What a wacky choice.

I think Ellen is a great addition to the show. I think she’ll bring something to the table that had previously been missing. She may not be in the music industry, but neither is the general public who is voting…I think she’ll be more representative of “us”.

I think she’ll make a good replacement for Paula. If they didn’t have someone up there with heart who would encourage the contestants who would benefit from more training, etc. There are already 3 music industry judges. There is no reason to have four.

Another judge that will have nothing of value to contribute.

Of course, if you need someone to evaluate musical talent you would hire a comedian. I’m going in for surgery next week, know any good mechanics?

The show about finding the next great American talent. I’m not a music industry executive, but I am capable of hearing and I know what I like to listen to. I think there definitely should be a non-music industry judge, this will give a whole new perspective.

Yet another reason for me to not take American Idol, its panel, concept and contestants, seriously.

American Idol is nothing but a reality show with psycho people making fools of themselves in front of millions of people. and the ones that win go on to record shitty music that most of the time they don’t even write themselves.

Umm if anyone thought for a minute that the words spilling out of Paula Abdul’s mouth were relevant or rooted in any concept/understanding of true musical talent, you’ve been hitting the crazy pills and Botox as much as Paula. Ellen ‘10!

Wow I’m stunned! I didn’t even think of Ellen as a replacement but I actually think it makes sense! I mean she’s a regular person and a regular viewer so she knows what they want to see and she’s funny and has a huge fanbase. She’s like a breath of fresh air and people will be very curious to watch and see.

I like it! I think its about time that they put someone on the panel that isnt in the music industry. People need to realize that its more than just about the exec who think they know what people want to hear, its about the consumners and fans. They are the ones who decide what is good and what they want to hear. Personally I think Michael Slezak from Entertainment Weekly would have been a really good choice.

Well if Perez Hilton can have his own record label, then why shouldn’t Ellen DeGeneres be an AI judge? At least she’s a trillion times more qualified to judge music than Perez. Hell, ANYONE is a trillion times more qualified to judge music than Perez. There’s no such thing as standards nowadays.:(

It’s also worth noting that the record execs who sign artists/bands have no musical talent in their own right most of the time. The people that are running record labels have even less of a clue than the AI judges about what constitutes talent. You can clearly tell just by looking at who’s currently dominating the Billboard charts. And the slumping record sales still doesn’t make them get a clue.

There should only be 2 judges—-Simon and Ellen would be great together. Too many judges over analyze everything. What an entertaining show it would be. Go Simon and Ellen.

Good move for attracting more eyeballs. The show will be a lot funnier for this.

My point being i’m willing to bet that they actually think she will bring them a lot of $ and that is the bottom line in their world.

As for the comments wacking AI, do your really think current popular artists (with a few exceptions) outside of Idol are really that much better? At least many of the finalists can sing, many write and have tried to break in the music business that holds Miley Cyrus as it’s goddess. They are also put through the grinder, scrutinized by the public and have to earn longevity like all the rest. The ones that are eh, thankfully, fade away. Musical talent where ever it is discovered should be accepted without prejudice.

Ellen Degeneres had a mom who was distant, an enigma. Their home–no dad/husband–was like an orphanage.
Artists and media types like her tend to be (at least closet) egomaniacs. But she is, like Abdul–they both can dance–cute.

Now, regarding the show, AI, Titanics don’t always sink in a hurry. Especially if TV Land is lost, apathetic

The show was losing steam each year. If it wasn’t for Adam Lambert last year it would have been a snoozefest. AI is desperate to bring some pulse to the show by replacing Paula with popular funny girl. Ellen may bring some entertaining value, but the show will lose more credibility. I think It’ll hurt the contestants.

I think its a good choice. I mean, I’m curious on what would her chemistry with Simon be and Ellen has a great humor, true that she has no music background but she can spot some potential artists.

I have to say first off, I’m glad to see Paula go. She couldn’t talk her way out of a paper bag, and to have to be on live TV, she was probably tired of looking like an idiot. The show will go on, as long as Simon is there. When he decides to leave, so will the legacy of AI, I believe. As little as I like Ellen, she will be better than Paula, and I too, would like to see how her chemistry with Simon goes, should be more entertaining than watching Paula flirt and throw herself at him all the time.

Every year the show gets less interesting. If it wasn’t for Adam, there would have been a major problem.

i like ellen shes funny, but come on, this just shows that american idol wasnt never really about a serious singing competition. why would you put a comedian in a singing show ?! come on ! i knew this show was kind of a joke since kris allen won, and not adam lambert who had the best voice by miles. im not saying kris is bad, but adam was amazing !!! makes me wonder that the votes are fix, which i think they are, so this season im just gonna watch for the fun of it, but im NOT gonna vote.

They lost me with this decision. I barely made it through last season…not even going to bother this one. After watching “So you think you can dance”, I realized that there are way more talented people out there than they have appear on American Idol anyway.

I saw Ellen judging on SYTYCD. I think she was awed by the dancers and the dancing so much that her assessments were all positive with no real technical criticism, but she did throw in a few funny lines. I’m sure we can expect the same on Idol.

Some of these posters are hilarious. This show has always, and always will SUCK. You could have Ronald Mcdonald on the panel. The banter coming from the judges is scripted anyway. This show is not even as relevant as a flea fart.

IDOL has been a favorite of family my from inception. We will no longer be watching or buying tickets to their concerts. Ellen has no place on the panel, and if that is the joke Fox execs are playing on the public, the joke will be on them when their profits plummet!!! but seriously guys, Ellen may be one kind on her own show but AI has other people as well so she may be not her usual self. In a sense that she may mellow down a bit.

Ellen won’t be a good judge as she has no musical talent and she’s only about outer beauty as per she says in her Cover Girl commercials. I know of a lot of people that had a problem watching last season and I know they won’t be watching the next season. American Idol has gone to the dogs and It would take a miracle to bring it back to life again.

It’s just scandal. Ellen has enough connections everywhere. Ii would be nice see her as judge in Olympic Games. Why not? She’s funny. For so many people it’s perfect professionalism replacement.I think it will be her next level.

I think all these comments are just ludicrous. I am a huge AI fan, but I was never a really huge fan of Paula’s. I like Ellen, and think it will be interesting to see what she will bring to the show. I have watched every single season. True some were not as good as others, but I think as a fan I will give her a chance. And if she fails, I’ll still watch it, because it’s not the judges that keep me watching, it’s the contestants. Some are train wrecks and some are worthy of actually being there. So just keep an open mind, you just be pleasantly surprised, and if you no longer want to watch that is your perogative. It will still go on whether you choose to watch it or not.
