Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper Join “VH1 Divas”

VH1 Divas added a Dreamgirl and a trio of rockers to their lineup today as the network announced that Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper and Melissa Etheridge will all perform at the September 17th concert at Brooklyn, New York’s Academy of Music. Martina McBride will also perform on the special. The quintet joins a previously announced roster of lady vocal talent: Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks and Adele. As Rolling Stone previously reported, former American Idol judge Paula Abdul will host the festivities, which will be broadcast live on September 17th on VH1.

In addition to the performers, VH1 also revealed that the evening’s presenters will include The Hills alums Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port, My Life on the D-List host Kathy Griffin, fellow diva Toni Braxton, the cast of the Fame remake and actor Ryan Kwanten, who plays Jason Stackhouse on HBO’s True Blood.

If attendance records have any standing, Lauper has officially usurped Whitney Houston and Mary J. Blige as the Queen of the Divas. This year’s appearance marks the third time Lauper will have performed at VH1’s special after featuring at both the 2002 and 2004 concerts. All the other 2009 performers are making their Divas debut. For Hudson, Divas represents yet another high-caliber appearance in 2009, with the Oscar winner following “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XLIII with performances at the Grammy Awards, American Idol and the Michael Jackson memorial concert. This year’s Divas concert will be VH1’s first since a 2004 special in Las Vegas.

I’m glad they’re adding some actually TALENTED women on the bill, but that does not erase the wrong of having Miley Cyrus on the program. She does not belong there in any way, shape or form. Calling her a “diva” is an utmost insult to the word itself, unless of course it is referring to her attitude, but even then “spoiled brat” would be more appropriate for her.

Lisa | 9/8/2009, 5:09 pm EST

The majority of these women could wipe the floor with Miley.

chris | 9/8/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Kelly Clarkson is the most talented out of all these women.

Jeniffer hudson deserves it, she is indeed a diva student. Her time to graduate as a diva are nearer.Miley cyrus will never be admitted to Diva University, she does not qualify.Remember the panel consists of Diana Ross, Miss Whitney Houston, The delicious Miss Tina Turner and the gracious queen Miss Aretha Franklin.

Vic2763 | 9/9/2009, 9:16 am EST

Miley’s the schoolyard kid who others enjoy knocking down, but doesnt have the sense to stay there. AND, while the kids are all laughing they knock you out when you’re not looking. I heard her song ‘When I Look At You’ from her new album and I was ko’d. The kids got chops. Give her a chance and dont judge on her past tween pop work. I also enjoy her song The Climb So give her a chance, and she may suprise us all.

Michael | 9/9/2009, 9:48 am EST

Just correcting a fact. Mary J. Blige has actually been on more – 1999 she performed a duet with Whitney; 2001, she performed a solo song and a duet with Aretha Franklin; 2002, she performed a solo song, a duet with Whitney again, and a duet with Shakira; 2003, she performed a solo medley, plus a duet with Chaka Khan. That’s four times. Just offering you the information.

I’m thrilled with the lineup and very happy to see that Adele was included. She’s amazingly talented and has not yet generated the kind of following I think she deserves.

Yo. | 9/9/2009, 2:04 pm EST

We all know that Cyndi is the queen of Divas. Some “singers” are queens, but Cyndi’s above. Of course, the queen of rock and roll rockssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssss

norma | 9/9/2009, 3:56 pm EST

Thanks for adding Jennifer Hudson. This should be a wonderful show. Jennifer has a voice like no other. The young multi-talented artist is certainly a class act.

Nick Culton | 9/9/2009, 8:03 pm EST

I’m not a big Miley fan but I think people need to get off her back. I think the kid is very talented and who knows she may surprise us. What’s done is done. Great Line up!
Huge fan of Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer, & leona!

Dannny | 9/10/2009, 11:39 am EST

Kick Miley and then we have a full set 5 star of divas,,, she’s just not fitting in the diva category,, calling her a diva is a mistake from beggining to end,, how could you even like her?? what’s wrong with america!!!

RIOHB | 9/10/2009, 3:18 pm EST

cindi lauper is a wore out dried up prune.
come off it you types…what gives…she is at best a california raisin or at worse, a new york minute.
it really shows the sad state of lima beans in southern peru when icebergs that break off the antarctic continent can cause so much damage to the price of tea in china.

Aluisio | 9/12/2009, 9:45 am EST

Cyndi Lauper forevar!!!! I love Cynd´s songs and her performance is always amazing. Her voice and tallent are brilhant. She Shines!!! A maior cantora de todos os tempos!!! Love from your fans from Brazil!

Frank Rossi | 9/12/2009, 9:12 pm EST

CYNDI LAUPER………WOW, Cyndi has one of the best voices out there today. Her songs have meaning and wonderful words. Cyndi is also a wonderful person, she does so much voluteer work for great charities. Cyndi also created the TRUE COLORS RESIDENCE in manhattan.

This Is It | 9/13/2009, 12:25 am EST

Wow, they need to kick Miley Cyrus out, and invite Janet Jackson and Duffy!!!

Billy | 9/13/2009, 10:09 am EST

“Dried up prune?” You must be talking about Madonna. Cyndi looks years younger than Madge and she’s 6 years older.

klaire | 9/13/2009, 4:16 pm EST

What is the song for the Vh1 Divas commercial that goes In New York…? Like the song…

terence torres | 9/14/2009, 2:42 am EST

CYNDI LAUPER WILL DEF. STEEL THE SHOW BY BEING TOP DIVA. SHE IS A POWER HOUSE PERFORMER AND IT’S TIME THAT SHE GET THE RESPECT THAT THE INDUSTRY HAS NOT GIVEN HER. HER SONG WRITING, VOCAL ABILITY AND TALENT FOR INSTRUMENTS IS TOTAL DIVA. AS A MATTER OF FACT SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PICKED AS PAULAS REPLACEMENT ON AMERICAN IDOL. I LOVE YOU CYNDA!!!!

J | 9/14/2009, 11:55 am EST

I am still confused how Miley is a diva! She doesn’t have the diva “voice” or “attitude”. Is she talented? Somewhat for her to sell the number of records she has but I think Kelly, Leona, Adele, and Jennifer deserve the title but Miley and even Jordan are not at that level yet.

denis cristian cardoso | 9/15/2009, 11:14 am EST

Cyndi is really the queen of the rock´n roll!! Great and powerful voice, great woman……
Cyndi is the best forever!

Michael | 9/15/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Madonna has no more than a 1 octave voice range. She is fit to sing fun dance tunes, but she will never fill the vocal shoes of Hudson or Lauper–both phenomenal vocal stylists!

Joker | 9/18/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Hi,
Super post, Need to mark it on Digg

MoreMileyPlease | 9/28/2009, 9:23 pm EST

Cyndi Lauper is good, and she’s performing, but she is not on the list of (up & coming)divas.
How is Miley Cyrus NOT a diva when she makes more money, sells more music, sells more concert tickets, sells more movie tickets, has more TV time…THEN ALL OF THE OTHER GIRLS COMBINED! – COMBINED!!!
Also, Rolling Stone seems to be doing a poor job telling it’s readers what’s going on. Miley’s Pop music has always had Rock influences, and after her current arena filling tour, it’s going to be ALL Rock ALL the time – with a few ballads thrown in. I HOPE you didn’t hear it here first.
