Ellen DeGeneres Named New “American Idol” Judge

American Idol recruited fill-in judges like Mary J. Blige and Victoria Beckham while searching for a full-time replacement for Paula Abdul, but late yesterday the top-rated show revealed who would be joining the judges table when the series’ ninth season premieres in January 2010: Comedienne and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen made the surprising announcement on her talk show, saying that talks with AI producers had been ongoing for the past few weeks and the deal was finally worked out just before filming yesterday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Idols on the road: check out backstage photos of Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and more.

“I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol,” said DeGeneres said in a statement that confirmed her new gig. “I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.” Added AI creator and executive producer Simon Fuller, “Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can’t wait for this next season to begin.” DeGeneres got her first taste of judging during a one-episode stint on last season’s So You Think You Can Dance.

Critics will likely lash out at DeGeneres’ lack of music industry knowledge — she’s an avowed music fanatic, but doesn’t have the choreography background or recording experience that Abdul brought to the show. However, in casting DeGeneres, Idol has found another kind-hearted, nurturing personality. Plus, DeGeneres brings an accessible sense of humor to the show that’s different than the brand of comedy Abdul provided, which came most often at her expense. Fourth judge Kara DioGuardi isn’t a performer, but as an accomplished songwriter, she’ll likely step up as the pop music vet.

Look back at the finale of American Idol’s Season Eight.

In addition to welcoming DeGeneres to the judge’s table, Idol also revealed the full roster of stars who will guest judge during the show’s auditions: Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain. DeGeneres won’t join Cowell, Jackson and DioGuardi until the post-audition episodes of the show.

DeGeneres’ addition to the show also puts a final end to Paula Abdul’s tenure on American Idol. After Abdul revealed she was leaving the show, reports still circulated that she wanted to return to Idol was using her departure to leverage for a bigger paycheck more on par with her co-stars. Whether Abdul was still negotiating with Idol producers is unclear, but in the end, the Age of Abdul on Idol is over, and the Ellen Era has begun.

What a wacky choice.

TXDucky | 9/10/2009, 9:15 am EST

I think Ellen is a great addition to the show. I think she’ll bring something to the table that had previously been missing. She may not be in the music industry, but neither is the general public who is voting…I think she’ll be more representative of “us”.

JME | 9/10/2009, 9:29 am EST

I think she’ll make a good replacement for Paula. If they didn’t have someone up there with heart who would encourage the contestants who would benefit from more training, etc. There are already 3 music industry judges. There is no reason to have four.

Jeff | 9/10/2009, 9:52 am EST

Another judge that will have nothing of value to contribute.

Radio Zero | 9/10/2009, 10:18 am EST

Of course, if you need someone to evaluate musical talent you would hire a comedian. I’m going in for surgery next week, know any good mechanics?

AI Fan | 9/10/2009, 10:36 am EST

The show about finding the next great American talent. I’m not a music industry executive, but I am capable of hearing and I know what I like to listen to. I think there definitely should be a non-music industry judge, this will give a whole new perspective.

Mike | 9/10/2009, 10:41 am EST

Yet another reason for me to not take American Idol, its panel, concept and contestants, seriously.

Joe | 9/10/2009, 10:55 am EST

This is like Dennis Miller joining Monday Night Football.

Vic De Zen | 9/10/2009, 11:30 am EST

I never really took the judging seriously anyway. It was strictly a form of entertainment. And Ellen is entertaining. She was hilarious on her guest spot on So you Think you can Dance. I think she will fit in fine. Was never a huge fan of Paula Abdul anyway.

East Coast Bias | 9/10/2009, 11:31 am EST

And this should signal the end of Idol’s relevancy. Ellen has no music industry knowledge and her brand of humor does not have mass appeal. Idol has replaced an entertainment industry legend with a comic with no music knowledge…

RazzTheKid | 9/10/2009, 11:45 am EST

you don’t need any musical background to judge on this show..
American Idol is nothing but a reality show with psycho people making fools of themselves in front of millions of people. and the ones that win go on to record shitty music that most of the time they don’t even write themselves.
GO ELLEN!

Bob | 9/10/2009, 12:18 pm EST

They just lost me as a viewer.

Paula is so unique! | 9/10/2009, 12:20 pm EST

Umm if anyone thought for a minute that the words spilling out of Paula Abdul’s mouth were relevant or rooted in any concept/understanding of true musical talent, you’ve been hitting the crazy pills and Botox as much as Paula. Ellen ‘10!

Joy | 9/10/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Wow I’m stunned! I didn’t even think of Ellen as a replacement but I actually think it makes sense! I mean she’s a regular person and a regular viewer so she knows what they want to see and she’s funny and has a huge fanbase. She’s like a breath of fresh air and people will be very curious to watch and see.

