Wolfmother Break Out “Cosmic Egg” at Secret New York Show

A boozy night out was all it took to convince Wolfmother to give up their only night off this week. The Aussie stoner-rock heroes are currently in the midst of an East Coast jaunt opening for the Killers, but last night they also made a surprise appearance at the tiny Bowery Electric club in New York.

The band admitted on stage that the idea for the gig emerged during a drinking session the night before and only confirmed the show at around 3 p.m. in the afternoon. In the end, around 150 people crammed into the sweaty venue in downtown Manhattan to see Wolfmother turn in a ferocious, hour and 20 minute set of riotous riffing and prog-rock ecstasy.

“It’s a full moon tonight,” acknowledged frontman Andrew Stockdale early on. “That means something’s gonna happen. Someone’s gonna get naked!” Though there ultimately was no nudity, there were no shortage of thrills as the newly reconfigured and more expansive sounding four-piece showcased much of forthcoming album Cosmic Egg, including a ripping version of “New Moon Rising.” There were plenty of treats dished out from their fondly remembered self-titled debut album too, not least the fan-pleasing “Dimension” which got the crowd singing along.

“When I was demoing all the songs for this record and we were finished, I said to the engineer, ‘let’s just try a few songs as a joke,’ ” Stockdale recently told Rolling Stone of the birth of Cosmic Egg’s “In the Castle” (watch him play it acoustic here). “There’s no real narrative to it. ‘She could be the answer to your everything,’ that line was there and everything grew around that.” Overall, the new album is “heavier, more dramatic, more magnified, more experimental,” Stockdale says. “It’s super-sized Wolfmother.”

“If someone was to listen to ‘Woman’ and listen to a song in five years and I was doing the exact same thing, that’s a little bit unfortunate, I think,” he adds. “You can’t just fall back on the same comfort zone of what people like. I’ll probably do music that’s similar to that and other kinds of songs and other things as well,” he says.

About time for some new Wolfmother. I’m from Detroit and the first time I heard “Joker and the thief” I swore it was The White Stripes! Wolfmother is a breath of fresh air from the Nickleback/ Disturbed driven rock radio that makes me wanna turn the station to sports talk… Looking forward to the new album fo sho!

Wolfmother was good–but the Depreciation Guild (they went on before) were even better. Why no mention??? They were fab.

jeremy | 9/4/2009, 2:04 pm EST

deprecation were a decent enough trio of young guys trying to make it….but wolfmother was insane…half the people at the show had no idea who they were beforehand but after everybody was high on that shit

I was there pushed right up front and Wolfmother rocked the socks! I loved the energy, the songs, everything. I wasn’t too fond of the opener, but Wolfmother shredded the roof off that little bar! What an amazing show!
Cosmic Egg is going to be dynamite! I seriously can’t wait!
Thanks!

Joey, I’m with you, Detroit radio sucks! I listen to NPR. I thought the same thing about White Stripes too. God that show would have rocked. WM NEEDS to come to Detroit. We could use a lift! And Liam try and find something you do like and post about it!

Saw Wolfmother at the Roxy and they freaking rocked! All you critics can shut your pie holes…. they are the real deal live. Their sound is progressive especially in some of the sounds they have on this new album. Wolfmother will always rock in my book!

I saw these dudes open for The Killers…they were really good!

I love me some Wolfmother, but I’ve got my fingers crossed hard that this new album doesn’t officially lump them in to the sophomore slump. The new stuff I’ve heard pales in comparison to the first CD.

I hear people knock WM for being too Led Zep derivative. So what? That’s better than being another Greenday!

v-town gabe | 9/8/2009, 11:42 pm EST

joey you are right brother, when are they going to stop playing nickelback/disturbed and all the pretty punk crap(good charlotte, blink, hawthorne heights)Wolmother may not be the best band ever but they are definitely different and new and ORIGINAL. I saw them at Coachella a few years ago and they rocked. everyone then was surprised and asking who they were. too bad the coachella folks had them play in the middle of the day instead at night time. wolfmother kicks ass looking forward to their new stuff

Protomass | 9/11/2009, 7:56 am EST
