Tenacious D Battle the Devil to Wrap Up Outside Lands Fest

Beastie Boys replacement headliner Jack Black of mock rockers Tenacious D sent his love to the ill Adam Yauch Sunday night during a chilly set that closed out the final day of San Francisco’s Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park. “Adam, I love you, you’re the greatest,” said the charismatic Black, dripping with sweat from their 100-minute, skit-filled performance, which included a duel with the Devil. “Get well, my brother.”

The D — who said San Francisco hosted one of their first gigs as a band almost a decade ago — played to a few thousand stalwart fans braving 50-something degree evening lows and the misty ocean air. Drawing from their 2001 and 2006 albums Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny, the band opened at 7:40 p.m. with “Kielbasa,” drawing big crowd whoops. Another album opener, “Kickapoo,” followed, leading into Tenacious D’s first skit.

“I turned 40 years old this week, and I feel like I’m in the body of a 10 year old,” said Black, who began doing gymnastics. A stunt double performed several back handsprings and Kyle Gass denigrated such fakery. Black exploded, forcing Kyle to quit the band onstage. “Dude (I Totally Missed You)” brought Gass back for “Friendship.”

Though the band lip synced to “Master Exploder” lyrics “I do not need / a microphone / my voice is fuckin’ / powerful!” Black displayed surprising range and theatricality, and audience members rubbed sore jaws from smiling at the endless antics. The mirthful D deftly handled “Tribute” — the first single off their 2001 platinum debut — before dueling with the Devil, to whom they renounced allegiance.

“The devil fucking sucks. Fuck the devil. Jesus is awesome. The devil can suck my dick,” spat Black, who didn’t skimp on the expletives Sunday, later stating, “I wish I could fuck all of you. I can’t. That’s unreasonable. But I can try.”

An early encore brought the band back for “Fuck Her Gently,” proudly sung by both the men and women left in attendance, thus concluding day three of the second annual music and arts festival in Golden Gate Park.

Almost 100 bands drew in excess of 100,000, said Outside Lands organizer Rick Farman, co-founder of Bonnaroo presenters Superfly, who co-presented Outside Lands with Berkeley’s independent Another Planet Entertainment.
The loss of main headliner Beastie Boys at the last minute put the organizers in uncharted territory. “My first thought was, ‘My heart goes out to him,’ ” said Farman. “But yeah, we’ve never had a headline-level act drop out like that.”

Some fans were expectedly upset Tenacious D replaced the Beasties, and even Sunday performer M.I.A. took to Twitter last week, alluding that she would have backed out of opening for the D it weren’t for the threat of lawsuit. “When I went online the next day, though, there were as many people who were stoked to hear we had Tenacious D,” said Farman. “Jack Black doesn’t tour very much and we were very happy he stepped up.” Indeed, in the spirit of the date, Tenacious D souvenir T-shirts depicted Beastie Boys’ Check Your Head album cover with Black and Gass photoshopped in. The title read Check Your Headliner.

Though Sunday sales slackened, the healthy turnout was a testament to the resilience of music consumers amid the downturn, Farman said. The event leveraged San Francisco’s food, wine, technology and activism cultures to give festival-goers a one-of-a-kind, world-class experience. More than 100 local restaurants and wineries doled out low-cost delights like black truffle aoli with fries, and organic smores to go with the wine tastings. A first for the tech giant, YouTube Webcasted the festival and drew hundreds of thousands of viewers. Free water bottle refills, bike valet and ample municipal buses kept fans hydrated and happy.

Outside Lands will be back next year, says Farman. “We’re in it for the long term. We’re thinking in terms of decades.”

No disrespect to the Beastie Boy’s but I’d personally rather see Tenacious D.

The D are the greatest Rock and Roll band in the galaxy.
The should headline every festival.

M.I.A. should shut up. She’s lucky to be playing at all.

I came from tx just to see everyone at Outsidelands. MIA had people walking away all over the place; she really should step off her pedestool. Tenacious D was amazing and very entertaining with their theatrics and very personal interaction with the crowds. Second time to Outsidelands, can’t wait for festival # 3 next yr

Tenacious D were OK, but Ween far out-played and out-rocked them. Definitely Dean and Gene were the festival highlight.

I was almost gonna buy M.I.A.’s CD, but then I read her whining on Twitter so she gets NOTHING. YOU LOSE.

GOOD DAY SIR.

Sorry RS but you should officially take back giving MIA album of the year (08?)…her performance was terrible with several shout outs to the wrong city, drummers who obviously weren’t making the beats, and the two “dancers” awkwardly strumming Rockband guitars. The D was great, along with the other headliners DMB and Pearl Jam.

Why is everyone so bitter? I liked M.I.A.’s performance, she’s a kidder. Tenacious D are funny

I was delighted to see the D. They did not disappoint. However, I think that by quoting the organizer of the event, you are doing your readers a disservice. It’s been a while so forgive my ignorance regarding this. Without using quotation marks when quoting the promoter one could easily assume that the info. was made by an unbiased source or have some factual basis. Low cost delights…nope. Free water bottle refills…you could say that, I would say that there were not. Ample municipal buses…strike three. Maybe the third outsidelands will be the charm.

Outside Lands exceeded my expectations, and I will be back. It was a much more relaxing experience than Coachella. The setting is more beautiful, the food is better (and cheaper), and the people are more friendly. Definitely will be back next year. You’d have to drag me back to the desert for Coachella.

The festival was great! Wished there would have been someone playing opposite Tenacious D as on Friday and Saturday. Band of Horses were AMAZING and could have closed out the show better than TD!

Stevo | 9/5/2009, 4:08 pm EST

Note to Adrogynous! We came from out of town and had never been to San Fran. You’re sadly mistaken about all three. Food was great and reasonably priced. INFO was totally usable and relevant. Also there were plenty of Muni buses and alternative transport. The only mistake the promoters made was having Tenacious D close out the show. Other than that, The Festival was AMAZING!

Adrogynous | 9/7/2009, 1:36 pm EST

Note to Johnny Knoxville: I (we) came from out of town as well. Unfortunately, we came from a place where $8 for A Smore just isn’t reasonable. All of the food that I had was good and I’m sure the term low-cost was applicable to someone. I suppose I’m biased regarding the transpo. issue. The Bauer bus that we were on was from another company, that wasn’t a problem. The problem was that the driver received three personal phone calls while “driving”. (His phone was returned all the way across the isle to the front passenger seat between each call, for added excitement. I guess) I could go on about the sound system, stage, etc. but I’ll spare you. I’m impressed that you found the “INFO” useful, although I was curious for what purpose? Being that the show’s been over for quite some time. Was being the operative term because; whatever.
