Noel Gallagher Quits Oasis With “Great Relief”

Oasis canceled an appearance at a French music festival Friday night after a fight between the Brothers Gallagher, and it seems that guitarist Noel Gallagher has quit the band he helped form in 1991 — again. Before the band’s scheduled set time, one of the festival’s organizers announced to the crowd that Liam and his sibling had “had a fight backstage,” and, according to reports, that “the group no longer exists. They will not play tonight and they are canceling the rest of their European tour.”

The BBC is reporting the split as official on their Website, and that it was Noel who indeed left. In a statement posted to the band’s MySpace page, Noel says he could no longer work with his brother.

“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” the statement reads. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer. Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz, and Milan,” he added, referring to the remaining stops on the band’s trek.

According to reports, the crowd at first took the stage announcement as a joke, until screens at both sides of the stage showed the message “As a result of an altercation within the band, the Oasis gig has been canceled.”

Ironically, Noel walked out of an Oasis gig in Paris nine years ago, temporarily derailing a world tour in 2000. Last year, before the band launched a tour with Ryan Adams, Noel Gallagher told RS, “I am fucking brilliant every night I go out there.”

Rolling Stone was right there with Oasis when they opened that tour — check out backstage and live shots from the California gig here.

Doin' alright | 8/28/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Not really shocking at all considering Liam is one of the biggest pricks music has ever seen, and I don’t blame anyone for not having the tolerance to put up with him. And this isn’t the first time Noel has complained about Liam being too much to handle. Oasis should call it quits FOR GOOD. I appreciate them trying to make work for the sake of the music, but it’s overwhelmingly clear that this just isn’t meant to be. They need to stop trying. Hopefully Noel and Liam won’t choke each other to death before they realize that.

mike | 8/28/2009, 7:10 pm EST

I guess they never will surpass the beatles then eh?

Noel | 8/28/2009, 7:12 pm EST

Little git.

kilgoretrout321 | 8/28/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Good.

I know I’m not the first or last to say Oasis sucks. They put out some good songs and one or maybe two passable albums, but their whole sound is a total rip-off of anything that was good (esp. the Beatles), and in addition to this, they also suck. I hate them more than Sarah Palin and though I won’t be surprised if they get back together since Noel will likely miss the camaraderie (aka massive paycheck) I’m presently satisfied with the current state of affairs for this awful band.

And Oasis lovers: Buzz off. You’ve squandered too much love on a couple of retarded punks.

Noel Fan | 8/28/2009, 7:14 pm EST

Can we finally get the Noel solo album now?!?!

Spirry | 8/28/2009, 7:14 pm EST

These two are such a pair of drama queens… although, from what little I’ve heard about Liam Gallagher, I don’t think I’d be able to stomach working with him either.

thegratefulone | 8/28/2009, 7:15 pm EST

i literally just finished reading the Why The Beatles Broke Up article and signed on to read this.

RICK | 8/28/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Why quit? It’s Noel’s band. Just fire Liam.

LOL | 8/28/2009, 7:16 pm EST

I saw em 5 times, epic band. It’s great they have quit, at least I can stop spending my money on their shit new albums hoping for a re-birth of brilliance. I can say they are truly one of the last bands I actually popped to buy a new CD. Now they can fuck off, they are rich, they don’t care. Its clearly not about the music.

jose | 8/28/2009, 7:17 pm EST

terrible

Anonymous | 8/28/2009, 7:17 pm EST

noooooooooo. this will tide over, i’m sure of it. cmon, they’re just two dramaqueens who’ve make shit awesome music all this while

NOEL GALLAGHER IS OASIS

JACK | 8/28/2009, 7:26 pm EST

BRILLIANT

Daniel | 8/28/2009, 7:26 pm EST

A good band – but overrated, nothing spectacular – most of what they do has been done before and far better.

Kids in a sand box … these two are dumb …. somehow they’ve made it work and made tons o’money ….

we’re the fools, I guess.

Steeves | 8/28/2009, 7:31 pm EST

We have seen the band three times and could never understand the enigma; they are almost completely inert! And it is no secret to any Oasis fan that they are heavily Beatle infused. Given all that, I would disagree with those who criticize their oeuvre without really digging into it. They can write and play a hooky pop tune (and other genres as well) like the best of them and their concerts are unjustifiably entertaining. They are (were? really?) pretty much my favorite pop band and I’m not ashamed at all to say it. If you haven’t given Heathen Chemistry a serious listen or two, please try and hold your negative opinions.

Me | 8/28/2009, 7:33 pm EST

I stopped being an Oasis fan when they started pulling in session musicians but i’ve never stopped being a Noel Gallagher fan.

Fuck Liam.

Get the solo album out NOELIE NOELIE!

Daniel | 8/28/2009, 7:36 pm EST

They are both morons

Joe | 8/28/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Im disappointed but not suprised. Hopefully we’ll now get a Noel solo album. Oasis had their moment in the sun and their time has passed. What are the odds there’ll be a reunion tour in 5 years?

Eurythmics | 8/28/2009, 7:39 pm EST

Thorn in my side
You know that’s all you ever were
A bundle of lies, you know that’s all that it was worth
I should have known better, but I trusted you at first
I should have known better, but I got what I deserved
To run away from you (run, run, run)
Was all that I could do
To run away from you (run, run, run)
Was all that I could do
To run away from you (run, run, run)
Was all that I could do
Thorn in my side, you know that’s all you’ll ever be
So don’t think you know better, cause that’s what you mean to me
I was feeling complicated, I was feeling low
Now every time I think of you, I shiver to the bone

Look for Noel to cover that song on his solo album and dedicate it to his brother Liam.

yawn... | 8/28/2009, 7:41 pm EST

Anonymous | 8/28/2009, 7:41 pm EST

No!!! Name me a better rockin’ love song than Slide Away? Anyone?

These guys are brilliant.

Kevin the Robot | 8/28/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Noel quits Oasis… for as long as his bank account will let him, then they’ll be back for another tour and album.

sleep | 8/28/2009, 7:44 pm EST

It’s not as big of a deal as it would have been 10 years ago, as the rest of the band write songs now too. It will be interesting to see what they can do with the ball in their court, or if any of them will follow Noel out.

I don’t know who owns the trademarks, but Liam was the original founder of the band in 1991 and Noel joined a year later.

Joe | 8/28/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Oasis is still around? Really, who gives a (bleep)?

Noel's Coke Nose | 8/28/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Waaa, waaa, waaa, they rip off The Beatles. That complaint is so old, it farts dust. Take a look at half the bands out there today…they all sound like SOMEONE. So what if Noel loves The Beatles…there are worse bands to model yourself after. Would they be better if they ripped off Herb Alpert?

Ethan | 8/28/2009, 7:49 pm EST

For those who hate Oasis or say “who cares”…. they have sold more albums worldwide than most bands will EVER in their lifetime. People care, as you can see from the album sales, and Oasis is relevant in music history. Deal with it.

Katie | 8/28/2009, 7:51 pm EST

They’ll probably end up “making up” like they did when Noel left in ‘94 and in ‘00. Or this could be the real thing. All I know is that I’m sad and even though their music isn’t up to their best standards of ‘94-96, they’re still one of the better bands out there who know what true talent really is. What do you call all of these little acts popping out today? Yes, they’ve had their arguments and yes they’ve had not-so-great albums, but they’re still Oasis.

Mike | 8/28/2009, 8:08 pm EST

I’m just as bummed about this as anyone but saying Noel IRONICALLY walked out of a gig in Paris 9 years earlier is completely incorrect. He COINCIDENTALLY walked out. You and the editor clearly do not know the meaning of the word ironically. FAIL.

luke | 8/28/2009, 8:10 pm EST

joe,

apparently you care, you are here commenting. Idiot

It’s really sad – I fell in love with Oasis’ music after listening to Champagne Supernova a year ago, and I’ve always wanted to see them live. Damn, I guess I’ll cross fingers for a reunion tour. btw Oasis haters need to shut the f*ck up, you don’t need to kick oasis fans when they’re down.

kinkajou | 8/28/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Such a shame. Throughout rock and roll sibling arguments have fuelled some of the great ones, such as The Everly Brothers and The Beach Boys and their differences have contributed to the success of the bands concerned. If this is the end, (which this time it appears to be), then their body of work over 15 years is strong enough to last the test of time certainly longer than many of their Britpop contemporaries; also, more importantly, this signals the death of the last great British working glass group of this era. It could have all been so different.

jamesb | 8/28/2009, 8:38 pm EST

who cares? they’re yesterday’s news anyway.

hahaha | 8/28/2009, 8:50 pm EST

I have been an Oasis since I was a little nipper now I,m 19 I always wanted to see them years ago but I was to young I finally saw them in Cardiff last year and this year to they were brilliant,I’m gutted this has happend maybe its not true but if it is Noel will hopefull release a solo album with Ian Brown and Liam with carry on with Pretty Green.

Bravo to Noel! Let’s hope he sticks with it this time. He’s the only talent in that band. He wrties good songs and he doesn’t need his brother at this point. Liam cant sing anyway!

the last rock n roll band out of britain, its a sad day for the british music industry. irrelevant ?? this story is on every sky news channel, cnn, fox included, we’re now officially left with coldplay as our biggest band…. thats a depressing fact

Stu | 8/28/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Glad I caught them at Virgin Fest last year!

Jimmy Page | 8/28/2009, 9:23 pm EST

its a sad day for every1 who loves music ,,, noel is an insperation to so many people,, he is got to be one of the most talented song writters of all time ,,, the people who say they arent as good as they used to be well which other brittish band could bring out an album after nearly 15 years and still go to No,1 u said it ,, oasis

thunderroadsupernova | 8/28/2009, 9:37 pm EST

its a sad day for rock n roll with out a doubt the most important band to come out of england in the last 25-30 years. the entire british music scene owes them a huge debt of gratitude for there success in the states. thank you for the 15 yrs i been a fan thank you for the countless show ive seen and traveled to. im upset but wouldnt be shocked if there back. they were the soundtrack to my life and many others and to me they brought back rock n roll in the 90’s. good luck lads cant wait for noels solo record. and today is the first day in a long time im almost giving up on rock n roll cheers!!!

