Madonna surprised MTV’s VMAs tonight by opening the show with a long speech about Michael Jackson that was followed by a performance by Janet Jackson. The show closed with a spectacular look at This Is It, the film assembled from Jackson’s concert rehearsals. Read Madonna’s entire tribute here:

Michael Jackson. [Cheers] I have a little bit more to say than that. OK, here we go again. Michael Jackson was born in August 1958. So was I. Michael Jackson grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. So did I. Michael Jackson had eight brothers and sisters. So do I. When Michael Jackson was six, he became a superstar, and was perhaps the world’s most beloved child. When I was six, my mother died. I think he got the shorter end of the stick. I never had a mother, but he never had a childhood. And when you never get to have something, you become obsessed by it.

I spent my childhood searching for my mother figures. Sometimes I was successful, but how do you recreate your childhood when you are under the magnifying glass of the world?

There is no question that Michael Jackson is one of the greatest talents the world has ever known. That when he sang a song at the ripe old age of eight he could make you feel like an experienced adult was squeezing your heart with his words. That when he moved he had the elegance of Fred Astaire and packed the punch of Muhammad Ali. That his music had an extra layer of inexplicable magic that didn’t just make you want to dance but actually made you believe you could fly, dare to dream, be anything that you wanted to be. Because that is what heroes do and Michael Jackson was a hero.

He performed in soccer stadiums around the world, and sold hundreds of millions of records and dined with prime ministers and presidents. Girls fell in love with him, boys fell in love with him, everyone wanted to dance like him. He seemed otherworldly — but he was a human being.

Like most performers he was shy and plagued with insecurities. I can’t say we were great friends, but in 1991 I decided I wanted to try to get to know him better. I asked him out to dinner, I said “My treat, I’ll drive — just you and me.”

He agreed and showed up to my house without any bodyguards. We drove to the restaurant in my car. It was dark out, but he was still wearing sunglasses.

I said, “Michael, I feel like I’m talking to a limousine. Do you think you can take off your glasses so I can see your eyes?”

Then he tossed the glasses out the window, looked at me with a wink and a smile and said, “Can you see me now? Is that better?”

in that moment, I could see both his vulnerability and his charm. The rest of the dinner, I was hellbent on getting him to eat French fries, drink wine, have dessert and say bad words. Things he never seemed to allow himself to do. Later we went back to my house to watch a movie and sat on the couch like two kids, and somewhere in the middle of the movie, his hand snuck over and held mine.

It felt like he was looking for more of a friend than a romance, and I was happy to oblige. In that moment, he didn’t feel like a superstar. He felt like a human being.

We went out a few more times together, and then for one reason or another we fell out of touch. Then the witch hunt began, and it seemed like one negative story after another was coming out about Michael. I felt his pain, I know what it’s like to walk down the street and feel like the whole world is turned against you. I know what it’s like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud you feel like your voice can never be heard.

But I had a childhood, and I was allowed to make mistakes and find my own way in the world without the glare of the spotlight.

When I first heard that Michael had died, I was in London, days away from the start of my tour. Michael was going to perform in the same venue as me a week later. All I could think about in this moment was, “I had abandoned him.” That we had abandoned him. That we had allowed this magnificent creature who had once set the world on fire to somehow slip through the cracks. While he was trying to build a family and rebuild his career, we were all passing judgement. Most of us had turned our backs on him. In a desperate attempt to hold onto his memory, I went on the internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and on stage and I thought, “my God, he was so unique, so original, so rare, and there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king.”

But he was also a human being, and alas we are all human beings and sometimes we have to lose things before we can appreciate them. I want to end this on a positive note and say that my sons, age nine and four, are obsessed with Michael Jackson. There’s a whole lot of crotch grabbing and moon walking going on in my house. And, it seems like a whole new generation of kids have discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again. I hope that wherever Michael is right now he is smiling about this.

Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being but he was a king. Long live the king.

I am not surprised by kanye wests actions, what surprises me is the attention he gets in the music world. The most overrated artist out there, I guess he needs the attention somehow.