Anonymous | 9/10/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Ellen has lots of singing experience herself…

Just keep swimming… just keep swimming… just keep swimming!

You know, I’m joking, but in all seriousness, that little Nemo ditty is at least 10 times catchier than anything released by an American Idol finalist!

Iowa Fan | 9/10/2009, 12:50 pm EST

I’m an Ellen fan, but let’s be honest here…the shark has been jumped, yo.

Anonymous | 9/10/2009, 1:29 pm EST

The shark was jumped with the introduction of Kara DioGuardi…

The Fonz is doing backflips now.

Pslightly Psycho | 9/10/2009, 1:55 pm EST

Ellen will bring much needed comic relief to a show on life support. Great choice. Only problem is she has no musical background, unlike the other judges. Then again, neither did Paula…

Peter S. | 9/10/2009, 1:55 pm EST

Great Pick! She’s Funny! That’s the best part! And she will see things from a non-singer’s perspective. I just might start watching the show again!

Peter S. | 9/10/2009, 2:00 pm EST

“And this should signal the end of Idol’s relevancy. Ellen has no music industry knowledge and her brand of humor does not have mass appeal. Idol has replaced an entertainment industry legend with a comic with no music knowledge…”

Paula Abdul? “entertainment industry legend”? … you smokin’ crack?

Catlin | 9/10/2009, 2:01 pm EST

I like it! I think its about time that they put someone on the panel that isnt in the music industry. People need to realize that its more than just about the exec who think they know what people want to hear, its about the consumners and fans. They are the ones who decide what is good and what they want to hear. Personally I think Michael Slezak from Entertainment Weekly would have been a really good choice.

Myrna | 9/10/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Please, please tell me that replacing Paula with Ellen is a joke!!

WOW... TERRIBLE | 9/10/2009, 2:18 pm EST

I am done watching this show. Ellen is the most annoying person on TV.

WTF does she know about music? Paula may have been wasted but she’s a professional singer. Ellen is an occasionally funny TV host who is most famous for her preference in bedfellows.

terrible

Hmmm | 9/10/2009, 2:19 pm EST

What next, will they replace Randy with Jerry Seinfeld?

nine lives | 9/10/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Well if Perez Hilton can have his own record label, then why shouldn’t Ellen DeGeneres be an AI judge? At least she’s a trillion times more qualified to judge music than Perez. Hell, ANYONE is a trillion times more qualified to judge music than Perez. There’s no such thing as standards nowadays.:(

nine lives | 9/10/2009, 2:58 pm EST

It’s also worth noting that the record execs who sign artists/bands have no musical talent in their own right most of the time. The people that are running record labels have even less of a clue than the AI judges about what constitutes talent. You can clearly tell just by looking at who’s currently dominating the Billboard charts. And the slumping record sales still doesn’t make them get a clue.

Rose | 9/10/2009, 3:55 pm EST

There should only be 2 judges—-Simon and Ellen would be great together. Too many judges over analyze everything. What an entertaining show it would be. Go Simon and Ellen.

Mike Klander | 9/10/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Good move for attracting more eyeballs. The show will be a lot funnier for this.

kill yr idols | 9/10/2009, 3:59 pm EST

“Critics will likely lash out at DeGeneres’ lack of music industry knowledge”

That’s ok. No one who has anything to do with idol knows anything about decent music anyways.

Moonlight Mile | 9/10/2009, 4:04 pm EST

4 judges is too many to begin with. Now you’re adding a professional talker? Can’t say I’m stoked about this. Glad they canned Paula. Wish they’d have stayed at 3.

MaxVeritas | 9/10/2009, 4:33 pm EST

The truth is, Ellen has NO known musical background, talent or ability but then it seems obvious the shows producers could care less about her impoverished qualifications relative to music. My point being i’m willing to bet that they actually think she will bring them a lot of $ and that is the bottom line in their world.
Will be sure to tune out from now on as I find her so-called brand of comedy tediously boring, (like her hair style) unsuitable for framing and geared towards the small minded types who are quite easily yukked.
PS-I hope this attempt to foist a musically illiterate judge on the Idol viewers fails quickly. Let her go back to her own boorish mini-crowd.

chuck | 9/10/2009, 5:32 pm EST

this doesnt even matter
the show is going downhill.

Josh | 9/10/2009, 5:36 pm EST

It IS like Dennis Miller joining Monday Night Football! I for one, think it’s great. Although, if they wanted warm, fuzzy and quirky WITH solid music creds, they should have picked Cyndi Lauper.