Nate | 8/28/2009, 9:43 pm EST

Oasis weren’t the Beatles in a good way. Less polish, more swagger and for the record I think the last two Oasis albums were way underrated. Sure, they made anything better than the first three, but they were nearly perfect and the bar was set so high. Most polls from Britain say that Definitely Maybe is the best album of all time. Most Americans never enjoyed later Oasis songs because they were never marketed in the states. By the way RS, you never gave Oasis any love, shame on you. That is all.

L.G Faver | 8/28/2009, 9:44 pm EST

perhaps the last great rockNroll band.
What is there left now? Nickelback? Coldplay? Fallout Boy? are you kidding me!?
there’s a couple of good young bands out there(KOL, THe Killers) but they don’t even come close the genius Oasis produced. If this is truly the end of Oasis, today is a very sad day for music in general.

Fick | 8/28/2009, 9:56 pm EST

I loved Dig Out Your Soul. Possibly my favorite album they ever made. Which is high praise cause I think all their albums are great minus Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants.

I’m not too worried about them reuniting. They might have already done so by the time I finish this.

by the way, I’m going to invoke my massive nerdiness but, how right on were the makers of ‘Lost’ when they crafted Charlie and his brothers relationship to mimic that of Oasis? It couldnt be more realistic. They might as well named both character Noel and Liam.

Dont fret Oasis fans, theyll be back.

So What | 8/28/2009, 10:03 pm EST

I Like the music. I own the albums.
But I can’t think of a bigger douchebag than Noel Galagher.
You can’t finish a tour!!
Why don’t you personally tell anyone who bought tickets that you could care less.
Overated and an egomaniac!
Do us all a favor and never return to the music scene. What a coward.

oasisfan | 8/28/2009, 10:14 pm EST

oasis is one of the best bands of the past 25 years, if not all time! Noel is a genius! F**k u oasis haters! If you don’t like OASIS then don’t read the article and post a retarded comment. This is a sad day for oasis fans and for music!

Dork Snort | 8/28/2009, 10:17 pm EST

Oasis was touring? I thought they broke up years ago. Vegas awaits if they patch things up…

tbonespop | 8/28/2009, 10:17 pm EST

Truly a sad day for music any way you look at it. People that have been to an Oasis show understand what the band is about…music. The music always ruled with this band. Hopefully this is not the real end but I wouldn’t be surprised if they never played together again. Stubborn assholes.

longtimeoasisfan | 8/28/2009, 10:22 pm EST

As a long time Oasis fan, I’m not worried. This has happened many times and even if he does leave permanently, we’ll finally get that solo record from Noel. Liam’s voice is so shot he sounds like he should be singing for The Sex Pistols, rather than Oasis. By the way, DOYS is a kick-ass album so don’t tell me they are past their expiry date.

andrew | 8/28/2009, 10:30 pm EST

I can’t Noel at his word. H bickers and quits all the time only to come back and release another solid album.

Noasis | 8/28/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Good riddance, you limey douchebags!

Ray | 8/28/2009, 11:06 pm EST

This hardly ranks up there with McCartney quitting the Beatles. This is no big deal. Oasis was just another band (like KISS) who thought more of themselves than fans ever did.

jays5672 | 8/28/2009, 11:11 pm EST

I agree with some of what I’m reading on here. Seems to me the last song I enjoyed by this band was “Stop Crying Your Heart Out”. But even that album and the one to come after that (and some before) weren’t that great. I’m sorry to say that a once-great band probably won’t go missed very badly.

Repetitive | 8/28/2009, 11:18 pm EST

Uh, this was news about 15 years ago!

AlAl | 8/28/2009, 11:22 pm EST

Well all the comments here prove they were still relevant and people do care one way or another. Id be interested to see some solo work from noel. He did a brilliant mtv unplugged while liam heckled him from a balcony and is definatley one of the best songwriters going around. Dig out your soul was a cool album – their best in years. Liam has got a great voice but cant write for shit

Bonzaootituttifrutti | 8/28/2009, 11:33 pm EST

If this is the end of the ’sis then it is a sad day. Although they maybe never surpassed the likes of definately maybe or morning glory, they still produced some fantastic albums that most bands would trade their right arm for. In fact most bands would kill for an album of oasis’ b-sides! As for all the “they ripped of the beatles” comments; which band isnt influenced by someone? it just so happens the beatles influenced oasis and they have never denied it, wearing their influences on their sleeves. If the only complaint someone has about oasis is that they try to sound like the beatles (arguably the greatest rock n roll band ever)then its them that have the problem, not oasis. There are currently no bands around that have had the same impact on british music that oasis have, bar perhaps U2 (and when i say that, that includes radiohead, coldplay, etc, who i am a fan of). As for all the people that are abusive and say theyre brats, spoiled etc, noone knows but them what goes on behind closed doors, so who are you to judge or comment on their behaviour or actions? Shame on you. Finally for all the people that have came on simply to say “good riddance, they were crap anyway” then you intimate you are not a real music fan. There are certainly artists that are not my cup of tea, but i would never come out with an abusive comment about a band that millions of people love and that have been touched by their music. Shame on you also. Oasis has for years soundtracked my life and will be a band i will always adore. Good luck guys with whatever you do…rant over.

Oasis is the best band of the past 30 years. Doesn’t matter who they are all that matters is that don’t beleive the truth and dig out your soul are the two best albums of the last thirty years. Don’t give a shit who disagrees with that. it’s proper rock n roll. they had a couple un-solid albums before those 2 but fuckme don’t beleive the truth is the best rock record to come out in ages. Give it a chance you’ll see. No they don’t sound like morning glory anymore that was refreshing. I’m american by the way. Rolling Stone, You’ve sucked for so long now. I’m sure you got another jonas brothers filled issue in the works as we speak. Long Live Rock.

Shaun Fletcher | 8/29/2009, 12:50 am EST

Why should Noel leave the band….he’s the creative force behind nearly everything they do. Remember MTV unplugged when Liam threw his teddy out the pram and Noel sang everything. Get rid of Liam i reckon and let Noel do the rest…………..Live Forever.

Sad news. The rumor is that their other brother will leave his current gig and join the band to finish the rest of the dates. Not as good on guitar as Noel, but it’s hilarious when he smashes the watermelon during Half the World Away. I think he shaved his mustache as well to look more like Noel.

Love It | 8/29/2009, 2:09 am EST

Gotta love the “Who”? comments and “so what”? I guess you need for a band to be popular for you to like them. Listen to Dig Out Your Soul. It’s fucking awesome. They’re better than 90% of the other bands out there today.

You Wanna Hear Derivative? | 8/29/2009, 2:16 am EST

Listen to the new Green Day song; it’s “Heart of Gold” and it makes me ill how nobody notices but when a band is actually honest and says “yeah I love that band and they are influential and inspirational to me” then all of the sudden they are ‘rip off artists’. Why is it that so many people need to be told what is cool and what isn’t and can’t decide for themselves? Why is it ‘rock and roll’ to be humble when you don’t really feel that way. Oasis are the one band that aren’t the least bit fake. They say what they mean and don’t give a fuck what you think and THAT is rock and roll. I’m sick of all of this “oh we’re so lucky and so happy to be here” blah blah blah. Fuck that. I want real music. America’s rock and roll is now defined by the Jonas Brothers; the bar has never been lower. I wish we had another Oasis come along with great songs and a real attitude.

Anonymous | 8/29/2009, 2:28 am EST

good! noel should of gone solo after be here now! liam has no talent whatsoever! noel will be awesome on his own! lets face it. liams crap live these days. from a true oasis fan! definitely maybe made me pick up a guitar! thanks noel! LIVE FOREVER!!

people might knock oasis for not selling albums like that slut britney spears, but they are(were) a huge band…noel was the band..if you’ve ever listened to the mtv unplugged that was recorded years ago you would hear what oasis should’ve sounded like.

its probably for the better they broke up, maybe noel will be able to release the mtv performance as well as other solo albums

Live Forever. | 8/29/2009, 4:07 am EST

i saw this coming. as soon as they bailed on V festival last week i had a feeling this would soon follow. gutted.
if this really does happen, permanently…then i will melt and die. My Oasis lyric tattoo booking next week shall still take place before my life is over.

Anonymous | 8/29/2009, 4:10 am EST

1991..2009 never again will there be a better band!

thank god | 8/29/2009, 4:24 am EST

thank god oasis are over. They sucked balls anyway. The only difference between their albums is the artwork.

steven | 8/29/2009, 4:33 am EST

well thats oasis done with now for ricky hatton, bez and the man united squad. no seriously now, oasis will return at some point. liam will come crawling back when the clothes fail

MATT | 8/29/2009, 4:49 am EST

Great Band in the 1990’s. Crap Now Does Anyone Care The Split.

Calum | 8/29/2009, 4:54 am EST

Noel could easily go on to make it as a solo artist, Oasis could continue without Liam who is just a liabilty to the band and Gem and Andy hopefully will both see sense and join Noel as he can easily take up the singing parts on every Oasis song and they can continue to play minus Liam

Dave | 8/29/2009, 5:13 am EST

People should realize that the last two albums they brought out were actually pretty good. Thats four (five if you include the collection of b-sides) brilliant albums, two of them massive influences on the british music scene. People can say what they like about them as people but their music, when they got it right, was amazing. Can’t deny the influence they’ve had, even if you dont like Liams rock n roll attitude.

Dave | 8/29/2009, 5:19 am EST

Not a big deal in the US maybe but in lots of other parts of the world this is huge. Hopefully Noel will bring out his solo album soon, long over-due i think he’s done all he can with Oasis. The last two albums were actually brilliant for all those who gave up after heathen chemistry. There not that unpopular in the US either, the last album got no 3 on the album charts.

Joshua | 8/29/2009, 5:40 am EST

Oasis break up while the Beatles break up on the Rolling Stone cover. Ironic…. Hopefully, the’ll get back together better than ever.

Johan Senderos | 8/29/2009, 5:45 am EST

This is so sad. The greatest band EVER is no more. Noel is a genius. His solo stuff will be great. 3 top 5 USA albums suggests thats some Americans had taste!