So heartfelt, deep, and the honest truth the side i’ve never got to see of madonna and a side of MJ people lack to acknowledge “he was not just a performer he was human” sad to see we appreciated him more in death then when he was alive that pains me as i watch the media who ripped him apart now glorifying him smh RIP MJ

Kat | 9/14/2009, 2:55 am EST

She looks so gorgeous. I’ve always thought she has some of the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. Great speech from the queen to the king.

Long live the KING!

Wonderful words from Madonna.

Alas, with the passing of MJ the era of the superstar is now over. All we are left with are gangstas and meaningless songs.

Annika | 9/14/2009, 5:42 am EST

Thank you, Madonna. I cried just reading this speech. I’m certain thousands of people have done the same thing she did – going to youtube after his death and suddenly discovered what we have lost. I’m disgusted by myself not really realizing it before, although I was in awe of his music and short films.

Angel | 9/14/2009, 6:29 am EST

This is a very heartfelt and touching tribute. Its true that sometimes we don’t know the value and take things for granted. Bless MJ always!

open your eyes | 9/14/2009, 6:59 am EST

she was getting on the stage, smiling, enjoying, as allways, to have all the attention, she paused at the beggining of the speech to be more cheered, she talk more about herself than she did about michael, even the things she said about michael aimed to her.
she said some nice words, some cliches and portrait her as the queen. She is Queen Pretender

Avex | 9/14/2009, 6:59 am EST

So nice of Madonna, very emotional and appreciated

I thought that was great. She didn’t just speak in banal platitudes, she gave hive a proper eulogy based on how she knew him in her own life. Good for Madonna. Sending up Michael J. the right way.

Stars031 | 9/14/2009, 11:25 am EST

Thank you Madonna. I get that he was human. The fame, money, and a genius at his craft are are extras that he was born with. I identify with Michael on many levels, mostly personally. I understood the human being and thats what attracted me to him, not so much the music and talent. I could relate to what you said, “when you never get to have something, you become obsessed by it. I felt his pain, I know what it’s like to walk down the street and feel like the whole world is turned against you. I know what it’s like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud you feel like your voice can never be heard.” I’ve experienced this in my life as well and felt connected to him because of it.

God Bless Madonna, i agree a queen in her own right..praising and remembering a king..Michael Jackson. God bless you both. and thanks Madonna..

Austin | 9/14/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Wow once again Madonna has shown us she is not just a great performer, but she is also a great opinion leader. Her words couldn´t be better: She was clear when she said they weren´t close friends; nevertheless, She recognizes MJ as the bigest star of entertainment… that’s a big statement coming from, probably the only close competitor MJ could ever had.

Madonna is strong and wise, Madonna, knows we only have 1 living legend left: She.

Long live the great great woman that has changed the rol of women forever.

Madonna you are a really Queen

G | 9/14/2009, 1:17 pm EST

the queen spent half of her tribute speech talking about herself…

the reason people blackballed him was because they believed him to be a pedophile. just because he died does not take that away

Gessle | 9/14/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Madonna is the definetly the Queen of Pop and she is the only elite singer left..

mcp | 9/14/2009, 2:24 pm EST

The most narcissistic speech ever made by anyone ever…no one can pat herself on the back better than Madonna..you go girl!

chryss o'raidy | 9/14/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Madonna related to Michael on many levels but appreciated the difference in their lives that preserved her and brought him so much difficulty. She related to him, and that helped her understand him and love him more. THIS IS NOT NARCISSISM. When you are in pain and being persecuted, nothing is more important to your sanity than empathy. THAT’S what Madonna expressed. She expressed the DIFFERENCE between their lives as a way of offering perspective to his. She has grown so much since her young and cocky years and can teach you as much about humility as she can about self-love and confidence. Her ruthless narcissism is part of her PAST. Get over it. Thank you Madonna for honoring the memory of Michael as the human, rather than the freak.

Lara | 9/14/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Ugh, self-absorbed.

Kanye ur such a jew bag! | 9/14/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Im sorry but i think that was a slap in the face!! So he thought beyonce shudve won get the fuck over it just cuz she shook her ass durin her whole video doesn make it better at least taylor swifts video had a point and storyline but anyway point is that was a bitch move and very disrespectful and he is now and forever a big headed arrogant punk ass bitch made prick in my eyes!! Fuck that dude! fuckin peice of shit

Natalie | 9/14/2009, 4:19 pm EST

What a heart-felt and beautiful speech by Madonna regarding Michael Jackson. It is so appropriate and respectful, just love it. Some people seem to feel that Madonna is talking too much about herself, but it is not really the case. It is an art when giving a speech for the speaker to first establish his/her connection with the subject being spoken about. Madonna certainly knows the art and employed it beautifully. Long live the King!

