  • In the wake of DJ AM’s death of an apparent drug overdose, MTV hasn’t revealed whether they’ll air the Intervention-style reality show Adam Goldstein was working on before he died. EW has a synopsis of the premiere episode, in which AM aided a 20-year-old heroin addict and explained how eerie it felt to hold a crack pipe after so many years of recovery.

  • Cypress Hill’s Smokeout will be held October 23rd and 24th at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in San Bernardino, California. This year’s music and weed expo boasts Slipknot, the Deftones, Goodie Mob, the Geto Boys and an appearance by the reunited Sublime.
  • The Carpenters’ 40th anniversary will be marked with the double-disc 40/40, due October 20th. Richard Carpenter produced the set, which features 40 remastered tracks including two tracks released in 1983 after Karen Carpenter’s death, “Now” and “Your Baby Doesn’t Love You Anymore.”
  • New Order’s Bernard Sumner has confirmed his latest band Bad Lieutenant will release Never Cry Another Tear on October 6th. Blur’s Alex James and Joy Division/New Order drummer Stephen Morris guest on several tracks.

I would love to see The Geto Boys perform live! Smokeout sounds like a great lineup…

Lots of bands have ripped off New Order in the past. None, however, have done it quite this blatantly. That’s okay though, Bad Lieutenant have a pretty good excuse – they basically ARE New Order. As you may have read, New Order bassist, Peter Hook, left the band in a huff sometime in 2008. Apparently things hadn’t been great between Hooky and band members for a while, and the whole situation was all kinds of unpleasant. Upon leaving, he pronounced the band dead and, well, the remaining members seemed to agree. But rather than sulking about it, they went out and got Blur’s, Alex James, to join them on bass guitar and formed a new band – Bad Lieutenant.
The name may be different, the bass player may be different, but this sounds A LOT like New Order. Specifically, New Order-circa 1993’s Republic. That’s no bad thing. This is indie pop with just a hint of electronica running underneath the surface and the spirit of Manchester infused in its fibre. From the opening strains of Sink or Swim to the album’s conclusion, this is probably the best record New Order have made in the last 15 years.

Release date: 5 October 2009

1. Sink Or Swim
2. Twist Of Fate
3. Summer Days On Holiday
4. This Is Home
5. Running Out Of Luck
6. Dynamo
7. Poisonous Intent
8. These Changes
9. Walk On Silver Water
10. Shine Like the Sun
11. Runaway
12. Head Into Tomorrow
13. Falling Trees (Bonus Track)
14. Split the Atom (Bonus Track)

@Always Forever

I sure hope you’re wrong about it sounding like ‘Republic’, their least best album…fortunately Sink or Swim doesn’t sound remotely like anything on Republic.

Thanks for the shout-out regarding the Carpenters’ 40th Anniversary release, ‘20/20′.
Karen Carpenter’s supreme talent retains its luster 26 years after her passing.
