DJ AM Found Dead in New York

DJ AM, born Adam Goldstein, has been found dead in his New York apartment, police sources tell TMZ. The 36-year-old DJ, mostly known for his work with Blink-182’s Travis Barker and handling the music at big-name celebrity hot-spots, last tweeted some Grandmaster Flash lyrics from “New York, New York” — “New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems” — on August 25th. Sources tell TMZ he hadn’t been heard from in several days, and police broke down the door of his apartment when a friend knocked and got no answer. His rep issued a statement that confirms his death and adds, “The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. Out of respect for his family and loved ones, please respect their privacy at this time.”

See pictures of DJ AM with Travis Barker, Fergie, Jay-Z and more.

The New York Post reports that drug paraphernalia was found in the musician’s Lafayette Street apartment. Goldstein spoke openly about his past struggles with drug and food addiction, telling Glamour in a revealing interview that he started freebasing cocaine when he was 20 years old. “For the next four years, that’s about all I did — with the exception of deejaying, which I’d been obsessed with ever since I saw Herbie Hancock do the song ‘Rockit’ at the Grammy Awards,” he told the magazine.

He admitted his father’s verbal abuse made him turn to food, and he was obese by age 10. He started attending recovery meetings after a suicide attempt at 24, and underwent gastric bypass surgery at 30. After his surgery, he became a gossip-page staple for his high-profile relationships with Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore. But he remained devoted to his music, beginning a partnership with Barker after having briefly been a member of Crazy Town and contributing to albums by Papa Roach and Will Smith.

Look back at more musicians lost before their time.

Almost exactly one year ago, Goldstein and Barker narrowly survived a Learjet crash in South Carolina that claimed the lives of the two pilots and two passengers. Barker recalled the harrowing moments during the pair’s escape in a recent Rolling Stone profile: “I was lying next to AM as the plane was exploding, and I was screaming, ‘Are we alive?’ ”

In April, Goldstein signed a deal with MTV to host Gone Too Far, an intervention-style reality show where young people with drug addictions would get the chance to turn their lives around. Us Weekly reports that he had begun to promote the series last month.

Barker’s on-and-off-girlfriend Shanna Moakler was one of the first to respond to the news online, tweeting, “My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends.” ?uestlove added, “It’s one thing to lose a teacher I never met. But it’s some other shit to lose a teacher I knew,” and John Mayer posted, “In complete shock.”

He had a second shot at life and he continued using drugs? What an idiot!

DJMackDaddyDB | 8/28/2009, 9:24 pm EST

Poor little boy got all fucked up because Daddy scolded him as a boy. Children are starving around the world and he is fighting a food addiction. AM’s BFF Twitter Tard John Mayer should follow the leader.

Talk about an ignored “wake up call” with his plane crash – where he miraculously was also saved from another deadly illness… AM chose the loser’s path for the last time. The Devil finally got his morsel.

Kalyn | 8/28/2009, 9:26 pm EST

Hasn’t anyone ever heard the phrase “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all!” Geez people just because you never heard of him doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to be treated with respect. So you don’t care, don’t comment!! People like you are the reason the world is the way it is. All I knew about DJ AM is that he dated Nicole Richie but what I do know is that he has is a family who is mourning the loss of their loved one. My deepest sympathy for his friends & family. May he rest in peace.

Krej | 8/28/2009, 9:27 pm EST

Such horrible news. All my prayers are with his family and friends. He was great at what he did,and it’s very upsetting to see people being so harsh about his death.Even if it turns out it was drug related it doesnt mean people should bash him.drugs are a hard thing to overcome.Rest In Peace Adam.

simonsayz | 8/28/2009, 10:51 pm EST

this is a pledge to all people with fame: if u have any bit of fame….there should be a public piss test to test u for drugs..too many youngsters look up to famous people. hoew bout at those openings, where they walk in and take a picture…they should then be escorted to a room to piss test..or an annual piss testing event..let freekin Diidy host it…starts come in, have a drink, eat..gett piss tested for drugs, then exit…all proceeds benefit some drug program, and the results get posted publicly. Whoever tess positive for drugs, has to go to rehab…

R.I.P. DJ AM. You were a talented individual and you will be missed.

Kim | 8/29/2009, 12:06 am EST

People don’t understand drug addictions and mental afflictions until they undergo them themselves. A strong person can be brought to their knees by either of those things. A drug addiction is a lifetime addiction, depression is not something you CHOOSE in any form, and being in a horrific plane crash is something nobody would wish on another.

If he did indeed die as a result of his addiction, or state of mind, how in the world is that cause to ridicule him? I don’t defend drug usage at all, but I can only imagine the stress he has had in his life and how the last year affected him.

I wish, if he indeed turned back to drugs in the end, that someone had been able to reach out to him. He seemed like a nice person, just trying to do what he loved. I greatly hope that he is now at peace.

I loved listening to him play other peoples music. Almost as much as I like watching Travis Barker pretend to be a good drummer!

