More details have emerged regarding the shocking, sudden death of Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, who was found dead in his New York apartment August 28th. Friends first became concerned that something was wrong when AM missed his flight from New York to Las Vegas, where he was booked to perform his weekly set at the Palms Hotel’s Rain nightclub, People reports. Goldstein sent his last text message to two friends at roughly 1 a.m. Friday morning regarding the Vegas performance. (The Palms, in tribute to Goldstein, blacked out the “P,” “L” and “S” on their sign so that it simply read “AM.”)

As Rock Daily previously reported, after the NYPD broke down the door, police found Goldstein dead in bed, with a crack pipe and prescription pills nearby. According to People, a half bag of crack cocaine was also recovered from Goldstein’s apartment. There were no signs of foul play, and an initial autopsy yielded inconclusive results. A toxicology report will take several weeks.

See pictures of DJ AM with Travis Barker, Fergie, Jay-Z and more.

After more than a decade of clean living, DJ AM reportedly developed a dependency to prescriptions like Xanax and benzodiazepines last year while recovering from the jet crash he and Travis Barker survived. According to TMZ, while the Xanax was used to calm Goldstein’s post-traumatic stress after the crash, the benzodiazepines are what set off AM’s relapse. TMZ adds that AM’s relapse was recent and that it had “nothing to do with AM’s breakup” with girlfriend Hayley Wood. AM’s death is also reportedly considered an accidental overdose and not a suicide.

Look back at more musicians lost before their time.

Meanwhile, the fate of AM’s MTV reality show Gone Too Far remains uncertain after his death, Variety reports. Filming recently finished on the eight-episode series, an Intervention-like show which found Goldstein helping young people who were struggling with drug addiction. Gone Too Far was to premiere October 5th. MTV is expected to make a decision regarding the show this week. According to People, it was during filming Gone Too Far that AM held a crack pipe for the first time since his addiction.

As Rock Daily previously reported, countless celebrities from John Mayer to ?uestlove paid tribute to AM either through statements or on Twitter. AM’s good friend Barker and his Blink-182 bandmates persevered through their grief during their concert in Hartford, asking fans to give a moment of silence during their tear-soaked set.

Relapse is such a horrible thing when it happens no matter who it happens to whether its someone who is well known to the struggling individual just living the day to day— i currently have just over two years clean and live with the knowledge that one relapse/one slip will be what takes me to despair andlikely death– rip adam

Catherine | 8/31/2009, 11:10 am EST

Man, I still don’t get why people do drugs. They are obviously not good for anybody, plus if you have the “addictive-type” of personality, why would you?

There are so many ways to have fun w/o even entertaining the idea! To each his/her own but seriously I don’t understand this society of drugs and excess…

VoiceOfReason | 8/31/2009, 11:42 am EST

All you stupid sheep… you all have a bunch of drinking and drug buddies (not friends) then you sit there and mourn yourselves (not the dead) when someone finally does him/herself in.

Grow the F**K up.

it is not drugs | 8/31/2009, 11:57 am EST

these deaths, including M Jackson have nothing to do with drugs—these individuals are self medicating themselves—playing doctor—–instead of letting someone who knows what they are doing taking care of them—they are on a ridiculous power trip to death and destruction—find a health partner or you can die

Pher | 8/31/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Catherine,

People with addictive personalities don’t just get addicted to drugs. As AM has said, he also struggled with food addiction. His medical need for pain management lead to his relapse of his “drug of choice,” which was crack. A fundamental biological drive (some say an off-kilter drive for “survival”) triggered his “cravings,” and he relapsed. What a tragedy.

Like Penny, I, too, have nearly two years clean. The fear of relapse is very real, and not just for my “drug of choice” (alcohol). Like AM, I struggle with food and lots of other things. Sobriety is about more than simply “not using.” It’s a daily struggle to try to live, when my body and mind tell me that I need a “foreign” substance to feel normal. That per se craving never fully recedes. I’m guessing DJ AM’s stuggle was very similar, which is why he so frequently reached out to others with drug problems.

It’s not about “simple excess” for so many of these people. It’s about a genetic anomaly, social conditioning and body chemistry.

So, so sad. DJ AM will is missed.

Pher | 8/31/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Hey, VoiceOfReason. Please speak only for yourself.

Many of us very much relate to the plight of AM, probably in more ways than you are capable. AM’s life was one of struggle — and in many ways, a life of repeated victory despite seemingly insurmountable odds. AM was a fighter, and his life touched many, many people.

Take your own advice, dude. Your lack of empathy isn’t uncommon in people who have no knowledge of addiction … and your attitude only showcases your profound ignorance.

DORF | 8/31/2009, 12:36 pm EST

It’s a tragedy what happened, but what was so popular about this guy? All he did was make a living off other people’s music.

VoiceOfReason | 8/31/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Hey Pher,

Save your false sense of romanticism of his life and people like his for the celebrity sheep and their followers who think being a mess is hip and cool. We all have problems and stuggles; stop playing the mindless martyr.

