Grohl, Novoselic Didn’t Approve Cobain’s “Guitar Hero” Avatar

9/10/09, 5:08 pm EST

By now you’ve seen the clip of a digitized Kurt Cobain rocking his way through Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” on Guitar Hero 5. It’s an image so bizarre, it not only freaked out Rolling Stone, but sent Courtney Love into a Twitter rampage as she began responding to critics arguing she sold Kurt out with the GH5 avatar. In one colorful Tweet, Love essentially blames Dave Grohl for the playable Cobain, writing to someone who accosted her on Twitter, “you can assrape dave he was always a bad seed and is stillriding the shit while i take bullets if theres a hell hes going. im not.”

In a statement issued this afternoon, Grohl and Novoselic say they are “dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game,” adding, “The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate — we have no control whatsoever in that area.” The pair ask Activision to “re-lock” the Cobain character and state, “It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.” Their full statements are after the jump.

Look back at Cobain’s remarkable career in photos, interviews, reviews and more from the RS archives.

In an statement released slightly earlier today, Grohl and Novoselic said, “Activision is responding to queries regarding the usage of Kurt Cobain’s likeness in Guitar Hero 5 with the following statement ‘Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.’ Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, the two surviving members of Nirvana, have no say whatsoever in the usage of Kurt Cobain’s likeness.”

Look back at Cobain’s rare photos, artwork and journal entries.

While the remaining Nirvana members needed to grant permission for GH5 to use “Lithium” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” it appears Love acted alone in approving the avatar. However, Courtney herself wrote during her Twitter explosion, “i dragged my ass and never signed [off] on the avatar, let alone this fucking ‘feature’.”

Love’s recent “comments” on Twitter seem to negate everything Activision’s Tim Riley told RS when we talked to him about the Cobain avatar on GH5. “Courtney supplied us with photos and videos and knew exactly what she wanted Kurt to look like,” Riley told RS. “She picked the wardrobe and hair style, which turned out to be the ‘Teen Spirit’ look, then we went back and forth over changes — some subtle, some not so subtle… She was actually great to work with. She got back with comments pretty quickly.”

So it appears that, regardless of what Love has Twittered in the past 48 hours, she did sign off on the Cobain avatar and either 1) forgot she did, 2) is reacting defensively to the current backlash or 3) as Love insinuates, her ever-growing parade of lawyers and financial wizards signed off without her knowing. Either way, if you have two hours to kill, you might want to read the last two days of Courtney Love’s Twitter for a bewildering, stream-of-conscious look at the Hole singer.

This is a statement regarding Nirvana, Guitar Hero and the likeness of the late Kurt Cobain.

We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game.  The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate – we have no control whatsoever in that area.

While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants.   We urge Activision to do the right thing in “re-locking” Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future.

It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters.  Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world.  We feel he deserves better.

Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl

lol! Poor Kurt. They made him look like an idiot doing bad karaoke.

I love the beginning of that video when Kurt is doing that rap intro or whatever that was.

But the question remains... | 9/10/2009, 5:50 pm EST

Did Daniel Johnston ever get any kind of royalties for GH5 using his t-shirt design on Cobain’s avatar?

Ernie | 9/10/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Could be worse, Kurt (or John Lenon) doing “Happiness is a warm gun”…… or Jimmi Hendrix covers Huey Lewis doing “I want a new drug”. (Don’t dis me, I already feel bad)

Kinda kool have Dave and Krist always end up looking like the smart ones…then again, not much of a fucking stretch when it comes to Love. She’s horrid.

Andrew | 9/10/2009, 6:42 pm EST

WOW! That was just painful to watch. What dumbnuts @ activision really thought that would be cool to see kurt (not even playing guitar) singing and dancing around like that! seriously..why don’t next they could have micheal jackson on there w/ out his nose piece jerking off little boys..fucking morans!!!

George | 9/10/2009, 6:51 pm EST

I hope Cobain would appreciate the freaking absurdity of this! I doubt he was nearly the uptight ninny that all his leeches seem to be about the dang thing. I, for one, got a great laugh out of it.

hurrdurr | 9/10/2009, 7:03 pm EST

that’s not Kurt :P that’s a young, unshaven Axl

Mr. Bojangels | 9/10/2009, 7:03 pm EST

Shame, shame, shame on Love for allowing the great Kurt Cobain to be portrait in this ridiculous fashion. I’m sure Kurt would not have been caught dead playing this crap.

tim | 9/10/2009, 7:04 pm EST

im not a nirvana fan but from what i read and see kurt cobain did have good sense of humour….and its sad to see someone who really has not much talent has sole rights to his songs, face, merchandise she wont have to work much or worry about money….maybe his daughter should be in control

oh the irony | 9/10/2009, 7:07 pm EST

RS forgot to mention that Courtney is now suing Activision. Oh, this will be FAR more entertaining to watch than any movie/television this year.

oh the irony | 9/10/2009, 7:08 pm EST

I mean television show.

