Janet Jackson Honors Michael With Dance Tribute at VMAs

With the Jackson family looking on from the audience, Janet Jackson kicked off the 2009 Video Music Awards with a tribute to her brother, Michael. Before Janet took the stage however, Madonna emerged on the darkened stage to reminisce about her experience knowing Michael, drawing comparisons between their difficult childhoods and the King of Pop’s everlasting impact on music.

“There is no question Michael Jackson was one of the greatest talents the world has ever known,” Madonna said to a standing ovation. “We allowed this magnificent creature that once set the world on fire to slip through the cracks… He was so unique, so original, so rare and there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king.”

Check out the 2009 VMAs’ most memorable moments.

After Madonna concluded her tribute, the MJ performance began with a pack of dancers streaming onto the stage to reenact the famed “Thriller” dance while the song’s classic video projected on the giant screen. According to reports, dancers, choreographers and Janet herself were involved in hours of intense rehearsals in preparation for the tribute to an artist who helped put MTV on the map. “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal” next featured in the dancers’ compilation of Michael’s most memorable moves, with the performers all donning some of Jackson’s trademark outfits.

Then, as the opening notes of Jackson’s collaboration with his sister “Scream” played over the speakers, Janet Jackson smashed through the set to recreate her duet with her brother. The performance was meticulously coordinated, with the siblings dancing in unison; Janet on the stage, Michael on the screen. Cris Judd, a.k.a. Jennifer Lopez’s ex-husband, and Tina Landon, Janet’s longtime choreographer, were among the dancers who joined Janet for the performance that was a moving moment and a fitting way to start the evening.

Anonymous | 9/14/2009, 12:24 am EST

To my two queens of pop madonna and janet jackson thank you. These three paved a way for beyonce, lady gaga, pink and crazy kanye. Beyonce I have the upmost respect for you. The sprit of michael. The moral of the story is charactor and loving one another. Madge said it best there wont be another mike. But he pass the torch to janet, madge, prince, beyonce, hov a,taylor, kanye and us. Michael from my heart thank you. In galations 5 and 1 corn 13 talks about you can have all the possesions, gifts and minstries the most important is love. Plz don’t take your existance here on earth and people for granted. Cuz god called you home. Its a wrap. My question is what is your legacy cuz my mans mj and am did.

Eve | 9/14/2009, 12:29 am EST

The MJ tribute was awesome, but seeing Janet dancing with Michael brought me to tears,it was amazing. I hope he’s looking down and seeing how much he was loved.

Martone | 9/14/2009, 1:11 am EST

What some people don’t realize that the song “Scream” requires attitude and her voice was exactly as it was when the song was originally performed it.

trox | 9/14/2009, 1:18 am EST

I just couldn’t stop crying! Janet is the female Michael for sure. The greatest female performer overall in our time. She lights the stage as no one else except her brother. I’m looking forward to her next album! Love you Madonna as well. Michael RIP. Janet, don’t stop please! Nothing but love!

annmarie | 9/14/2009, 1:26 am EST

janet and amazing!! like her late brother incredible incredible incredible! very moving and strong… stay strong to Janet and the entire Jackson family….

now THAT is how you do a tribute

Anonymous | 9/14/2009, 1:29 am EST

i loved both their parts and madonna acknowledged what most of the new kids wont, that they’re an interpretation of mike . and that her kids are also fan. a true diva and so was Beyonce… what ‘you’ have will always be yours. no mater what the next person thinks or blogs. so don’t send hatred to people over what someone else has.. what u have is ‘yours’.. and what they have is ‘theirs’..
peace..
work on ‘you’ not people you dont know :)

I was in tears during Madonna’s speech and mesmorized by Janets tribute! Great Job! I say we all boycott Kanyes music for awhile! What an immature showing on his part…..couldnt take something so special being about someone else other than him! My kids have tossed his CD’s and wont be buying anymore!
RIP Michael and we will meet you in heaven when our time comes! BE happy and stay strong until we get there! Much love to your family!

John | 9/14/2009, 1:45 am EST

Madonna’s speech was okay. I guess just something about her there is annoying because she always has attention on her and like she said she wasn’t a great friend of his. They didnt need her there at all. I felt like that was Janet’s moment to her brother and as usual Madonna is in some vicinity of Janet overshadowing her in some way. Janet’s performance was unreal!

mj and jj fan | 9/14/2009, 1:51 am EST

Love it,love it! You did that girl!I’m so happy you performed and showed them how a performance should look like.janet don’t ever stop doing your thing cuz you do a damn good job.you made tears come to my eyes and I feel like he was right next to you doing that unforgetable performance.god bless you and your family. RIP michael jackson I love and miss you. Janet I wait to see what you do next because I know your album will be the best and you will perform like no one else can.there will never be a janet or michael or a jackson for that matter, keep doing your thing girl!!! You are untouchable.

gigi | 9/14/2009, 1:57 am EST

Kanye once again single handedly managed to make an award show all about himself. He should be banned from these events. I praise u jj. Love, love, love janet jackson. Thank u j for that wonderful tribute. Still can’t believe u r gone. I will always love u mj.