Like I said, grow up…

The Transoniq One | 8/31/2009, 1:13 pm EST

Doesn’t look like he was following a program since the burns he sustained in the crash. Poor bastard – bought himself about a year of being high as opposed to a humble, sober LIFE TIME – ONE DAY AT A TIME…it’s tough being a junkie, lawd knows the shit I’ve gone through…I respect all who at least try to change and make those baby steps toward a meaningful recovery. Peace.

Sherrill | 8/31/2009, 1:18 pm EST

DORF,

AM was one of the best club DJ’s living today. He did way more than make a living off playing other peoples music.

DJ’ing is an art form and not anyone can do it as great as he did. I’m not going to sit here and explain how difficult the job is. The normal everyday person won’t understand the difficulty of getting a room of people to go crazy and dance. You should try it, and then come post here after you KILL the dancefloor.

Joe the American | 8/31/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Sherrill said “DJ’ing is an art form and not anyone can do it as great as he did…The normal everyday person won’t understand the difficulty of getting a room of people to go crazy and dance.”

Art form? That’s like saying somebody is a great talent because they show other people’s clothes.

Let’s get a grip people, entertaining is one thing, but merely playing songs is neither a talent nor an art form.

So this is how far society has sunk…when a person who plays CDs is considered an artist. Sad. Very Sad.

Repeat Offender | 8/31/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Nothing new about another drug death. It’s the idiots/friends that surround these addicts…recovering or not. THEY know, their doc’s KNOW they’ve got an addiction problem BUT they’re too dazzled by their fame to say NO or force them into rehab or treatment.
Doesn’t matter if he was a DJ or street sweeper: just another senseless waste.
This guy’s “FRIENDS” and the prescribing docs ought be weighted down with plenty of guilt! It’s THEIR fault!

A Famous DJ | 8/31/2009, 2:06 pm EST

DJ’ing WAS an art when DJ’s played music from vinyl, mixing two pieces of “made for DJ’s” records, into a solid and provocative new composition.

COmputer DJ’ing, like AM, Smanatha Ronson, etc takes no skill, no artistry… It is simply burning music to your computer, putting it in the program, and clicking a mouse where you want one “record” to start playing, and the other to stop. The overlap of the songs is no longer an art, it is just that, an overlap of songs at the same tempo.

It used to be so much more. It is sad what computers did to DJ’ing.

AM was a juke-box who became a famous DJ for dating Nicole Ritchie. Before that, and for the most part to today, he NEVER played an event with REAL DJ’s. He played clubs where people who read gossip mags and websites recognize his name and frequent.

Real DJ’s

Kool Herc

Scott La Rock
Jam Master Jay
Mix Master Mike
Grand Wizard Theodore
DJ Red Alert
Eric B.
Terminator X

and many more.

DJ AM has no place on this list. However, if there were one for “Douches who stood behind turntables hoping to catch some anorexic twat” then he would be in the top 5.

Yep. For addictive-OCD type personalities, exercise can kill and seriously damage health, too. Trust me. I’m speaking from experience. THERE IS NO CURE FOR THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION. THERE IS ONLY MANAGEMENT. It’s sad but it’s true.

Pher | 8/31/2009, 3:53 pm EST

VoiceOfReason … Do whatever you want. Your lack of knowledge and refusal to educate yourself may end up killing someone close to you.

Your serenity is YOUR problem. Not mine. Or anyone else’s for that matter. Judge. Judge. Judge. Ha ha. Whatever. I pray for people like you to grow a heart.

Peace.

curmudgeon | 8/31/2009, 4:13 pm EST

I like the “Half Bag of crack.” Is that a hip-hop group? How did they know it was a half bag? “Hey, half this crack is gone.”

I gotta go take half a shit.

80808 | 8/31/2009, 4:14 pm EST

I think the 12-step attitude promotes a ‘helpless victim’ mentality, where they brainwash you into thinking you’re unable to get through life without the support of a 12-step group and following their principles with the zeal of a cult member.

Its been shown that 12-step programs are no more effective then quitting on your own – cold turkey.

Solomon | 8/31/2009, 4:14 pm EST

Seems like Pher and VofR need to go get a drink and talk their differences out a bit instead of ragging back and forth in the comments.

Star Padilla | 8/31/2009, 4:57 pm EST

I didn’t have the opportunity to know him on a personal basis. But did meet with him numerous times via work/media and he was quite the character and passionate individual. I still can’t wrap my head around what has happened, but I send my deepest condolences to his family and close friends, as we’ve lost an amazing guy who will never be forgotten.

I pray that people like you use, not abuse your BRAIN.

Nathan | 8/31/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Kinda unfortunate that the only time this guy made headlines was when he was almost killed in a plane crash and now having overdosed on crack, he was also some kind of DJ, right?

Music lover | 8/31/2009, 9:30 pm EST

Who cares that some no-talent crackhead hack died?
Boo hoo: a man who contributed little to this world and even less to music died by his own hand. Let’s all cry for his non-existent legacy.