Blas | 9/10/2009, 7:17 pm EST

What is with Activision? They let Van Halen take Michael Anthony out of Van Halen — giving us Wolfgang instead (no wonder they have to give the game away!) — and now this junk?

Glad I ordered my copy of the Beatles Rock Band.

Adam | 9/10/2009, 7:19 pm EST

Krist and Dave have it right, and I’m sure any real fans of Kurt’s would agree.

Sure, it may just be a video game, but come on, this was just done without any respect for who Kurt was.

Then again, Kurt might think it’s hilarious.

thia | 9/10/2009, 7:19 pm EST

Love gives herself a bad name!!! OMG What was she thinking??? Kurt Cobain was an iconic artist. She has him looking like a pathetic loser at the karaoke bar. Sad Sad Sad. Courtney can lament and twitter all she wants about how she had nothing to do with it!! I think we all know how Kurt died – she had everything to do with it. I bet poor Kurt is rolling over somewhere!!

Brad | 9/10/2009, 7:19 pm EST

Let’s not forget there’s also a Skeleton playing the drums.. This IS fake isn’t it?

Bad taste on the Cobain clip tho.

virtual virtual reality... | 9/10/2009, 7:28 pm EST

i don’t know, i still think playing a real guitar is way more fun that GH.

Another Over-rated Singer | 9/10/2009, 7:46 pm EST

Cobain was the over-rated talent of the 90’s – making it cool to use heroin, hate yourself and everything in your life, and not ever bother practicing your instrument. The only good thing to come from Nirvana was Dave Grohl.

Anonymous | 9/10/2009, 7:56 pm EST

FUCK YOU COURTNEY LOVE

STOP DISGRACING KURT!!!

The Burning Sounds | 9/10/2009, 8:04 pm EST

welcome to the current state of the music scene, folks! If you watch the ’sold out’ nirvana video opening scene, you would realise KC HATED all this corporate crap and would never have been part of it. ‘aneurism’ has already been used in a swedish bank tv ad.
‘RAGE FOR THE MACHINE’ eh?

ArizonaAnton | 9/10/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Why would you pretend to play a guitar instead of actually enlightening yourself and learning to PLAY an instrument.
Courtney Love is a parasite who is probably responsible for his death by either a.) hiring someone to murder him or b.) making him so depressed to be married to such a horrid person that he wanted to kill himself. And then she does this. What a waste of skin, air water and whatever junk she still shoots up.

kinda | 9/10/2009, 8:13 pm EST

kinda disturbing.. even a hardcore fan wont buy this shit

Jonas Cobain | 9/10/2009, 8:21 pm EST

“Nothing is sacred” isn’t a negative statement. Don’t revere this, or any, man or woman. He was a musician, not a god.

tephanie | 9/10/2009, 8:40 pm EST

This is very dissapointing. Poor Krist and Dave having to continously relive the horror of Kurt’s life beeing exploited and even worse, missunderstood. Kurt would never perform like that. Nirvana’s music means so much to me and when I watch this video it tears me apart inside. They didn’t even give Kurt his guitar.

HolePigJunkieJunkieQueen | 9/10/2009, 9:26 pm EST

WTF!! The fool blows his squash off when he’s got the world by the balls and his fuckin’ head case wench sells him out years later and then has issues with it? Then Activision steps up to the plate and runs it home with the most complete and utter lack of respect for the dead since the wench herself apparently gave them the Ok to be a bunch of necro’s. I’m not sure who is the biggest whore here!! Take your pick.

Disstan | 9/10/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Why are you people even playing that game? Oh I get it, you suck at the real thing.

dave in jersey | 9/10/2009, 10:18 pm EST

Does this even constitute news? Like it or not Cobain is a rock icon. They put rock icons in these games so people can live out rock and roll fantasies. There is nothing insulting or demeaning about that.

jocko | 9/10/2009, 10:57 pm EST

totally disturbing! that’s demeaning to any artist, let alone a legend, Kurt Cobain! This video reminds me of what Metallica would look like playing the Doors.

hdbngr63 | 9/10/2009, 11:39 pm EST

They only reason there is even ANY controversy on this subject is Courtney Love’s need to be an attention whore. People are arguing that this is “disgracing” his image and his work, and mainly because he’s deceased. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Johnny Cash in this game as well? And Jimi Hendrix in “World Tour?” Both of them are deceased and had more talent and influence than Cobain ever had, yet there is no controversy over their avatars. Fuck Courtney Love, she’s a drug-addicted whore who constantly feels the need to be in the limelight.