Makaveli Apprentice | 8/29/2009, 1:42 am EST

To the people that say fuck you, or “I never heard of him, so why should i care,” or, “he used drugs”, who gives a SHIT! He was a human being, and I think he is a bigger loss than if all of u muthafuckas were to die all at once at the same moment, “I’ll piss in his grave?” What kinda shit is that? You hypocrites, You post these things and yet u keep “Anonymous” afraid to say who you are but quick to disrespect a human that lived a life just as you live yours, so what if he did drugs? Drugs are a harsh thing, and maybe to sum ppl, THAT IS THE ONLY THING THEY CAN TURN TO! You guys probably never had a struggle in your life so thats why u see this and think that its not sad news. I hope he is watching from the gates of the kingdom of heaven and remembers who each and every one of you are, so that when you show your face, you will be denied entrance while you see Adam seated at the right hand of the FATHER!!!!

cakeslanger | 8/29/2009, 1:55 am EST

It is truly sad that people would be so harsh.Anybody in recovery knows that we only have one day at a time…and if not for the grace of God-there go I.
Rest in Peace Adam.

Wow. Guy survives a PLANE CRASH only to kill himself with crack.
Fragile stuff.

Sad.sad.sad.

crack dealer | 8/29/2009, 2:06 am EST

I got to interview him once and I asked him if he had time to do one thing before he died what it be. he looked me right in the eyes and said,I would take a big ole hit off my crack pipe! At the very least he was a man of his word.

shan.non | 8/29/2009, 2:51 am EST

Unreal. He survives a fiery plane wreck, but perishes by way of hittin’ a fiery crack pipe 1 yr later. Life is strange.
When it’s your time, it’s your time.

DJ LouiLove | 8/29/2009, 3:26 am EST

I was an amateur DJ for about six years till that monday night i went to see grand master am @ club sutra. The next day i bought myself two turntables & discovered my true passion in life. Thank you Grand Master AM for everything that you did for me. RIP

Mandie | 8/29/2009, 3:28 am EST

I’m SURE it was opiates, not crack. In my educated opinion, painkillers and heroin were his addiction from the get-go; and I’m sure that he had to be on plenty of them (prescribed by Dr.’s) after that plane crash…just to help him recover. It was a astronomically horrific crash for him (OR ANYONE!)to live through, and the strong pain meds would not be out of the norm as far as effective treatment and healing go. What I think is that he couldn’t handle it, and when the time came for them to try and cut back or ween him off those drugs…it was too late. He was most likely already re-hooked and maybe even shooting heroin to compensate. I do not know how this could be gotten around in this circumstance; how the Dr.s treatig him for his crash injuries could have effectively treated him without using the opiates…and I’m sure his addiction was not their primary concern anyway. It’s just really sad…and the fact of the matter is that when I read the People magazine article at the beginning of the year..you know..bout how well he was doing after the accident…I did think to myself “I’m sure he’s taking an awful lot of painkillers, and that could be Kryptonite to a former addict.” I just feel for is friends and family so much. This is horrible!

Karma Police | 8/29/2009, 3:33 am EST

You guys realize that this guy (as well as Travis Barker) sued the estates of the pilots who died from his plane crash. I’m sorry, but that’s pretty sh*tty.

northof60 | 8/29/2009, 4:12 am EST

Seriously. AM pioneered and took DJin’ to a whole new level. He was part of the movement that revolutionized the way we listen to music.

He had problems. Everyone has them. It’s truly tragic to lose such an important and influential artist to such a terrible and ugly thing as the drugs out there today.

tom | 8/29/2009, 4:26 am EST

This guy battled obesity and won and then went on to survive a tragic plane crash. He was such an inspiration to many. I’m not looking for excuses on why he took cocaine or pain relievers, but Post Traumatic Stress coupled with burns pain can be such a dick to handle.
So haters, stop posting insensitive comments. So what if you do not know who he is, so what if he is not as big as Jackson or Hendrix. Happy now you get to criticize a dead man.

polobus82 | 8/29/2009, 5:51 am EST

What an eye opener. I’m familiar to the party scene, never did crack but coke is all over the place. What a pitty, dude was only 36… That ain’t right. I’m ouy ,cuz this just gettin out of hand. Gl to everybody that realizes the time has come. Love, PB.

VirgoInVertigo | 8/29/2009, 9:23 am EST

Sad stuff. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Things like this really make you think.

The Gibs | 8/29/2009, 9:32 am EST

Shouldn’t RS be covering musicians instead of rich, entitled guys who play records? Everything I’ve read about him is disgusting. And he has the nerve to sue the estates of the pilots – a couple of people who died flying his lame ass around, not to mention the most overrated drummer on the planet, travis Barker.

I know every life is precious, but this guy didn’t contribute, he didn’t do anything that merits such attention.

And he survived a plane crash! Shouldn’t that have been a wake-up call to get off the pipe?

Adbacb | 8/29/2009, 9:56 am EST

Everybody who thinks these people have it made, the truth is all around.
Everybody has the same problems only the zero’s are different.

sheriphotog | 8/29/2009, 10:12 am EST

First, my heart felt prayers go out to his mom and friends.

Second, for the idiot who posted that he sued the pilots families, your an idiot, who does not know the facts, he sued the insurance company, not the pilots families.

Third, let’s all take the time to think!!!!! Slow down and think about what you are saying and DOING. We all have feelings, we are all HUMAN. Cut yourself a break, and just LIVE.