LOL | 8/29/2009, 5:45 am EST

I’m more shocked to hear they’re still around. Who knew? 15 years ago they were average at best.

comments good or bad it just proves Oasis were and are still a relevant band.
Always thought Liam was tosser though!
Noel will be back soon with a solo and still play many oasis songs live surely.

stewart | 8/29/2009, 5:58 am EST

gah | 8/29/2009, 6:11 am EST

I love oasis but I’m sortof glad that it’s finnaly over. still love some songs of theres but its about time they stopped…

The Ugly American | 8/29/2009, 6:13 am EST

I love how people are complaining that the Yanks have no taste, etc.

For the Record: WE INVENTED THIS STUFF! I think we have a vague clue about how it works.

That being said, I did like some of their work in the mid-90’s. I admit to not following them as much later on. The last song I really remember that stood out was “Lyla”. I recently got back into Oasis, and Britpop in general, about a year or so ago. It is regrettable that they decided to call it a day, presumably. Most likely they will find a way to get back together in the future.

Samm | 8/29/2009, 6:17 am EST

Listening to Oasis’ What’s The Story (Morning Glory) when I was 12 was the thing that made me pick up a guitar and start playing. now nearly 4 years down the line Oasis have grown into my faveorite band, and i really do think its a great shame that its come to this and that Noel has had to leave. I blame Liam for all of this, i understand he’s a great vocalist, but Oasis should have chucked him years ago, Noel is a great guitarist and songwriter who i think should continue and make his own stuff as planned. If he does, i’ll be looking forward to it (Y)

renia | 8/29/2009, 7:35 am EST

I agree with stu..in my opinion oasis offered a lot not only to the british music scene but worldwide…many other bands have been influenced by oasis work and sound and i think that their songs will not fade away as the music history continues

pickets | 8/29/2009, 7:36 am EST

another thing how come all the yanks are banging on about how bad a band they were?? in the last ten years you’ve produced 2 half decent bands kings of leon and the killers… and even the kings of leon say you have no clue about music and they wish they were english.!!!

Joulja | 8/29/2009, 7:43 am EST

Oasis are the most improtant band to come out of englad in the past 20 years? Are you joking? I am an english guy and was relieved to hear this news, Oasis should have dissappeared a long time ago, granted definatly maybe was definative, but definative of a faddy genre in the 90s that they have been trying and failing to keep alive ever since. About as impotant as the spice girls mate. You wat some decent britpop see different class by pulp and blurs parklife. A ehole lot better than the tripe these guys used to punch out.

Andrew McKittrick | 8/29/2009, 7:49 am EST

Ugly American, Americans invented the stuff? The English scene is and always will be the greatest. Please look at some of the names on this list.

The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Smiths
Queen
David Bowie
The Who
The Clash
The Kinks
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Radiohead

That list IS the greatest in music history

TequilaMockingbird | 8/29/2009, 9:00 am EST

I’d argue that a band like Radiohead is MUCH more important to modern British music than a band like Oasis. Really, in 10-20 years time, do you think people are going to rank Dig Out Your Soul over In Rainbows? Not saying Oasis didn’t have their moments, just keep it in perspective. And this is coming from one of the few people who enjoyed Standing On The Shoulders of Giants. And as far as Oasis being “the last great modern rock band”, give Kings of Leon 2-3 years or so, and they’ll be right there with them.

Bloodraven | 8/29/2009, 9:09 am EST

OMW…stupid Liam…well Noel will be better off without his perverted brother! I always said that Noel is the one that made the band! Its easy to stand up on stage like Liam and sing with those stupid glasses…Hinding his drug addiction!
Go Noel Go…take your guitar and voice and make something new!

p.s Even south africans a devastated!

stu | 8/29/2009, 9:24 am EST

tequilla.have you heard doys.falling down, the turning, bag it up.man those 3 songs alone showed how much oasis were still relevant.as for radiohead ok,yeah some there stuff was great, but thom yorke and gang dissapeared up their own arses after ok computer.and do you really think it would be news if they split?doubt would be news coverage at all,no disresecpt at all but there would not be.oasis are an institution for good or bad.people do care bout them,it shows in the love and hate.radiohead could never create that

JRL | 8/29/2009, 9:28 am EST

“Ugly Americn – You invented it? Two words mate LED ZEPPELIN.” Uhh, you’re joking, right? Ever heard of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, James Brown? What about the artists that Led Zep ripped off, like Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson? Or artists that the Sex Pistols ripped off, like the New York Dolls and the Ramones? Come on, Britain has produced some great bands but you can’t make any serious claim that they invented Rock n Roll! As for Oasis, they were great throughout the 90’s, but their shelf life ended years ago.

Anonymous | 8/29/2009, 9:33 am EST

Oasis was Britain’s latter day Rolling Stones (despite the Beatles’ influence).

Radiohead is Britain’s latter day Pink Floyd.

I`m disappointed, but who knows…. maybe Noel will follow suit and form his own “supergroup”?

VirgoinVertigo | 8/29/2009, 9:40 am EST

I love Oasis, but when I heard they were getting back together, I had a hunch it wouldn’t last. It’s actually kinda sad that the brothers can’t work together well. Both are very talented. Solo projects in the works, hopefully!!

Sad day for rock music | 8/29/2009, 9:52 am EST

Sad day, IMO Oasis was one of the best bands to emerge since early 90s. Hell, their b-sides were better than most of the stuff that’s played on mainstream rock radio. Look up and download Whatever, by far their best song ever. It’s just a shame that they lost their significance in the U.S.

stu | 8/29/2009, 9:58 am EST

where do all my posts go?

Boney | 8/29/2009, 10:02 am EST

HEY! did I have my post removed for giving my opinion of Liam. Still a TOSSER!
When were the Beatles ever American? as The Ugly American appears to suggest

Texas Yank | 8/29/2009, 10:04 am EST

While Noel is a genius songwriter, Liam is our generations Ringo Starr. He’s a drunken parasite, with mediocre talent at best, who has skated through his very blessed life on the coattails of his brothers talent. The best Oasis show I ever saw, Liam was too drunk to perform, so Noel sang the songs…it was incredible!

Liam is completely unnecessary, I’m surprised it took Noel this long to be done with him. Obviously he loves his brother, and tried for 15 years to make it work. If it wasn’t for Noel, Liam would be working as a dishwasher…and probably a shitty one at that.

Propellerhead | 8/29/2009, 10:10 am EST

Being an American, I’ll probably never know how important Oasis were, but they opened the door for alot of bands, and if nothing else made some great music. It sucks the brothers have been drama queens, but what can ya do.

coachmaddog | 8/29/2009, 10:18 am EST

The Brits do r’n'r better, but didn’t invent it.

words were mumbled, guitars distorted, they sucked.

Reunion Tour | 8/29/2009, 11:03 am EST

So now we’ll have to endure a reunion tour when they are all old men puking and pissing all over the stage like ACDC. It’s all so predictable. They haven’t had a relevant song for years anyway.

CashCrowe | 8/29/2009, 11:10 am EST

I welcome the news. On the last few Oasis records, the best songs were those sung by Noel. Now hopefully he’ll at long last pursue the solo career I’ve been hoping he would since ‘96 when he sung solo at the MTV Unplugged gig (which was incredible).

renia | 8/29/2009, 11:11 am EST

Not a prob stu take care too…the only thing that i regret is i havent seen them live…anyway ppl take care and listen to good music…

Re: TequilaMockingbird | 8/29/2009, 11:13 am EST

Oasis are definitely more important to British rock than Radiohead. I ask you who has influenced more bands? Yeah Coldplay are radiohead influenced but there are far more good modern rock bands who cite Oasis as an influence like The Killers, Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams and the Arctic Monkeys. I don’t think anybody can argue over which albums are better than others as music is 100% subjective but I can argue that Dig Out Your Soul is ten times more accessible than In Rainbows. While in 15 years In Rainbows might be remembered for its part in revolutionizing file sharing (with the band letting people name their price) but the average 15 year old kid will pick “The Shock of the Lightning” over “Bodysnatchers”. It all depends what you’re going for I guess. I know that if I’m going out for a big night I’ll put on Dig Out Your Soul while In Rainbows is best reserved for sitting around a basement smoking a shitload of weed or eating a bag full of mushrooms.

Naldo | 8/29/2009, 11:48 am EST

Luke L | 8/29/2009, 12:04 pm EST

My favorite band and alltime hero. People will realize how good their catalog is eventually. Damnit Noel…but I guess I can’t blame you.

oregon | 8/29/2009, 12:13 pm EST

I’m an American and nothing pisses me off more than ugly Americans…know your s*** before you comment! Brits have been shaping the landscape of rock n roll for the last 50+ years, and Oasis has been as much a part of it as any other band to come out of England. The problem is that most Americans listen to whatever crap is spoon fed to them through the radio. I traveled to Manchester from Portland, Oregon to see Oasis in Man City Stadium in ‘05…f****** brilliant! By the way…the next relevant band to come out of the US will be the first in a looooong time! The Jonas Brothers…….seriously…… …need I say more?

Mike | 8/29/2009, 1:02 pm EST

…..what a fiasco. IMHO, Noel is a jerk, but that man wrote some amazing songs. :)

Noel | 8/29/2009, 1:09 pm EST

was always the class act out of these two. Not that he was a great guy, but he was a saint compared to his brother.

Doosh!!! | 8/29/2009, 1:14 pm EST

Liam and Richard Ashcroft will now try to form some douchey supergroup and it will crash and burn.

David | 8/29/2009, 1:28 pm EST

No offense to any Brits, but it’s pretty apparent here, that from outside the U.K., not many really care about Oasis anymore. In the U.S., they had a few hits in the 90’s, but now it’s an entirely different generation of kids who don’t even know who they are. People here talk about the biggest, best band of the last 20 years, and Rolling Stone gives it a few paragraphs. Sorry, this isn’t big news outside of the U.K.

Jon G. | 8/29/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Britain has long produced the best rock `n roll bands, while America has the best solo artists. It’s as simple as that.

Jake | 8/29/2009, 1:32 pm EST

David, I completely agree. Aside from being mildly popular in the 90’s, they never really had mass appeal in the U.S. Radiohead was able to break into the U.S. with much more success than Oasis.