Mike Strattan | 9/14/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Mr. West, you’ll never have the class that Ms. Taylor showed while you were so rude to her. It’s about time you learn your manners. I wish you good health, but I hope your career sinks fast. As for Ms. Taylor, I wish you the best health and success! You are a class act!

Curious | 9/14/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Kanye…If that was JEnnifer Hudson up there getting an award….would you have jumped up and shown your ass then?

Jean | 9/14/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Kanye who! Never listened to him before and won’t in the future. Good publicity ploy to someone who is clearly grasping at the last threads of his career. See you in the soup line, Kanye!

JJWEST | 9/14/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Looks Like Kanye’s career is slowing down. No doubt he will be doing car shows with Kris Kross and Burt Ward in the not to distant future.

MediocreDancersWhoCantSing | 9/14/2009, 6:09 pm EST

If Madonna’s a “queen” of POP, America’s in worse condition than I imagined. SHouldn’t a queen of POP be able to SING at least?

Christina | 9/14/2009, 6:53 pm EST

She talks about herself! It all about her! No wonder she is a bad actress. she has no understanding of other people! If you replace ‘Michael’ by ‘Madonna’, nothing would change. it is still the same speech, about being human, but also being a king. Its ALL about herself.

alex | 9/14/2009, 7:31 pm EST

Who cares if Madonna can sing. Isn’t the fact that she has been around for going on 30 years more than enough to say she has earned some respect? And since when is “pop” music about vocal ability? Never really has been, and never really will be.

Apathetic | 9/14/2009, 8:29 pm EST

I guess I’ve just had it with entertainers patting each other on the back, alive or not alive.

I realize that they command the almighty dollar, but when I see these tributes where someone like MJ, granted, a truly unique entertainer, is elevated to “magnificent creature?”

Sorry, I prefer an old copy of “Cosmos” with Carl Sagan. Now he had something to say worth getting worked up about. Cause he was “bad, he’s bad, we knew it!”

Brian Gallagher | 9/14/2009, 8:58 pm EST

One of the reasons pop music sucks. This self absorbed non talent turns everything to herself agrandizing. I can`t stand her crappy music. She has snookered alot of people over the years. Don`t even get me goin about Lady CaCa.

observer | 9/14/2009, 10:14 pm EST

As I read all the comments of madonna’s speech except those who do not appreciate(we’ll good luck to those who gave bad comments to MJ..I wish that karma won’t hit your life).I would like to give cedits in madonna’s speech but,it is not about her wonderful speech to MJ but,Its about a grief of a human being, thinking of good memories and hold on to it and giving respect and sharing the same sorrow to the world to the person that the world loved.madonna is speaking on behalf of the fans that is still waiting for someone to break free the feelings that has been numb after the shocking and tragic death of one of the beloved great singer of all time. The people should pay attention to the pain that she felt loosing a dearly beloved human being as opposed to how she said it!

John | 9/14/2009, 10:43 pm EST

Madonna’s speech was amazing and beautiful and she made me feel for Michael and understand better than anyone has so far! Cheers!

Jerry | 9/14/2009, 11:07 pm EST

That was an outstanding expression of love , respect , and a true understanding of The Man , The Legend , The King . His music will live forever and this gift that God gave this world will never die . Long live the King ! Thank you Madonna .

mokko | 9/14/2009, 11:30 pm EST

Madonna is a true talent not only is she the queen of Kabbalah and of POP (no contradiction there), but I was not aware she was such a great contortionist. She stood up on stage, dislocated both her arms and commenced to pat herself on the back for 4.6 minutes in the name of MJ.

paige nicole | 9/15/2009, 10:58 am EST

Stacy | 9/15/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Sorry , but the speech was mostly about her and her kids, did you see how how many time the word “I” is in there more than Micheal’s name