GJ | 8/29/2009, 10:38 am EST

To all of the people who had nothing but negative comments to make, I’m so very saddened by your cruelty and lack of compassion. Above all else he was a human, someone’s child, and a child of God. How dare you disrespect a human life! You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

RIP DJ AM, you are loved and missed.

waste | 8/29/2009, 10:39 am EST

after surviving a plane crash, he wastes his second chance at life on drugs. so many people would have done anything for a second chance. he took his and threw it down the toilet.

Zinc | 8/29/2009, 10:47 am EST

Goldstein wasn’t suing the estates of the two pilots in the crash. He was suing their insurance company, which is a very different thing. He made it very clear he would never sue the estates.

He was a great DJ—which takes talent, whether or not you consider turntables instruments. I think of them as paint brushes.

The cruelty shown by some here is so unnecessary, and shows how easy it is to be a jerk when you can hide behind a screen.

cr | 8/29/2009, 10:53 am EST

for someone to say “so many people would have done anything for a second chance. he took his and threw it down the toilet. ” they apparently do not understand what it means to survive a traumatic event, or the disease of addiction. Both are very powerful and unless you have experienced either STFU

killtheindustry | 8/29/2009, 11:25 am EST

Drugs are really cool… all DJ’s should do a lot of them … and end up the same way… same with the creators of Guitar Hero and RockBand…

mikeky | 8/29/2009, 11:58 am EST

ah, yes. the wonderful posters on the internet. somebody passes away and the shitstains come out of the woodwork.

folks–if you didn’t like him or his music, fine. BUT FOR GOD’S SAKE–HE’S DEAD. HAVE SOME RESPECT. it’s not hard to act like a decent human being. STOP SAYING NASTY AND STUPID SHIT. there is such a thing as karma. stop playing with it.

Hey Zinc | 8/29/2009, 11:59 am EST

That’s a copout. They both had other avenues to pursue, but listing the pilots and their estates as part of the insurance company suit was done and unneccessary. Karma’s a bitch.

Talia | 8/29/2009, 12:18 pm EST

what is wrong with everyone? really if you dont care and have nothing good to say why comment at all? DJ AM was an incredible talent. No one is perfect, but he sure came close. RIP DJ AM. You are hard person to let go of.

“Let that crackhead rot. Anybody who thinks this is a tragedy is a dope.” Anonymous

A Person died and you think that it is funny that you say something like that? He was a person that mistakes, but who’s right is it to say that his mistakes outweigh yours? I will admit, I didnt listen to his music or pay any attention to him in the tabloids, but I know that he was a person and that any death should be mourned, including his.

killtheindustry | 8/29/2009, 3:47 pm EST

He didn’t “die”… he slowly killed himself with self induced mass stupidity. Maybe he couldn’t handle the fact that his anorexic ex had a kid with someone who actually plays a real instrument.

Wow | 8/29/2009, 3:50 pm EST

“DJ AM was an incredible talent. No one is perfect, but he sure came close. RIP DJ AM. You are hard person to let go of.”

Yeah, he sure came close except for that crackpipe getting in his way. Look, no one should wish death on anyone else. But let’s gain a little perspective, OK? This guy got to live the highlife and he submerged himself in it. He treated plenty of people like an elitist bastard and eventually, it all comes around. You got what you wanted, DJ AM. That sweet high that killed you.

Lisa | 8/29/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Addiction is such a powerful thing. DJ AM worked hard to get sober and stayed that way for more than 10 years. My prayers go out to his family and friends. I can only imagine that he must have been in an awful place to have relapsed this way.

Mr.Marcus | 8/29/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Condolences to DJ AM’s family. It’s tough losing anyone we love.
And for those cats posting negative thoughts for the hell of it. Think beyond now and when it happens in your family and it will…would you want people to do it you or your family?
Drugs or no drugs. Death is death. There is no point making people feel worse for the lost.

anonymous | 8/29/2009, 4:17 pm EST

R.I.P. to a human being, regardless of fame.

Shame on all of you who are posting hateful and negative comments, karma is the biggest bitch in the world and you will be dealt with accordingly.

Reality Check | 8/29/2009, 4:25 pm EST

DJ AM chose his life. He chose to remain in the spotlight, date whores, booze it up, smoke it up. REGARDLESS OF ADDICTION, he kept himself in this lifestyle, and to paraphrase James Hetfield, it became his deathstyle. Sad? Sure, death is sad. All of the previous DJ AM fans should send a special shoutout in their prayers to Michael Jackson too. Right?

I love people that get on here and give a shout out to his family like you new him, probably the same people that voted for Obama, dumb asses!

boohoo | 8/29/2009, 5:43 pm EST

there are less fortunate people who struggle to make ends meet everyday. there are people dying on the streets of every major city in the world. this doucheflake, who made tons of money playing other people’s records (what talented!), struggled with obesity and a near death experience so he could continue hitting a crack pipe. and we’re all supposed to be upset by that. no thanks. there’s an endless list of people ahead of him that deserve our thoughts & prayers.

To Guest | 8/29/2009, 6:05 pm EST

No, but they are probably the same ones who make fun of Michael Jackson now that he’s dead.