Music History | 8/29/2009, 1:43 pm EST

Do they teach music history in England? All the Brit bands you all cite (who are great – Stones are my favorite band of all time, incidentally) will unabashedly say they were trying to rip off American R & B/rock n roll a al Berry, Waters, Lewis, etc. We did invent it; only the mix of country, blues and jazz present in the US could create Rock n Roll.

As for Oasis, they were decent, but I have to say that the same nationalism evidenced in your list of “inventers” seems to be creeping into your sense of reality on how great Oasis was. Greatest band of the last 30 years? Please. See Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Black Crowes (their new album, and the last one, top anything Oasis ever did), Radiohead, Alice N Chains, Neil Young (yeah, he’s still around and relevant), Blind Melon, Ryan Adams, R.E.M., U2 (even though not my personal cup of tea) etc. I could go on, but I won’t. The point should be emphasized that all those artists are not only talented but they care about music, fans, AND have a grip enough on reality to not think they were god’s gift. Get a grip, people.

Kev | 8/29/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Their last 2 albums ‘Dont Believe The Truth’ & ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ were very good and underrated. Going along w/ the awesome debut ‘Definitely Maybe’ & and the great follow up in ‘Morning Glory’ plus all thos B-sides that are better than most bands A sides. They were a great band and did not sound like the Beatles….so sick of that easy knock on them.

And | 8/29/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Ireland has the best band ever in U2. WORD

rollingstoned | 8/29/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Definitely Maybe is one of the great Rock albums. It’s a classic and can stand with just about anything released since.

Whatever Noel wants to do is cool with me because that album gives him a free pass for life…..he single-handedly obliterated all the grunge crap (tuneless noise).

Skunk-Ape | 8/29/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Who knew they were still around? Another headline for the “Who Gives A Fuck” column.

Hey Kev | 8/29/2009, 2:25 pm EST

It’s not really a knock, but think about it. “Don’t Look Back In Anger” couldn’t sound more like a Beatles song. SUCKSUCKSUCKSUCKSUCKSUCKSUCK!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

stu | 8/29/2009, 2:30 pm EST

joulja yeah right, pulp blur!!!!!!!!!dont get me wrong used to love blur.modern life is rubbish was 1 of the best albums of 90s,and very underrated.but parlife!!!!???hmmmm ok.wasnt even blurs best album,as 4 pulp get real.jeez if ever a band were overarated them it was them

hey david | 8/29/2009, 2:50 pm EST

to david, its not that not too many fans care for oasis outside the uk – its just not many care about them in u.s. around the world from argentina to japan. from italy france, oasis are still a big chart topping band who play to millions of people, everytime they tour. if the us doesnt care that doesnt mean the world does not my ignorant friend. and although the u.s might not care, oasis can still sell out madison square garden in record time.

And? | 8/29/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Who cares? This band wasn’t worth shit 15 years ago. Good thing he explained himself online. You can’t understand half what those mush mouthed asses were saying.

Falling Down | 8/29/2009, 3:13 pm EST

The attitude, the swagger and of course, the music. The last true great rock’n'roll stars.

Loved each and every one of their albums, not to mention the absolutely amazing B-Sides. The only band for which I still go out and buy the CD. I’ll miss looking forward to their new music immensly. Noel’s a genius and will no doubt come out with brilliant tunes, but it won’t be Oasis.

A very sad day indeed.

Kev | 8/29/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Yeah the first 5 seconds w/ the purposeful ‘Imagine’ piano after that it is purely an Oasis song. I don’t hear the Beatles in Rock N Roll Star, Slideaway, Acquiese, Live Forever,Columbia, Supersonic,Fade Away,Dya Know What I Mean,Gas Panic,Bag It Up, The Turning, Shock Of The Lightning….etc…. PS…. you & your favorite band sucks!

silverbeatle | 8/29/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Great rock band… that came out of England,
Yeah its true the best rock bands came from England, but here in American we got Hendrix and that you can’t never beat..

Pam | 8/29/2009, 4:21 pm EST

These are sad news, because Oasis really wrote some relevant tunes. But I´ve always hated reading all those stories that were dealing with the endless battles between the two brothers (like little kids…how ridiculous). So Noel possibly made the right decision to quit this band. Maybe Liam and Noel really have enough talent to start promising solo careers. Only the fans who have already bought tickets for the European tour will be disappointed.

America | 8/29/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Wow can’t say I’m surprised at how many Americans live in a tiny bubble. Just because oasis ‘only’ sold six million albums in your country doesn’t mean they’re not relevant; they’re just not relevant in the US. Given the fact that the Jonas Brothers are relevant enough to be on the cover of Rolling Stone, it’s a compliment that America doesn’t like them. America got so offended when Oasis had the nerve to drink, smoke, swear and refused to fake graciousness and humbleness. I guess the clean cut image of the Backstreet Boys and Jonas Brothers is nice and safe for American Rock and Roll. The funny thing is that while America is sickened by that kind of confidence in rock and roll they seem to thrive on it in its hip hop culture where they write songs and albums about how great they are, how much everybody else sucks and all the drugs they do. Weird.

anonymous | 8/29/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Great band! Loved Morning Glory. I do feel as if Noel is a bit of a tool though.

Nellup | 8/29/2009, 4:33 pm EST

I’m not an Oasis fan, sure I have some a couple of their albums but I wouldn’t consider myself a fan.

Oasis was/is an important part of Britain’s cultural indentity, especially during the mid-90’s. They are an integral part of the modern British music scene like them or loathe them.

The Gallagher brothers despise eachother and it’s a near miracle they lasted this long.

Oasis belong to the 1990’s and I thank them for the tunes they provided during those sunny Summer days.

P.S.

Jimi Hendrix is indeed a fine American artist… But one could easily argue that without British assistance he could have achieved very little in the music industry.

kelanders | 8/29/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Sooooo over rated. Wonderwall is right up their “Come on Irene” as an example of Britains worst. Nobody outside of a few pubs in the UK even knew this band any more

Troof | 8/29/2009, 4:55 pm EST

The relief is ours, Noel.

Mary | 8/29/2009, 4:56 pm EST

I do give a fuck about them and this thing noel has just done made me very angry and sad. come on!

dv | 8/29/2009, 5:37 pm EST

the most positive band ever. listen to their music, makes you wanna take over the world. the swagger, the attitude, they were natural born rock’n'roll stars. Liam just needs a good slap every once in awhile. They love music too much to let it fall apart like this.

Liam – when on his A game best rok’n'rol singer on the planet.
time heals

Nellup | 8/29/2009, 5:38 pm EST

They should have parted ways years ago. Some decent stuff, but nothing of any quality for a long, long time.

It's ok to be American | 8/29/2009, 5:38 pm EST

Hey.. Suede never caught on over here in the U.S and they were FANTASTIC!

I love Liam and Noel, and you could never write them off. The last record is one of their best, and I for one will miss them.

Great music on both continents.. We invented, and they perfected it!!.. Ok by me!

Plus.. Engerland Swings like the pendulum do!

Good riddance. Radiohead & Blur were always the better bands.

Ride | 8/29/2009, 6:53 pm EST

Maybe Andy Bell will get Ride back together. They were great. Oasis has been overrated since 1996. Good riddance!

idiots | 8/29/2009, 6:56 pm EST

yea, Oasis sucks sooooo bad. thats why they sold 70 million albums while Radiohead has 30 million and Blur (LOL) has less than 10 million (only the UK likes them).

Haha | 8/29/2009, 6:57 pm EST

I could not care less about any of them but Blur was a joke band. He got it right with Gorillaz, though.

Butt Smoke | 8/29/2009, 7:14 pm EST

It was kind of fun in the 90’s when these punks would fight, but now it just seems dumb. What kind of an asshole walks when there is a whole “room” full of fans waiting to hear you play your dumb ass pop songs. Your not the fucking Beatles so get over yourselves…dummies.

Bob | 8/29/2009, 7:24 pm EST

“Good riddance. Radiohead & Blur were always the better bands.”

FAR better. Leave it to Roger Waters to speak the truth. Oasis should’ve packed it up in 1996.

rawkdude | 8/29/2009, 7:31 pm EST

Great band…screw Blur and Radiohead these guys rock…although I have a feeling they will be back

Anonymous | 8/29/2009, 7:41 pm EST

Blur was never a better band than Oasis at their peak. I guess you can argue Blur made more good records, and did it longer…..but their best work doesn’t touch the first 2 Oasis records. They never had the swagger.

As for Radiohead…..ain’t the same thing. Look, let’s pretend you people actually have ever kissed a girl…….so you’re going out tonight and you’re seeing this girl, and you’re gonna have some beers and see friends and laugh and have a good time.

Are you going to put on Kid A as the soundtrack for that night?

Nah …..well maybe some of you would. Shrug.

Let it go | 8/29/2009, 8:01 pm EST

You guys were huge in the 90s, but not anymore, so let it go, man. Do solo albums and stop bitching and moaning. There’s a British invasion going on at the moment, but it’s not being led by you. It hasn’t been in ages. Radiohead and Muse are doing it now. And there’ll be more to come, so step aside, cause you guys were never going to be the next Beatles anyway. You never saw Paul and John duke it out onstage like 5-year-olds, did you? Probably it’s because they had more class and talent in one finger than you do in your entire bodies.

Fitzbath | 8/29/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Oasis, sounds too derivative… I have heard it a million times… how come no one got pissed at the Beatles and the Stones when their first two or three albums were filled with Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly Covers? Who cares if they sound like this or like that… every band sounds somewhat like some other band.

Let it go | 8/29/2009, 8:21 pm EST

And furthermore… yes, the Brits have kicked our asses when it comes to rock music for the most part. But that would NEVER be possible without blues music, which gave birth to rock n roll, which WE, the Americans invented. Gospel music, another AMERICAN invention, also played a huge part in rock. Guess where the term rock n roll came from? Gospel music. Guess who inspired the Beatles, Rolling Stone, Led Zeppelin and Queen? Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner (aka QUEEN OF ROCK N ROLL). So while you Brits are sitting high & mighty, thinking you invented everything good, remember that you DIDN’T. You may have taken rock music and revolutionized, but we, yes, WE DAMN YANKEES invented it. So in reality, you should be kissing OUR asses. We may be taking a dump on music at the moment, but keep in mind that if weren’t for us, you wouldn’t have your precious British rock gods to brag about in the first place. Idiots.

