Keith Richards on Recording With Jack White, New Rolling Stones LP

If Keith Richards has his way, the Rolling Stones will start working on a new record next year. “I’m trying to gather the boys together,” he tells Rolling Stone. “One way or another, I’ll get them back in line.” In the meantime, the guitarist recently recorded songs with Jack White. “I enjoy working with Jack,” Richards says. “We’ve done a couple of tracks.”

12 Shades of White: The Many Guises of Jack White

Might White produce the Stones record? “I couldn’t fuel that rumor any more than to say Jack and I are in touch,” says Richards. Meanwhile, Mick Jagger and Richards are sorting through outtakes from 1972’s Exile on Main Street for a forthcoming deluxe edition of the LP. “There’s new songs on there, stuff we’ve forgotten about,” Richards says. “Mick and I were looking at each other like, ‘Ah, did we do that?’ ” (Look back at the making of Exile.)

Finally, Keith is still working on his long-awaited autobiography. “I’m working on it with James Fox,” he says. “I’m trying to remember things, which is very difficult.”

Keith is God.

redraiderdc | 9/2/2009, 2:32 pm EST

A Jack White produced Stones record would be their biggest commerical hit in decades. Look what he did for Loretta. They have to make that happen.

Richard | 9/2/2009, 3:00 pm EST

White producing the Stones? Why not?

He couldn’t do worse than the Dust Brothers and Don Was.

Mike | 9/2/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Can’t wait to hear that Exile on Main St. deluxe reissue.

MLC | 9/2/2009, 3:09 pm EST

What Keith really nnees to do is invite Mick Taylor to sit-in on the next record. He’s the guy who
made all those Exile on Main Street songs sound so good!!!

Hamm I Am | 9/2/2009, 3:30 pm EST

@ Ryan

If Keith is God, God snorted his dead father’s ashes mixed with some blow. Seems highly unlikely that a being of this level of intellegence would be the Almighty. But then again, I’ve been wrong before. lol.

@Hamm I Am

And then god gave his son up to be killed (crucified) and consumed (communion) by people who eat his flesh and drink his blood every single day. So that’s sane, but a little snort is crazy?
I guess that’s why there’s seventeen kind of Jell-O and a nearly infinite number of religions from which to choose.

ronniewrec | 9/2/2009, 4:01 pm EST

Oh mhy God…more Jack White nonsense? The most overrated poser to come out in the last ten years.

He’s fooled everybody into thinking that he’s all that. Meanwhile, nobody knows one song of his.

CrystalSpyder4 | 9/2/2009, 4:02 pm EST

This sounds like it would be a fantastic collaboration. As in the case with Loretta Lynn’s “Van Lear Rose”, we may see some magic here.

Chris | 9/2/2009, 4:12 pm EST

ronniewrec,

Jack White is not overrated. He’s saving rock ‘n’ roll while shit bands that you probably listen to like Nickelback and Creed are just putting it down the drain. White is a hell of a guitar player and a hell of songwriter also. He wrote the biggest rock song of this decade, “Seven Nation Army.”

People need to stop hating on Jack White and appreciate that Richards loves him for what he’s done for rock music.

mrrockandroll | 9/2/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Hey ronniewrec:

why not stop living in the past and try and keep up with where rock and roll is heading? I agree with what Chris said, which is basically that Jack White has saved rock music. I love both the Stones and the White Stripes (and the Raconteurs, for that matter). Thank GOD that Jack came along and is putting some guitar-based creativity back into rock and roll. Creed, Coldplay and Nickelback can SUCK IT!

Hamm I Am | 9/2/2009, 4:46 pm EST

@ AC

Your literal interpretation of religious lore does seem ridiculous, now that you put it like that. You’ve won my vote! When your dad knocks off, have him cremated, bring him over with a couple of kilos of Peruvian Pixie Stix, maybe throw in some of that lemon Jello you’ve been raving about and let’s have ourselves a party!

ronniewrec | 9/2/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Hey Chris,

You want to hear some kick-ass blues music? Band of Skulls. Those guys (and a girl) kick out the jams.

And for the record, I would never, ever, EVER listen to those bands you mentioned that should not be mentioned.

And Jack White is still overrated.

Keef! | 9/2/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Gotta love Keef Richards. The man knows how to keep it real.

I can’t believe the suggestion that Jack White is a poser. Clearly written by someone with absolute shite taste in music.

Name one song of his? Ever heard of 7 Nation Army? Probably the best, not to mention catchiest, rock and roll tune to come out in the last 10 years.

I’ve seen the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather live on multiple occasions. Anyone who has seen Jack with any of these bands will know that he is the real deal. Not to mention his appearance with the Stones on the Shine a Light doc that Scorcese did. I was feeling that chemistry. Hopefully he produces their next record!

Greg | 9/2/2009, 5:01 pm EST

Jack White is trying to deconstruct rock music back to it’s raw, unproduced blues roots. More power to him! It’s about the moment, not about the shine you can put on the music in a recording studio. Jack White’s music has feel and passion, something sadly lacking from most of today’s studio produced drones.

Jon | 9/2/2009, 5:04 pm EST

That could be a really interesting collaboration. Jack White has many of the same blues and country influences that the Stones did in their early days. Plus, he emphasizes live recordings using vintage equipment, and the Stones could stand to get away from the highly-produced stuff they’ve done in recent years.