FUCK the haters!!! | 8/29/2009, 6:24 pm EST

you guys are sooo fucked in the head… it would be funny if you would write these negative comments about your family you self centered fucks…. But once someone close to you dies, watch out, now its serious… death is serious regardless if you know them personally or not… stupid fucks… probably red necks

Shakes the Clown | 8/29/2009, 6:51 pm EST

Looks like someone did too much first hand research for his show. Maybe this will be a better lesson to the MTV (musicless TV) generation. Doubt it, though. This sycophant felt he had a sense of entitlement and also thought he was invincible. So much for that theory.

Haha | 8/29/2009, 7:49 pm EST

What a chode! What could possibly be worse than being balls-deep in Nicole Richie’s ass? You should have killed yourself then. as you came inside her mouth. Seriously, this guy is a fucking moron and a nobody. Everyone fucking dies, boo fucking hoo. He gets no sympathy from me. Stupid fucking drug-addicted scum. Michael Jackson, DJ AM, and Heath Ledger are all idiots. My mom always said I was a soft-spoken, gentle lady. She was wrong.

reflection | 8/29/2009, 8:38 pm EST

DJ AM is a mirror. He reflects the the culture of addiction, abuse and consumption. You criticize him, you criticize yourself. You’re all in denial. Just like the media reflects a partisan citizenry that can’t think for itself, and is always blaming “they” or “them” instead on looking at themselves.

To everyone bashing him | 8/29/2009, 8:52 pm EST

If it were your mom or dad or bother or sister or child or anyone you loved and cared about, you would never say “good, they got what they deserved”. As a matter of fact, you may have a close friend or family member secretly abusing drugs and you probably don’t have a clue. So before you talk smack about people with issues, especially dead people who can’t defend themselves, take a good look in the mirror first. Like others have said, karma’s a bitch and what happened to him could even happen to you. Do you have any idea how many people get hooked on drugs not because of drug dealers, but because of their doctors? It’s as simple as falling ill or getting an injury, feeling constant physical pain and being immobile, becoming depressed and getting hooked on painkillers and antidepressants. And it escalates from there. Sometimes people will move on to the harder stuff like cocaine and heroin. Michael Jackson and Heath Ledger are perfect examples of that. And nobody ever thought of them as being drug addicts until their tragic deaths. So before you laugh at other people’s problems, remember how fickle life can be and how you can find yourself in situations you never dreamed of being in.

Fear Driven Media | 8/29/2009, 9:24 pm EST

Dude pioneered nothing. He played other peoples music, was rich, and continued to be a hopeless drug addict even after a miracle plane crash survival. Who cares? This isn’t news. Who would idolize a DJ for Christ’s sake?

Other things to worry about people. Like terrorists and evil politicians, etc.

Wake the hell up fools!

angelabdreaming | 8/29/2009, 9:36 pm EST

So sick and uncool for anyone to hide behind a computer and say such fucked up stuff about anyone deceased, famous or not. Karma will plow into you like a truck. It’s not just what you do; also what you SAY.

This has finally reached a point (with a disstinct emphasis on DJ AM and his recent passing) where I can see the emergence of social constructs built and bent for different results…I am very satisfied and a bit amused at the diversity and creativity of the senssitivity different folks have…and that so many people have an opnion of DJAM or Nicole, etc. but really know jack and simply play off the current whatever…potentially super lame.

Admiral Squirrel | 8/30/2009, 4:17 am EST

Ordinarily, I’d take a pass on criticizing a dead person, but heaping praise on this guy just glorifies the junkie lifestyle. This wasn’t a tragedy, this was a predictable and preventable event. You can be certain his “friends” who are wailing on Twitter knew he’d resumed using, but looked the other way. Celebs who OD and die young all help add to the glorified “mystique” of drugs. In truth, it’s an ugly way to go and a huge waste. Nothing to see here, move on…

Shame on those who judge the life of any person who has passed on…self-righteousness is so unattractive. Who are you talking to on here anyway…

Mr.Marcus | 8/30/2009, 1:22 pm EST

As an example he is one person, but closer to home we’ve all lost someone and some of us get mad when we do. Others morn and move on, a few change their lives, but we’re all affected by death. Our reaction is varied. I think for the most part people here acknowledge his death, but we tend to relate it to something more personal in our lives. Losing someone to drugs pisses us all off, cause it’s a life wasted as we see it. Be better to get high off love, but that takes forgiveness-not much here even less in the world.
So I guess drugs will always win out…

This was someones son, friend, grandson, boyfriend, brother. Do any of you ever stop to think about the things you say and write. Your words can either do one of two things. Hurt or help. Think before you speak. We have to answer to God for everything we say and do in this life. It seems like people always kick folks harder when they are down or dead.