Dashiki88 | 9/10/2009, 11:57 pm EST

I hate to say this, but it sounds like my dealings with many women as of late… crapping all over everything sacred then blaming me or someone else when it hits the fan

What was that Jack Nicholson line?
“I think of a man, then I strip away reason and accountability.”

Hammersmith77 | 9/11/2009, 12:28 am EST

Its really not fair to compare Courtney Love to Yoko Ono. Yoko inspired Lennon to wtite some of his greatest songs after the Beatles were over. She has also been classy with his memory after his death. Courtney Love was poisonous during Cobain’s life has been robbing his grave for years. The guy’s biggesr worry about his music was commercialization and this is what she does. Anybody that doesn’t understand why this is a travesty probably doesn’t understand Nirvana either.

chip love | 9/11/2009, 12:29 am EST

it’s cool they used Kurt. i’ll bet he’d even like it. BUT…the songs they chose are beyond stupid. he should be singing Nirvana songs or songs he was influenced by like the Melvins or even Alice in Chains. or better still something like the Cannanes or Daniel Johnston himself. Like “Rock’n'Roll EGA”. Beat Happening. something that Kurt would have been amused by…you know?

Matt | 9/11/2009, 12:29 am EST

Love was probably so doped up when she agreed to this whole thing she doesn’t even remember.

Blain | 9/11/2009, 12:31 am EST

People should relax and quit always trying to defend this mans honor by restricting the gift of his music. The man has been dead for 15 years which is probally longer than many of the people who play this game have been alive. Hows a kid supposed to find out about good music with grumpy old f@#ks try hoarding him for themselves. Too many people take Kurt way too seriously instead of just enjoying him

Blain | 9/11/2009, 12:33 am EST

If this upsets you you are getting old

ITS A GAME!!! | 9/11/2009, 12:47 am EST

did we really need a response from Grohl and Noveselic about this? It’s already bad enough Grohl has gone on to have a 15 year career based off of all the work Kurt did in Nirvana.

Bucketfoot | 9/11/2009, 12:52 am EST

No one will care about this game in 6 months (Activision are probably loving this publicity right now) and I doubt this will affect his legacy…whether you think he was a musical visionary or an over-rated druggy Kurt (and the media) have cemented his place in rock history forever – or at least until the internet runs out of memory and they have to start deleting some stuff ;)

Reality | 9/11/2009, 1:02 am EST

Everybody thinks they know what Kurt “stood for”. Why do douchebags continue to get idolized just because they die? If Kurt were alive today, he would probably “stand for” raising money for heroin–same as Courtney.

sdsdfdf | 9/11/2009, 1:22 am EST

Courtney is a loser a talentless dog and a leech but i got a feeling Kurt is laughing his ass off wherever he is at the moment..

Light pink | 9/11/2009, 1:30 am EST

Comparing Courtney to Yoko is actually being too nice. Do you see John Lennon rocking out to Bon Jovi in the Beatles Rock Band and going “YEEEAAHHH BOYYYYYYYY!!!!”? No, because even Yoko has enough sense not to trash his legacy like that. Then again, it helps that she’s not doped up on drugs like Courtney. And to the douches that are saying “Play a real instrument!”, you do realize it is JUST A GAME, and people play games TO HAVE FUN, not to be pompous a-holes who take themselves too seriously like you, and those who genuinely want to become musicians WILL pick up a real guitar, so no need to repeat what they already know.

John | 9/11/2009, 3:23 am EST

The funny thing about this whole thing is that Kurt Cobain would probably love this. He would have laughed his ass off about it. Anyone who knows what he was all about should realize this. He did not take himself too seriously and was NOT an ego maniac. If he were alive today I think he would be laughing his ass off at himself singing Bon Jovi, not worrying how it will affect his legacy.

Eddie Veddar | 9/11/2009, 4:50 am EST

She’s just pissed that people can use his avatar to play stupid, lame-ass “Rock” music….

Kurt Cobain head-banging to Bon Jovi?!?!? Fuckin’ joke! Courtney signed off on this…what did she expect?!?!? She’s a musical RETARD!!!!!!

Not sure what is worse, a) the fact that people are worked up over a video game. b) “Worship” someone that couldn’t handle life so they ended their’s, or c) people have such a crappy life that they idolize another person. Get out and do something with your own life so you can be happy rather then being happy about liking someone elses life.

richard hurtz | 9/11/2009, 8:45 am EST

dear darren,

you are a douche bag.

warhorse forever.

