his emphatic acquital in 2005 was not enough to silence the malicious tongues public opinion, and the strain on on his health was only too apparent. Instead, the media continues to serve up the worst kind of insinuations on Michael’s character without thought to its effect on his children, family, friends and indeed his legacy itself. Diane Dimond vomits filth about him every night on CNN, Ian Halpern writes and gets paid to disseminate lies, and Peter King and Bill O’Reilly’s comments are beyond indecent. Meanwhile fans and ordinary people who kept an open mind and appreciated this legend for what he gave this planet for over four decades feel powerless and unheard. I urge all who do not know what this man contributed to the upliftment of people’s lives to inform themselves. PIgnore the ‘fan langauage’ of the site and just look at the facts of his contributions – they are unprecedented. There is also a great article by Mary A. Fischer first posted in GQ magazine entitled ‘Was Michael Jackson Framed?’ that is both informative and compelling. Please also see Brian Oxman’s ‘Supernova’ article in The Huffington Post. And please, whatever you do, pass on this post. Lets use the media as it should be used – to inform and educate. Resolution 600 is not dead in the water – it’s just sleeping.

Grace | 9/14/2009, 11:16 am EST

The trailer is A-MA-ZING! Michael, you are amazing!

Dr. Murder robbed all of us of what could have been the greatest show ever. I’d love to inject the quack doctor with an anesthetic and leave him for an hour. And even then it still won’t bring Michael back. =’(

To "anonymous" | 9/14/2009, 12:27 pm EST

“Won’t hold a candle to the Last Waltz”? Two completely different genres and concerts. Say what you want about Michael Jackson, that trailer was astounding. It’s like saying “yeah, Dylan and the Band classics are great but there’s no way they can dance and sing like MJ.”

Anonymous | 9/14/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I don’t think it looked like the greatest show ever staged…

Mostly a giant video wall (which has been done many times before)… with some lite Cirque-Du Soleil stage effects (which has been done many times before)… and lots of choreographed dancing (again, been done before).

The show looks like it would have been fantastic… but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Rolling Stone.

Blondie | 9/14/2009, 1:30 pm EST

To Deborahffrench: I honor you. Thank you for so perfectly stating what millions and millions of people all over this planet feel. The world has lost one of the finest human beings to ever share his love, vision, and humanity with us. His pain was everyone’s pain and we did indeed, abandon him. He, who gave unselfishly, unendingly, unconditionally, was ridiculed out of ignorance and prejudice, the very things he hated the most. Michael cannot be harmed now. I love you MORE, Michael.

Bobbie | 9/14/2009, 1:31 pm EST

I cried the minute I saw the trailer. I didn’t really know what to expect , but it is clearly one of the most amazing two and a half minutes of film that I have ever seen. My favorite part was when MJ said it’s all for love,L-O -V-E.I can’t wait to see it ,and the dvd is sure to have even more footage. I only hope MJ can look down from heaven and see how many people love him. It is only a shame that when he was alive , more people didn’t express that to him when he needed it most. All of those so called friends of his and doctors who manipulated his trust and friendship, I hope that they realize what a horrible thing they all collectively managed to do. MJ will always live in my heart, like he used to say to his fans, I love you more, no Michael, I LOVE YOU MORE !!!!

Biggest MJ Fan | 9/14/2009, 2:06 pm EST

I adore MJ the musical and dance genius, but MJ the person much much more. But in looking at the trailer, while the show looks AMAZING, I cannot in good conscience say that he looked well. I don’t know if it was the way his costumes were tailored or the stances the camera caught him for a couple of seconds, but he looked positively frail. His shoulders are very hunched over, his arms and legs look stick thin (look on youtube at 1:28, 1:44, 1:51, 2:04 to name a few). Now MJ was always a thin guy, but he was never, EVER gaunt.

I love him and had every confidence he could pull the comeback off, but after seeing the trailer…he just doesn’t look like himself.

Sophia | 9/14/2009, 2:14 pm EST

It is nothing but amazing! Michael, you are always amazing.

Anonymous | 9/14/2009, 2:50 pm EST

To Biggest MJ Fan,

This was not the Michael Jackson in his 20’s or 30s… This was a 50 year old Michael Jackson. Even if he didn’t die, you’d have to expect some deterioration at that age.

Mary J. | 9/14/2009, 3:01 pm EST

I thank Madonna for telling the truth on last night. Michael felt abandoned because he was abandoned. It is a shame that Michael had to depend on true love and real friendship from other countries. I hope he knew that not everyone in the U.S. condemned him. We loved you Michael, more than you will ever know. He looked great in the trailor and was ready for a grand comeback..the greatest show of the century was upon us, and the enemy was mad and used Michael’s weakness to take his life through the hands of a wicked man. I agree that someone should have taken over a long time ago and got him the help he so well deserved. Who expects a person with an addiction to make the right choices..that is what real friends and family are for…Lord help everybody that ignored Michael when he needed them the most. including the paid staff..love you MJJ..you will aways be in my heart and your music will remain in my house, my car, my computer…whereever…can’t even dream of listening to any other artists right now…its going to take me a long while…don’t hear anything thats even worth listening to anyway..Love You Always.