MBO chick | 8/30/2009, 8:53 pm EST

This is such a sad, sad event. The people who have posted awful comments on this page will have karma to answer to. I obviously never knew AM, but I work with drug addicts and have seen the destruction that it causes to so many people. He was obviously struggling with some deep issues and didn’t feel as though he had anyone to turn to. It is such a tragedy for someone to feel so completely helpless & hopeless that he must drown his pain in such a way.

wow | 8/30/2009, 9:58 pm EST

freedom of speech/rhythm | 8/31/2009, 1:36 am EST

reading these posts sadden me because while freedom of speech is the base of democracy, there is also this thing called courtesy, whether you think a death is deserved or tears should be saved for the oppressed and overcome, an artist is an angel to those who share that visceral desire to create. how many musicians (ahem hendrix, jerry, janis, biggie, tupac, kurt cobain, bradly noel, elliott smith) have we lost to faults of their own; drugs and guns and sadness. let’s not lose sight of who these people are, artists and inspirations. r.i.p. djam, spinn’ circles in the sky… thoughts to the fam/trvs x

I can not believe the absolute direspect for human life that some of you have. I am a big believer in freedom of speech, but honestly if you do not have anything good and true to say then please do not say it at all.

The death of a contributor to our generation music has passed suddenly and people think it is an open door to start slagging them off.

I’m sorry – but just imagine that this is one of your family members and imagine how you would feel. God willing you will someday feel that wrath of Karma.

I feel sorry for all of you – you obviously lead sad existences.

RIP DJ AM – there are many REAL people in the REAL world that appreciate your contribution to this life.

For people to sit here and kick a dead man is just lower than low. Until you have walked in a man’s shoes, who are you to judge them? That is what is wrong with this world now. Where is the heart, the compassion, the love for people? Where has it all gone. It is sickening, the comments I am reading on here. Whether or not you agree with how Adam lived his life, he was still someone’s son, brother and friend.

I dont understand this… So many people writing horrible, disgusting comments. if you dislike this person and have such a strong negative opinion about them then why even take the time to post a comment at all? If you care so little about dj am’s life then why waste your time at the computer reading this article? What are you trying to prove? What good comes out of trashing someone and degrading them after their death, regardless of how they died? Its repulsive how much hate there is in people. RIP DJ AM

In Response to “Noer’s” Post: First off all let me make this clear, RESPRECT. Second: FUCK YOU and Karma is a bitch as many others have stated. Finally, if you haven’t been thru a struggle with an addiction you have no CLUE what “he gets.” Have some respect and don’t read into the media so much as much of what they say and you say is FUCKING BULLSHIT along with thousands of other posts from clueless people like you assuming things about someone whom you never even had a chance to hear DJ, etc. You are a complete piece of shit and I think you need to understand that 10’s of million Americans battle addiction every day and I am sure you are battling one yourself. It is a shame that you won’t ever be strong enough to realize what it is, speak about it, admit it, face it and try and fight it. Lastly when addiction takes over your life let me assure you one thing…You won’t have multiple sites dedicated to people posting blogs about your death? Have some feelings for this human being;s loved ones, friends, and family you piece of shit.

Get Educated | 9/14/2009, 11:37 pm EST

I had never heard of DJ AM until his death, but he was a human being, and deserves respect no matter what the circumstances were surrounding his death. None of us are perfect, we are all addicted to something; drugs, cigarettes, food, being in shape, etc. which all causes dyer effects on our physical and psychological well being. I am not condoning drug use, but everyone make mistakes and everyone has different coping skills. For all of you saying that he was given a second chance and surviving death the first time should have deterred drug use; You are very wrong! You see I am a psychology student, and there is this thing called adaptation in which we learn to deal, or destress, life events and challenges, good and bad. Now imagine waking up every night watching people dying around you and thinking to yourself why am I here? and carrying that guilt on a daily basis. I think you would probably resume your old lifestyle as well. Please carefully analyze information before you comment on it. I find it absolutely amazing how undereducated some people are. Do you know how ignorant you sound?

Tae | 9/15/2009, 12:02 am EST

OMG i cant believe all of the mean things people are saying. This is someones child someones friend. Who are you to judge. I am a mother and i dont care what he was doing or how he passed it still hurts the same. He has friends and family members that will be reading all of this………..Before I go to bed I will say a prayer for his family and also for the ones on here that have written all of the hurtful comments I will also pray that when you pass away when ever that may be when your family or friends goggle you it will put a smile on there face and for just one moment the pain will be erased because all of the good things people had to say. God Bless You I am truly sorry for your lost. I didnt know him and it seems that most of the ones writting the negative comments didnt either, but you do and thats all that matters. R.I.P

Steve | 9/16/2009, 11:09 pm EST

He messed up and now his talent like him will be laid to rest. Still the meanness toward his death is very much reflective of the ugliness that America and Americas has become. There is a cancer in our society and it has to be isolated and eradicated before it destroy us all. Yes! He was dumb to mess with drugs after getting a second shot at life after the plane accident. But he paid the ultimate price and I hope we all will learn from this.

KIm Cook | 9/17/2009, 12:50 am EST

The one thing that is obvious is that the internet had allowed ignorant people the ability to have a voice. This is perhaps the worst thing about free speech. I am extremely offended with the negative talk I just suffered through just now about Adam. I never knew him, I know his mixes, and I know music, and no one can say he was not extremely good with music. Beyond that, to all those who have the gaul to insult his profession and lifestyle … WTF are you doing with your life that is so impressive or unique? You obviously don’t even know him so like any celebrity, you really have no right to project your own anger onto this matter at liberty. Anyway, all I know is I liked his music mixes and from the people I know he was a really kind person and loved a lot. So, please refrain from anymore hatred. Karma….think about that airheads. You choose to do drugs, you choose to take a chance with your life. It only takes one try to be hooked forever, one try could also cost you your life.

