Rolling Stones Reissuing “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!” With Big Bonuses

9/10/09, 1:06 pm EST

In November 1969, the Rolling Stones’ staged an epic two-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden that provided tunes for the band’s first official Stones-approved live album, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ya-Ya’s!, ABKCO will release a remastered deluxe and super-deluxe edition of the live album, a three-disc/one-DVD box set complete with five unreleased songs from the MSG shows and a DVD featuring the Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out film directed by the Maysles Brothers — the documentary team behind the Stones’ classic Gimme Shelter. In the film, the Stones hang out with Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead, mess around during the Ya-Ya’s cover shoot, perform the five unreleased songs and much more.

Additionally, one disc in the set will be dedicated to the sets from the MSG shows’ two opening acts, B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner. The set will also include a replica poster and a 56-page booklet featuring photos, essays, Lester Bangs’ original Rolling Stone review of the album and much more (read Bangs’ full review here). The “super-deluxe” version of the box set will also house a three picture disc vinyl version of Ya-Ya’s, complete with etched cover images and the Stones’ signatures, as well as an enlarged version of the replica poster and 56-page booklet. To top it all off, the box set will come with a voucher allowing fans to download the Ya-Ya’s version of the Stones’ “I’m Free” for Guitar Hero 5.

The deluxe box will hit shelves November 3rd, while the super deluxe set arrives two weeks later on November 17th. Check out the track list below:

The greatest band ever! The greatest live LP ever!

Kevin the Robot | 9/10/2009, 2:14 pm EST

Are you telling me you can’t fit the 5 bonus tracks on disc 1? The original album is only 43 minutes long. I’m calling shenanigans on this one.

r soul | 9/10/2009, 2:31 pm EST

this is not the band’s first live albulm as indicated in the above. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ITS ALL ABOUT TO HAPPEN, LET’S HEAR FOR THE FANTASTIC ROLLING STONES. or am i missing something. (Got Live If Want It)

Arlington, VA | 9/10/2009, 2:44 pm EST

I remember really enjoying this album. But wasn’t it accused of containing massive overdubs?

hokeycoke | 9/10/2009, 3:20 pm EST

fuck this. disc 2 is bull. disc 3 i dont even want, and album has already been remastered before. just buy gimme shelter and listen to ya ya’s as it is now.

oh carol | 9/10/2009, 4:08 pm EST

oh yeahhhhhh let it bleed on out to us dying fans thirsty for another shot of stones!

StrummerJones | 9/10/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Best live LP remains Before The Flood, but Ya-Ya’s has always been good for that sexy electric Love In Vain.

Jere | 9/10/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Can’t say I’m really excited for this. Couldn’t the second album have been maybe the concert without overdubs (plus those bonus tracks)? I mean, unless they’ve got a 25-minute version of “Satisfaction” on there, this seems like a major ripoff.

J Bert | 9/10/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Wasn’t the dsd version from 2003 supposed to be as good as the sound could get? sounded pretty good to me. But i presume they’re just gonna compress it all to trick people into thinking it sounds better, like they did with this years post 1971 reissues.

Anonymous | 9/10/2009, 4:40 pm EST

will the super deluxe box set and the box set contain the same thing except for the DVD? i wanna know some prices.

Randy Wilkinson | 9/10/2009, 9:16 pm EST

The Stones have always been my favorite band & this has always been my favorite live album ever by any artist! (The Who’s “Live At Leeds” being a fairly close second.)I always hoped they would release a version with the full track listing. (I was at the Baltimore concert, from which “Love In Vain” was actually taken.) True, there have been some overdubs but they are fairly minimal, mostly vocal related. (The one that sticks out in my mind, from an article I read a year or two back, which described the exact overdubs is when Mick shouts “Watch it!” at the beginning of JJ Flash.) I would have preferred that the bonus tracks were inserted within the track listing in their proper order, rather than being on a separate disc but it’s ok. I’m still stoked that this is coming out at all! Charlie’s good tonight isn’t he?

George Mang | 9/10/2009, 9:21 pm EST

I’m on it. The 1969 tour was a pivotal moment for the Rolling Stones because it was during this tour when they really became “the greatest rock and roll band in the world”. “Get Your Ya Ya’s Out” is a great album. The additional tracks, the DVD, along with some cool memorabilia is a must for any collector. I saw this show. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue were were on fire. What’s not to like?

R. Geurtsen | 9/10/2009, 10:00 pm EST

As far as I know, ABCKO doesn’t not YET have the proper signatures on the papers for this release. Why is RS blowing news and does not double check.