Danzbassman | 9/2/2009, 5:12 pm EST

Jack White working with the Stones could be great. While I don’t care for the White Stripes (no bass player!) The Racontuers and Dead Weather both rock. Even liked JW’s theme for the Bond movie.

FXC | 9/2/2009, 5:29 pm EST

All i can do is a facepalm when someone who would potentially love the stripes dismisses them for the lack of a bassist. Are we really having that conversation in 2009? Does the black keys get held to that same standard? I can name a few others. Break a rock & roll convention and rock & roll rebels yell foul. Its pathetic. I am looking forward to anything jack does based off this youtube clip alone. /watch?v=Ybqh-TJTWC4

This is great news all around. God bless Keith, the Stones and Jack !

As for the debate about bass less bands, The Doors didn’t have a bassist either & they did pretty good for themselves. ( yes , I know they had a bassist play on a few albums , but when they played live they were a bass less band)

Too much over-posting, and, my God, can’t people spell anymore?

Rosie | 9/2/2009, 8:46 pm EST

I agree with Chris. All the new rock music is horrible. After the grunge era it went down the drain. I absolutely love the White Stripes because they have that classic rock/blues influence.

tim | 9/2/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Partyed with the Keith man on Jost Van Dyke, tiny British Virgin Island several years ago.He just showed up at the tent camp schack on the beach about 11 pm, smoked drank & played music till sun-up. Came back & did the samething a couple nights later. A true gem, nice guy!

Jethro | 9/2/2009, 11:04 pm EST

Jack White should “put the blues back in the Stones”? In case you missed it, the Stones last album was plenty blues based, and “Back of My Hand” was the purest blues the Stones have done in ages. The Problem with the Stones as I see it is they haven’t been adventurous enough, and have barely been releasing any new music. Enough reissues, thanks.

Weegie | 9/3/2009, 12:01 am EST

Keef is the greatest figure in the history of Rock and Roll…hands down. Jack is his brightest student. It’s like Muddy Waters passing the torch to The Stones. Now Keef hands it to Jack the Prodigal Son. And the mook who questioned Keith’s intelligence ? Keef’s home library is legendary, and he’s a font of streetwise and natural wisdom. You don’t know s*^#t.

Weegie | 9/3/2009, 12:11 am EST

“Hamm I Am” is the poster…..Dr. Seuess by way of the man hunk on Mad Men….obviously has a man-crush on John Hamm……..I think “Hamm I Am” prefers Judy Garland to Keith and Jack….wink wink….And er, Hamm, it’s spelled INTELLIGENCE….a very ironic word for you to misspell, yes yes ? And you might want to retire the “lol”. Fool.

MDWG | 9/3/2009, 12:16 am EST

Maybe its time Mr. Keith to retire? While we love your music, well old music, unless you pump something new and fresh into my ears. I cannot bear to see the Rolling Stones. The one band this magazine is named after, too have its name shamed. I do however support the studio recording between Jack White and Richards. Both two of a kind and I can’t wait to see what comes of it!

Jethro | 9/3/2009, 1:30 am EST

Guess what? THE STONES ALREADY HAVE RETIRED. One new studio album in the past 12 years. Take all these reissues, B-sides, greatest hits, “deluxe” versions, and live albums and shove them straight up your rear end.

therealrocknrolla | 9/3/2009, 3:36 am EST

1. Jack White and poser do not belong in the same sentence.
2. All new rock music is horrible? Pretty closed minded eh? Try the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Black Keys to name a few right away…
3. Wasn’t it fun to see Jack White and the Stones perform together in that movie of the Stones concert? Happpy to hear/see more.

Witterings | 9/3/2009, 3:45 am EST

New Album- Good News at all!
The greatest Rock’n Roll Band ever!!

TO THOSE WHO SAY... | 9/3/2009, 4:32 am EST

THAT THE STONE ARE FINISHED or other bad things… Why do YOU say things like “they should stop, retire, they’re dead” or this kind of crap… If you don’t like it, don’t buy it but shut the fuck up!!! With every thing they’ve done, they are free to do what they want and earned the right to make their music without having hatefull jerkoffs telling them what to do… You must be jealous because your life is boring..

Actually, he IS that good, and he is a huge talent. The heavy hitters in the biz would not associate with him if he wasn’t the real deal.

Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman | 9/3/2009, 8:33 am EST

If you guys want to create some excitement, do a new album and tour with Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman back in the band. That would be an amazing show (and keep ROnnie in the lineup too!) All 6 remaining Stones…that would be historic!

Would love to see the Stones with Taylor, Wood, and Wyman. Unfortunately, Bill will not fly and that is the reason he is no longer a Rolling Stone. This is according to Ronnie Wood.

Jungleland2 | 9/3/2009, 10:22 am EST

Jack White IS the right guy to produce the next Stones record. He might even be able to get them to only put out the 8 strongest songs instead of the 16+ on Bigger Bang (where half were filler..same with Bridges..good songs get lost in the “let’s put every song on this to get more royalties)

Hooner | 9/3/2009, 10:36 am EST

I agree with Pedro

Ross K. | 9/3/2009, 10:52 am EST

MB | 9/3/2009, 11:08 am EST

The Stones have paid there dues. They are allowed to do whatever they want! If they came out with an album with them talking about there past id buy it. They earned the right to do that. Im not big on Jack White and I do feel hes a bit overrated but at the same time not that bad. Hes a solid B guitar player but no where in the likes of Keith as far as creavtivity and writing is concerned. Remember Keith pretty much wrote Beggers and Exile.