Jamie | 9/11/2009, 9:56 am EST

Look, this crap is getting old with these babies suckling on the decomposed teet of Kurt Cobain. If he didn’t want the music being commercialized, the dude would have never signed a major record deal, especially with a label that has signed such acts as Elton John and Ashlee Simpson. Get over it. Nobody complained about getting play a crappy song by a crappy band The Killers while playing as Tom Morello.

darren | 9/11/2009, 9:58 am EST

YEAH DOUCHE BAG OH SUCH AN OFFENSIVE WORD IM HURT…..
dear richard your a Paedophile

Rocksteadycity | 9/11/2009, 10:10 am EST

Activision has to give away their tired-looking Wolfgang Van Halen game if you buy this offensive treatment of Kurt Cobain.

yeah, that’ll work. Jeez, how stupid!

Here’s an idea: Get rid of Wolfgang, put Michael Anthony back in the Van Halen game, and treat Kurt Cobain with the respect he deserves. Doesn’t seem too hard to me.

Waif Me | 9/11/2009, 10:57 am EST

It’s clear Cobain had a sense of humor (see his reaction to Weird Al’s “Smells Like Nirvana” below)… but he probably would have been disgusted with his image used to sell anything. Fact is, these vicarious guitar hero type games are ONLY this popular BECAUSE fan-boys get to pretend to play like their idols… if you were playing as only made up characters, it wouldn’t be nearly as popular… furthermore, Courtney Love is an idiot, and she has found every opportunity to whore out Cobain’s image, likeness, and legacy to line her own pockets… Fuck guitar hero, how do you think Cobain would feel about being on a Dr. Marten’s advertisement or on a fucking lunchbox.

But who cares? He made his own decisions. He put himself in the limelight, just like any artist does… But it’s sad that since his death, his legacy is being trashed and cashed in.

But, hey, look at Cobain’s idols… Bowie (Celebrity Cruises), The Who (Toyota), The Stooges (Royal Caribbean), and the legacies of Marley, Elvis, Hendrix, etc., have made their habits more relevant than their art. I guess even for our most precious rawk gods, they ain’t above the bottom line: $$$

MTV: What about Weird Al’s “Smells Like Nirvana”?

Cobain: Oh, I laughed my butt off. I thought it was one of the funniest things I ever saw. He has some good people working for him. Those people really know how to… I mean, I’m sure he has a lot to do with it, but they really know how to reproduce things to the T. He had the exact same setup. It’s the same video with him in it. It’s great.

Delvin | 9/11/2009, 11:50 am EST

“i dragged my ass and never signed [off] on the avatar, let alone this fucking ‘feature’.” Great defense, Ms. Love.

Actually, I can believe half of it. I’m confident that Courtney did cooperate fully with Activision on the way Kurt’s avatar would look. (And I can certainly believe she dragged her ass, in some way or another.) But she may have just assumed that the avatar would be used only with Nirvana songs.

Still, we’ve seen this before from Ms. Love: no matter what happens with Nirvana, Hole, her record company, the way she brings up her daughter or anything else, it’s always somebody else’s fault. It’s getting old, Courtney.

Oh come on!!! | 9/11/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Are we having a laugh? Why are people getting so upset about a silly video game?. Am I missing something? When did rock n roll loose the humour? Kurt would have found it funny (Seasons in the Sun anyone?). Well done Courtney for winding people up if nothing else!!!

CSC | 9/11/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Nirvana gets all the credit for revolutionizing music, but other bands from that era (especially Alice in Chains) did most of the heavy lifting. Kurt Cobain’s greatest business decision was blowing his brains out.

Alf | 9/11/2009, 12:38 pm EST

No matter what they do Im so grossed out by having to see it once.

Francis Parker | 9/11/2009, 1:08 pm EST

I believe it went like this:
-Courtney signed the rights to Activision to use his likeness

-Activision took it a step further then she inteded by using him to sing fucking Bon Jovi

-She now feels embarrassed and is trying to backtrack, and I don’t blame her.

Being on the side of genuine culture rather then money-worship was one of the main themes of Nirvana – I know that’s a hard concept to grasp in America, but Kurt would’ve HATED this.

Jonah | 9/11/2009, 1:37 pm EST

“Rape me. Do it and do it again.”

That must be Courtney’s favorite lyric that Kurt wrote. She has probably always viewed it as an invitation to do any fucked up and disturbing thing she wants to him.

Nobody | 9/11/2009, 1:38 pm EST

The guy was a heavy heroin user who blasted his own brains out with a shotgun…why are we trying to preserve his image? He had no self respect. Looking foolish in a video game would be the least of his worries.