Stacy | 9/15/2009, 2:25 pm EST

It was a great speech but too much about Madonna, If you review the speech there is more of the word “I” than “Michael”, remember she said she was not close of a friend, she is a narcissistic person, and I believe she was a bit green-eyed over the attention he received over the last few months and the speech showed it… BUT KANYE, totally over shadowed her as the biggest narcissist and A**… what an idiot, my goodness to punk off a little girl’s wonderful moment is just pitiful… He totally needs to grow up, many things in the world do not go the way we’ve planned we deal with it… not throw a tantrum like a two-year-old….

chris | 9/15/2009, 2:51 pm EST

great speech dedicated to Michael Jackson.
Janet is my hero!!!!!!!!!!
great VMA in New York!!!!!!!!!!!!

Louise | 9/15/2009, 4:50 pm EST

I liked this speech and I didn’t take it as anything other than a heart-felt personalised ode to Michael.

As for Kanye West, unforgivable. That poor girl. Imagine winning something you always dreamed about and a moment that should have been someting you cherished and looked back on for the rest of your life with pride; just to be interrupted by someone who thought they had the right to steal that moment from you and ruin it forever. Absolute arsehole, and as for his ‘apology’ – if he was that sorry and considerate he wouldn’t have ever dreamed of doing it in the first place. Arrogant bastard!

Jocelyn | 9/15/2009, 6:50 pm EST

Confused | 9/15/2009, 9:30 pm EST

Hmmm apparently Kanye along with being rude does not know what constitutes a good video.. I am a fan of Beyonce but calling her video the best in the decade is pretty scary. The video consisted of dancing, thats it…Last time I checked a good video tells a story. Taylor’s video did that and didn’t consist of her shaking her ass the whole time. Hmm maybe I am wrong but I call it like I see it

Sherry | 9/16/2009, 1:44 am EST

I dont get how anyone can say Madonna talked a lot about herself. The only things she said about herself were comparisons to him and then about their “date.” Brooke Shields did the same thing at MJ’s memorial and nobody bashed her for it. Madonna’s speech was beautiful!

Deborahffrench | 9/16/2009, 7:16 am EST

The tragedy of this night at the Vma’s is that it seems Kanye West’s unacceptable, alcohol-fuelled behaviour is going to overshadow what was supposed to be a tribute to Michael Jackson from the highest and best in the music industry. I am so angry this has happened. Michael deserved better. Janet must have had to dig so deep to find the strength to go out and perform and Madonna’ words were eloquent and spoke the truth. All that’s being reported is Kanye’s rudeness not the real story – that we have lost something so beautiful, so transcendent and so missed. Please don’t give Kanye this power, don’t let him make us forget. This was suppoed to a night for Michael – a long overdue one.

New Madonna Fan | 9/16/2009, 8:19 am EST

i like her speech. she’s not telling mostly about herself but about their time. and how she knows michael as a person and how her kids adore mj. she admits that somehow she abandoned him. but she’s a friend who treasures mj. her speech truly reflects what she felt as a person not as a queen of pop. she doesn’t need attention. for a long years being a performer she also have a share of attention. im not a fan of madonna (though i recognize her music) but i can’t see something wrong with her speech. actually, it’s good to hear for someone like her who no longer have a communication with mj.

IMAGINE | 9/16/2009, 6:20 pm EST

16 September 2009
Madonna’s honorary tribute to Michael Jackson spoke from her heart with sincere truth, beauty, and love, and I am grateful . . . the greatest Queen pays highest tribute to the greatness of the King. Madonna’s appropriate tribute acknowledges and appreciates the unique magnificance, unearthy enlightened and gifted human being Michael Jackson was, and how he was received and perceived living in the public eye.
Madonna reminds us how privileged we are to have been in Michael’s presence throughout his life time. Michael Jackson shared his life with us with his inspiring creative gifts of music and dance by simply allowing himself to receive the connection of the universe and step into the flow of the never ending dance of life. I am grateful Michael Jackson was alive during my lifetime, and appreciate the goodness, enlightenment, truth, beauty and love he gave throughout the world by living his life with us. Michael Jackson will live forever in his music, dance and his children, and continues to live in our hearts forever . . .
I am grateful Madonna continues to grace us with her presence, and I acknowledge and appreciate Madonna’s unique life with gifts of music, art, and dance throughout the world, continues to manifest and contribute goodness and enlightenment throughout the world.
I am grateful Madonna gave such a thoughtful, respectful and high tribute to Michael Jackson. In Madonna’s tribue to Michael Jackson, I see now how clearly both Madonna and Michael are our teachers in the dance and celebration of life here on earth; enlightened beings.
I believe that the qualities Madonna recognizes and identifies with in Michael Jackson are a reflection or mirror of those same qualities existing in Madonna. May we acknowledge and appreciate Madonna’s unique gifts and life with us during her life time with us here on earth; right here right now.
~Namaste