Whatever they release, I’ll buy it. Whatever the cost of a ticket, I’ll pay it. There is nothing more thrilling than the opening moments of a Stones show seeing Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on the same stage. No one come’s close.

Anonymous | 9/3/2009, 12:10 pm EST

I would LOVE to see the Stones avoid another mega stadium tour and do theaters. Look at how cool Scorsese’s film was of the Stones playing the Belmont in NYC. They should play theaters, stop playing a lot of their warhorses, and dig deep into their amazing music library. Sign me up for that!

Anonymous | 9/3/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Don | 9/3/2009, 4:16 pm EST

I saw the stones in 2005 and they are far from dead my friends, they still rock. But from what I’ve heard lately Ron Wood isn’t doing so good. In fact there have been rumours that if he doesn’t clean up he could be fired from the stones. I’ve also heard that the white stripes aren’t touring because Meg White has problems with anxiety. It seems clear to me that Ron Wood is holding The stones back, and Meg is holding Jack White back. So here’s my idea. How cool would it be if Jack White became the new guitar player in the rolling stones. It would be awesome, you know it. What do you all think?

Don, I like how you think. Jack White doesn’t have to commit to being a full-time Stone. Just do one tour…probably their last.

Milo Davis | 9/3/2009, 6:38 pm EST

The only good Rolling Stones albums were the ones that Jimmy Miller produced, “Beggar’s Banquet”, “Let it Bleed” “Sticky Fingers” “Exile on Main St” “Goats Head Soup”

Don | 9/3/2009, 7:59 pm EST

Well that’s an opinion really, I enjoyed many other stones albums such as Some girls, Tattoo You,Voodoo Lounge, as well as older albums like Aftermath and Between the buttons. But I agree that nothing has ever really topped the Miller albums for me. But I think Jack White is an extroidinary talent and could make an awesome stones record.

Jud Richards | 9/3/2009, 8:36 pm EST

I just got a boner

Don | 9/3/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Has anyone else heard the rumours that Charlie Watts quit the rolling stones yesterday. It was all over the internet yesterday and now it’s said to be false, but one can’t help but wonder. It’s hard to imagine the stones without Watts. Do you think they could go on without him? They survived Jones, Taylor, and Wyman leaving could they survive Watts?

John | 9/3/2009, 9:15 pm EST

I hope that this happens. Jack White is a talented man and I bet he could really bring something great out of the stones, the likes of which have not been seen in years.

Clint Hewetson | 9/3/2009, 11:10 pm EST

Dude. Its so refreshing to see such an effortless juxtaposition of new and old. These cats are kindred spirits and will bring the best out of one another. Jack White is all that is right with rock and roll, and Keith and the rest of the boys help write the book. Stoked.

John | 9/3/2009, 11:28 pm EST

The stones need to work with White. Look what he’s done for Loretta Lynn. i would love to see a hard core bluesy stones again.

Jackinthebox | 9/4/2009, 12:33 am EST

Yeah get Jack White to play guitar in the stones and make Daryll Jones an official member too. Let Jack contribute some songs to the album and with the combined efforts of Jagger/Richards/White you’ll probably end up with the best stones record ever. A true masterpiece that would finally prove once and for all that the stones are the greatest rock and roll band of all time.

Blake | 9/4/2009, 12:42 am EST

Hey man that makes sense because Jack can play great, he writes awesome songs, he is an awesome singer and a great producer who has revitalized not only Loretta lynn’s career but rock and roll in general. The stones don’t need Ron Wood and all his baggage with his substance problems and his 18 year old wife. And yes I too think Daryll Jones should be an official member of the stones. He’s earned it.

Jerry | 9/4/2009, 1:22 am EST

Jack White is not a huge talent. Many times people latch on to the flavor of the month for the buzz of it. Believe me, Keith isn’t in awe of Jack White.

Palafox | 9/4/2009, 10:45 am EST

Who parked Keith’s walker?

Hogan | 9/4/2009, 1:37 pm EST

I disagree I think Jack White is a huge talent, he is the real deal. Sure you can’t compare him to Richards, the guy’s been playing for half a century, but of all the new age guitar players out there I think this guy’s the real deal.

Laurence Bradley | 9/4/2009, 4:19 pm EST

I’d love to see Jack White work with the boys to finally make the great, post-Some Girls, Stones album we’ve all been hoping for. I’d also love to see Jack tour with the Stones, but I doubt he’d be willing to take 2 years off from his own projects for the tour. But, we can always hope….

MatsFan1 | 9/4/2009, 4:23 pm EST

So, Jack White is not a huge talent because Keith Richards is not in awe of him? You’d be hard pressed to find ANYONE who Keith Richards is in “awe” of.

Mr Darkbottom | 9/4/2009, 5:31 pm EST

It might be really great, give it a chance.