DJ am inspired many with is talent/music. He was amazing!! It is so sad to see the end of his chapter, but that is the reality- He struggled daily with something that a lot of people have no idea about. He reached a low point in his life and dealt with it the only way he felt he knew how. Don’t be quick to judge- you’ve never walked a day in his shoes. He will continue to inspire and will be remembered. What will you be remembered for? Will you even be remembered?– Rest in Peace Adam. I miss you.

Orlando | 10/13/2009, 5:26 pm EST

his death really suprised me i was just watching his show on mtv and i saw may he rip and i was like wth i felt really bad

Sober for Today | 10/13/2009, 5:44 pm EST

I was heartbroken last night while watching Gone Too Far and heartbroken again after reading some of the ignorant, hateful comments on this sight. I’ve had many friends and family members succumb to addiction – alcohol, drugs, etc. Addiction has nothing to do with willpower – it is a disease. My prayers and sympathy go out to Adam’s family and friends. He has kept me sober another day. Thank you.

Jessie | 10/14/2009, 1:27 pm EST

i think all of you are crazy for saying all that BS like “who cares”
your a sick twisted human beings and need some mental help, i was so upset the day i heard he died he was a great artist and will forever be in our hearts<3

RIP D.J. AM | 10/15/2009, 10:36 am EST

I didn’t know who he was until I saw the MTV show air, but I just want to say to all the losers saying all this mean stuff about him. You WILL get yours! Karma IS a bitch!! I don’t don’t care what anyone says…whether you believe in Santeria or not…I curse YOU!!! All of you who have said negative things about this poor soul. You should be ashamed for what you have said so cowardly behind your computer screens. I got you, and YOU WILL PAY!!! Respect the dead and respect their families!! You will get what you deserve. You made your bed, now you’re gonna lie in it…burning in hell.

PRESH | 10/15/2009, 4:46 pm EST

I never knew him until I watched the program the other night on tv. He helped the girl with her addiction. May he rest in peace. My prayers are with his family. He was truly a hero. It is very unfortunate that he died. But this too should be a lesson to all of us that we need to daily work on those things that caused us to become addicted in the first place. I truly am inspired by his life and the difference he made and i will never forget him nor the lesson in this situation.

brittany | 10/15/2009, 11:21 pm EST

i dont understand why he would kill himself after going through a plane crash he miraculously survived. he should have tried to find his reason for living. its strange to me that he did this mtv show..i hope the ppl on the show dont follow his example and go back to drugs. or i wonder if he overdosed to scare ppl. to show that drug addiction is not to be taken lightly. i dont understand why some ppl let drugs control their lives when they know the result. people who have or had parents that were drug addicts seem to be the worst off.. i believe addictive personalities is part of genetics and those ppl especially should never pick up a drug. RIP Dj AM may God have mercy on your soul. i hope he is no longer suffering from pain, depression, and addiction. another talented person gone to waste by drugs. ppl need to wake up and help ppl who suffer from addictions.

Lil hardtail | 10/17/2009, 3:59 am EST

Rip am

Drug deaths are so horrible and blah blah blah, how about don’t touch the stuff in the first place? You can’t miss what you’ve never had!

shelby | 10/18/2009, 8:52 pm EST

honestly i have never heard his music or anything before. i just got introduced to that tv show on mtv. this is a good show to watch. i had a friend who was addicted to drugs and my family and everyone tried to help him. unfortunetly he ended up getting in trouble while using and lost alot of his friends in the act, my blessings and prayers go out dj am. i wouldnt know how to deal with a death like that. how terrible and sad.. im so sad this happened. i do agree that there is a majior drug problem in some of these big busy cities. so sad…
RIP AM!

NeeCee | 10/18/2009, 10:31 pm EST

Dont be mean
this man has a family that loved him….

nuffsaid | 10/18/2009, 11:27 pm EST

On September 29, 2009, the New York medical examiner determined that Goldstein’s death was an accident caused by “acute intoxication” from a combination of cocaine and prescription drugs. He died from a combination of cocaine, Oxycodone, Vicodin, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole (a drug used to cut cocaine). Who needs all that?

kay | 10/19/2009, 11:09 pm EST

I can’t justed wasted my time watching his program to see that he died? Maybe he should not have taken on a Reality Show on abuse! In fact maybe all Reality shows need to go away.

Kandy Lee | 10/19/2009, 11:14 pm EST

U know it really is a shitty thing to happen to anyone. My daughters dad died at 37 and no matter how or why he died the point is he did and it never matters how well people know who u r or if they even do someone out thee loved him . Please try to remember that he was a son and grandson and sibling not to mention a mentor and friend to all who knew him.R.I.P DJ AM

DJ AM WAS A COOL PERSON. I LOVE THE SHOW GONE TO FAR. IT IS COOL AS HELL THAT HE HELPED OTHERS EVEN THOUGH HE RELAPSED. LIFE ISNT PERFECT. DONT JUDGE !!!