InsularUSA | 8/29/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Hold off on everything Oasis fans -Apparently Oasis weren’t that popular in the US (as they weren’t on the radio!) which must mean that no other country in the wide world must like them (Sarcasm for my American friends)- 50 million albums sold doesn’t lie and a huge current world tour selling out in Japan, Korea, Mexico, South America, Europe and even your own Madison Sq. Gardens.

Let it go | 8/29/2009, 8:35 pm EST

And now that Amy Winehouse, Adele, Duffy and Estelle are making waves in R&B/soul, are guys gonna try to take credit for inventing that genre as well? Hey, to the idiot that referred to hip-hop as “nigger hip-hop”, I’m pretty sure if you guys had the hip-hop equivalents of Pink Floyd and Led Zep storm the music industry, you would try to lay claim on inventing hip-hop as well. Don’t deny it, you hypocrite.

The Ugly American | 8/29/2009, 8:36 pm EST

I can see I ruffled a few feathers here. As I noted earlier, I am not 100% against Oasis. I did like DEFINITELY MAYBE, as well as portions of MORNING GLORY. Even I’ll admit that SUPERSONIC & WONDERWALL are great songs.

To those Americans who say their own musical climate is poor, I recommend digging around. Plenty of stuff out there, but you have to search harder these days to find it.

For those who say British were better/perfected it, I recommend going back and taking another look at American acts. Others have backed me on Presley, Berry, Little Richard, and so on, so I won’t get into who started it. Britian (& the whole planet itself, over time) have all brought something to the party. As Rod Serling used to say at the beginning of the TWILIGHT ZONE:

submitted for your approval:

Beach Boys / The Byrds
Jimi Hendrix / The Doors
Grateful Dead / Velvet Underground
Alice Cooper / Frank Zappa
Eagles / Ramones
Talking Heads / Van Halen
REM / Motley Crue
Guns N Roses / Metallica
Nirvana / Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins / Green Day
White Stripes / QOTSA

Merely a small sampling, off the top of my head. You may not agree w/all, but it’s certainly a clue as to the diversity we’ve enjoyed here as well.

The Ugly American | 8/29/2009, 8:39 pm EST

BTW, sorry I spelled Britain wrong in the last post. Not purposeful snubbing or anything.

Keith | 8/29/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Leave it to Oasis to bring out all the haters. But, special mention has to go to the singer for Bloc Party for being a total douche bag for cracking jokes about the news on stage to a bunch of kids who paid money to see Oasis in Paris. Talk about shit bands, who is that guy to criticize anyone else’s music anyway? Oasis will always be for working class kids, so all you arty eclectic weenies go put on your atonal nonsense and leave rock n’ roll music to bands that know how to put the swagger in your step and the melody in your soul!

Re:kelanders | 8/29/2009, 8:54 pm EST

“Come On Irene”…do you mean “Come on Eileen”? Maybe you should learn a little bit about music history before you go insulting a band like Oasis. You have zero credibility; especially when you compare it to “Wonderwall”. If you wanna talk Rip Offs, listen to “Wonderwall” and “D’You Know What I Mean” and then listen to “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by the biggest plagiarists out there…Green Day.

JRL | 8/29/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Strange, this seems to have turned into a US vs. Britain pissing match. I think both countries have produced some great(and shite)acts:

US (Dylan, Hendrix, Elvis, Velvet Underground, Ramones, Nirvana, NIN, The Doors, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Public Enemy, Guns N Roses, Springsteen, REM, Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam, The Stooges, Johnny Cash, Wilco, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc.)

Britain (The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Oasis, Stone Roses, Peter Gabriel, The Smiths, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Police, Pulp, The Cure, etc.)

And, on the other spectrum, you can thank the USA for NKOTB, ‘N Sync, and Backstreet Boys and Great Britain for Take That, The Spice Girls, and Wham!

JRL | 8/29/2009, 9:06 pm EST

“America got so offended when Oasis had the nerve to drink, smoke, swear and refused to fake graciousness and humbleness.”
Um, Guns N Roses had that market cornered a few years before Oasis and it didn’t hurt them in the US. What did hurt GNR (and Oasis) was when they got too big, bloated, and pompous and started producing shitty albums. See “Use your Illusion 1 and 2″ for the former and “Be Here Now” for the latter.

Travis | 8/29/2009, 9:20 pm EST

Ok, I am a huge Oasis fan and I’m upset but this is the third or fourth time that I have witnessed a breakup within the band since I became a fan. This time Noel definitely seems more sincere about it. But I’m not writing right now because I’m upset about the breakup. I’m writing because of some of the comments I’ve been reading. Yes, the UK has kicked the States’ ass with rock bands, hands down. Someone said there are great US bands, you just have to dig around to find them. C’mon people, that is the fucking problem! Who the hell wants to dig around for good music when it seems to grow on trees in Britain? It has since the Beatles. No digging around should be necessary. People will argue with me over this I’m sure, but it’s true regardless of your opinions on Oasis, British rock music, American rock music, whatever. Maybe we as Americans should appreciate good music regardless of it’s origin. I will miss what Noel has offered to Oasis, I mean for the better part of 10 years he WAS Oasis. If it is indeed true, one of alternative music’s great chapters will be closing.

And to whoever wrote the very first post (”Doin’ alright” or whatever)…a vast majority of music’s biggest pricks are from right here in America (especially hard rock/metal bands, emo bands, rappers)…I’m American and I’m not hating on America, but you get big pricks in music in every country, every genre. It happens.

Oh dear! | 8/29/2009, 9:24 pm EST

‘Ugly American’ put Motley Crue as decent US band – why don’t you put Poison while you are at it! oh dear!
All I hear from ’some’ Americans is that Oasis did nothing after What’s the Story….they did have some average albums but last two albums were very strong and were selling out arenas/stadiums worldwide period (as you Yanks say!)
Even some of your crappy US bands like Maroon5, The Fray, Good Charlotte and Sum41 cite them as an influence! not too mention Dave Grohl and Lars from Metallica loving them as quoted many times!

no avail | 8/29/2009, 10:03 pm EST

The Use Your Illusion albums weren’t crap (at least the fans didn’t think that, the albums debuted at #1 and 2 respectively, were certified 7 x platinum by the RIAA and were well-received by the critics, not to mention resulted in one of the longest and highest grossing tours in rock history). It’s just that some people saw the albums as being less GNR and more like the Axl Rose project. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing except that this wasn’t Axl’s solo project. And it was a huge 180 from Appetite For Destruction, so naturally a lot of people who were huge fans of the album weren’t going to welcome UYI with open arms.

anon | 8/29/2009, 10:17 pm EST

don’t forget, Radiohead has had the same lineup since their inception. Oasis must’ve had at least 5 or 6 changes. I only have 2 of their records: Definitely Maybe, and, What’s The Story (Morning Glory).

American who loves Oasis | 8/29/2009, 10:51 pm EST

Wow – some of you guys from the US are pretty narrow minded. I am 55, Female, American and have subscribed to RS since the beginning. Dylan is God – period. Love Zeppelin, John Lennon, Pearl Jam, U2 (especially The Edge), Jimi Hendrix, Hank Williams (Sr), Jack White, The Who, The Band, Neil Young, many, many more AND Noel Gallagher.
But right under Dylan, second only to Dylan is Paul Weller. The vast majority of Americans don’t even have a clue who he is, but he is loved (worshiped!) all around the world (no pun intended). So everybody just calm down. Don’t be such snobs. Good music is the common denominator here.
Noel will be just fine. He is the genius of the band. He IS the Band. Great song writer. AWESOME singer – much more emotion and depth than Liam’s bombastic posing. One of the most impressive performances of all times was when Noel stepped up at MTV Unplugged while Liam pouted in the audience. I have been a fan ever since. Poor Liam. Without Big Bro to have your back I really worry for you. The John Lennon impersonation has worn thin. But he is one of the best tambourine players of all times. Tied with Tracy Partridge.
Hope Gem has the good sense to go with Noel. The two of them alone are worthy of a sell out tour. And for all the folks hating on Oasis, just go to YouTube and take a listen to “Falling Down”. I have a running list of “best songs of all time”. “Falling Down” immediately went on the list after hearing it only once! I have listened to it 15 times in a row and it still touches me. That is Rock and Roll.
PS – Noel, Why didn’t you just FIRE the Kid?!?

meh | 8/29/2009, 10:57 pm EST

Oasis was a pretty good band with some pretty good songs even though the lyrics were fairly meaningless throughout. I preferred Blur though (and that’s coming from an American).

As far as the whole Britain vs the US, I don’t really know who’s better. I must say though, I deeply appreciate what the British have done for music. Also, it does seem to me like they seem to be more tolerant of alternative/indie music than us in the US. I’d trade our Hot 100 for theirs any day.

TexasOasisFan | 8/29/2009, 11:19 pm EST

Us Americans are showing a lack of respect for a great rock and roll band and a lack of music knowledge. I have been a huge fan of Oasis for years….I went to see them in Paris this year at a sold out arena and nearly went to Peru of all places to see them. They are still HUGE across the globe and have a relatively decent following in the US, even in Texas! Believe me outside of the US they are very relevant – they have been headlining every Global festival that they have attended from France, Spain, UK, Germany, Korea, Japan etc. Yes I know they are also ‘forein countries’ with ‘foreign people’…what do they know??

Eric Spivey | 8/29/2009, 11:26 pm EST

Um…they were still together?

getthedoggie | 8/30/2009, 12:04 am EST

just my opinion, but Oasis had a few good songs but are basically arrogant knobs. If it wasn’t for the Beatles’ ‘Rain’, ‘She Said She Said’ and ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’, they wouldn’t even have had a career. Check it out yourself .

Anonymous, it’s pretty lame to resort to “you guys never kiss girls” statements against people who prefer Blur and Radiohead to Oasis. Are you just sad that Oasis only managed one record (Definitely Maybe) that’s on the level of the last six records that Blur and Radiohead put out each? By the way, I think Zeppelin songs make for a much better soundtrack to bar nights than Oasis. Oh, but I wouldn’t expect someone like you to know who Zeppelin are.

the american/british debate is a fucking stupid one. people should just appreciate music regardless of where it came from. there is no who is better, it is all a matter of opinion. with that said fuck oasis. they have put some good songs, some great songs but they are the most disfunctional, arrogant band headed by two brothers who nobody should give a shit about because they are scumbag motherfuckers. thank god oasis is done, its about time.