As for the comments wacking AI, do your really think current popular artists (with a few exceptions) outside of Idol are really that much better? At least many of the finalists can sing, many write and have tried to break in the music business that holds Miley Cyrus as it’s goddess. They are also put through the grinder, scrutinized by the public and have to earn longevity like all the rest. The ones that are eh, thankfully, fade away. Musical talent where ever it is discovered should be accepted without prejudice.

dlt | 9/10/2009, 7:26 pm EST

Ellen Degeneres had a mom who was distant, an enigma. Their home–no dad/husband–was like an orphanage.
Artists and media types like her tend to be (at least closet) egomaniacs. But she is, like Abdul–they both can dance–cute.

Now, regarding the show, AI, Titanics don’t always sink in a hurry. Especially if TV Land is lost, apathetic

Anonymous | 9/10/2009, 8:46 pm EST

The show was losing steam each year. If it wasn’t for Adam Lambert last year it would have been a snoozefest. AI is desperate to bring some pulse to the show by replacing Paula with popular funny girl. Ellen may bring some entertaining value, but the show will lose more credibility. I think It’ll hurt the contestants.

pawns | 9/10/2009, 9:19 pm EST

all u clowns that watch this reality based shit really crack me up.
im glad they added ellen it just make the whole mess even more pathetic. go watch the wannabes. ill stick to the real musicians.

Chestnut | 9/10/2009, 9:38 pm EST

wtf

ForReal? | 9/10/2009, 10:52 pm EST

ROFLMAO

Typical of trying to bring in the loones.

Helen | 9/11/2009, 12:35 am EST

They just lost me as a viewer!!

meh | 9/11/2009, 5:41 am EST

I think its a good choice. I mean, I’m curious on what would her chemistry with Simon be and Ellen has a great humor, true that she has no music background but she can spot some potential artists.

whatever | 9/11/2009, 7:26 am EST

I have to say first off, I’m glad to see Paula go. She couldn’t talk her way out of a paper bag, and to have to be on live TV, she was probably tired of looking like an idiot. The show will go on, as long as Simon is there. When he decides to leave, so will the legacy of AI, I believe. As little as I like Ellen, she will be better than Paula, and I too, would like to see how her chemistry with Simon goes, should be more entertaining than watching Paula flirt and throw herself at him all the time.

Tresana | 9/11/2009, 9:47 am EST

I agree with you, Anonymous.
Every year the show gets less interesting. If it wasn’t for Adam, there would have been a major problem.

I love Ellen. I think she’s a great person. Real sweet. I’m not quite sure what to make of this development. . .i want to give her a chance and reserve my judgement for after I’ve seen her in action.

MaxVeritas | 9/11/2009, 10:37 am EST

The truth is, Ellen has NO known musical background, talent or ability but then it seems painfully obvious the shows producers could care less about her impoverished qualifications relative to music. My point being i’m willing to bet that they actually think she will bring them a lot of $ and that is the bottom line in their world.
Will be sure to tune out from now on as I find her so-called brand of comedy tediously boring & unsuitable for adults since it’s geared towards the small minded types who are quite easily yukked.
PS-I hope this attempt to foist a musically illiterate judge on the Idol viewers fails quickly. How bout we simply let her take her man up haircut & thieving attitude of stealing free airtime of over 1000 copyrighted songs for use on her show since it’s inception and just go back to her own boorish mini-crowd of human lemmings.

idol'd out | 9/11/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Why don’t they just replace the entire panel with Ellen, Rosie, Perez and Wierd Al. That would bring some credibility to the show!!! we could call it the Gong Show.

John | 9/11/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Paula needs rehab. when your big paycheck can’t buy your anually fix you have problems. Finally a Judge who will take the show to hell! Thanks Ellen. Your lack of funniness and flamboyant gayness will surely end that horrible show. No more butchered classics. Leave it to an annoying lesbian to be the final nail in the coffin that should have been thrown in the ground years ago.

Rob | 9/11/2009, 1:50 pm EST

I still ain’t watchin’ the fuckin’ show. I agree with pawns I’ll stick with the real musicians…who actually perform their OWN songs.

swf | 9/11/2009, 3:59 pm EST

I am excited for the new season.

GO ELLEN

I LOVE YOUR MORNING SHOW
AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO AMERICAN IDOL AGAIN. WHOEVER THAT WACKY KARA DIOGAURDI CAN GO, SHE SHOULD HAVE NEVER STAYED LAST YEAR. THE 3 RANDY ELLEN AND SIMON WOULD MAKE THIS SHOW $$$$$$$$. BYE KARA HELLO ELLEN!

