Paula Abdul and “American Idol” Insiders React to Ellen News

Ex-American Idol judge Paula Abdul wished the show’s newest addition, fourth judge Ellen DeGeneres, success, saying in a statement, “American Idol is a fantastic show that offers an invaluable platform to young talent. Ellen DeGeneres is wildly funny and talented in her own right. I wish her and the show only the best of luck.” Abdul reiterated her support of Ellen on her Twitter, writing, “I think Ellen will b a gr8 judge on Idol. She is wildly funny, talented and I wish her the best of luck!”

Despite the kind words, a source tells Radar Online that Abdul was “very upset” and “stung” that she was permanently replaced on Idol, as she reportedly hoped that a last-minute deal would bring her back to the show she’s been a part of since episode one.

Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres appeared on the radio show of her new co-star Ryan Seacrest yesterday and discussed the inevitable criticism that she lacks music industry experience. “I’m just a fan like everyone else,” DeGeneres told Seacrest. “The people choose. Ultimately, it comes down to them, not some executive in the music industry. I hope to be that voice.”

Randy Jackson agreed with the “interesting, different perspective” Ellen brings to the judges table, telling Fox & Friends yesterday, “[Ellen] can be the voice of the people among us. I think between me, Simon [Cowell] and Kara [DioGuardi], there’s enough musical experts to go around right there.”

DeGeneres said she was “surprised” when the producers approached her, the Los Angeles Times reports. “I didn’t think for a second that it could be me,” she said. “I had no idea this was even a possibility. When they came to me, I was like, ‘I love that show! I would give anything to do it,’ ” DeGeneres said. “I love music, period. Always have. And I’m a huge fan of the show. I haven’t missed an episode since Season One.” DeGeneres also promised fans of the show that she won’t be afraid to stand up against the sardonic Simon Cowell, saying, “I’ll tell him the same thing I’ll tell him when he’s on my show, that he’s mean.”

Rolling Stone caught up with Season Six runner-up Blake Lewis yesterday, and while Lewis says Abdul is irreplaceable, he’s excited to see what DeGeneres will bring to the show. “I think Ellen will rock, she’s funny, I respect her, she’s a great comedian and performer. I think people will listen to her opinion,” said Lewis, who will release his next album Heartbreak on Vinyl October 6th. Lewis added that the show would miss Abdul’s dedication to the contestants (”No one can replace Paula Abdul — she’s the sweetness”), but that the series could use a shake-up. “I think American Idol needs a change, they need to focus more on behind the scenes stuff, how the show actually works,” he tells RS.

Kara DioGuardi, relieved to no longer be the “new kid” or the “fourth judge” on Idol, told Sirius-XM’s Larry Flick that she was “thrilled” that Ellen would be joining the show. “I’m a huge Ellen DeGeneres fan, I think she’s going to bring so much to the show. She’s somebody who loves music, she’s positive, she loves kids,” DioGuardi said. “She is somebody who has watched the show from the beginning, knows everything there is to know about American Idol and I think ultimately it’s going to be a great new energy.”

love Ellen, not as an idol judge doesn’t even fit right, bad move american idol. have to watch and see it will probably be the last time but O’well

cam | 9/11/2009, 1:57 pm EST

My husband and I have loved the show for years. We decided that we wont watch it with Ellen as a judge. It should be someone in the music industry to criticize the talent.HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!!