Oh, well whatever..nevermind. Peace.

Obviously Courtney Love is a nutjob, and people only love Kurt Cobain because he shot himself. He was a good musician, but its just a game. I don’t even like it, I just don’t care if he is in it or not. If he didn’t get so drunk and high all the time maybe he wouldn’t have killed himself.

KURT COBAIN FACTS! | 9/11/2009, 3:06 pm EST

This is another example of how the 90’s generation fails.

Kurt was a sell out from the begining, he acted in videos, change his image to look cooler, lip sync for the shoots and he shared the stage with Backstreet Boys in award shows.

If you don’t want to be a rock star just stop.

Just look at Eddie Vedder, Corgan, Cornell, they are doing every single thing they were against to, they wiped their asses with their so called “values” and ideas, even Dave Grohl became a POP star.

That’s why this generation don’t give a f*** about the 90’s music, cause this generation are more honest havin fun and playing with the amazing posibilities of succes, not against of that succes just to be hip and cool, just to have “street credit”.

It’s easy to become a hypocrite:

-Smashing Pumkins doing albums with Hanson.

-Pearl Jam doing videos and TV shows (in “tv studios”).

-Chris Cornell doing albums with Justin Timbarlake.

-Trent Reznor following Michael Jackson footsteps with a “This is it” tour juts to get some attention.

-Even Radiohead turned up on the Grammys juts to trash POP girl Miley Cyrus (If you don’t want to play the industry game, why bother?).

“90’s sucks, what’s wrong with havin a good time?”
-The Wrestler.

RazzTheKid | 9/11/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Courtney Love needs to learn how to fucking spell and compose sentences. It looks and sounds like Frances Bean wrote it instead of the 45 year old mother.

Dude, Kurt is probably having a laugh… he’s dead, it’s not like he cares anymore. But Courtney is the biggest whore in the face of the musical planet.
Peace.

“Even Radiohead turned up on the Grammys juts to trash POP girl Miley Cyrus (If you don’t want to play the industry game, why bother?).”

Uh, it was Miley who trashed Radiohead, by bitching about not being able to meet them backstage. They simply advised her to grow up.

Give it a f@#*ing rest. Cobain was a self centered prick that deemed any group he didn’t like unworthy. He represented a genre of music that got old quick and became stale real fast.

Actually the possibilities are endless…could we get him to duet with Axl Rose on “Stop Dragging My Heart Around?”…I mean Grohl does goofy shit like that now. Who is to say that if Kurt had lived he wouldn’t have developed a sense of humor and terrible musical sensibilities like everyone else from the 90’s???

Is there any better example of drugs rotting away the core of your brain than watching Courtney “I would sell my daughter into sex slavery for money and drugs” Love make choices and then blame the rest of the world? Very typical drug behavior. Even if her lawyers did it without her knowledge(which is not believeable for one second), she’d still be responsible because they are her lawyers. Sure Courtney, keep laying it at Grohl’s feet-your pettiness and jealousy are showing themselves with regard to Dave Grohl. See, Dave is demonstrating what it looks like to stay straight, write great songs, and be successful as an artist. Of course, since Kurt isn’t here and Billy Corgan is busy with The Pumpkins I guess you don’t have anyone to write songs for you that you can try to pass off as your own. Show some freaking respect with regard to Dave Grohl, for once. God knows he’s earned it.

Talk about taking what could be an amazing legacy and pissing all over it-you suck Courtney.

Jim | 9/11/2009, 7:23 pm EST

Courtney is a douche for selling him out. She “didn’t know”?! Bullshit. She knew before the fucking ink dried on the check. Nothing like dragging an icon through the mud for financial gain…

“-Smashing Pumkins doing albums with Hanson.”

Only James Iha did this, and he’s not even actually int he band anymore.

“-Pearl Jam doing videos and TV shows (in “tv studios”).”

I’ll give ya this one.

“-Chris Cornell doing albums with Justin Timbarlake.”

It was Timbaland, not JT. It was also a pile of shit.

“-Trent Reznor following Michael Jackson footsteps with a “This is it” tour juts to get some attention.”

For attention? Really? It’s a farewell tour for NIN. Does Reznor really need or want more attention? i don’t think so.

“-Even Radiohead turned up on the Grammys juts to trash POP girl Miley Cyrus (If you don’t want to play the industry game, why bother?).”

Other way around. Radiohead was actually performing at the Grammys. Miley tried to talk to them but they said no.

raisedlefteyebrow | 9/11/2009, 10:27 pm EST

This is another example of how the 90’s generation fails.