So, Carl, “Jack White is not a huge talent. Many times people latch on to the flavor of the month for the buzz of it. Believe me, Keith isn’t in awe of Jack White”
No one said he was, he certainly didn’t, and doesn’t need to, but with the Pages, Dylans, Townshends, etc. infinitum, you’re saying they all latched onto a “flave of the month” all at the same time?
It couldn’t be because they have seen it and done it all, and can pick out the next torch bearer out of the crowd quite easily…maybe the guy just “has it” Simple as that…yet the jealousy prevails….

Look Jack White is talented. Dylan, the stones, the who, Page have all worked with this guy cause he is good and he is the future of rock and roll, he is the next in line to take the reigns. I would love to see Jack play guitar for the stones cause lately for me at least Ronnie has been a bit of a let down. And yes Daryll Jones has earned the recignition of full membership when will these guys finally give it to him?

JaJa | 9/4/2009, 9:17 pm EST

This would be the greatest comeback in rock and roll history. It just has huge success written all over it.

Anonymous | 9/4/2009, 10:04 pm EST

jack white is rock and roll right now.

AlAl | 9/5/2009, 5:42 am EST

“Fat johnny depp hits the studio with old baseball glove” I wonder how keef thinks about jacks “If-its-not-recorded-with-a-ca ssete-deck-in-a-basement-its-a -sell-out” attitude

Gem | 9/5/2009, 6:44 am EST

I think he should change his name to Jack Gallagher, join Oasis, and save music.

BohemianConspiracy | 9/5/2009, 9:54 am EST

jack gallagher? yep and why not Jack Black…that guy is funny and rock n roll enough to makes us forget that Noel is gone…but Gem…you’re probably not the original Gem of Oasis am I right ? … Whatever…
Oasis can continue without Noel (even if he was the captain)…they have 3 respectable songwriters in the band (Andy has done great things in the past)…so until water remains z Oasis will still alive…but that’s a climate debate…
and Exile and the stones of 70-75…were are the stolen songs of Mick Taylor… hehe… i ‘m a fan of the Stones but i still think that Keith and Mick are Dictators… brothers of Mr Kadhafi (born in 1942!)

einstein | 9/5/2009, 10:01 am EST

jack white is an overrated schlubb.

Chea | 9/5/2009, 11:00 am EST

(sniff, sniff)Your appreciation of the Stones (especially Keef)brings tears to my eyes!THE STONES are the greatest rock n’ roll in the world! I saw them first in 69 and have never missed a tour.OLD!!!! I can tell you for a fact they get better every tour. For all you “HATERS” why are you jealous, because theres nobobody in your generation who can match up!I would love to hear what you think is good!Good music stands up to the test of time! Bach,Beethoven, the Stones!!!!There is already LARGE volume of Stones work that has done that!LONG LIVE THE STONES AND GOD BLESS KEEF!!!!!!!

Don | 9/5/2009, 12:31 pm EST

well said Chea, couldn’t of said it better myself. I agree the stones as a band and a live act have only gotten better. But in the studio they are good, but not great. I love the stones, all of them, but like I was saying before if Ron Wood continues to hurt himself and the band they should let him go. They did it to Brian Jones and he was their founder! I hope Wood straghtens out but like I said before if he doesn’t I really think that Jack White would be a good replacement. And whether or not that happens I still hope he produces their next record cause that would be great.

Jason Gordon | 9/5/2009, 4:59 pm EST

The Stones are the most overrated rock band in history. They could never hold a candle to The Beatles,
Led Zepellin, or The Who. The last time they had a decent album was twenty five years ago.

CS | 9/5/2009, 5:14 pm EST

Fire Daryl, Chuck all all the other clowns around the band, get Bill back, record a 10-song LP with Jack and get on tour with it (and stop playing all the old warhorses over and over again)

Tonefragments | 9/5/2009, 8:55 pm EST

Jason I only slightly disagree with you, KISS is the most overrated rock band of all time, then the Stones.

ronny from Belgium | 9/5/2009, 11:29 pm EST

yeah;I’m completely for it .Jack White will surely put new energie in the band.He ’s the man who is following the rock and rolltradition.and another message for the Stoneshaters:get lost boring assholes. The Stones are a monument and for me the Stones gave sense to my life

Matt W (overrated yeah right.) | 9/6/2009, 12:21 am EST

I not only approve of this collaboration, I’m thrilled. It was only a matter of time these two hit the studio together, I will be obnoxious and say i called it.

Basically anyone who says The Rolling Stones are overrated, really hasn’t done their homework.

The White Stripe’s Elephant, is the Beggars Banquet of my generation.

I’m sure if Ludwig Van Beethoven were still alive, he’d want to work with Jack White.

Jethro | 9/6/2009, 6:51 pm EST

I didn’t say the Stones SHOULD retire, I said they ARE retired.

Anonymous | 9/6/2009, 7:39 pm EST

A deluxe ‘Exile’ would be most welcome, i wouldn’t mind seeing a deluxe Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out too!
Could the Stones perform Exile in it’s entirety? One off show, film it?
Bring back Bill and Mick Taylor as guests?