Ang | 9/11/2009, 2:00 pm EST

Who knows what will happen. Not a big fan of Ellen but the show is not about the judges it is about the talent. Paula was a joke anyway at least we won’t have to hear the babble that comes out of her mouth everytime she spoke or the crazy outfits she tried to promote that are 20 years too young for her.

j spittka | 9/11/2009, 2:04 pm EST

This is the worst possible choice. She is a very annoying person. She will make a big joke of a show I haven’t miss since the beginning. Cannot watch her!!!!

jamie | 9/11/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Stand up and take a bow, Ellen! You are the show’s official token representative of “Gay America.” Hate to say it, Ellen, but you are Idol’s new defense against claims of bigotry against gays. Remember the last Idol where that moron with the stupid hair lost? People were saying that Idol never has had a gay winner…well, not that they knew of at the time anyway. Well, now we’re sure to have a gay winner, right? I mean we have a gay judge, so that’s a shoe-in, right? Well, let’s hope its because the jerk has talent, not because of what he/she does with his/her privates. Most of all, I’m sad for Ellen that they are using her in this way.

cynthia | 9/11/2009, 2:05 pm EST

My family will not watch the show again either. We enjoyed the program but Ellen is not the right pick. What are u thinking Simon. Paula was a good judge and she is music business. Please Simon bring Paula back.

afishaday | 9/11/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Wife and I are well into our 60s and have been avid fans but this woman offers nothing we are interested in and we will not be tuning in any longer… we will miss the show… sad!

Laurie D. | 9/11/2009, 2:10 pm EST

I can’t think of a better person in the whole world. Ellen was guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance and she’s brilliant. Can’t wait!

linda given | 9/11/2009, 2:11 pm EST

I like Ellen…but think she’s the wrong pick for Idol. She goes on and on to be funny, and we need Paula or at least someone in the music industry to help us go in the right direction. May not even watch this year.

dlt | 9/11/2009, 2:11 pm EST

As Woody Guthrie said, Big money and nonsense–the poor (who only have something to lose) fighting for the rich. OK, maybe I’m a bit off-topic.

Simon Cowell’s Margaret Thatcher, a pretentious moron. It don’t matter what he (big daddy) thinks. What matters is what you (democracy) thinks.

Someone as lost as Ellen DeGeneres can only help the show

sarah | 9/11/2009, 2:12 pm EST

I am through with American Idol.
Loved Paula, hate Ellen.
I guess they have to get a gay person on every show.

BL | 9/11/2009, 2:19 pm EST

i think Ellen will be a great addition to the show, she is funny. i think she will mesh very well with the judges. why everybody gotta be so critical – give the lady a chance

julie | 9/11/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I don’t like this pick of Ellen at all. Don’t mind her show but for Idol NO way!!!!

fox300zx | 9/11/2009, 2:29 pm EST

“Idol” its talked about a lot in my home, but with this crazy move, we’ll have to find another “word”. So long Idol!

Vic De Zen | 9/11/2009, 2:40 pm EST

This has the makings to be really good or go horribly awry. I’m wishing for the best!

Emily mo | 9/11/2009, 2:49 pm EST

Ellen is going to be great. I think we all know that. Her humour and honesty will probably go a long way. I don’t see it any other way, actually.

rICKY | 9/11/2009, 3:21 pm EST

PAULA OUT , ELLEN IN, WHO CARES, AT THE END IT’S AMERICA WHO DECIDES AND MOST OF THE TIME HAS GOTTEN IT WRONG (RUBEN, TAYLOR, FANTASIA, ALLEN)IT’S REALLY A SHAME BECAUSE THEY DISRUPT THE CONTINUITY OF THE SHOW, PAULA WAS RECOVERY FROM DRUGS NOW SHE GETS DUMPED, NO A NICE FUTURE AHEAD OF HERS, HOPE SHE FINDS HELP FOR THE DEPRESSION.

John K | 9/11/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Good bye idol.
Won’t spend time with Ellen or promote her lifestyle by supporting the show. I’m sure plenty of others will embrace it, so our family is no loss.

nowwhat | 9/11/2009, 4:07 pm EST

Love Ellen’s comedic genious.
However, after seeing her as a guest judge on ‘U Think U Can Dance’, (which sucked BIG TIME by the way!)one has to wonder why the H*LL they thought she would be a good choice as a judge on AI!
It reminds of the time when Dennis Miller was brought onboard as a commentator for Monday Night Football!(That sucked Big Time, too!)
That went over as a LEADED LEAD FILLED LEAD BALLOON
Needless to say, It didn’t last!
No offense Ellen, I don’t think you’re going to last either!
Your jokes are going to get old really fast!

