M.I.A., Modest Mouse, The Dead Weather Heat Up Outside Lands

M.I.A. delivered a kicking and screaming Beastie Boys mash-up medley Sunday afternoon to tens of thousands at Outside Lands in San Francisco’s woodsy Golden Gate Park. Clad in a garish, gorgeous tiger print dress complete with blazing red tiger ear-shaped shoulder pads, black wayfarer sunglasses, black tights and bronzed sneakers, M.I.A. strutted in fine form, backed by two fly girls and twin, besuited b-boys. The Sri Lankan sprite spat bits of “Bird Flu” into the Beastie’s “Sabotage” and “Intergalactic,” blasting the last of the crowd off their picnic blankets. “Paper Planes” sailed into the closer position after a muted reception to “Born Free” a fast, punky, bass-heavy new song the audience failed to latch onto. “Sorry. Get to know it later,” M.I.A. said.

The new mother and sudden global star behind Kala and Arular seemed reflective Sunday afternoon. “A lot has changed in a year since I’ve been here. I got engaged here. I got pregnant here. I’m kind of fucking scared of this place.” Nevertheless, opening track “Bamboo Banga” and “World Town” had the hoodie and scarfed fans bouncing. Her latest rare performance since giving birth in February satiated new devotees with “Galang,” “Pull Up the People” “Bucky Done Gun” and “Boyz.”

Read about Tenacious D’s Sunday night headlining set.

Earlier on the main stage, jocular Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock brought his journeyman’s sensibility and twin drum kits to a midday set. Touring behind August EP No One’s First and You’re Next, he played the EP’s “The Whale Song,” but after 16 years and seven full-length LPs, the Seattle rock band drew greatly from the past. We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank’s “Parting of the Sensory” and Good News For People Who Love Bad News for “Blame It On the Tetons” came off flawlessly. “Paper Thin Walls” off The Moon and Antarctica seemed like an apt fit for the chilly afternoon.

Conversely, hot band of the summer the Dead Weather let loose a sexy, bluesy, bashing set, electrified by the rock micro-deity that is Jack White. Underneath a grey, purgatory sky, all eyes were on the black-clad rocker and his 2009 outfit, featuring femme fatale Alison Mosshart of the Kills vamping and channeling the robot rut of Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita and bassist Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs.

White handled the drums as if every note mattered on opener “60 Feet Tall” while petite Mosshart squared off on the sound monitors, all pelvis and snarl. Fertita sprayed cascades of distortion and squall during cuts from the band’s debut LP Horehound. “So Far From Your Weapon” and “I Cut Like A Buffalo” offered dirgy, gut-bucket blues straight from Nashville, and yelps from the crowd accompanied every move by White toward a guitar or microphone. He often sung while playing drums, and played guitar on fine numbers like “Treat Me Like Your Mother” and “Hang You From The Heavens.”

Jack White will go down in rock history as one of the greatest EVER! Period.

Beware the legions of Clapton loving old men who hate that Jack plays with abandon instead of from a chart coming here and spewing hatred. Screw you guys and get back in your wheelchair. I’m 40, and can tell you from a middle aged perspective that Jack White is the real deal. The VERY real deal.

Jack White is one of the finest modern songwriters out there. Every band project he develops is great. I’m definitely digging the Dead Weather LP, and hoping they’ll make their way down to FL.

The concert was a disaster. RS should call it what is is. Nothing like music in GG Park but the scalpers couldn’t give tickets away and it was empty inside. Outside, by Sunday, only the hippies were left hanging out listening to free music and half of them lived there. The private security that invaded the public park drove away everyone from the neighborhood entirely.

MIA was terrible… an embarrassment at every move that started well before the “big ups to Southern California”.

M.I.A. should shut the hell up. She’s lucky to even be a star like she is.

Saw Dead Weather in Denver – one of THE best shows I have EVER seen – this coming from a 43 year old; JW is AMAZINGLY talented!!! I look forward to seeing him again in whatever incarnation he rolls through with next time.

Modest Mouse AND The Dead Weather?

Wish I had been there. :/

Jack White is the closest you get perfection. That is, of course really not perfectionism, – but a massive wall of pure and real sound that is spontaneus and genious, in which wakes up every cell in your body from sleep and makes you feel alive. And he does it again and again and again and again, every year, and even sometimes several times a year…

Brilliant!

I saw the Dead Weather last Wednesday at the Mayan in L.A. Aside from seeing John C. Reilly backstage wearing a white gigolo outfit, they were amazing. Better than the Stripes live.

The 00 decade would´ve sucked BIG without Jack Withe

Jack White fans MUST watch the new movie out called It Might Get Loud. I saw it and it was nothing short of AWEsome in the true meaning of that word.

jack sure can rip.

Am I the only who has noticed that all of Jack White’s “projects” are basically the same exact sound and that with the exception of a cut or two from each record they are nothing special. Cord progressions are basic at best, lyrics are heinous, and the solo’s are dirty and amateur. It makes since for him and the edge to be in a movie together because both of them are extremely one dementional artists and neither should be whisper in the same breath with Jimmy Page.

Yo | 9/1/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Jack White = Jimmy Page.

Same breath.

Shawn | 9/1/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Jack may not be the greatest guitar player ever but he is one our generations great rock and roll performers. Everything he touches is gold. On stage there is no one better. In the studio he is genius. And as far as his playing, he is pretty goddamn good at everything I have seen him play. Long Live Jack!!!

Kiwi | 9/1/2009, 1:54 pm EST

To this dude: Am I the only who has noticed that all of Jack White’s “projects” are basically the same exact sound…And also call his stuff amateur? Clearly you haven’t seen him live, haven’t listened to much of his stuff or you just haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. That’s good though, instead of seeing him in stadiums we can still see him in clubs and theaters because the masses don’t get it…for now. Aside from all that though Jimmy Page (who he’s most often compared to) thinks he’s a brilliant player, but I guess Page is amateur too! I mean, what does HE know about guitar right?

Dead Weather | 9/1/2009, 5:43 pm EST

I have actually seen Jack White live and it actually made me dislike his music more. His performance was disjointed and awkward. He is no where near the caliber of player of Jimmy Page and it is almost ludicrous that you would even hint at that. As far as hearing his music and understanding it, I have listened to each of the albums he has worked on front to back and he is trying far too hard to be different.

Dead Weather | 9/1/2009, 5:45 pm EST

His music is consistently poorly produced and written. And you probably got your comparison of Jack White and Jimmy Page from RS magazine since pretty much everything White does RS fellates. There is a reason why he doesnt play stadiums…its because he cannot fill them.

Weegie | 9/2/2009, 1:48 am EST

Jacks naysayers are mookies who think of him as “alternative” and have never even listened to anything he’s produced ;)

Kiwi | 9/3/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Hey Dead Weather. You don’t like him? Your choice. But interesting that you’ve listened front to back to at least NINE albums from a guy that you dislike and call an amateur. Regardless, you’re not arguing with me. I’m just a random dude. You’re arguing with Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Pete Townsend, all of which have praised him. He and Keith are recording together right now by the way.

taint | 9/5/2009, 11:44 am EST

jack played drums on the treat me like your mother and hang you from the heavens. he’s talented, but not talented enough to also play the guitar AT THE SAME TIME as you suggest.