Anonymous | 10/19/2009, 11:19 pm EST

sad to hear

Justine | 10/19/2009, 11:39 pm EST

MTV needs to stop airing, “Gone Too Far”. It’s now the epitome of hypocrisy. The show has lost all credibility, which unfortunately includes DJ AM’s credibility. Worst of all, it portrays addiction as an impossible recovery. It would have been different if DJ AM humbled himself enough to disclose his current struggles on the show, but he portrayed himself as a recovered addict, who has BTDT, and has learned how deadly a continued addiction could have on his life. Get the show off the air.

mandy | 10/20/2009, 12:08 am EST

So sad…death, institutions and jail….He was an angel.. u will be missed!

ME | 10/20/2009, 12:41 am EST

Question? If you don’t give a shit about the guy, why are you so busy making little redundant, mindless, callous remarks? I myself, didn’t follow AM’s career, but I have enough brain cells and compassion to understand the value of a human life…even if the person that passed didn’t completely value their own life enough. We are all human, and even if you get a BIG ASS wake up call, humans tend to not make the right choices all the time, hence your comments. Psychologically speaking, post traumatic stress (i.e.,from a plane crash)could easily lead someone into relapse, or a drug addiction if you’re not careful. Anyhow, I’m just going to assume that the people that are making these immature comments are only 8 years old, and have parents that have not gotten around to teaching them respect. Don’t you kids worry, you’ll grow up and realize that all this shit talking is pretty unnecessary.

Laura | 10/20/2009, 10:29 am EST

Honestly, I didn’t know who is was until I had heard about him on the news about his passing. You don’t have to know who a person is but it really had touched my heart when I found out he was doing the series of “Gone To Far’…. A show about young people who had a drug problem and DJ AM pulled out his heart to help other people get a chance to turn their life around.

I have grown some respect for him and if he were here w/ us I’d tell him thank you so much for helping people!!!! His family and friends will be in my prayers!!! R.I.P =(

keh | 10/22/2009, 11:32 pm EST

everyone has faults… drugs were obviously his… but he did have many chances to get better, and he did for a long time. im sure he was a great guy but, actions have consequences and he preached to people about dieing in his show… he know he could die and did it anyways. i feel bad for the guy and his family but if you make the bed you sleep in it. God bless him, thats all i can say

shamil | 10/23/2009, 2:51 am EST

FUCK ALL THESE FAKE POST’S!!!
He went the way the way he went, so be it, who cares!!! but he did produce art, culture, joy,he left allot behind and as long as music is around someone out there will play some of his work sometime or another, so his influence lives on, in my opinion he had an accomplished life, what more can you ask for!! how many people on this forum do you think will ever produce anything worth transcending time!!!HUH!!!!!!

-we are all infinitely small, our lives, thoughts and opinions are only relevant to the human race and most commonly only relevant to our immediate surroundings. so… not everybody wants the western world’s white picket fence and there are ways to go go, his way definitely isn’t the worst.

AM led his life having taken choices that finally led him to this path. but contrary to other people’s DUMB ASS IRRELEVANT!! opinions, i think that he went out in a bang, ALL deaths are insignificant but what you leave behind is your life’s work, and in that perspective, JOB WELL DONE!!!!
R.I.P DJ AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shamil | 10/23/2009, 3:02 am EST

WHATS ALL THIS TALK BETWEEN RIGHT CHOICES, HUMANITY IS A FLUKRE JOKE!!
DONT MAKE ME LAUGH YOU RIGHT WING PSYCHOTHERAPIST, WHAT’S RIGHT WHAT IS WRONG WHO DECIDES??? THE VATICAN???? LOL……. VIVA FREE SPEACH, AND THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MODERATION, AND UDER DISREGARD FOR YOU OWN LIFES!!!

Dani | 10/24/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Its a terrible thing that happened to Dj A.M. Regaurdless of the reasoning behind his death he is still a person just like you and me. People will bash him by saying he had another chance at life and still chose to go back to drugs. If those people knew anything about drugs and the addictions formed when using them, they would know.. he didnt Choose to go back to them. I think the show Gone To Far is proof of that. By trying to keep people away from that life style Adam was a gaurdian angel to many people. He was their back bone and life support that so many of them needed. But while hes out helping other people, who, and were the people helping him? Please dont sit there and talk about something you know nothing about. If you knew, youd understand that the last choices he made in his life were choices forced on him by a heartless addiction that takes away any sense of right and wrong. The only hope I have is that hes in a place where he can escape all the hardships and pressures he faced in everyday life. I hope hes happy and can finally go on free of the devil that is narcotics. A little piece of me will always be with you, where ever you are Adam.

Forever and Always.

Ryan D | 10/24/2009, 6:58 pm EST

I just don’t get how this man can run a show, telling people off for relapsing and whatnot, then turn around and overdose. Makes you wounder if he was high during the interventions that he held lol.

Regardless, i agree with shamil, -RIP- Man, you died doing what you loved.

Mzz B | 10/26/2009, 11:05 pm EST

Thank you DJ AM

Mzz B | 10/26/2009, 11:07 pm EST

Mzz B,
You know to be honest. I heard about the plane crash incident but I never really knew or have heard of him before. What I will say that anything that is addicting is a problem that from drugs to porn. We all have an addiction to something. Whether it is Drugs , Food, too much TV, Clubbin or Porn! Some may consider your habits to be less addictive than drugs but in reality too much of anything is lethal or bad your your health!