MotTheWot | 9/6/2009, 7:43 pm EST

A deluxe ‘Exile would be most welcome, i wouldn’t mind seeing a deluxe Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out too.Could the Stones play ‘Exile’ in it’s entirety? A one off show, film it and bring back Bill and Mick Taylor as guests.

meagain | 9/6/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Miss you comes to mind.

Brian | 9/6/2009, 10:05 pm EST

hey whoever is saying the stones are overrated obviously has poor music taste. The Rolling stones have worked many many years very very hard and they have earned their title. you are probably some punk kid who knows nothing but likes to act like he does saying certain bands are overrated because you have nothing better to do. If you don’t like the stones fine, but don’t insult us that do and waste all of our time with your bashing. If you don’t like the stones why are you on this post. You obviously have nothing intelligent to say so shut up.

Tonefragments | 9/7/2009, 1:12 pm EST

First of Brian and all you others who cry and lash out with anger and immature words when someone does not find any appeal in “your” band, I am 35 and extremely knowledgeable about music and the history there of. I judge all bands by two bands, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. If you dig the Stones fine, but you are the one who acts and responds in an unintelligent way. To state that a band is overrated is not bashing, it is an opinion. Why do I post on this if I am not a fan of the stones? Not that anyone on here owes you an answer to anything, but I believe this article was about two people not just Keith, and I am a fan of the one who cares about being original and writing some funky ass new tunes about every 6 months, that would be Jack. How long has it been since Keith has written a memorable riff now?

So quit your crying and grow up. And what “title” have the stones earned?

littlegeorge | 9/7/2009, 2:31 pm EST

good news, the Stones seem to begin rolling again.
i could only see & listen to two shows in the 90’s, but as they still keep on and perform their own work, the Rolling Stones seem to me like Shakespeare or Molière. worth remembering, please do another tour!

Patrick | 9/7/2009, 2:53 pm EST

I am so excited to hear that Jagger and Richards are sorting through outtakes from Exile on Main St. Let’s hope this new album is very bluesy. I want them to trace back to their blues roots once again. I’m so sick of the Bridges to Babylon style they created for themselves. I’m ready for the next Exile on Main St!

matt | 9/7/2009, 3:00 pm EST

I’d like to see the stones come out with a very loud aggrsive record that would prove they can still rock with the best of them. Blow everyone and everyones hearing away.

Patrick | 9/7/2009, 3:04 pm EST

I bet Cocksucker Blues will be on the forthcoming LP…

Patrick | 9/7/2009, 3:11 pm EST

With Jack White…I’m guessing an all country and blues album.

Patrick | 9/7/2009, 3:17 pm EST

Hey Brian, I agree man…anyone sayin shit about the Stones needs a f*%@in ass beating.

littlegeorge | 9/7/2009, 5:03 pm EST

if my few words were off-topic, “Keith is God” may be of the same kind. i hope to see the Rolling Stones again on a stage, and i always keep far away, whoever may be on it. Clapton was God, was he? and nowadays he gives seated conferences like professors do. i prefered to invest in Urban Jungle & Bridges to Babylon. and eventually in print media like your magazine. :-) still good news, thank you, that’s all.

Jethro | 9/8/2009, 2:14 am EST

I used to think the Stones were capable of a late-career recording renaissance like the one Dylan is having. But I don’t see it now. This band doesn’t have any continuity as far as recording goes. All the great Stones albums developed out of steady work as a band. The Stones no longer have that continuity.

Al | 9/8/2009, 8:56 am EST

Jack White is so overrated. There was also a time when everyone collaborated with Bob Geldof. Was he a musical genius? Peter Frampton was another everyone wanted a piece of too.

FLAVOR OF THE MONTH

raj | 9/8/2009, 2:24 pm EST

the obvious choice to produce the stones is danger mouse….come on those psychedelic touchs he put on beck and the black keys are straight from the stones when they were GREAT. KEITH GET DANGER MOUSE jack white…can produce the new led zepplin cd

Boyda | 9/8/2009, 5:17 pm EST

Hey Al, if Jack White is the “Flavor of the month,” he’s been so for what… at least 6 years?!!?!?! He is a talented artist.

I think White would be a great choice to produce a new Stones record. Knows the blues, rock, and psychedelia. May even breath some more life into the Stones.

Brian | 9/8/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Listen to me tonefragments, you don’t know what you are talking about. Okay look you might be 35, the stones are in their sixties and are still rocking out while you go on posts like this trying to say they are overrated. You’re right it is an opinion, but you spewed it off like a fact, you ignorant man.

Darell | 9/8/2009, 8:32 pm EST

Look Brian, Tonefragments, I think you both make great points, but this debate is pointless. Tonefragments, I also love The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. i don’t think however that the stones are overrated they have worked long and hard and have made many remarkable songs over their career. I also don’t think KISS is overrated because KISS never tried to be this remarkable musical force, they were rock and roll. They were KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid. They were about having a good time, making catchy antems and putting on a great stage show. And you know what, they probably did a better job than anybody else at it.

john h. | 9/8/2009, 11:21 pm EST

as stated before danger mouse should produce.

Tonefragments | 9/9/2009, 2:03 am EST

You’re right Brian you win, congrats.

“Okay look you might be 35, the stones are in their sixties and are still rocking out while you go on posts like this trying to say they are overrated. You’re right it is an opinion, but you spewed it off like a fact, you ignorant man.”

