Weekend Rock List: The Beatles’ Studio Albums

9/11/09, 5:22 pm EST

This week, 9.9.09 finally arrived and if you’re like us, you’ve spent the majority of your free time listening to both the studio and mono remasters of the Beatles catalog from With the Beatles to Abbey Road over and over again. (That is, when we weren’t playing The Beatles: Rock Band.) Now that we’re all finally hearing the Fab Four on compact disc like the band likely intended, this week’s Rock List is dedicated to the Beatles’ albums.

They’re all five-star albums in our book, but as George Orwell once said, some Beatles LPs are more equal than others. So tell us your favorites, and on Monday we’ll tally the votes. Let’s keep the balloting at one album per person — sometimes you gotta make a tough choice. For a refresher, check out our guide to all the Beatles’ albums and review of the remasters.

It changes from year to year, in my mind as well as the overall public consensus. It’s been Revolver’s time for a while now. I think this is the year for:

Rubber Soul

Pepper or Abbey Road. Pepper sounds amazing on the remasters. So does AR. so does the white album. Its an embarrassment of riches, really.

I’ll vote for Pepper.

tough choice, but i might have to say Revolver. I still consider Pepper the greater album, but Revolver is my fav.

Njoy Beat | 9/11/2009, 9:16 pm EST

For people picking the white album, yeah, it is their most diverse album, and contains many, many incredible tracks, but if I had to listen to that album from beginning to end more than a couple of times, i’d sick listening to Revolution 9, Goodnight, Wild Honey Pie, and a few others. Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Rubber Soul, and Abbey Road do not have that problem (for the most part).

I can’t choose. I’m like Rolling Stone… they’re all 5 star albums in my book. That’s one thing that made the Beatles so great… ALL their albums were good, start to finish. It all just depends on my mood for what I want to listen to. You just can’t beat The Beatles! They were the best!

It’s really hard to pick just 5. Ask me tomorrow and you might get an entirely different list. The only constant would be that “The White Album” would never make my top 5 list. While it’s got a few great songs on it that are up to the usual high standard, it also includes some of their most embarrassing work ever. (”Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” anyone?) Though pared down to a single album of only the cream, it might make this list.

Kip | 9/12/2009, 12:11 pm EST

I’m torn, I’ll say “Rubber Revolver”

RTickle | 9/13/2009, 6:43 am EST

The least important thing to remember, because I don’t amount to a freckle on the ass of a giraffe, is that the Beatles albums came out in a specific order and as they were swept up in the creative maelstrom of the 60’s so were we.
And so is history.. and what everyone seems to be trying to do is ascertain their creative peak.
What remains is an amazing unfolding of the most beautiful flower ever created.
Stare into the blossom. Why don’t YOU do it? In the road.

Listening to The Beatles as I was growing up, I’m now 57, each album of songs had a direct influence and impact on my life. However, I have always had a strong connection to the songs on Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and The Beatles (white album). I just love their music!