omg | 9/11/2009, 4:13 pm EST

who cares?….oh wait, me D: lol

PHIL IN INDY | 9/11/2009, 4:25 pm EST

ELLEN IS A PERFECT FIT, SHE IS WITTY AND SPONTANIOUS, SHE REPRESENTS THE AVERAGE PERSON THAT LISTENS AND LOVES MUSIC,THATS WHAT THE SHOW NEEDED NOT A MUSIC INDUSTRY PERSON.

Greg | 9/11/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Thanks to the few posters here who remind us that homophobia is still around, and that there are mouth-breathers who look for a forum to express their bigotry. I’m certain that none of the advertisers who buy Idol time will miss you.

Kims Deeler | 9/11/2009, 4:47 pm EST

unfortunately most serious idol watchers are inbred homophobes who have shit taste in music. not all of them, but a good majority of comment posters here. its a shame, i like the show and think ellen will be good.

Emily | 9/11/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Ellen is a brilliant comedian and an awesome choice! I personally don’t watch American Idol, but I will definitely give it a chance just to hear her witty comments. If you’ve ever seen her stand-up, you would understand that she does in fact know a great deal about music!

On a side note, I am saddened by the high level of bigotry and ignorance found in some of these comments. So sad.

John R. | 9/11/2009, 5:00 pm EST

Give the lady a break. She turned her lover from gay to bi-sexual. She’s a miracle worker and she’ll work miracles on Idol. From a top rated show to the dump.

Andrew | 9/11/2009, 5:17 pm EST

I didn’t even think about her being gay until I read these posts. Now that I think about it, I’m pretty proud of that.

janut | 9/11/2009, 5:29 pm EST

BYE BYE AMERICAN IDOL NO ELLEN IN MY HOUSE

WakeUp | 9/11/2009, 5:40 pm EST

Her sexuality has nothing to do with the show. However, it has a lot to do with the ‘reasoning’ behind many of these comments. DUDES: you just can’t stand the fact that a woman has more power, money, character, and sexuality than you…AND that she could plz your woman 5 times better.
CHICKS: You can’t stand a woman being so successful, ya bitch for the rights than become you own worse hypocritical enemy.
She broke many boundaries early in her career and paid for them. But, she opened the door for many ppl after. She will rock on Idol or anything else she does…because b4 being ‘gay’ she s talented, intelligent, and funny as hell.
My hubby and I will tune into Idol for the first time since week 5 of Season 1…because of her!!!

LEONARD ROGERS | 9/11/2009, 5:47 pm EST

NO MORE IDOL FOR THIS FAMILY. THE PRODUCERS REALLY HAVE THEIR HEAD UP THEIR A-S…

shellbell | 9/11/2009, 6:16 pm EST

seriously? you will not watch idol because ellen is gay, but you will watch with paula who is HIGH most of the time…? You won’t support ellen’s lifestyle, but you will support paula’s? this makes no sense. listen to what you are all saying…and if you don’t support the “gays”, did you support clay aiken or adam lambert…or was the show tuned out during their performances?

tom h | 9/11/2009, 6:44 pm EST

Sad to see so many homophobics in a rolling stone blog. Can’t youz read something else? Or listen to Rush Limbaugh? Welcome to the Show Ellen!

Disgusted with Disgusted | 9/11/2009, 6:54 pm EST

I think its amazing that in our country, supposedly the best and most free in the world, we still have the evangelical freaks who refuse to change becuase they repress themselves. I pray for your eternally burnin’ souls.