Alex | 9/10/2009, 10:50 pm EST

I’ll look forward to Rolling Stone magazine’s review of the album(s), like they did with the recent Beatles releases, before I buy the new Stones releases.

Anonymous | 9/10/2009, 11:05 pm EST

The Stones probably want to keep the original CD running order “as is”, but in this day and age, just stick that bonus tracks on the end of the original CD. People can make their own playlists anyway (and as a bonus, include the original correct running order as a bonus somewhere in the liner notes, so we can make a playlist that represents the actual concert(s).
If they “remaster” the way they did with these last few ’70s CDs, DON’T BOTHER!!! They made some major mistakes in the process of remixing (”Star Star” and beginning of “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” being only two of the most egregious examples).
I’m a HUGE Stones fanatic, but just as at Altamont, they are so concerned with their “legend” that they contradict common sense all too often and still don’t seem to *get it*. Keith, you’re supposed to be sober, just DO THE RIGHT THING! Place ALL the Stones songs on 1 CD (thus helping keep the price down a bit, also), and if it’s remixed, bring in someone world renowned to do it, and be sure you have FINAL APPROVAL on the mixes!!! If you’re going to do it, DO IT RIGHT! Hey, spend a few dollars and hire some of the people who did the Beatles new mixes… “It’s not about the money”, right? Prove it! Your lifelong fans (read: consumers), DESERVE THE BEST! …and so does your legacy.

As the last Blogger indicates, the proper signatures to my knowlege have not been notarized & approved by British Authorities, so this reissue CD will probably get delayed for months, maybe even years. An ambitious project indeed, but not well thought out. I would expect to see the new Ya yas Cd released in 2011, when the authorities will have carefully reviewed everything.
I thought I would set the record straight, any inquiries may be directed to me at my offices in London, where I head up a prestigious law practice -Good Day

wankme off | 9/10/2009, 11:16 pm EST

the stones are fucking wankers and are a crap studio band!
the glimmer bum boys have had nothing musically relevent to say since slightly after the the shit that crawled out of the primordial ooze made the mistake of going on to dry land which was the last time they issed anything remotely resembling a fucking song.

dag62 | 9/11/2009, 1:41 am EST

First off I thought the Stones lost control of their pre 1971 catalog in getting rid of Allen Klein. Hence I think anyones gripe should be with Abkco with how this is packaged not the Stones. The Who finally released the ENTIRE live at leeds concert in correct running order as the concert was presented. That should have been done here. They did what is the easiest thing to do…take some of the other songs from the show and throw them on another disc. Also I think they also played Gimme Shelter at the 69 shows but that is not included. Abkco has always done a rotten job in repackaging the Stones over the years so it should not be a surprise. It all about making money and doing as little as possible to make it. It’s nice to have some more tracks from the shows but unfortunate that it could not be done a little better…
Even if the Stones are not involved with this release they dont care about what they have done in the past anyway. Would be nice if they released some kick ass shows from 72-73 period which I think is the greatest concert period of their career.

Rubey | 9/11/2009, 1:43 am EST

“As far as I know, ABCKO doesn’t not YET have the proper signatures on the papers for this release. Why is RS blowing news and does not double check.”

It’s already available for preorder.

“I remember really enjoying this album. But wasn’t it accused of containing massive overdubs?”

Relatively few when compared to other live albums of the era. This IS what the Stones sounded like live in 1969.

“this is not the band’s first live albulm as indicated in the above. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ITS ALL ABOUT TO HAPPEN, LET’S HEAR FOR THE FANTASTIC ROLLING STONES. or am i missing something. (Got Live If Want It)”

If you read above thisis the first live recording the Stones APPROVED of releasing. Got Live was a record company decision to cash in on their popularity at the time.

Weegie | 9/11/2009, 1:49 am EST

In Bill Wyman’s book of the Stones he said they originally wanted to release the whole concert including the BB and Ike and Tina portions but the record company weasels nixed it because, “White people don’t know who they are” :(
And somebody seems to have forgotten “Got It Live if You Want It” ! Live albums are always disapointing….there’s not one live album in the history of music that can stand up to a first rate studio album. Closest are Bob Marley’s 1976 “Live”, Sly at Woodstock, and Otis at Monterey. Actually The Stone’s “Stripped” was a better live album than Ya- Ya’s ;) Ya-Ya’s has a heavy druggie 60’s sound that doesn’t really represent the Stones very well. Love in Vain is the one track that really stands out, with Mick Taylor’s beautiful playing.