VERY BEAUTIFUL!
I WAS COMPLETELY IN TEARS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EVENT BECAUSE OF THAT REMARKABLE TRIBUTE. I HAVE FOLLOWED MJ FOR 24 YEARS AND I WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF HIM- ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
I LOVE YOU, MIKE.

mary | 9/14/2009, 2:02 am EST

Loved the Michael Jackson tribute and so too the speech that Madonna made – I was crying big, big tears watching Michael and knowing we have lost him forever. I really believed G-d touched this special child and blessed him with an immense gift which Michael absolutely delivered despite the pain and heartache it had cost him. Michael Jackson was a gift.

Michael, may your soul rest in Peace now and I will pray for your children that they will know no more pain. Thank you for your music…thank you.

BA for MJ | 9/14/2009, 2:37 am EST

With all due respect, Mr. Kreps you forgot to add to this article the most important elements of Madonna’s speech which were:

1. Michael was “a human being”
2. That, I paraphrase, Michael didn’t have the opportunity to have a childhood where he could safely make his mistakes.
3. That Michael, I paraphrase, did not have the opportunity to make his mistakes, not only as a child during a childhood, of which never had, but also without being under the speculation of the media’s eye.
3. That the media conducted a “witch hunt” on Michael.
4. That “the lynch mob “had “drowned” out his voice over the years.
5. That “we turned our backs” on Michael
6. That “we abandoned” Michael
7. That “we all are human” and, I paraphrase, that in order for us to realize the value of something, (in this case someone), [my parentheses], we have to loose it.

How sad it is that we recognize this now. How sad it is that we regret for ever judging a man who we should not have judged.
How sad it is that the media, not necessarily this venue but others, still continue to defile Michael Jackson’s name and reputation, or speak with, comment on, or gravitates to the scum bags that have something nasty, evil, and defamatory to say about Michael, his life, and his behavior.

Maybe if we stopped to love Michael Jackson instead of judging Michael Jackson, just maybe today we would still have Michael Jackson alive and well. But we don’t have Michael Jackson and there is no one to blame but ourselves. Funny I blame us, why because of what Madonna has said. It was a lynch mob that has been after Michael Jackson for years and yes he was hunted down like a witch. Why, because we the masses bought into the lies that were fed to us through the media and our unmistakable insatiable way of never believing what anyone has to say when they are asked.

I don’t want to rehash an old topic, but when are we ever going to learn? Look at the toll this kind of behavior has on a person. Michael Jackson was a man who gave his all to his work. He was a man who, out of his compassion and the ability to empathize, gave his money and time to the unfortunate, the underprivileged, the sick, and the disadvantaged. He was a man that worried about the plant. And he was a man who was a genius who only wanted to make a difference in this world through his talent/his art. And the difference that he strove for was a difference for the better.

Yet, people remarked about his face. They remarked about his weight. They remarked about his nose. They remarked about his hair. And they remarked about the color of his skin.

They questioned his sexual orientation and his intimate life, with his wives and girlfriends, were up for public discussion. And in the same vein, so was his ability to father children.

He was never really given a fair chance when he was accused of horrendous behavior. Instead he was thought of as a liar before he even was ever given the opportunity to tell his side of the story.

I don’t know, I think it is time that we try to walk a mile in Michael Jackson ’s shoes.

Just imagine if someone had said you had done something that you absolutely never did but everyone refused to believe you. How would you feel?

What if the accusation against you were ones that meant you would have to have acted in one of the most horrendous ways? How would that make you feel?

What if that action, which is so horrendous compiled with the fact that no one believes you, makes you look like a monster? How would you feel?

Now reflect. Here you are innocent and no one believes you. You keep trying to tell everyone over, and over, and over that you are innocent. Still, no one believes you. You want to say “whatever” but you can’t because what you are being accused of is so monstrous that you can’t possible bare the idea of anyone think of you as anything other than innocent. So, you keep trying to tell everyone that you are innocent but soon the crowd turns on you and they keep getting louder and louder with the cries of cruel and evil labels and names.

Now what? No one believes a single word you say no one is giving you the chance. There is no use anymore the people have decided.

Yet these same people a piece of you all the time.