It is the jump the shark moment for this show

crb | 9/11/2009, 8:48 pm EST

I think Ellen is awsome and she is soooooo for real, we all need someone like her in our lives Her love of people and life itself means so much

johnnie f. king | 9/11/2009, 9:41 pm EST

I think Ellen will be fine, but I will still miss Paula, after all she was there from the beginning and did a great job!

from blind to deaf | 9/11/2009, 11:14 pm EST

Paula was BAD (yuck!) ! Ellen sucks too in all respects. Can somebdoy stop brining rich people as judges who know crap about music ???

me | 9/11/2009, 11:34 pm EST

At least I dont have to share the stage with MC SCAT CAT!

Lee | 9/11/2009, 11:52 pm EST

If ‘the people choose’ then why is a non-industry voice needed on the panel? isn’t the whole point of the judges that ‘the people’ are given expert industry opinions to consider along with their own personal reactions to the performers?

Laura | 9/11/2009, 11:58 pm EST

What does Ellen’s ‘lifestyle’ (whatever that even means) or sexuality have to do with her being a judge on a talent competition. Is this 1951?

lilachu | 9/12/2009, 2:06 am EST

Good ears and great taste are what it takes to judge American Idol. Ellen has both and I bet she’ll be a better judge than those stalwarts in the music industry. As Adam Lambert sings… a change is gonna come… and that’s Ellen’s inclusion in the next season.

Go Ellen!

hada | 9/12/2009, 11:12 am EST

she will be fine because the show is kind of a joke anyway. The other 3 judges are pretty okay, and of course Simon is intelligent, funny, and rude. So, the circus moves forward.

rupaul | 9/12/2009, 11:14 am EST

get ready for at least 3 seasons of lesbian chicks winning on this show.

hey, if they let me in on the action i’d vote for ‘em too!

jjk | 9/12/2009, 11:57 am EST

Won’t be on my tv.

moon | 9/12/2009, 12:21 pm EST

The people that moronically say they will not watch the show because of Ellen are just that …. MORONS. The show isn’t about the judges, it’s about the talent. While I know it’s not perfect, look what Idol did for Carry Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson. Paula was annoying at timnes so I just hit the “fast forward” button. I’m not a big fan of Ellen’s but who cares? Land of the free, home of the brave … pull your homophobic heads out of your bigoted asses!

Gwerb | 9/12/2009, 3:02 pm EST

This show sucks either way.

dlt | 9/12/2009, 3:06 pm EST

AI is (at best) virtual music for virtual people. No probing essentialists; just skating existentialists

Rose | 9/12/2009, 9:07 pm EST

What a GREAT choice. Finally some good entertainment with the judges. Paula was cute, but she rambled her thoughts. GO ELLEN

Alexis | 9/12/2009, 9:31 pm EST

I love Ellen. She’s one of my favorite comedians. Ellen, being an avid fan of music, will add a fresh touch to the show. I never thought I’d watch American Idol after Adam Lambert was on it, but now I can’t wait to tune in and witness magic.

By the way: It doesn’t matter what sexuality she is, or anyone is, at all. It’s best to focus on her achievments and who she is as a person.

Much love.

most of u r a**holes | 9/12/2009, 11:21 pm EST

i think Ellen will be awesome i just can not stand the way the people posting comments are stuck in the 50’s i have always watched AI since it started Paula has always been the one i wanted to shut the hell up she talked a bunch about nothing she was just a seat filler glad they choose Ellen that my help me love this show again

yorkshire_Oz | 9/13/2009, 1:10 pm EST

People will tune in for awhile for novelty, ‘the without Paula factor’. Then Am Idol will peter out in ratings. Alot of males watched Am Idol because of Paula -very fanciable-and alot of women watched with the interplay between her and Cowell. Result: no Paula means I reckon a drop in ratings by at least 30 to 40%. Idiots!!