Kurt was a sell out from the begining, he acted in videos, change his image to look cooler, lip sync for the shoots and he shared the stage with Backstreet Boys in award shows.

————————-

WTF?!?! Every time there’s a Nirvana article you come out and post this same shit over and over again. You head hasn’t moved any further out of your ass than the last time I read your garbage. Kurt Cobain shared the stage with the Backstreet Boys? What are you smoking? James Iha formerly OF the Smashing Pumpkins is a member of Tinted Windows which includes ONE member of Hanson. No one gives a fuck about Cornell so I’ll move on. It was Miley Cyrus who whined about not meeting Radiohead.

And as for this generation not caring about 90s music… are you serious? Alternative rock is everywhere. Granted, it sucks now and is nowhere as near as good as it used to be, but the influence of the 90s is still reflected in record sales and the radio. Plus indie and electronica artists of the 90s influenced many of the indie bands that came out this decade. So, as usual, you’re full of shit.

So go listen to your cock rock and leave the intelligent dicussion to people who know what they’re talking about.

The this-is-just-a-game-and-Kurt-w ould-have-loved-the-irony-behi nd-it-all argument is lame. No one will ever know. Right?

Activision should stick to securing rights with artists that are ALIVE. Because sometimes, estates can be greedy and self-serving. Same comment applies for the Johnny Cash likeness on GH.

Anonymous | 9/12/2009, 12:37 pm EST

that is worse than pissing on the guy’s grave. Activision is to blame here; they can’t rely on Courtney Love to provide guidance on how to put their game together in a respectful way.

It’s very unsettling to watch Cobain sing glam rock – that’s what he saved us from!

Of the 3 Nirvana members, Only Kurt is in this video game cause Courtney owns everything about Kurt`s image and likeness, which is a form of hell in itself.Since the last Hole CD,Celebrity Skin, came out in 1998, Courtney has only been able to produce one CD over these past 11 years, and it flopped. Cashing in on her diceased husband in every way, shape & form is her only job these days. What`s really eye opening is how these millions she`s raking in are all disappearing just as quickly as she gets it.She always says she`s broke.I wish the IRS would investigate her.

what you all fail to realize.. | 9/13/2009, 8:41 pm EST

unfortunely in the real world almost all musicians have to sell out at one point or another.

being a musician i know how hard it is to tour, play shows, and make a few bucks.

to make rockstar money u gotta sign on the bottom line and depending on ur lawyer u either get totally f*cked or partially f*cked by ur record deal.

many artists have had to do things they never would have expected to just to make ends meet, including selling products with their music.

so if any of you 80’s losers wanna trash talk 90’s values as empty pandering, realize that you too work for a living and i’d be willing to bet ur job isn’t 100% inline with ur ideals…but everybodies gotta eat right?

Rock | 9/13/2009, 8:44 pm EST

snaxalotl | 9/13/2009, 9:47 pm EST

(a) nirvana is JUST A BAND

(b) Kurt was JUST AN AVERAGE SINGER. if Bono had died young, he would probably be a tragic figure of mythic jesus proportions. if jesus hadn’t died young, he would have probably become an obscure religious figure

(c) Courtney is really kind of sweet but, sadly, really really crazy. like many people with her sort of totally messed up, when she hears herself saying things that stop people thinking things that she finds troubling, she doesn’t have much idea whether what she is saying is rooted in fact

Respect Cobain. | 9/13/2009, 10:36 pm EST

People bitching about Cobain and the 90s saying that now everything is way cooler make me LOL.

Like it or not Cobain is a legend like Morrison and other “deadtoosoon” rockstars, and these days there aren’t musicians with the talents of the 90s best bands.

And we’ll never know if Cobain would have sold out. I doubt it, but speculating is just plain stupid.

And the guy that made a list of why the 90s suck has no f***ing idea about anything he talks about. LOL.

theorangebox | 9/13/2009, 10:54 pm EST

Puhleese.

bennie new york | 9/14/2009, 1:23 am EST

Go ahead and diss Kurt Cobain, but it really only proves that you know nothing about real music. Kurt was a genius, and that should be the end of it, but since the idiots rule here I’m gonna have to state my case. As a lyricist, Kurt was as smart as anyone. He had an absolute gift in writing lyrics that seemed simple and oblique but held a deeper meaning. At the same time, he could be very clear in his writing and just say what needed to be said. As a vocalist, Kurt pushed all of his lyrics over the top with his stellar gift for emotional interpretation. As a guitarist, Kurt changed the paradigm for playing guitar. He didn’t have a great technicality with the guitar, but he made up for it with his creativity and ambition, and his work with alternative tunings was groundbreaking. And finally, as a songwriter, Kurt Cobain could write a great hook. Kurt was influenced by the Beatles as much the Sex Pistols, and though he wasn’t fond of the mainstream, he had a knack for pop. On top of that Kurt wrote hundreds of songs, a good portion of them very good, and he did more with loud-soft dynamics than anyone. For those of you who think this guy is overrated, you have not heard enough of his work. Or you have no idea what you are talking about.