JUST SOME GUY | 8/31/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Dj Am
Was a sick dj
people wanna make list of dj’s from 100 years ago…cool..no one knows who they are…
and as far as what computers have done to djing…taking away from the”art form” statements like that go to show how much you dont know about djing…figure it out…

DJ A.M.'s Dealer | 8/31/2009, 11:31 pm EST

He was a crackhead and nothing more. Stupid junky should have gotten his life together, it’s his own fault he’s dead, accidental overdose my ass, he purposely killed himself.

ruben | 8/31/2009, 11:39 pm EST

its a shame he passed away… nobody likes to see a human life pass away like that… but the truth of the matter is the only reason he was known as a DJ was because of his involment with Nicole… the gentleman had no real talent… as far as i know he never spun at places where your music tecnique and selection has to be on point… like IBIZA, MARBELLA, PUNTA DEL ESTE etc… VEGAS??? anybody can spin at vegas.. but to say you have a residency in MARABELLA, Spain in the summer with the big boys, now that’s impresive.. i guess you could say he was the Britney Spears of DJing.. no substance, just lots of marketing…

amanduuuh | 8/31/2009, 11:46 pm EST

Plur (peace love unity respect)
For those of you that didn’t know.
Have a heart. Who cares if he was smoking crack. Your just judging a book by its cover. It was his body and his life. The sad part is the families loss and you pricks sit here and talk shit. If his death or music doesn’t matter to you go read something else. Don’t put you energy into putting bad energy in here.
Rip dj am
And rot in hell to all the haters

Wow | 9/1/2009, 12:05 am EST

Glorifying a crack-head DJ with no musical legacy. I wonder how many people have unfortunately passed away today who once served our country gloriously in one of the wars that allow us to live our lives the way we please. A junkie who spun records of other people’s music…wow..

A Famous DJ | 9/1/2009, 3:19 am EST

Sorry “Just Some Guy”… But we joke about the places we play that only have a CD/Computer Setup. We get paid to have our laptop play music just to put our names on the flyer. It’s a joke. We all do it because we have to sometimes…But you won’t catch most of us at a real gig with our macbook pro sitting dead center using final scratch. That’s embarrassing, and when we do that, we just sit there talking to each other and drink pints waiting to get paid.

The really bad DJ’s (like AM and Ronson) can’t even use final scratch, they fake – fake mixing… Pretending to do something while there computer plays the set they made on their computer the week before. They can’t even beat match. So yeah, it’s sad that DJ’ing got ruined by computers.

Peace Brother Jerome Watkins | 9/1/2009, 9:04 am EST

yooooooo, this guy was just a strung out drug addict!!!
wut you want? . .a heroes funeral like Ted Kennedy, for this former piece of garbage?
Those assholes from Blink cancelled out their concert on me cause of this, well guess what, I am a lawyer, and I will b suing them, and anyone else that makes disparing remarks about me-Brutha J

Umm | 9/1/2009, 10:27 am EST

DJ’s are not musicians. Sorry. They are just not.

Relapse my ass, there is a light switch in everyones house, it’s up to them to turn it OFF or ON.
It is pure logic that’s missing in these peoples lives and yet they are surounded by technology that tells them the consiquences of a bad decision in a fraction of a second. for you who don’t get it,it means…MAKE THE RITE CHOICE!!!!

Oje | 9/1/2009, 11:47 am EST

So he smoked crack with prescription drugs and died? Wow, big shock there. By all means smoke all the crack you want, its your life but dont expect me to feel bad when you die from it.

Idiot Brother Jerome Watkins | 9/1/2009, 12:03 pm EST

It’s a shame when ANYONE dies regardless of the way it happened. Peace Brother Jerome Watkins, I’ll guarantee that you’re not a lawyer and it’s pitiful that you put your own need to go to a show over the need of Blink 182 to grieve for a friend. You’re an idiot. Please try to sue me.

Really? | 9/1/2009, 1:47 pm EST

to those who is dissing on DJ AM please think for a second that he had just passed on and then put yourselves in the shoes of his friends and family. So what if he is an addict? sometimes people can’t help it, that’s why it’s call a “problem”, an “addiction.”
Lay off people’s lives!! if you got nothing good to say DON’T say anything at all, instead of talking smack about someone who OD go to the gym and workout that pudge. You people act like you have never met anyone who is an addict or has problems.

DORF | 9/1/2009, 3:43 pm EST

It would be really sad for the music business if this dude’s death gets more attention than Les Paul’s. It certainly is too bad what happened to DJ AM (love him or hate him, he was still a human being), and my condolences do go out to his family/friends, but as far as the music business goes, somebody who completely revolutionized the electric guitar and the way it was played and recorded is far more relevant than somebody who played other people’s music for a living.

Wiz007 | 9/1/2009, 5:22 pm EST

he was the best ! sadly he lost his life! all miss the good music he had! also travis my prayers are wit u!

DJ AM was a person. He was a son, friend, brother, cousin, and a person. God loves all people, even if they are crackheads.

J | 9/3/2009, 3:02 pm EST

r.i.p adam.
i’m pretty sure most people who have commented on this post with something harsh are forgetting that, yeah he might have been a drug user but he’s also someones family. have some respect at times like this for the ones who loved him. if you don’t have something good to say then don’t open your mouth and start talking shit.
it would have been a different story if he was your family i’m sure…