Anonymous | 8/30/2009, 6:10 am EST

Oasis captured a moment. 1995 was a year of change in the UK with a new government and Oasis provided the soundtrack to that. There was a feeling in the air.
Just imagine if there had been an amazing new band selling millions of records in the US last summer. You had the country taking a brand new direction and everyone was singing along.
Oasis will be sadly missed by all music fans (and tabloid journalists) in the UK.
With love from the UK. x.

stu | 8/30/2009, 7:56 am EST

well still the debate rolls on i see.this for a band that are apparently not relevant pmsl.the uk v usa argument is interesting.not sure why this taking up so many comments.although personally i have never got american rock bands coz they dont say anything to me,oasis did and still will, the plp who say they have not been relevant since 90s are talking crap.and comparin them 2 other bands like blur ,radiohead etc is pointless as they were all very different bands.and can all be appreicated on own merits.but oasis influence has in the main been bigger on british bands

oasis hasn’t put out a great album since morning glory and that was back in the 90’s.
noel lost his mojo a long time ago and believed he could continue without most of the morning glory lineup but that lineup had a chemistry.
and that’s been gone.
i was also sick and tired of these assholes arrogance.
look fuckers, you’re not robert fripp or fuckin john lennon.
you made two derivitive though great albums and that was it.
many times you treated your fans like shit and liam an asshole.
so it’s over.
i don’t think so.
noel always fighting with his brother and once his coke money runs out he’ll call liam.
noel you’l; never be lennon no matter how much bullshit you talk.
get your head out of your arse and make a great album again with that turdhead liam!

Greg | 8/30/2009, 9:47 am EST

I think Noel was the driving force behind Oasis and I would expect him to release a strong solo album, should he choose to do so. I once saw him sing an entire unplugged set when Liam didn’t show up (big surprise!) and his voice is great. He doesn’t need Liam, you I’m quite certain is a complete dickhead.

In Australia this is pretty big music news, as Oasis are/were very popular down here – Still could sell out very large venues! We recognise great rock and roll….All I seem to be reading is Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back in Anger were Oasis only songs blah blah blah.. from certain areas (mostly Americans). In my humble opinion that last album was album was great I have been to many live gigs and Oasis gigs have always the best….and yes please Rolling Stone need another cover of the Jonas Brother or that idiot from American Idol with a snake round his neck – which may explain some of the anti-Oasis comments on here

What a selfish prick. Im glad that im not an Oasis fan because if I was, I would feel like I was being shit on by this dude. And the thing is, I really don’t mind their music but the fact that they are such pompous assholes completely turns me off to the point where I refuse to listen to them. It’s not up to Noel Gallagher to decide whether or not he’s brilliant, thats up to the fans to decide. I wish nothing but success to any artist willing to share their work with the world, but I really hope Oasis never tours again and never gets inducted into the rock and roll HOF just to spite Liam and Noel who obviously don’t give a shit about their fans. I can’t wait for the Noel Gallagher/Kanye West collaboration, I’m sure it will be off the fucking charts brilliant.

OH Dear/Travis:

My dear, you knocked my inclusion of Motley Crue on my list of notable bands. Believe it or not, there are people who would put the Crue up there with the best. Please consider there is a wide variety of music to be heard.

Travis, you claimed great bands seem to grow on trees in Britain. If this were so, how come we aren’t having a massive Brit phase right now in the US? The current US scene is nothing to shake a stick at.

Once again, no offense to the Oasis lovers. Just don’t anybody go pretending that you whipped this stuff up out of nowhere. And for anybody who thinks it’s possible to come up with the perfect rock band, that’s not true. There’s no such thing as a perfect rock band, nor will there ever be. There’s just varying shades of greatness.

saltlick | 8/30/2009, 1:54 pm EST

i am getting hacked of with loads of americans slagging oasis off.fine u dont like them so what.some of the bands you bring up i detest.long poodle permed hair tight leather trousred wearing knobs. poison, motley crue, god all mighty, did they ever have relevance even in their own heads.but hey each to there own.but for you to talk about oasis as if they never made good music after the mid 90s is soooo far off the mark.talk about things you know about.i would be the first to say not everything they released was great.but even at their worst would take them every day over pretty much all the bands some off you have mentioned.blind melon!!!!!?????hmmmm.

Travis | 8/30/2009, 3:20 pm EST

To the Ugly American,

They do grow on trees there. The only reason we’re not having a big wave of popularity for British bands is because America is brainwashed by what’s played in clubs, everything that is on what used to be MTV, radio playing only top 40 singles, etc. and that means meaningless pop, emo, hip-hop/r&b and the watered down version of what rock and country used to be. I would take Arctic Monkeys or the Kooks over any of that shit. And the only reason there aren’t many great alternative rock bands here in the US (not including those that have been around since the 90’s, because most of them are still great) is because record companies are so fucked up that even though they can afford to try and sign a great rock band, they won’t, simply for fear of it not selling.

And to some of you who said Oasis were only popular for two albums. Last album was top 5, album before that reached no. 12 I think…Yes they released dodgy albums here and there but they had their stride back and most of you were not willing to listen because you’re stuck in 1994 and 1995. Get over it. Bands grow. If they made Champagne Supernova or Wonderwall over and over since 1995, I know for a fact you all would be saying “Wow, same old song and dance for years.” You cannot tell me any of the songs from the last two albums sounded like songs from the first two. It’s still great music regardless and if you don’t like it, that’s a matter of opinion, but move on from comparing two different eras of the band.

andy | 8/30/2009, 4:06 pm EST

UK music scene is way better than US’s scene, hands down. and no, Motley Crue is not one of the greats. they are a mildly entertaining party band

Oasis is one of my favorite bands, its just that Noel and Liam arent in my list of favorite people. They are both dicks. I figured the band would be disbanded after one of the brothers killed the other backstage before a show.

There’s definitely a clear divide between people, but hey music is subjective and there are differnet tastes (including even Motely Crue). However to say Oasis weren’t relevant or a popular band, due to the fact that they weren’t huge in the Good Ol US of A is just ignorant! Remember there are other countries outside of the USA….it’s call the World….travel sometime you may like it (I jest!). Anyway Oasis were still very much popular and selling out around the world (that area on the globe around the USA)

stu | 8/30/2009, 5:32 pm EST

and yes i agree that all the americans who didnt get oasis, and why should you because they didnt talk to you, they grew up working class kids in england and talked through their music and generally about england a country that they were born in and still live in.and we still care for them they are an institution here.for all there faults and fuck ups they have remained a very important band, and will be rememberd for years to come.

Joel Knapp...CHICAGO,USA | 8/30/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Oasis were a brilliant band during 1994-1998. 3 great albums with b-sides that were actually BETTER than the album tracks. They should have called it a day in 1998 and went out on top with Be Here Now. For the past 10 years Liam Gallagher has been nothing more than a “haircut and a walk”. Simply put…a singer who couldn’t sing anymore. Thanks for the early inspiration and albums Oasis. And thank you Noel for finally putting this dying horse of a band out of it’s misery.

Bob – You wouldn’t expect me to know who Zeppelin are because you are wrong about a lot of stuff.

I’m not a Zep fan at all. No Radiohead albums mean nearly as much to me as Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory…….certainly no freakin’ Blur album does either. 6 pretty good albums by Blur don’t beat 2 stone cold great ones by Oasis, sorry.

Now, you go listen to Kid A and contemplate man’s isolation in the modern world and I’m going to go have a beer, ok?

Mazzy | 8/30/2009, 9:56 pm EST

Sorry but they weer almost a cover band anyway. I liked to listen to some some of their music but is was always so derivative, Not original at all.

Mazzy | 8/30/2009, 9:57 pm EST

And if would want to know the best band of battling brothers, I’ll take the KINKS any day

I'm a Yank | 8/30/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Oasis were always either great or good. “I’m Outta Time” was one of the best tunes last year. If I was a Brit I’d probably hate Americans, or at least have a wicked complex. Vive la Everyone (except the French)

Rollingstoned | 8/30/2009, 10:08 pm EST

The thing is you don’t have to take the Kinks……you can take both bands.

I love the Kinks myself, but as musch as I love them there’s no Kinks album I truly love – lots of great singles though from 64-70.

shank | 8/30/2009, 10:24 pm EST

Radiohead is good but if you stripped away all their sound effects few would care about their actual songs.
Oasis succeed the hard way on the basis of words and melody.
Like the Beatles.
The last 2 were Oasis albums were great. Not as good as the first 2 but still great.

mmd | 8/30/2009, 11:01 pm EST

Shank you are on crack. Radiohead will always be first and foremost a guitar driven band. Have you not heard Pablo Honey, The Bends or Ok Computer? You mean to tell me that all those songs dont stand on their own without the effects? How old are you? Go back to school son.

wa wa weegi | 8/30/2009, 11:09 pm EST

Radiohead is No. 1

Good riddance, your comment is hilarious.

oasis was a hit and miss in U.S.A , also paul mccarthy from the beatles HATED Oasis when they came out saying they ripped off the beatles music listen to don’t look back in anger same intro as to let it be. though i did like the song morning glory, and whats the deal with england people think there so high and mighty? we’re all humans in and outside so we all have opinions so if someone said they suck well in thre opinion they suck stop getting so fucking offended when someone said they don’t like the band geez!

i grew up in the 90s, WTSMG is the soundtrack of my youth and Champenge Supernova is my theme song. I love Noel Gallagher he is a legend and will continue to compose classic music. Thanks for the memories and I cannot wait to hear Noel’s new creations. I live in the USA and I got Oasis and the swagger.

Emilio Guerrero | 8/31/2009, 2:48 am EST

I’m from CHile, so to me the whole debate about US vs UK is kinda lame…

the bottom line is that OASIS is one of the best bands of recent years. They play (or played) all around the world to millions of people.

Don’t Believe The Truth and Dig Out Your Soul were great albums. DOYS blew me away with great tunes like The Shock Of The Lightning, Outta Time, Bag It Up, Falling Downn, etc, etc, etc.

Hope they work things out.