Liar from S.C. | 9/11/2009, 7:20 am EST

I’ve got nothing to say, but it’s ok…good morning.
Bring it on…quit bellyachin’..and then die,, the world goes on.
Gimme Shelter,Gimme STONES.

Jack Dublin | 9/11/2009, 8:18 am EST

The last CD I purchased was the Stones’”A Bigger Bang”. I doubt I’ll be buying this one. I just can’t get right with buying each of these albums again and again. I already have two versions of “Ya-Ya’s,” the album and the CD, in addition to the movie Gimme Shelter. Do I really need another?

Chicago Blues | 9/11/2009, 9:58 am EST

Didn’t get the last remaster, so I will pick up this one. Great Stray Cat Blues on this set also Midnight Rambler & JJF.

cbolt | 9/11/2009, 11:23 am EST

I love the Stones!

Cbolt | 9/11/2009, 11:27 am EST

How about puting 25 x 5 out on DVD or adding to it to make it up to date. Its the only descent Doc on the band that I have seen.

tony montana | 9/11/2009, 12:32 pm EST

this is kick ass!
i fuckin’ love the stones.
the greatest rock n’ roll band!

Brock_Vond | 9/11/2009, 1:03 pm EST

I just hope they don’t release them in an SACD format again …

Its completely useless, like HD DVD

MikeZ. | 9/11/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Those WERE NOT SACDs, they were DSDs !!! A WORLD of difference in those two formats. Direct Stream Digital is a state-of-the-art stereo recording.

bum boy in bondage | 9/11/2009, 8:15 pm EST

i once had a wank while watching jagger pretending to blow the mike!
mmm…mmm…blow the mike.

Randy Wilkinson | 9/11/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Would have been nice if a few other tunes played live on that tour, but not at the MSG concerts, were included like “Gimmie Shelter” or even “Brown Sugar”, which was played for the first time ever at Altamont, two years before it was released!
Also, for what it’s worth, the ABKCO reissues were originally issued in SACD/CD hybrid
format (stereo, not multi-channel).
I have the entire collection & they register as SACD on my Onkyo SP-504. They came in digi-paks. From what I found online tonight, if I understood correctly, they are now available in the standard jewel cases but in the DSD format.

maria | 9/12/2009, 5:56 am EST

another example of rip off

Alf | 9/12/2009, 4:47 pm EST

If you are a true Stones fan, all you have ever wanted is more material from this great period. So who the fuck would complain about that? Ill pay whatever for the deluxe edition. My personal favorite live recording ever. Long live The Greatest Rock n Roll Band in the World

Anonymous | 9/13/2009, 1:20 pm EST

The Stones brand keeping up with the Beatles one?

Jethro | 9/14/2009, 3:34 am EST

I’ll buy the live versions of “Under My Thumb” and “I’m Free” on iTunes. I already own the regular album. I’m sick of all the repackaging the Stones have done to be honest. Really, a live version of “Satisfaction” being released in 2009 is just boring. Go watch Gimme Shelter.

Jethro | 9/14/2009, 3:35 am EST

Alf: I’m a Stones fan, and I’d complain about that.

Jethro | 9/14/2009, 3:41 am EST

MikeZ: You know what a state of the art stereo recording is? A direct analog transfer of the original master tapes onto high grade vinyl.

Kenny Rankin | 9/14/2009, 11:53 am EST

They played two shows over two nights and all we get are 5 extra songs? What is that? I love BB and Tina as much as the next person but those should have been separate releases. We have more of the Who’s “Live At Leeds” and the Allman Brother’s “Live At Fillmore East” so this was an opportunity to have more of this legendary show.

Meshugenna | 9/14/2009, 1:56 pm EST

The “epic two night stand” at the Garden consisted of three shows, including the more than infamous “breakfast show” on the afternoon after Thanksgiving. And, as one who was at all three shows (we all bitched at their nerve charging $7 for tix!) – followed up on Saturday by the Airplane at Fillmore East – their whole show was 15 songs. What’ll be on the discs is their complete show, though not in order.

Hock Ptooey | 9/14/2009, 3:20 pm EST

I’m so happy that this is being remastered and re-released. I was at that show, in ‘69. If you listen very closely, at the end of track 4 or the beginning of track 5, you can hear me fart. It was an impressive release, for I held it in as long as I could. I did not want to gross out my date or those around me, but I couldn’t hold it in much longer. It started out as a high pitch vweeee then crescendoed to an explosive vrrrap. Relief quickly followed by embarassment. Fortunately, those around me didn’t mind and the odor quickly dissipated.

