There are 50 reasons to watch TV this fall, and Rolling Stone kicks off the countdown in our new issue — on stands today — with the outrageously hilarious Number One: Stephen Colbert. Neil Strauss sits down with the host of The Colbert Report to find out how a God-loving square became TV’s most dangerous man. Grab the issue for his story, and check out exclusive Q&A here: Stephen Colbert on Deconstructing the News, Religion and the Colbert Nation. Plus, track the comic’s rise from sketch-show obscurity to American Hero and watch some of his finest clips in Before the Report.

Plus: Watch the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia head to Comic-Con and the crew from Glee share their favorite performances from the upcoming season. And look back at all the times TV has graced the cover of Rolling Stone.

Grab the issue for more of our TV special, including Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, David Duchovny, Ed Helms, Padma Lakshmi and Neil Patrick Harris. Plus Gavin Edwards hits the road with Pink, Guy Lawson examines how Mexico’s drug lords have transformed the drug trade, and a roundup of the summer’s biggest tours, from Pearl Jam to Nine Inch Nails.

I used to find Stephen Colbert funny, but his schtick has grown tired for me.

PINK was a good read! Smart, freakigly talented, funny, humble, etc etc i always wondered why Rolling Stone never had her on the cover of the U.S issue, i mean she is in the cover in other countries , but not the US. Why?

Courtney Love invented rock by writing all of Nirvana’s songs? Correct me if I’m mistaken, but didn’t the British Invasion take place decades before?

the British Invasion was the beginning of rock and roll?

guess you never heard of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc, etc, etc.

I’ve long given RS a reprieve for their name and constantly being behind the trends. But when they do a Colbert cover months after a cutting-edge periodical like Newsweek (for a guy whose peak was last year), I gotta know what’s going on.

I was going through my George W. Bush and The Weapons of Mass Distraction Trading Cards and low and behold there is one of Stephen Colbert! Now I think he is a great SATIRIST and was ‘worried’ about he having a card in there, but KNOWING he’s made the COVER of the Rolling Stone makes everything ALLRIGHT again!

Samoys | 10/3/2009, 12:35 pm EST