And for all the people who still talk about oasis by listening onlye a few songs. I recomend you to listen Stop The Clocks (greatest hits) and Dig Out Your Soul… you will be surprised

Bob | 8/31/2009, 5:13 am EST

Anonymous – Very funny Kid A comment. Do you also think that Oasis was better than Zeppelin was?

i'm french and i was there | 8/31/2009, 5:27 am EST

I was devastated when the guy came on stage to tell us the gig was cancelled and that the band had split. Yeah i was there at Rock en Seine in Paris. Everyone around me thought it was a joke, it just couldn’t be true. In fact, one of the reasons why we all thought it was a joke was because on the free papernews of the metro, there was this imaginary scenario where everything in the festival would end badly, and the scenario stated the cancellation of Oasis gig on top of it.

Someone told me the fight happened during the last minutes of Bloc Party’s gig on the other side of the festival, apparently the singer said Liam and Noel had a fight. Don’t really know what he said though – i was already waiting for Oasis.

Anyway, i’m so sad the band doesn’t exist anymore, i’ve been listening to them for 13 years, but still, Noel has a solo project, and i just can’t wait for it, i’m supporting the guy here.

Everyone around me is saying it already happened several times over the last years and that they WILL get back together as always. But unfortunately it seems this time is the last time.

I understand why Noel took the decision to quit but it’s too hard to think Oasis is dead.

Now about the thing someone said about french people, well i’m really sorry it happened in Paris, i’m french and it seems english people will hate us even more for that, but hey, french people were truly and sincerely devastated to hear that, everyone’s just talking about it on the streets and during the two following days of the festival. French people do care about Oasis, please don’t make us look like we made this happen. Loads of english people came to this festival, i heard one guy saying something like ‘first they took Lady Di, now it’s Oasis, who else will Paris take away from us?’, well i think it’s just unfair.

No need to say more.

versedandvested | 8/31/2009, 9:04 am EST

just a glance over this monstrous thread is a testament to how “unimportant” this band is. What a joke.

Easily one of of the finest rock acts of the last 2 decades, their lack of massive popularity stateside was always a quiet blessing, as I and thousands of others were able to see them in 3,000 seat theaters instead of 80,000 seat stadiums. I think Noel crafted about a dozen number one singles and influenced countless other bands, including the killers, kasabian, arctic monkeys, and loads of others.

They’ve always been an easy critical target, but I’ll put their top 25 songs against anyones.

Simple as that.

rpaq | 8/31/2009, 10:23 am EST

Versedandvested,

Agreed with your last message. Oasis is definitely one of the best bands of the last 2 decades.

Their first two albums are classics. They have at least 4 really solid albums and unlike most of the band from the 90’s their music grows up well.

Songs like Rock’n Roll star or Supersonic have that juvenile energy that still works today.

Simple, catchy, well crafted songs.

Maztuhmind | 8/31/2009, 10:51 am EST

versedandvested | 8/31/2009, 11:48 am EST

Could not agree more. I still dare anyone to listen to “Definitely Maybe” and not think it’s one of the best albums of the 90s, and one of the best debut albums ever (”Slide Away” is brilliant). Don’t just ignore Oasis b/c you don’t like the Noel and Liam. Yeah, they’re arrogant as hell, but their comments always made me laugh more than they annoyed me. They’ll be back. Noel will do a solo album and he and Liam will eventually make peace. Always “Mad Fer It”!

JW | 8/31/2009, 12:28 pm EST

love em or hate em, they’ll be missed. They were and still are huge here in the UK, just look at the news coverage this story has got – national tv news, tabloid spreads….. They were a big part of a lot of peoples lives, like me who grew up with them. They soundtracked my youth like the beatles and stones did my parents. For any kid, rock n roll star, live forever and cigarettes and alcohol were national anthems, and i’m grateful i can say i was around to jump, get pissed up and sing along with my mates. Love em forever!!!

US vs UK summarized | 8/31/2009, 2:29 pm EST

The U.S. creates new musical boundaries. The British push those boundaries and make progress. The U.S. expands on that progress and creates new boundaries which the British push, and so on, and so forth.

Radiohead & Blur | 8/31/2009, 2:34 pm EST

We’re just a bunch if pretensious wankers who are envious of Oasis’ superiority.

Jason | 8/31/2009, 2:44 pm EST

As a Yank, I was in college for the grunge and Brit-pop era, and Oasis quickly became my favorite all-time band. Over the years, the Oasis slag off has become so severe you almost felt sheepish announcing your allegiance. It’s like claiming atheism in a church of latter day saints. You just don’t want to get into the debate.

Claims of being Beatle wannabees or irrelevant hacks, however, just don’t hold water. In fact, those comments are simply hackneyed, tired remarks, and are absent of the same creativity Oasis is often accused of lacking. The British media made them the Sex Beatles, but they don’t sound like The Beatles to me. And bands that people adore like The Killers (and many others) wanted to be Oasis. So, I don’t even know what relevance means. Is Britney Spears relevant because people listen to her? Or is Bon Iver relevant because they make great music but no one knows who they are? You have to be heard to be relevant, which means you have to be mainstream (isn’t that opposite of relevant?). Regardless, anything too stupid to be said is sung. Oasis understood this better than most (and that’s a compliment).

In the end, I think this split is a good thing. As a fan, I do think Oasis have either underestimated their fans or were overwhelmed by the weight of maintaining the Oasis ‘attitude’. Even Andy Bell said he was trying too hard to write ‘Oasis songs’ when he first joined. Both Gallaghers will be better off doing side projects for the time being. I just hope Noel doesn’t put his face on the cover art for his solo (I always thought that was cheesy), or form a supergroup with Marr and Ian Brown. He needs to mix it up, then bring it on down to Oasis.

Douglas | 8/31/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Radiohead equal to the Beatles? That’s crazy!
Radiohead are not even equal to Pink Floyd and that’s already a couple tiers down from the Beatles.
Radiohead make fascinating music. But to compare with the best you need songs that take hold in the mind beyond sophisticated production.

SmarterAmerican | 8/31/2009, 4:45 pm EST

Hopefully this is just another Noel “Well, f— you, I’m going on holiday” tantrum… but if it’s not, then we’ve lost one of the only worthwhile groups of the past 20 years.

Noel Gallagher is a d—, but he’s also a supremely talented songwriter who throws away songs that other bands would build their careers around.

And when it comes down to it, the quality of the music is what matters– not what the songwriter thinks of your fave band. Who cares?

Oasis, you will be missed.

Now on with the tweens all hopped up on Mountain Dew and Jolly Ranchers, screeching about Radiohead and throwing tantrums because no one else cares about their opinions…

Chris | 8/31/2009, 4:46 pm EST

At some point you can not say this band is “better” than another. Radiohead, the Beatles, Oasis, all awesome, and all legendary. If any of you doubt the influence and legacy of Oasis, look at footage of some shows in Manchester and around England. This band OWNED the U.K. for a time. Their songs (as JW said) are not just songs they are anthems, they are the backbone of the second British invasion and they are the soundtrack of 90’s youth. Though their style did not change, that does not mean that their creativity stagnated. They are and were, and always will be a ROCK and ROLL band, that’s it. There are bands I don’t like but I still recognize their contribution to rock and the legacy they left, so don’t be ignorant. Noel and Liam always fought, but this is natural with creative argument, and this is a human drama, one that we were all invited to listen to and love. Cheers until next time. Go the Brothers Gallagher

Anonymous | 8/31/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Bob – yes, I prefer early Oasis to Zeppelin. I’m not a Zep fan at all, I kind of hate them actually – can’t take Plant’s voice.

He always sounded like a castrated banshee wailing about his lemon being squeezed. Not my thing…..

Not that I hold it against you if you dig ‘em. I am sure I love bands you might not.

I don’t want this to be a “my teenage music is better than your teenage music” thing……I was just trying to get across why Oasis meant so much to me…….and to others.

Kev | 8/31/2009, 4:57 pm EST

One thing is for certain…..what UK band that started in the early 90’s could have an important band member leave and draw this much attention in 2009 on rollingstone.com??!!! No one other than Oasis! Oasis was a great band and they DID break America. 3 albums were top 5 on the charts,3 platinum albums w/ a total of 7 million albums in the U.S. sold…..That’s pretty good. ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ &’Dig Out Your Soul’ (their last 2 albums) were pretty good and going along with their debut ‘Definitely Maybe’ and ‘Morning Glory’ including all those great early B-sides, they were really good. You haters should give them a listen!Hell ‘The Masterplan’ was a B-side album that is better than most bands best album.

Radiohead??? Let’s get out our logarithim tables, stroke our beards and wonder where the term ‘Rock ‘N Roll’ fits in?! PS I do like ‘The Bends’!

Tweedo | 8/31/2009, 5:41 pm EST

I’ll Take Noel’s side anyday. He’s right. Liam can go worry about his winter collection now. Maybe he should call a Spice Girl to help him out with that… Liam only wrote one decent song in his life(songbird). Now, without Noel, I’m afraid he will drink his fat ass to death.

Nashville Writer | 8/31/2009, 6:03 pm EST

As a huge Oasis fan I am shocked and deflated by the news. But I believe that the large amounts of UK vs US comments that have been posted is well warranted and probably good for all. As an American I envy the UK music scene. American radio is dead. Unless you live in a hipster city like NY, LA, or Seattle your odds of catching a great track on the airwaves is zilch. We reward mediocrity with soldout shows and millions of sold albums. I live and work in Nashville, Country music is dead. Talented singer/songwriters toil away in obscurity at the Blue Bird and Limelight while no talent ass clowns track annoyingly outrageous cuts from writers looking for quick buck. I assisted engineered a country albums for a mid level star recently and at lunch one day he discussed how disappointed he was to be unable to write and record true songs and that to make a living in the industry it was necessary to only cuts songs about beer, redneck antics, or Jesus. It’s a flipping shame.
Is there good music stateside? Absolutely.
Great bands are all around. It’s just that no one is listening.
Band like Death Cab or the Secret Machines get nice blurbs in the press but not near the fame of….Nickleback, Nickleback, or Nickleback.

F’n shame.

I must also not the high quality of the British Music Press.