You can’t go anywhere without being mobbed, pulled at, grabbed at, or screamed at by these same people who don’t believe a single word you say. Your life is an open book for everyone to read, comment on, judge, ridicule, and scrutinize, at this is all at someone else’s leisure and not your own.

OK, no one believes in what you say and if people say they do believe you, you are still looked at out of the corner of their eyes. You can’t go anywhere, you can’t do anything, and no one believes a word you say. So now what? You decide to stay home more.

But now, you are being scrutinized, questioned, commented on, ridiculed, and judged because you don’t come out of your home and instead brought the world to you behind the gates you built, so to keep everyone who is scrutinizing you, judging you, commenting on you, and ridiculing you out.

So now you can’t live go out without being judged and talked about and you can’t stay home without being judged and talked about.
What do you do?

Meanwhile, throughout this whole craziness all you wanted was to be loved, share your talent with the world, give back, spread love, and help others. Instead you have gone from being absolutely loved to being questioned, trapped and scrutinized.

Wow! That seems like some life. I am not saying that Michael Jackson was not privileged. He was privileged in many ways but Michael’s freedom has been taken away from him, he had to live with a stigma that never really truly went away, and his God-given right to make a choice or have a preference was always questioned.

As to the last statement, what gave us the right to question his choices?

I have to ask, “What concern is it of what Michael Jackson did or did not do with his wives, girlfriend, or anyone else? And what is it of our concern of how he had his children? IT IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS! And, no matter what we like to say about it, whatever Michael’s choice were, in any and everything he did, it had nothing to do with us. Michael’s choice was his prerogative and Michael’s choice was his right.

Please forgive me, but maybe the tables should be turned and maybe someone should ask all the people that want to know the answers regarding Michael’s love life and his role as the father of his children, by asking the following questions:

“What did you do with whoever you are
with?” “What sexual orientation are you, and why?” and “How did you get your children?”

Now, if any of you would be offended by someone asking you these questions, think about how that made Michael feel.

Just remember what Madonna said, Michael was “human’. He too was subject to all the aliments, conditions, emotions, thoughts, desires, fears, insecurities, curiosities, confusions, joys, burdens, weaknesses, strengths, and other “human” circumstances that all of us are subject to. But, let us not forget that it was us that refused to assist, love, care for, comfort, support, and believe in our fellow being, Michael Jackson, and now it is too late.

Sylvia M. | 9/14/2009, 2:48 am EST

Please can we all stop talking about Kanye West’s ridiculous antics. The 2009 VMA’s should about Michael Jackson and honouring him and the fantastic tribute paid to this great artist by Janet Jackson and Madonna. Both of them worked so hard to do right by him, but in matter of seconds Kanye swung the attention to himself. Hopefully once this crapola has died down, we can put the focus back where it belongs – deserved worldwide honours for Michael Jackson, as a global musical legend and humanitarian.

GREAT SHOW | 9/15/2009, 8:20 pm EST

it was a very entertaining show this year, my 2 QUEENS – JANET & BEYONCE killed it, they were my highlight & overall, the show was really good….GO MTV, now get rid of the HILLS/ROADRULES & PLAY MORE VIDEOS !!!

Janet and Madonna were amazing. I cannot even begin to imagine what life would be like for an icon. Bad/false publicity has destroyed/killed so many human beings. It’s got to stop

Waltina | 9/18/2009, 7:35 pm EST

Janet is an amazing talent just like Michael. Michael was a one of a life time artist who we will never see again. The pity of Michael this great singer/dancer is how people’s turned their backs on him. Michael gave his heart and soul in all of his performances for his fans. His fans loved him and he loved them back. We who loved this man should never let his music die. Michael has so many great songs that they should alway be played. Let’s never forget this man an what he gave to us. His voice, dance, heart
and soul, compassion for others, and his gift of giving to others(which never made the news). God gave him such a gift. TALENT. And did he put it all out there for the world to see and marvel at. The greatest ever.
Janet what a great job you did in honoring your brother. May we as fans and people who appreciate great music always continue to enjoy his songs with a smile on our face.

Hello Janet. I am proud of the way you performed at the VMA’s and so sorry your brother suffered so much. It was America who treated your brother badly, here in Japan, we love Michael – and always will.
God bless you and your mother and your niece and nephews.

DeborahFfrench | 9/20/2009, 9:38 am EST

I feel deep respect and love for Jsnet and Madonna and I know I am not alone. The strength it must have have taken for Janet, who adored her brother, to go out there and do what she did cannot be imagined. Madonna, you said more eloquently than any other public figure so far what millions of people around the world are feeling. Thankyou so so much.

Michael, we love you and will never forget you.
And we are millions.