Roger M | 9/16/2009, 8:13 pm EST

It is a pity we do not appreciate Madonna as we should. We Americans should be proud to have a magnificent singer as Madonna! Think! Madonna is one of the best female AMERICAN singers in the world. We should embrace America for its talent. It is sad to see that Americans think so badly of a an American singer like Madonna. We are probably the only country who would insult thier own kind (nationaly). I love Madonna for being unique and for changing American culture even though most people do not appreciate that. But at the end, when she dies everybody is going to be talking about how great she was but in reality when she was alive, we dispised her. How low have we gone??? R.I.P Michael Jackson!

dislike rudeness | 9/17/2009, 12:03 pm EST

Sue, you are so dumb, Pink was clapping for Taylor and they had to hold her back from trying to get to Kanye after that to let him know she didn’t like what he did. Taylor’s supporters were all standing up clapping for HER!

deen | 9/18/2009, 12:48 am EST

i find it so funny that the only people who liked kanye wests little stunt are chavs who can’t spell. please go back to school, learn something, then open that trap you call a mouth. as for madonna, you go girl! SUE – you’re a dumbass! (bet you’re knocked up with 4 kids under the age of 5 and living on the dole – and buys big hoop jewellery from argos) – save your money and buy condoms so we don’t have to put up with any more of your offspring. see? i can speak my mind too, so you should respect me and love me for it!

Madonna should have just said she feels eclipsed by all the attention MJ has been getting and wishes to remind every one that they had a lot in common. That is if any one understands what the female of a king is. Congrats Queen Madonna but Janet empathises not you.

firstly @ Paige Nicole – If you HATE Michael Jackson that much then why read all the stories about him – Why read the damn speech – Go play in the traffic or something please. Its people like you that make this world so sick. You & Kanye should hook up & do coffee, clearly you are both on the same level!!!
I enjoy Madonna’s music – but was never a FAN – but after watching MTV VMA’s & reading the speech, I have such respect for this woman. She spoke of Michael in such High regard. Madonna my hat is off to you – you are truly the Queen of Pop & nobody else could have made a better tribute to the King …Long live the King …

this speech was an indirect insult not only to michael jackson but to alot of people-”he tossed his glasses out the window” – “his hand snuck over and held mine” NONSENSE! i would like to thank the FREE MASONS, ILLUMINATI & THE U.S GOVERNMENT for polluting the world with this crap sexual mind control materialism bullshit. I hope they enjoyed the show. Not all of us are buying into these artists being made into some kind of gods and setting trends and misleading the masses. DISGUSTING! SCUM OF THE EARTH!

She is no queen

She gave such a great speech about Michael!I like Maddona`s songs, but not so much…But since I heard her talk about Michael, she increased in my eyes. She said what we all wanted to say.And she was heard. She made a great tribute, and I congratulate her for that! Seems like 1958 has been a great year! Love you Michael!

She used Michael when he was alive to promote and market herself, so it’s no real surprise that she would continue to do so after his death. It would be nice to think she meant what she was saying, but what she was saying was more to bring attention to herself and her own career.

She stressed the point and said,
“I know what it’s like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself
because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud that you ARE CONVINCED your voice can never be heard”.
But the writer changed it into “you FEEL LIKE your voice can never be heard”.
The writer never feels the pain, but intentionally drowns out her voice, for he or she has such good ears to describe even [cheers] at the beginning.
Madonna reminded me of that I had abandoned Michael, too, so I don’t want to do the same to her.
Please tell her words scrupulously because she wrote it from her heart, and kept slashing and burning and editing, and said what she had to say at the end of the day.
Long live the King and the Queen!