Anonymous | 9/13/2009, 3:08 pm EST

I wonder how much they are paying Ellen, vs how much they offered Paula.

headband | 9/13/2009, 3:10 pm EST

fuck ellen, she sucks ass and is totally overated and her lame ass dancing makes me want 2 puke…AI offically jumped the shark

Anonymous | 9/13/2009, 3:10 pm EST

I am still anxiously awaiting when they replace Randy Jackson, with a kid from a Retard Academy. No one will ever notice the difference.

glenn beck | 9/13/2009, 3:16 pm EST

fuck ellen

glenn beck | 9/13/2009, 3:17 pm EST

ellen a no-talent liberal fraud whore

berninarita | 9/13/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Ellen is nice and a good choice but Paula was my favorite and irreplaceable. The very reason she left ~ the outrageous wage discrepancy is just another example of our unjust society. In my opinion, all start get overpaid. But for Paula to get less that Ryan or Simon is just wrong.

Paige | 9/13/2009, 7:25 pm EST

I love Ellen, and I’m glad she’ll be part of the show.

Some of you are really rude.

Ellen is tragic AI mistake. She has no- absolutely zero – ability to judge music and singing competition. What she will say to talented singer except her jokes?
There is nothing about her lifestyle. SHE HAS NO ANY EXPERIENCE IN MUSIC FIELD. NEVER HAD. And she’s a judge. What a joke! Funniest joke she’s ever made. There will be no more trust
on AL judgement.AND THIS IS VERY SERIOUS.If AI wants to live longer.
Ellen must always to agree with experienced Simon, Randy and Kara, or to say something she can afford-jokes. I like- I don’t like is working on usial viewer level, not AI judge.

comeonAI.. | 9/14/2009, 4:20 pm EST

All businesses and shows have it’s own uperfections. That’s what it is. Why AI is adding extra unperfection- Ellen as a judge?, along with not perfect voting system, judges mistakes on vision of talent and so on.. Ellen is real and perfect unperfection.

*^*^*^ | 9/14/2009, 4:41 pm EST

We all know that Ellen is talented comedian. Now Ellen DeGeneres is making herself a national joke. Well , it’s her choice to be. She will loose her image, because she’s OK in her own show. But it doesn’t mean she can be everywhere. Especially AI judge. It’s not her stage.

ToBraveToFail | 9/15/2009, 6:49 pm EST

It doesn’t really matter who replaces Paula because the only musical careers generated by American Idol are those that continue the status quo of the music industry. Elvis, James Brown,Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Elton John, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, U2, Nirvana – the truly revolutionary bands would never have made it on a show like this. This show proves that talent alone is not enough, and that’s all this show is – one big talent show.

Yorkshire_Oz | 9/22/2009, 2:43 pm EST

Days of AmIdol numbered now. Cowels inytense covert attempts behind the scenes to get Abdul back have seemingly failed. What next? Cowel is no idiot, he knows the Abdul-Cowel thing means big bucks. Cowel also runs a UK show the X factor- like Am Idol for ALL ages. Prediction: Cowel, Abdul and maybe Sharon Osbourne in ‘X factor USA’, next year, when Am Idol flops just too much to hold decent ratings end of this year. This maybe all planned ya know…just a thought!

Yorkshire_Oz | 9/23/2009, 7:06 am EST

Oh, sorry, the new show with paula and Simon (and maybe Randy Jackson or Sharon Osbourne) will probably be ‘Americas Got talent’…that is teh current show in UK that replaced the ‘X factor’. Whatever the name…the changes made will be a reversion ultimately. Cowel controls this all most probably!

TV_Insider | 9/23/2009, 7:22 am EST

This is probably true, from all accounts. Man, that Cowel really does control the agenda in many ways. Also Paula wants a chance at a comeback-beautiful timing eh…so when AI flops, or ‘peters out’ as you say…then the time is ripe for the change and re-package!!!
Well spotted!!!

Montanagrl | 11/17/2009, 6:29 pm EST

I have watched Idol on and off since the beginning, I have always liked Paula but she has some serious dependencies she needs to work out, so she was not really doing her job to the best of her ability. I love Ellen, I think her being on the show will bring it some much needed character. She is a funny woman with a good heart–just what the show needs. Sexuality is not an issue here and should not be an issue ever.