Paul | 9/14/2009, 2:00 am EST

Even if guitar hero sucks, it’s awesome that they expose the younger generation to Nirvana. However, to whore out Kurt Cobain’s likeness and make a mockery of his legacy is absolutely fucking disappointing.

Courtney Love is a giant douche bag for agreeing to this, and Activision is just as big of a douche. It doesn’t take a genius to anticipate Nirvana fans’ reaction to this attrocity.

By the way, the 90’s kicked ass. There may have been a different vibe, but it was appropriate for the times.

Fuck the Wrestler.

brownie-p | 9/14/2009, 2:21 am EST

Typical! Some people are taking this so seriously. Its a real waste of time for people to be bitching about other people’s business, so if you have something to say, take it higher, don’t wine about it at the end of a Rollingstone article! If everyone is so inclined to get mad about “The Cobaine Issue” they might as well sue Guitar Hero World Tour for using only Ozzy Osbournes image and not his own voice to cover other bands songs. Only then will it be a karaeoke. Whatever controversy sparks from not getting a bands approval to play their songs is between Courtney and Grohl etc…Listen, don’t get caught up in their drama. Its a double standard anways. Ozzy can cover other people’s songs and nobody complains, but when its someone from our own country, people complain.

Regardless of whether or not you liked Cobain or his music, every person deserves to rest in peace. You have to remember that he has family, a daughter, and none of them deserve to have their memories of their loved one perverted in this way.

Whether or not Activision was able to secure the rights to use the avatar this way, they ought to have some sort of moral compass that would tell them this wasn’t the right thing to do. But of course we’re talking about a corporation – they have no moral compass, and whatever makes them the most $ is what they will do.

Shameful. For Love, and for Activision.

what? | 9/14/2009, 9:06 am EST

Who cares? Do people freak out everytime they see a pantomime of Elvis or any other dead musician / actor? It’s an avatar. In a game. About music. Cobain isn’t the first dead person to be exploited and certainly won’t be the last.

Regardless, Courtnely Love has a lot of room to talk…is she planning on returning the checks she received from Activision in protest?

Class of '93 | 9/14/2009, 10:01 am EST

OK this crap has got me rolling around laughing. I grew up through the 80’s and 90’s. And there was a lot of good stuff that came out of the musical pipeline of both generations. I remember when Nirvana was becoming popular, and you had all these dorks claiming to be “non-trendy” wearing shit from thriftstores, beat up converse sneakers, & their dads favorite flannel shirt to make an anti-fashion statement. Yet they were following the Kurt Cobain trend.YAY.

Nirvana was on the radio back then, so the “non-trendy” shit didn’t last too long. I don’t think that Nirvana was this huge golden idol that should be bowed down to 3 times a day. Dude was a little ahead of his time, but the dumbfuck blew his head off. Since that was what he did want, (obviously or he wouldn’t have done it right?) I think they should make an animation you can unlock of him running back stage and grabbing the mossberg coming back out onstage and doing the deed infront of the crowd with pyrotechnics shooting off as as his eyeballs come flying out to the camera like something out of SMASH TV and then have the headless corpse run around stage holding up his index fingers and pinkies Beavis and Butthead style. Now THAT would sell!! Piss on the “hardcore fans” who still cry everytime they hear his voice or see an animated version of him singing Bon Jovi. I am sure these same “Hardcore fans” were not crying when their retarded looking avatars were singing his songs. Gee, thats not trendy though is it??*rolls eyes* Here’s to Activision making more moves like this since this was not the first dead person to be made to sing other bands songs in the game. People on here are always like “Oh Poor kurt they made him look like an idiot” Uhhh….NEWS FLASH…Kurt Cobain made himself look like an idiot when he pulled the trigger. So to all the hardcore junkies that are trying to preserve a golden image on a pile of shit….YOU FAIL. Bon Jovi has more talent in his pinkie nail than Kurt Cobain had in his whole trigger finger. And they were both whiners/screamers so it fits the bill perfectly.

I love how people haven’t even heard half of Nirvana’s songs feel entitled to shit on them for no good reason. It’s the most pretentious thing in the world. Kurt Cobain sucks? Really? Which of his songs didn’t stand out for you lyrically or musically? Why? Or is Smells Like Teen Spirit the only song you’ve heard by them? Have you listened to anything that wasn’t on Nevermind? Anyone can criticize a band. It takes balls to defend your position with actual fucking reasons.