TA | 9/11/2009, 4:04 pm EST

I AGREE WITH SWF, SEE YA KARA!
ELLEN IS A GREAT CHOICE AI!TAKE OUT KARA JUST MAKE IT THE 3 RANDY, ELLEN & SIMON AWESOME SHOW. BIG $$
THIS CHOICE WILL BRING ME BACK TO WATCHING THIS YEAR.
GOOD LUCK ELLEN…

omg | 9/11/2009, 4:18 pm EST

i like ellen shes funny, but come on, this just shows that american idol wasnt never really about a serious singing competition. why would you put a comedian in a singing show ?! come on ! i knew this show was kind of a joke since kris allen won, and not adam lambert who had the best voice by miles. im not saying kris is bad, but adam was amazing !!! makes me wonder that the votes are fix, which i think they are, so this season im just gonna watch for the fun of it, but im NOT gonna vote.

Gizmo | 9/11/2009, 11:21 pm EST

You got to be kidding!
I’m done with that show now!

Bobon | 9/12/2009, 9:15 am EST

They lost me with this decision. I barely made it through last season…not even going to bother this one. After watching “So you think you can dance”, I realized that there are way more talented people out there than they have appear on American Idol anyway.

Rocketman | 9/12/2009, 2:36 pm EST

I saw Ellen judging on SYTYCD. I think she was awed by the dancers and the dancing so much that her assessments were all positive with no real technical criticism, but she did throw in a few funny lines. I’m sure we can expect the same on Idol.

Gwerb | 9/12/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Some of these posters are hilarious. This show has always, and always will SUCK. You could have Ronald Mcdonald on the panel. The banter coming from the judges is scripted anyway. This show is not even as relevant as a flea fart.

Benny | 9/13/2009, 3:46 am EST

IDOL has been a favorite of family my from inception. We will no longer be watching or buying tickets to their concerts. Ellen has no place on the panel, and if that is the joke Fox execs are playing on the public, the joke will be on them when their profits plummet!!! We are done with them, any their are many more like me out their. Good luck, and good night Idol!

Benny | 9/13/2009, 3:46 am EST

This show is a steaming hot doo-doo and always was.

PSS- The only thing funny about her is her David Cook hair style, AI won’t be laughing either when the reality of this less than poor level choice for Paulas replacement takes effect. PSSS-5 year contract, lol, it won’t be around that long, trust me.

Anonymous | 9/15/2009, 11:59 am EST

wherever ellen goes,money follows.
this seasons gonna be a breakthrough…
but seriously guys, Ellen may be one kind on her own show but AI has other people as well so she may be not her usual self. In a sense that she may mellow down a bit.

CHUCK | 9/15/2009, 4:16 pm EST

Ellen won’t be a good judge as she has no musical talent and she’s only about outer beauty as per she says in her Cover Girl commercials. I know of a lot of people that had a problem watching last season and I know they won’t be watching the next season. American Idol has gone to the dogs and It would take a miracle to bring it back to life again.

wow | 9/16/2009, 1:14 pm EST

It’s just scandal. Ellen has enough connections everywhere. Ii would be nice see her as judge in Olympic Games. Why not? She’s funny. For so many people it’s perfect professionalism replacement.I think it will be her next level.

Paul | 9/17/2009, 11:39 am EST

Just horrible. She with that irritating condescending attitude.
Yuck!

Anon | 9/23/2009, 1:17 am EST

No thanks to Ellen being a judge. Lost me as a viewer.

whocares | 9/24/2009, 11:46 pm EST

With all Paula weakness as a judge she’s kind person and the most important – she’s professional.
Ellen? Funny.. Somebody above wrote that she will be perfect with Simon.. O, really?
No, She will be better. Because Simon can’t joke like her. Funny.. What she can offer to show? What a a shame..

AI Fan | 11/17/2009, 7:18 pm EST

I think all these comments are just ludicrous. I am a huge AI fan, but I was never a really huge fan of Paula’s. I like Ellen, and think it will be interesting to see what she will bring to the show. I have watched every single season. True some were not as good as others, but I think as a fan I will give her a chance. And if she fails, I’ll still watch it, because it’s not the judges that keep me watching, it’s the contestants. Some are train wrecks and some are worthy of actually being there. So just keep an open mind, you just be pleasantly surprised, and if you no longer want to watch that is your perogative. It will still go on whether you choose to watch it or not.

Just my opinion. Have a nice day.

Anonymous | 11/19/2009, 5:08 pm EST

ellen is a moron without a brain and is overpaid thinks she must report her good deeds and still needs to simulate dumb bells on tv because she hasn’t realised she does not have any.