Anonymous | 9/15/2009, 10:38 am EST

MikeZ: the ABCKO albums were IN FACT originally issued in dual SACD/CD format. Sorry you missed out. The sound quality is impeccable. Much better than the new Beatles reissues.

I hope the footage of Hendrix (his birthday)backstage with the Stones is included and will have the accompaning sound.

bonsaipark | 9/22/2009, 12:20 pm EST

Like others, I wish this had been the full concert(s?), undubbed, and in the original running order. I’ve bought Ya-Ya’s too many times already, even though I love it. Four discs is just too much for five previously-rejected songs.

chic | 9/24/2009, 6:17 pm EST

any material from the boys is for me worth its weight in gold! if your a fan since the begining and i am money should be no object.you mean you dont have the deluxe version of “let it bleed” the book? shame on you this is the greatest rock & roll band in the world

redbear22222 | 10/4/2009, 6:31 am EST

Am only luke warm about this one – Ya Yas is great … but a few extra tracks isn’t that overwhelming. We know the Stones have a massive amount of unreleased live recording featuring the sublime Mick Taylor on guitar – particularly from the ‘72 & ‘73 tours. (eg the ‘73 Brussels Affair bootleg versions alone are mind blowing – raw, nasty & all powerful & Leeds Lungs is great too). While releasing bootleg stuff has given Bob Dylan a new audience & relevance, the Stones refuse to do this & instead keep churning out mediocre material with the current weak lineup. I mean, who wants to hear Ron Wood screwing up the lead parts to Exile & Sticky Fingers tracks etc for the millionth time in the latest crap live album? Their golden era as a live act was with Taylor, they should just admit it, release those gems & give him the credit he richly deserves.

grneyes | 10/17/2009, 12:15 pm EST

This, along with Gimme Shelter comming on blu-ray on Dec. 1st, is the best news I’ve heard from the music business in a long time. ABKCO is doing a better job of issuing the Stones that the Stones themselves.
I hope this provokes the Stones into finally releasing LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE ROLLING STONES on DVD and blu-ray.

garanimal | 10/19/2009, 2:08 pm EST

why must we only get a taste of the 69′ tour? Just put it all out on line and charge us for what we want.

KP | 10/21/2009, 12:55 pm EST

Some historical facts on this release are that Disc 1 & 3 are the original format of the record as the stones intended it, disc 2 is a bonus.
The album was overdubed simply to polish it and why the hell not and not to hide anything, I’ve got a copy of the original accetate so i know.

ABKCO and the stones have a bitter past, the stones have no control over the package or for that matter on any release but thats not to say that they havent been consulted on this release, as for adding 5 tracks to either the end or within the running order could lead ABKCO into legal troubles for messing with th recorded work, they only have rights to what was delivered under contract, but im sure the stones are glad to see the original concept with BB King, ike & Tina included.

the 70s reissues had nothing to do with ABKCO cause they were released on the stones label own label and later sold to virgin from Sticky Fingers onwards.

Anyway my old copy of yah ya’s is getting worn out and its good to see it re released it is by far the best live stones your gonna get recorded at a time when they had all to loose and alot to prove, as for belly aching about the format, cost etc it’s there for those who want a bit extra or collectors you can still get a standard copy so for f***sake “lets hear one more time for the greatest rock & roll band in the world the rolling stones”!

squid1953 | 10/21/2009, 7:02 pm EST

Now, I bought this f-ing disc in LP format, 8-track, Cassette, CD, “Remastered” CD, SACD/CD hybrid. I’ve given enough. I’ll just wait until it’s 10 bucks on Amazon. if not – Piratebay!

dvdunplugged | 10/24/2009, 7:48 am EST

I agree, stick the 5 unreleased tracks onto Disc 1 – don’t make a rip off out of it.
The Stones Ya Ya’s and The Who’s Live At Leeds are seminal live albums. You can now get the complete Who show for £12 so this really sucks!

santiago | 10/27/2009, 5:47 pm EST

paint it black,you devil…

MIX TAYLOR | 11/7/2009, 11:54 pm EST

Here is a tip for you all YA YAs Stones heads, The maysles brothers should re release Gimmer Shelter and Get Yer Ya yas out as a concert instead of just a song here or there mixed with the business bullsh*t of Altamont, Altamont was a stupidly organised festival where the stage was 2 feet high with no security around the backstage area being protected by violent bikers. Give us the music not the crap, id all go out and buy a bootleg copy of the 72 tour film Ladies & Gentlemen the Rolling Stones or get the “Brussels Affair 73 Bootleg cd both serve as better and truer Mick Taylor era live products,