Well stated, who could argue with that flawless logic. So when does someone who gives their opinion not state it as fact to themselves? I mean isn’t that the essence of an individuals opinion, that it is something they believe?

It’s a shame that a difference of opinion is something you don’t understand nor encourage. You must be a follower, sorry for that.

Jethro | 9/9/2009, 3:10 am EST

No producer is going to re-energize the Stones. Only the Stones can do that. It would help if they finally kicked Ron Wood out. Wood is a major liability onstage. Give Taylor a call, I can’t imagine he’s not up for a huge payday that a Stones tour would give him. If Taylor can’t/won’t, call Waddy Wachtel.

Jethro | 9/9/2009, 3:14 am EST

Rick Rubin would seem to suit the Stones for a producer. I thought the Rubin-produced “Wandering Spirit” sounded excellent.

Elio | 9/9/2009, 9:53 am EST

If Keith’s trying to get the boys into the studio, he might set out some bowls of liver pills and lipitor –and don’t forget the poise pads!

brian jones | 9/9/2009, 12:43 pm EST

dont trust that fucker richards! him and that other ass wipe jagger are only working with this new guy because of his name, ‘jack-off white’. the pair of fuckers are so empty they now go back to old crap they cant even remember to update it. what kind of shit is this? the answer is…shit! i could go on but you get the message.

ltr08 | 9/9/2009, 2:59 pm EST

I agree Ryan…he IS!
The Stones are great! and Jack White is exceptional as well.. I love hearing the results of young artists paired with iconic veterans! Enjoying life is for all of us not just the young! And one thing the Stones have done plenty of is enjoy life! Gotta love them for it!

Jack | 9/9/2009, 8:43 pm EST

I just got the newly remastered Beatles albums today and while I love the stones I have to say that The Beatles are the greatest rock and roll band of all time, but still the stones are still rocking.

Hammersmith77 | 9/9/2009, 9:14 pm EST

The Beatles are great and deserve all of the glory they get. But for me, it’s always been the Stones. The beatles never got close to something like Cant’ you hear me knockin’.

Hammersmith77 | 9/9/2009, 9:18 pm EST

And I love Zeppelin as much as the next guy but they outright stole most of their best songs from American Bluesmen like Muddy Waters and that is a fact.

Edd | 9/9/2009, 9:32 pm EST

The Stones have some very memorable music, and are one of the best rock bands ever. That said, they havent done anything interesting in 25 years. They should just pack it in and live off royalties. Jack White has zero talent, 7-nation army is garbage.

redman | 9/9/2009, 11:28 pm EST

All the Stones did was everything! Even just making halfway decent albums at their age and selling out massive arenas around the world is pretty fuckin impressive if you ask me! Yeah Mick Taylor was the best guitarist but he is uncool, fat and would die on stage if he ever had to do a world tour with the Stones. Would I love to see him hell yeah but it ain’t happening. If you want to see the Stones from 1968-1974 go see the Black Crowes the only band really keeping that sound alive! God bless the Robinsons! Bash the Stones if you want but go see them live and try not to have a good time! Good Luck and if you haven’t seen “It might get loud” you don’t know the real Jack White! We should all appreciate his deep root in the darkest of blues!

Anonymous | 9/9/2009, 11:41 pm EST

tall

zman | 9/10/2009, 1:24 am EST

How could anyone say that the stones were overated. Give it a rest guy. Yes like all bands they did have some poor records . . Emotional rescue comes to mind but even on that disc there were some great tracks. In terms of good solid R&B plus memorable rock tunes the Stones cannot be overated. I agree with those that have already written in this forum, bring back the boys with a solid Jumpin Jack Flash style album. The Who? – get real guy. Led Zepplin yes but the Who – please don’t make me laugh!

Delta George | 9/10/2009, 3:22 am EST

Heres the deal, the Stones get either, Bill Wyman or someone like Larry Taylor for some stand-up bass, get some old Ampeg, Silvertone or old pre-CBS fender amps. Find and old church somewhere with good acoustics. Play some old Blues and Rock n Roll, like obscure Chuck Berry,Bo Diddley Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo etc. and let it rip.As for producers Jack white would be great, but you could dig up the classic Andrew Lood Oldham, or Jimmy Miller(if he is still alive). It might get the juices flowing for that Raw music that they made long ago. Also they could go to the vaults, I have some great bootlegs of the Stones doing Blues and R&B that were left off the early albums. Jagger ought to release those cuts he did with Lester Butler and the Red Devils I heard one cut, it was hot, they are supposed to be hot!

Peter | 9/10/2009, 3:23 am EST

Anyone doubt Stones the greatest?
Think where rock would be today if the Stones had never existed. Dylan quote..”Stones greatest R&R BAND IN THE WORLD AND ALWAYS WILL BE. the LAST TOO. Everything that came after them, metal, rap, punk, new wave, pop-rock, you name it..you can trace it back to the Stones. Nuff said, dudes.