I am not going to curse the ones that curse him because everyone has their day to state their purpose in life in front of God! That’s if you believe in God!

I have heard of this TV show called Gone Too Far. In watching it he made a difference in someones life. So probably after he had escape death maybe once or twice he realized that he must make a difference in this world like all of us should and will one day before it all ends.

With all that being said I can admire a man of his caliber and passion for another persons life. Whether he was an addict or not. That is not for me to say because I know that I am not perfect with all my being. I truly would hate for me to be judged by no one other than my creator!

How many of us with just a little bit of money can make a difference in 1 person life a day or maybe even in a lifetime?

Anyone that can make a difference in someones life can be considered a hero.

Do not make the mistake that hero’s are not perfect either but they have someone that can look up to them and forgive them for their faults and stand and be proud of them because they made someone a better, stronger person than he could ever be.

DJ AM used his story, his drug experience and lifestyle to the world.

Some of us can’t admit to the simple truth about anything!

I want to thank his family for being a support for him in his life. I truly hope that if the truth ever comes out about his death his name will not be forgotten to all those he helped to survive another day!

I am sure that it was not an easy road for him….but I am happy to know in watching his TV show that he is one famous person that made a difference in someones life and for that may God Bless you, and May DJ AM Rest In Peace!

1 Luv,
Mzz B (NYC)

its hard when u lose sum1 to drugs. I just watched the show and he probably couldn’t help himself so he wanted to help others. Which to sum families. Was a blessing. Rip

one day at a time | 10/27/2009, 11:19 pm EST

drug addiction isn’t a joke and often not a choice…I’ve had everything in the world… am a beautiful girl…very popular.. determined…college student at a top university…and decided to try drugs…hard drugs at that trying to live this amazing glamorous life of clubbing..and addiction took over my life. It wasn’t planned or something I wanted…don’t judge addicts if you aren’t one…bc you will never understand…i use to make fun of them too and thought they were wastes of space…now I know I don’t deserve too.

I am so glad that he make a appearance to all of us that live in a world of addiction. He made a good point and he will always be in our hearts. I just wish he could have lived longer to have made a big mark in everyones lifes, but he already is doing that just after his death. People started to notice that you can die, and that there is help. He really helped a lot of people.
R.I.P DJ AM!

poor guy i feel soo bad RIP DJ

Me | 11/7/2009, 2:01 pm EST

First off, Shamil, you don’t know sh!t about me…FAAAAR from right wing…FAAAAR from being some type of conservative psychotherapist. I’ve just been through a lot of shit and I tend to respect all life. People make choices and mistakes.I’m young and free, and love my freedom of speech too.But i can point out that people mightgrow up one day and decide that talking shit about someone who died (no matter what the cause of death might’ve been)just might be kind of screwed up.Funny thing is being that AM was trying to get kids off drugs so apparently he didn’t think drugs was the best thing ever, he himself was just an addict who couldn’t stay away either. He might of gotten a kick out of getting high (because it feels like a relief to addicts), but the after effects was obviously hard to deal with
(he himself has said that). And you definitely can’t tell me sh!t about addiction bc I have a father who has been addicted to every fuck!n thing you can name, he’s been recovering for the past few years, and my boyfriends a chronic alchoholic. I’ve dealth with this sh!t my whole life.

Kaleigh | 11/13/2009, 1:50 pm EST

All of you who sit here and bash him need to fuck off. i hope when you die people sit around and talk shit on you and tell everyone how much of a sorry cock suck you were. It’s a sad thing when anyone dies and he deserves some respect. he was a talented young man who had everything in front of him. Just because he was a drug addict doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a fucking person.and it doesnt mean that he was a bad person either. shit happens to good people. you’ve probably never been addicted to hardcore drugs before so that’s one more thing that you don’t understand about his situation. so maybe the next time you decide to get tough and talk shit on a dead person you’ll think of their situation and all of their friends and family that they left behind who could be reading your words. assholes =/

rest in peace DJ AM, im sad that you wont be around to help people anymore and that youre not here to make awesome music, i wish i could have seen you once before you died.
=[

I watched gone too far 11-12 and didnt even know who dj was but at the end when it said he had died i got online too see how and why… then i see all these bad comments and ppl talking shit. i was a meth addict for 5 years and then got off of it. have been clean for 4 years now and it is hard.. i hurt my arm 3 years ago and got prescribed pain pills.. it is another addiction all over again.. if you have never walked in this mans shoes you should not talk shit about him… RIP DJ. God bless you wherever you may be and your family i know they are hurting

riley | 11/19/2009, 11:30 pm EST

its really sad to see some of theses comments fighting drug addiction is one of the hardest things i ever did if u havent been there u cant judge and may God have mercy on your souls for being so heartless RIP DJ AM

wow | 11/22/2009, 4:17 pm EST

people CHOOSE to take drugs…..do u get it…its a fucking CHOICE.

no one told him to fucking do it. he deserved what he got. if he doesnt value his life, why should we?
its so stupid to feel sympathy for these people? all they do is bitch and moan about how their lives suck………..

a LOT of people have been raped, abused, starved, poor, handicapped, and have overcome all that….his dad yelled at him a few times…big deal…grow some balls…seriously.