Kent | 9/14/2009, 3:18 pm EST

The trailer was awesome(and I haven’t been an MJ fan for years). I’m definetly buying my advance tickets(I’m sure two weeks won’t be enough to cover everyone that wants to see the Documentary).
I hope his children get most of the money that the movie will make.

Natalie | 9/14/2009, 3:42 pm EST

I’m completely blown away by the trailer. It’s not like Michael Jackson has to prove himself anymore that he is the greatest entertainer of all time, but the footages speak loud and clear for themselves. Not only that, being able to witness the behind-the-scenes of this creative genius at work is simply breath-taking. I’d to very much love to see all of the hundreds of hours of footages that cannot make it into the 2 plus hour movie. I truly appreciate Madonna for her boldness to take a stand against the witch-hunters, the ones who are ultimately responsible for Michael’s demise. The This Is It trailer, Madonna’s speech, the dance tribute, and Janet Jackson’s amazing performance made the VMA 2009’s Michael Jackson tribute the best one to date.

pauline | 9/14/2009, 6:02 pm EST

I am saddened every day, cannot hold back my tears. The footage was incredibly.Michael you are my king and you are always with me. My friends think I am crazy, but I will stay crazy loving you.I have loved you all my life and will continue to.Long live my king the best and greatest artist to have ever lived. Thanks Madonna and Janet.

Shelley | 9/14/2009, 7:19 pm EST

I agree with all the wonderful comments already made about MJ.
I only wanted to post that if you’re going to “quote” MJ in your article- maybe try watching the trailer a few more times so you get the wording accurate! For crying out loud…..

Sonya | 9/14/2009, 7:52 pm EST

I have to say RIGHT ON! The concert looks like it will be AMAZING. MJ was definitely the greatest artist of all time. I’m so sorry he left us before it could have taken place. MADONNA at the VMA’s was beautiful and moving. I have so much more respect for her now. And Janet – she did MJ proud. :) RIP MJ Legends NEVER DIE

Never can say goodbye | 9/14/2009, 8:21 pm EST

The trailer speaks louder than any naysaying and naysayer: Michael was still the electrifying performer he has always been. “Peerless”.
He would rock the world for many years to come but MICHAEL WAS MURDERED.

Michael Jackson, for me, personifies the highest and truest meaning of the word artist – where the personal human being and the ‘creative’ collide in a profound and real way. These artists leave their blood and guts on the stages they step on, they move you, touch you and change you somewhere deep inside. In a world now dominated by reality stars and PR teams, Michael was perhaps the last of the truly brave, towering world talents. He danced as if his life depended on it – and that voice. Hearing it was like hearing the purest of things, the innocent part of ourselves sung back to us. For me, when Michael died it has been a remembrance of that and it has been very painful – and yet, it shows the power of music and the power of our shared, cultural memory. We always loved him, we just didn’t know how much. The full magnitude of what Michael gave and would have kept on giving had he not been profoundly affected by the turbulence that erupted from 1993 onwards, is a matter of public record. I have been sickened to see that even after witnessing the palpable grief of Paris, Katherine, Maccauley, Janet, Brooke, Stevie, Elizabeth etc, the countless tributes, the outpouring of love from the entire globe; one would think some degree of sensitivity, some sense of reflection or atonement from the media would be forthcoming. No chance. There has been something akin to a blackout silence about the real issues that concern those of us who have watched the media and Tom Sneddon erode and degrade Michael Jackson’s spirit for over 15 years. Namely, why was Tom Sneddon’s personal vendetta against the then biggest pop star on the planet, reason enough to allow him to spend millions of taxpayer’s money persecuting a man with shockingly non-credible accusers at the heart of both allegations. Mickey | 9/15/2009, 10:06 pm EST

While I like MJ and his talent cannot be be over-stated. Michael still holds some responsibility for what caused his death. Wanting to be put under by general anethesia just to get some sleep is an insane request and yes even more insane for a physician to grant his request.

Steve | 9/15/2009, 10:44 pm EST

While I am a MJ fan I can’t believe that these people won’t let him rest. While trying to make money of his name makes me sick.

Optimist | 9/15/2009, 10:49 pm EST

Hopefully some real, credible journlists (Gerald Posner, p’haps) is working on a well-researched tome detailing the true story of his “crimes” as well as the dubious nature of so many of his advisors, friends and hangers-on. His legacy deserves full airing of all of this; his genius and genuinely charitable heart can weather the full disclosure of shortcomings that make him human–even though both his ups and down seem to push the “normal” envelope of experience.