I’ve quit subscribing to the RS (I’m very liberal but I don’t read you for your political opinions) and Spin (I couldn’t give to sh*ts what designer some NYC underground band is wearing).
Instead I pay double the fees for Q and NWE.

Peace

really? | 8/31/2009, 6:29 pm EST

…..and then everyone remembered that it’s just a band, and not a proxy for US-British relations or a platform for some silly Americans and some equally silly Brits wasting their time talking about music instead of listening to it. Love American music, whatever that is, love British music, whatever that is, love good music and shut the fuck up.

TOM SMITH | 8/31/2009, 7:23 pm EST

As a musician in a band, I have two steadfast rules I follow: NEVER FORM A BAND WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER and NEVER FORM A BAND WITH BROTHERS WHETHER THEY BE YOUR OWN OR SOMEONE ELSE’S! It never works out-trust me, I know from personal experience! Didn’t Ray and Dave Davies from the Kinks teach us anything?

poughkeepsiejohn | 8/31/2009, 7:29 pm EST

So many people gripe about how Oasis were ripping off The Beatles. Yet, few realize that Oasis was influenced by a lot of great bands and not just The Beatles.

You can hear The Who in “Round Are Way” and “Some Might Say”. You hear a lot of The Kinks in “She’s Electric” and “Shout It Out Loud”. You hear Slade in “Digsy’s Diner” and “Stay Young”. You can even hear The Buzzcocks in “Fade Away” and “Headshrinker”. You hear Mott The Hoople in “Stop Crying Your Hear Out” and “Where Did It All Wrong?” You hear a little Bowie in “Go Let It Out” and “Don’t Go Away”. There’s even a bit of T. Rex in “Cigarettes and Alcohol”. They also knew a good song when they heard it. Such as Slade’s “Cum On Feel The Noize”. Or David Bowie’s “Heroes”. They even covered Neil Young’s “My My Hey Hey (Into The Black)”.

Is it a sad day for music? Yes. But fortunately, we still have the music, lots of it. Now, if only Liam will grow up a little bit.

Oasis were a fantstic band but i think this is a good thing. I just want a album that Noel writes all the songs on it again and thats not going to happen in oasis. All the best stuff on DOYS was Noels, liams written a couple of good songs but Andy and Gem cant live up to Noels high standard.
Bring on Noel solo.

alex | 9/1/2009, 8:34 am EST

sad news. oasis were amazing but im looking forwward to Noel solo

Rollingstoned | 9/1/2009, 8:47 am EST

Michael – There’ll never be a shortage of people who don’t get things either. Maybe you’d just need the band to “act” smarter like say Radiohead so you could feel good about liking them so you could call other people dumb.

Just sayin’ ……

First of all Oasis, like the Ramones have a real wit to them. You could call the Ramones “dumb” too and you’d be wrong about that also.

Second, this is Rock and Roll, it’s not Mensa meeting.

Beatles wannabes | 9/1/2009, 10:47 am EST

Thank God this piece of shit band Oasis is finally finished.

MB | 9/1/2009, 11:06 am EST

Ok look. Oasis is a really good band. I know in the UK they are much bigger. To those who feel America is not up on music, well Americas entertainment is not up on music but specific people like myself do know great music and grew up on great music. I agree Americas society is shot and its ashame that the radio play nothing but garbage, but do not sit there and say we are the only country that plays this stuff. Britney spears sells out concerts in London faster then they do here in America! We are all surrounded by this filth not just America…………Oh btw Radiohead is better then Oasis

MB | 9/1/2009, 11:21 am EST

Oh and for the comments earlier I do agree Zepplin is a good band but they are in fact overrated. I think as a 4 piece hard rock band the Who were much better!

John Nada | 9/1/2009, 11:56 am EST

Who cares about any of this? No matter who you’re a fan of the “entertainment industry” owns your minds anyhow. Music’s been dead on both sides of the atlantic for at least 2 decades. Want good music? Learn to play an instrument of your own and no matter if you suck or not at least you’ll get soemthing out of it for you.

One of the best | 9/1/2009, 12:37 pm EST

I doubt this is really the end for Oasis. They’ve survived all these years and have kept putting out great music.

They will live on like the Stones and the Who.

Too bad some people could only see the side show that went on with Liam and Noel and not see Oasis for what they truly were;A top notch rock n roll band.

Live forever OASIS !

Go Solo Noel | 9/1/2009, 1:17 pm EST

I think Noel should go it alone. Liam has been dead weight since the beginning. Noel has the songwriting and the better voice.

Peter Bonetti, NY | 9/1/2009, 5:19 pm EST

Oasis is more than the music. Their attitude is expressed in the songs. They give their fans self belief. They are amazing live as they have the choruses people want to sing and people leave on such a high. Best band of my lifetime and i’m 29. Hope they make it back together. NOEL IS GOD.

Its a freak out! | 9/1/2009, 5:24 pm EST

News Flash:
Noel Joins Guns n’ Roses, and Axl sells it all to Disney…
New ride coming in 2010, or 2011, or 2012… Well, at somepoint…

HAcksaw Jim Duggan | 9/1/2009, 6:51 pm EST

Ive been drinking beer and now I love oasis, and Stu, And England.

Cj | 9/1/2009, 7:26 pm EST

Only an idiot would say Zep was overrated AND the Who was better.

Ocker | 9/2/2009, 3:49 am EST

Ignorant shites and their negative comments. Read a magazine why don’t you and perhaps you’d realise what Oasis have contributed to the international music scene over the years, who they’ve influenced etc.
Whether you like them or not, they have left their mark on the music scene.
And to make an absurd comment aimed at money. Again, do your research…..Noel was bringing in US$50m plus after What’s the story..? was released.

All the Oasis haters have taken the time to read an article about a band that is “sh*t, past their use by date, etc” according to them. And then even found time to write a negative comment.
Forget the Gallaghers being losers….!!

Let’s hope your boss doesn’t catch on- you douchebags obviously don’t work very hard!!

stu | 9/2/2009, 8:18 am EST

lol yeah really hacksaw, guess shows u got sense of humour.but cynic in me doubts it,but it really dont matter not gonna get in2 another childish slagging match with ya .like what ever you want and be happy

Sharon | 9/2/2009, 11:28 am EST

Noel is Oasis. He should go it alone. He’s a genius.

HAcksaw Jim Duggan | 9/2/2009, 8:19 pm EST

Stu your a good sport

Marcus TBassist | 9/3/2009, 12:12 am EST

Honestly, being a longtime fan of Oasis it does not surprise me to see the group flail. The way I figure it though Noel is just showing brotherly love. I don’t really take the press release or the breakup seriously. And I’m hopeful to see a reunion tour in six months to a year. Fair enough if Noel needs a break too. If I was cooped in a band with my brother for almost fourteen years I would feel exactly the same way.

stu | 9/3/2009, 6:05 am EST

no worrys hacksaw,we both got out of order.but hey not worth it life more important.you take care and same 2 everyone else on here

Dan | 9/11/2009, 10:36 am EST

To all moaners, haters, and general dicks enjoying the momment.

Let us the real OASIS fans have are time for reflection, for we are in morning.

Love them or hate them, Music is a lesser place with out Noel & liam on the same stage or in the same studio.

This is not the end of Noel & Liam or OASIS.

LIVE FOREVER!! OASIS OASIS OASIS

Lacy | 10/1/2009, 1:25 pm EST

When my life was at rock bottom, I listened to Oasis-and somehow connected with their music unlike I have with any other band or musician. There are songs that never got put on albums that totally turned my life around. ‘Whatever’ is a song that you can’t find anywhere in the U.S. anymore (or at least I’ve had a hell of a time finding it)…and ‘Half the World Away’ is another great track. Oasis is real music. Liam is the where the band started…Noel was actually the last member. Liam has one of the most tantalizing voices in music history.(And also so SEXY : ) Noel’s song writing hits my heart and made me truly love Oasis. In my opinion, they surpassed the Beatles a long time ago. Don’t get pissy people….its just my opinion and has to do with my own life experiences. I would have given anything to see them live once…but never had the cash. : (
I wish I could begin to explain the way their music made me feel (still makes me feel). Siblings will always argue. They’re rock stars. It was bound to happen, but I’m sad that it did. Fortunately, my job is tranferring me to our flagship store in London… I’m hoping to run into the brothers (or A brother). Life will then be complete.
It was never about the money with them…if so-they would have been busting their asses to promote and sell in the US. They hated the US… It wasn’t because they couldn’t conquer the music world here-because trust me, the bands you know today wouldn’t stand a chance. Its hard to find real musicians anymore-its a shame they split.

Fine whatever | 10/6/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Okay, man I have to say I’m an oasis fan.I love their song.
their music is graet.no matter they such a dick or what.
thoes who don’t know it
please stop saying a bullshit about their music, okay?

james | 10/12/2009, 11:17 pm EST

well, anyone who’s actually heard oasis and recognises music would say that oasis sound alot more like the la’s, the real people, t. rex, slade and the stone roses than the beatles. Its just a media manipulation, accelerated by the stupidity of yanks. go listen to definitely maybe any yank, and tell me that sounds like the beatles.

Noel Gallager Fan | 10/16/2009, 6:58 am EST

its a shame but looking forward to the noel solo album!

val | 10/22/2009, 2:25 am EST

dear americans, all of you are fucking idiots!listen yours britney and shout up! oasis -best band in the world of all time!
from russia with love

Star Sail | 11/9/2009, 10:46 pm EST

… I really need to say this. Anyone who says that Oasis are most influenced by any band that isn’t the Beatles is no fan. Noel himself acknowledges the blatant and numerous homages to the Beatles in the music.

And, for all you Europeans out there trying to blame the perpetuation of that stereotype on Americans, it was actually your media that came up with it first. Do your research. Or even read the Wiki article. With THREE citations, the article states, and I quote, “Oasis were most heavily influenced by The Beatles. This influence was frequently labelled as an “obsession” by the British media.”

Yes, the British media. Not the American media. You know why? Most of the American media hasn’t given two shits about Oasis since Wonderwall.

I don’t know why this annoys me so much, I’m Canadian, but it’s still very irritating, to see Europeans continually insisting that Americans are stupid and that the American media is full of idiots, when it was their own media that started perpetuating the vast majority of these “Oasis stereotypes.”