Class of 93,

Julie | 9/14/2009, 5:53 pm EST

As a fan of Kurt I can see where it would be fun to be able to play the whole game as him, but I can also see how it’s degrading to his image. I have to agree with Dave and Krist. I think the Kurt avatar should only be used to play Nirvana songs. Used in that way it’s a great way for younger kids to get to know Kurt and Nirvana’s music.

Anonymous | 9/14/2009, 9:45 pm EST

class of 93′, you are wrong.

Bon Jovi is a talentless hack who makes music of no worth whatsoever.

While there was a lot of stupid shit in the grunge scene, on many (many, not all) of kurt’s songs there is something that is of value to be remembered.

Don’t feel too terribly sorry (for him). At least he’s wanted.

Peart | 9/21/2009, 5:29 am EST

Its the same with every real person they use. Like Ozzy in world tour, if he was the singer on a song not his he dances around. Its actually quite insulting. Least with Ozzy he is alive and they can tell him this will happen, Cash and Cobain not so

Birdman | 9/24/2009, 8:43 pm EST

As an obsessive Nirvana fan, I have to admit I felt like pissing myself laughing at this. And I’m sure that’s what Kurt would have done.

Come on people. Everyone likes to think of him as this mopey whiner, but they forget that he had a wicked sense of irony as anyone who knew him can attest. I didn’t, but I know Chad Channing (drummer on Bleach) and he told me this about Kurt himself.

I’m sure he’s up in the big room in the sky playing the game right now, and probably belting out the Bon Jovi.

And on the whole 80s/90s debate – no one’s right or wrong. The music from both periods reflects the reality of the times. The 80s was a period where America and the world experienced mass economic success, there was no real war (well, not counting the Cold War) – people were happy and turned to feelgood music in the process.
In the early 90s, however, you had an economic downturn, the Gulf War, the first environmental doomsayers, basically people were getting more depressed about their lives and futures. So they turned to darker music.

Both eras represent their own reality. I personally hate 80s music and love most early 90s stuff because it, to me, represents my reality in the world I live in today which most modern music doesn’t.

.... | 10/4/2009, 5:22 pm EST

That was not right…I mean who finds this cool? It’s just strange.

Anonymous | 10/17/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Okay to the people who think that Kurt Cobain would have found this funny, shut the fuck up. That’s just stupid. Kurt wanted nothing to do with shit like this and at the very least he would be annoyed by it. As for Courtney, I apologize to Kurt if he really did love her but she really is just awful. I bet she uses his ashes as fucking cat litter.

Kurt Cobain | 10/21/2009, 9:47 am EST

Jethro | 11/5/2009, 12:16 am EST

Don’t by the game. Hit Activision where it hurts.

OK. Huh? | 11/7/2009, 2:29 pm EST

Ok, this entire page makes me want to blow MY brains out. I love Nirvana’s music, sure. I’ve even read biographies on Kurt Cobain, I find him interesting but he was depressed from a fucked up family in my view. But I don’t know, I could be completely wrong, I mean none of us KNEW Kurt Cobain (to my knowlegde), so who are any of us to say how he would feel? As far as I’m concerned, the legalities behind our entertainment is only our business if an endangerment is presented. Nobody’s opinion is necessarily wrong, but seriously, why is everyone so defensive? And I don’t mean about the video game only, I mean everybody’s defensive of everything mentioned at all. For Christ’s sake, if you don’t like Kurt Cobain, it’s ok, you don’t have to continously defend yourself and insult the dead (like “darren”…dude, I’m going to point out that Kurt Cobain is not six feet under, he was cremated, and douche bag is two words, not one). Also, you don’t need to become a ballistic animal in his defense. If people don’t like him and/or his music, be respectful in stating so. I mean, if you get a laugh out of it, you get a laugh out of it. I don’t care because I have been known for some fucked up humor and I’m sure I’ve laughed at worse. If people adore him, please, stop acting like you knew him. If you like his music, that’s all that matters, don’t waste minutes defending your interests. At the end of the day, everybody will think what they believe. I mean let’s face it, video games are made for fun and rock music was made for expression, but let’s face it, has become a joke on some levels. Let’s face it, if you’re not laughing, you’re crying. So for the sake my pet aardvark, people who like/dislike Nirvana and their music, people who like/dislike Kurt Cobain, people who like/HATE Courtney Love, and people who wrote stuff on this page that I have no idea what their talking about: shut up and get a life.

I can’t believe I just wasted five minutes of my life writing this…and continuing it by this end note…