Guitarzzo | 9/10/2009, 8:42 am EST

Jack White is not a flavor of the month, but he’s not that great either. You can help define a period of time (see Duran Duran, Twisted Sister, The Spin Doctors, etc) like White has the last 5 years or so, but it still doesn’t make him worthy of producing the Stones. He hasn’t earned that. He will be cared about as much as Duran Duran in 20 years. He’s just not that good folks.

brian jones | 9/10/2009, 1:25 pm EST

u people that post here are all stones bum boys!
for the last 20 plus years they have released crap album after crap album with one half ass decent song while the rest are fillers that could have been written by a wet fart!
come on…get objective here…and get off the idea you are going to get a date with jagger any time soon. the stones are a good live band but a crap recording band…plain and simple.

grego | 9/10/2009, 7:59 pm EST

In my opinion, and this is strictly my opinion the 5 greatest rock bands of all time are in this order
1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. The Who
4. The Rolling stones
5. Jimi Hendrix Experience
Hendrix revolutionized the guitar, The Who rewrote the books on loudness, sonic prowess, and musical virtuosity and Led zeppelin refined the style both artists created. Meanwhile The beatles can be credited with being the reboot rock and roll definitely needed in the early 60s and inventing modern music and are probably the most important rock band of all time. So why then are the stones considered the greatest, cause setting all other stuff aside, they just flat out rocked.

Fred | 9/10/2009, 9:44 pm EST

grego nicely said. The stones never needed to be historically significant by changing rock music, they just let others change it and they rocked on with the changes. That is why they have survived. But I do think you overlooked one band. The Kinks. They were the original rock alternative. They were so revolutionary and so brilliant. Jack White is pretty brilliant too, so I hope this happens, but I hope also that he doesn’t sidetrack himself too much and gets back to work on a seventh white stripes album. Sure playing wtih the stones, dylan, and Page is exciting but also remember people, while i love these bands, and I think the music they have made is timeless, they are nearing their end if existince and The White stripes are one of the few newer bands we have that show us a possibly promising future for rock and roll, let’s focus on the future too.

Peter | 9/11/2009, 1:20 am EST

First, love the (#2) Beatles and(3) Zep, however until Stones released “Satisfaction” all bands, including Beatles, were so much fluff. Unfortunately, Zep has been revealed as mostly a revisionist band of other artist, the Who because they were loud? Clapton came before Hendrix, etc., etc. I will take Dylans opinion over anyone else here, any day. And “brian jones” don’t like the Stones, why are you here opinionating, or should I say garbling inaudibly?

Peter | 9/11/2009, 1:38 am EST

P.S. “brian jones,”
Please tell us your band or individual choice for innovative, ground breaking and influential musical style.
The Bay City Rollers? Possibly you confused this site with theirs?
Rollers, Rolling, could happen.

grego | 9/11/2009, 4:27 pm EST

I didn’t mean to say that Led Zeppelin were revisionist I mean they perfected an unperfected art. Bands like The Who, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, etc. all wrote the blueprints and Zeppelin critiqued it on it’s first album and later evolved into a style that is completely their own. The stones never really revolutioned rock music itself as much as they revolutionized the image of rock, the badness. But it didn’t matter cause they still have more first rate tunes than probably any other band besides the beatles. So my point is the stones just flat out rock.

The Transoniq One | 9/11/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Zeppelin eclipses them all for one reason: Keepng both the soul of rock-n-roll and the musical future in a single vision. I love the Beatles and the Stones and the Who but they always let me down with a lot of stuff on various album sides that was “just stuff”. Not one Zeppelin album side has a bunch of fillers or out and out clunkers. Even Physical Graffitti is mind-blowing. That shows integrity by providing music lovers with consistant quality over all – period.

Peter | 9/14/2009, 10:34 am EST

Transoniq:
Again, love Zep my #3, but after Led Zep III, except for a few cuts they spiraled down to mediocrity.
Grego, and others: Did not revolutionize rock? I don’t know how else to say it. See my post below of Dylan’s quote, and “Satisfaction,” “Let’s Spend the Night Together” inspired all bands to evolve from “I want to Hold Your Hand.”
Sorry Grego, but you gotta let go my Eggo dude…heh heh heh.

MTW | 9/14/2009, 4:49 pm EST

I saw the real Stones in the 60’s and 70’s…they rocked! The Stones over the last 25 years have just been collecting pay checks. If you saw them when I did you would realize they are a far cry from what they were. I saw them for 5 bucks..all you chumps are paying hundreds to see a bunch of crap. Same with The Who and all the rest…hang it up! I give Robert Plant credit for sitting out the Viagra reunion tour circuit. If you had seen these bands with the original lineups in their prime you would then realize the garbage you are being sold today.

hugo | 9/14/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Well I saw the stones quite recently and I thought they were fantastic. The who, not so much. The who is little more than a shadow of its former self, it has been ever since Quadrophenia and then the loss of Moon, and then Entwistle. But the stones still rock as good as they ever did. I must admit I’m curious, due to all these rumours of a Kinks reunion if they’d still be up to their old standard. As for Zeppelin, they proved in 07 that they still out rock anybody and if they decided to come back they would conquer the world all over again. As for the stones, too many of you are looking at the stones as a legitimate working band. The stones are past that stage, they’ve done that and have now reached the level where they only have to put out an album once in a decade. But when they play live you are still seeing a top act and one of the best bands in the world. The stones are just as great, they’re just different. Try and enjoy them as they are and you will most likely not be dissapointed. Like I said before though I’d love to see the return of Zep!

brian jones | 9/15/2009, 5:30 pm EST

the stones are not kinks hugo!
they are fuckers, not kinks! they are kinky fuckers.

hugo | 9/15/2009, 8:01 pm EST

brian are you an completely ignorant idiot, The Kinks are a band from the british invasion that came out at the same time as the stones.