It saddens me more to watch at the trailer. He worked so hard for the concerts that he wouldnt have the chance to perform it live for us. So many of ‘if’s.. if the concerts would have go on.. then it will be the greatest of all!! RIP, MJ. We love you!

to who cares | 9/16/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Michael Jackson was a hero and he lives forever in millions of hearts as just that. I wonder if people will say the same of you when you leave the planet……
just a thought.

Michael Jackson Was awesome he was my Idol. The man could move and sing at the same time. HE is terribly missed by ALL his fans, including me. :( God bless Michael Jackson. He lives forever.

Loving Michael | 9/16/2009, 6:39 pm EST

To WhoCares-Before you criticize a person, how about you take a spelling class or two first! It’s pedophile (not petiphile)you ignoramus!!
Regardless of charges brought Michael was never found guilty of any crime. In all of your life I’m sure someone has lied or accused you of something that you were not guilty of…It happens to all of us, but especially to stars with a heart and soul as big as Michael’s. All he ever wanted was for us as human beings to love and respect one another for our similarities as well as appreciate our differences. NEWSFLASH– there’s nothing wrong with that!
Michael was a musical genius beyond measure. And it must have been a horrible feeling to have your so-called friends and basically the whole world turn their backs on you at a time when those who really cared about you should have been there to embrace you. My heart aches to think about the abandonment he must have felt. But through it all he still remained the strong, loving, positive, understanding person that he always was. How many of us can boast of that?
So for those of you who choose to condemn him to hell (like you’re without sin) I hope you will one day find it in your heart to forgive, because you can’t get into heaven without it (forgiveness). So with that being said R.I.P. Michael and I hope you’re giving one fantastic concert while in Heaven. As for your naysayers they are more than welcome to have that seat in hell they were trying to reserve for you.

Bogdana | 9/17/2009, 10:28 am EST

Michael Jackson is and will always be the one and only King of Music and Light. I still can’t accept what happened, and this is why I will never talk about Michael at past tense. I strongly believe none of us, fans, should. I would have given my life for him to be alive and happy. My only confort under the circumstances is my strong belief that if God, heaven and hell really exist, then Michael is for sure singing and dancing with the other angels right now, sitting in heaven’s front row, smiling down on us. I try to tell myself that he is finally away from a world which failed him so much… no more pain, loneliness and pressure.

For the idiots which left bad comments – I am not a hateful person, but I hope you will rot in hell!

Michael, I am keeping you alive in my everyday life and I always will. You are my mentor, my idol, my friend, my confident, my better half. I am trying to move on and to honor you daily, in my own way, even if is so damn hard.
God Bless you, Angel!
Michael Jackson 1958 – Forever

P.S. I love you more!

To Deborahffrench, thanking you for saying what we all feel. He is simply the greatest artist of all time and the finest humanitarin. no one comes close and will ever come close. He is MAGIC and I am truly honored to have lived in his time. I love you Michael from the bottom of my hearts.

Roxy | 9/17/2009, 3:09 pm EST

I am so happy that the fans will have this last chance to be with Michael through this film. However, I must say the truth, and that MJ looks painfully thin. While I’m sure he is giving us his all? I don’t think he would have made it for the numerous shows. MJ was always thin, but this is almost to much to bear to watch. So sad what has happened to him over the years.

shalonda | 9/18/2009, 4:19 pm EST

I agree with all the fans that has written such great comments about MJ. He will live on for ever and the person that said that resolution 600 is not dead he is so right. MJ was framed and the world need to know that and as a part of the human race we all that loved and admired MJ need to get this for him so no one will ever for get what he gave to this world. His love, heart, and soul for humanity

There is no day pass by without thinking about him. I am not too sure what I have to do to accept his passing. He is a true legend and a phenomenal human being. Let the “Truth Reign Supreme” I love you Michael Joseph Jackson. 1958-Forever.

Boteach and Michael had not been in correspondence for the last six years of Michael’s life, because Boteach did not stand by Michael when he faced charges in 2003. We do not even know if Michael intended to do a book. For all we know, this could be a carrot stick to convince the fans to buy this shabbily conceived page-turner. Michael – so often duped in life, could have merely been going along with Boteach’s own request that they tape their ‘therapy sessions’ – as many therapists do now. They clearly sound like therapy sessions, with Boteach introducing ‘leading’ questions into the stream of the conversation and offering advice back. As a leading Rabbi posted on The Huffington Post recently, Schulmey has overstepped the line and remit of a Rabbi in breaching the confidence and trust placed in him. Despite Schulmey’s overkill protestations that Michael wanted this published to ‘ bring the family together,’ I am certain most people with a modicum of intelligence will recognize this book for what it is – a shameless, money -making act of exploitative betrayal and staggering cheapness with a clever hustler at its heart.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY BOTEACH’S DISGUSTING LITTLE BOOK – HE WAS NOT FRIEND FO MICHAEL’S AND IS ONLY SAYING THAT HE AND MICHARL PLANNED TO DO THE BOOK SO THE FANS WILL BUY IT. WE ARE A POWERFUL FAN COMMUNITY – LETS ALSO BE A WISE ONE.