Rebel Yell | 9/16/2009, 6:02 pm EST

Jack White can hardly play in key of E, so what would he do with the Stones? Praying for Satisfaction so he can use his fuzz pedal?
I mean, it’s ridiculous. Why not Fred Durst or Hanna Montana?

Fabian | 9/20/2009, 11:41 pm EST

what about ron wood?
is he go on?

detroit | 9/26/2009, 1:27 am EST

I concur with some of the above posts. White is over-rated. Sure, he’s better than most of the crap that is out there currently, but that isn’t saying much. The guy really can’t play his instrument. He is good at deconstructed music because that is his level of musicianship. There are many many many unknowns, or even little knows that play far better than he does.

Stars and “genius” comes cheap these days.

BTW- The Stones stopped growing as a creative force after the Beatles broke up and had nobody to compete with or to steal ideas from. There were a couple bright spots in the 70s, but should have hung it up after Some Girls.

Ritchard | 9/27/2009, 5:10 pm EST

I went to see the Kiss concert at Cobo hall last night, the last ever and it was truly the greatest show I have ever seen. I was reminded of when I saw the stones a few years back, another great show, only Kiss pulled out all the theatrics so they kind of topped them. But still this is just my opinion keep in mind, the stones were a great band, and are a great band. The Stones did grow after the beatles broke up. In fact that’s really when they finally started to come into their own and really earn their place as one of the worlds greatest rock bands. now I say one of not thee because I don’t really think there is a worlds greatest rock band. Come on, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aerosmith, The stones, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, kiss, ac/dc, hendrix, etc. were all great in their own way and a lot of times comparisons are just stupid. Who’s better The Beatles or Led zeppelin. It’s like comparing steak to a bannana split. Both are great and impossible to fairly compare. That said, I do think of all the bands in history that the beatles had the biggest impact. But whether or not that makes them the greatest is silly, because of all the german leaders in history Hitler had the greatest impact, and look what an evil git he was. Impact, longevity, loudness, spectacle, enjoy them all. It doesn’t matter who reigns in rock and roll as long as rock and roll reigns. Jack white is a great guitar player and I think he would work well with the stones. It’s as simple as that. Some will like it, some will not. Others will still insist that the stones should have given it up long ago and that they don’t compare to other great bands. But you know what, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to listen to it, or go see the stones live, meanwhile I’ll be there having the time of my life.

Pete | 9/29/2009, 10:46 pm EST

Keith was THE koolest and hipist looking and playing dudester ever in the history of rock.
Too bad drugs had to take their toll eventually.
Rocks original bad boy, all followers can’t kompete. He probably influenced and shaped the Stones more than Mick.
While Mick played with dick (occasionally) Keith continued to party on only with Kun…well you know.
“Brian kinky Jones”, still waiting for your defense of the Bay City Rollers as rocks all-time greats, you shithead, you.

Brian Jones Rickenbacker | 9/30/2009, 7:48 pm EST

Stones went through phases. Early on they couldnt touch the Beatles because the beatles were very polished and very much a “studio” band, even before The Sgt. Pepper Days. But then again, they were a group that did Takes overdubs and such until the songs were as good as they could get.
Stones on the other hand, laid down tracks when and where they couldLondon,Chicago, Los Angeles) and never did albums AS Albums, perse. Just piecemeal compilations until about the Rubber Soul/Aftermath era.
Having said all that….The Stones were THE Balls-to-the-wall Rock group of the century.
Beatles…hands down best Studio Group, as well as being trailblazers in America when it counted, opening the door for so many other great acts and sounds.
But The Stones….man. Say what you will about past their prime.
A Bigger Bang was a very well-done album. Don Was…..Rick Rubin…
Jack White….i dont give a Flying
**** WHO is in the production seat
just if he can get the modern day
Muddy Waters’ to lay down a few more gems.
They wont be around forever, people. 200 years from now THEY will be the Mozarts to the Beatles
Beethoven.
Enjoy them while they are here and you lived in their time.

Henry | 10/5/2009, 8:53 pm EST

I think this is a good idea, but the one I’d really like to see White work with is Bob Dylan. Lately Dylan has put out some really great albums from 99-09 and wouldn’t it be cool to have Dylan singing with the white stripes, or the raconteurs backing him up.
it’d be great.

bonnie | 10/10/2009, 10:11 pm EST

i am thee number one fan of the stones. while they have done some stuff not up to snuff they learned from it. it was a stepping stone to greater things no one else dared to explore. that’s why the stones are the greatest band ever. they know it all. to hear them these days is like hearing heaven (and hell) rock-everybody .

Jan henriksen | 10/15/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Yeah folks, the greatest rock and roll band ever faced the earth, still rocking and swagging, and even give tribute to the greatest visionary poet rock artist Bob Dylan with a trilling cover of “like a Rolling Stone ” keep on rocking ol’dudes, Mick & Keith rules !!! Norway call upon another world Tour asap !!!!
